Convergence analysis of unsupervised Legendre-Galerkin neural networks for linear second-order elliptic PDEs

In this paper, we perform the convergence analysis of unsupervised Legendre--Galerkin neural networks (ULGNet), a deep-learning-based numerical method for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). Unlike existing deep learning-based numerical methods for PDEs, the ULGNet expresses the solution as a spectral expansion with respect to the Legendre basis and predicts the coefficients with deep neural networks by solving a variational residual minimization problem. Since the corresponding loss function is equivalent to the residual induced by the linear algebraic system depending on the choice of basis functions, we prove that the minimizer of the discrete loss function converges to the weak solution of the PDEs. Numerical evidence will also be provided to support the theoretical result. Key technical tools include the variant of the universal approximation theorem for bounded neural networks, the analysis of the stiffness and mass matrices, and the uniform law of large numbers in terms of the Rademacher complexity.

Convergence results of a nested decentralized gradient method for non-strongly convex problems

We are concerned with the convergence of NEAR-DGD$^+$ (Nested Exact Alternating Recursion Distributed Gradient Descent) method introduced to solve the distributed optimization problems. Under the assumption of the strong convexity of local objective functions and the Lipschitz continuity of their gradients, the linear convergence is established in \cite{BBKW - Near DGD}. In this paper, we investigate the convergence property of NEAR-DGD$^+$ in the absence of strong convexity. More precisely, we establish the convergence results in the following two cases: (1) When only the convexity is assumed on the objective function. (2) When the objective function is represented as a composite function of a strongly convex function and a rank deficient matrix, which falls into the class of convex and quasi-strongly convex functions. Numerical results are provided to support the convergence results.

BGK model for multi-component gases near a global Maxwellian

In this paper, we establish the existence of the unique global-in-time classical solutions to the multi-component BGK model suggested in \cite{mixmodel} when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. For this, we carefully analyze the dissipative nature of the linearized multi-component relaxation operator, and observe that the partial dissipation from the intra-species and the inter-species linearized relaxation operators are combined in a complementary manner to give rise to the desired dissipation estimate of the model We also observe that the convergence rate of the distribution function increases as the momentum-energy interchange rate between the different components of the gas increases.

The Shakhov model near a global Maxwellian

Shakhov model is a relaxation approximation of the Boltzmann equation proposed to overcome the deficiency of the original BGK model, namely, the incorrect production of the Prandtl number. In this paper, we address the existence and the asymptotic stability of the Shakhov model when the initial data is a small perturbation of global equilibrium. We derive a dichotomy in the coercive estimate of the linearized relaxation operator between zero and non-zero Prandtl number, and observe that the linearized relaxation operator is more degenerate in the former case. To remove such degeneracy and recover the full coercivity, we consider a micro-macro system that involves an additional non-conservative quantity related to the heat flux.

A unified framework for distributed optimization algorithms over time-varying directed graphs

In this paper, we propose a framework under which the decentralized optimization algorithms suggested in \cite{JKJJ,MA, NO,NO2} can be treated in a unified manner. More precisely, we show that the distributed subgradient descent algorithms \cite{JKJJ, NO}, the subgradient-push algorithm \cite{NO2}, and the distributed algorithm with row-stochastic matrix \cite{MA} can be derived by making suitable choices of consensus matrices, step-size and subgradient from the decentralized subgradient descent proposed in \cite{NO}. As a result of such unified understanding, we provide a convergence proof that covers the algorithms in \cite{JKJJ,MA, NO,NO2} under a novel algebraic condition that is strictly weaker than the conventional graph-theoretic condition in \cite{NO}. This unification also enables us to derive a new distributed optimization scheme.

Entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model with the correct Prandtl number

In this paper, we establish the entropy-entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model, a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation introduced for better approximation in the Navier-Stokes limit. Our result improves the previous entropy production estimate [39] in that (1) the full range of Prandtl parameters $-1/2\leqν<1$ including the critical case $ν=-1/2$ is covered, and (2) a sharper entropy production bound is obtained. An explicit characterization of the coefficient of the entropy-entropy production estimate is also presented.

Propagation of uniform upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation

In this paper, we prove the propagation of uniform upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation. These $L^\infty$ bounds have been known to be a challenging open problem in relativistic kinetic theory. To accomplish this, we establish two types of estimates for the gain part of the collision operator: first, we prove a potential type estimate and a relativistic hyper-surface integral estimate. We then combine those estimates using the relativistic counter-part of the Carleman representation to derive uniform control of the gain term for the relativistic collision operator. This allows us to prove the desired propagation of the uniform bounds of the solution. We further present two applications of the propagation of the uniform upper bounds: first we give another proof of the Boltzmann $H$-theorem, and second we prove the asymptotic convergence of solutions to the relativistic Maxwellian equilibrium.

On a relativistic BGK model for polyatomic gases near equilibrium

Recently, a novel relativistic polyatomic BGK model was suggested by Pennisi and Ruggeri [J. of Phys. Conf. Series, 1035, (2018)] to overcome drawbacks of the Anderson-Witting model and Marle model. In this paper, we prove the unique existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to the relativistic polyatomic BGK model when the initial data is sufficiently close to a global equilibrium.

The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation near equilibrium

The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation (or the relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation) describes the dynamics of single-species fast-moving quantum particles. With the recent development of the relativistic quantum mechanics, the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation has been widely used in physics and engineering such as in the quantum collision experiments and the simulations of electrons in graphene. In spite of such importance, there has been no mathematical theory on the existence of solutions for the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation to the best of authors' knowledge. In this paper, we prove the global existence of a unique classical solution to the relativistic Boltzmann equation for both bosons and fermions when the initial distribution is nearby a global equilibrium.

Stationary Flows of the ES-BGK model with the correct Prandtl number

Ellipsoidal BGK model (ES-BGK) is a generalized version of the BGK model where the local Maxwellian in the relaxation operator of the BGK model is extended to an ellipsoidal Gaussian with a Prandtl parameter $ν$, so that the correct transport coefficients can be computed in the Navier-Stokes limit. In this work, we consider the existence and uniqueness of stationary solutions for the ES-BGK model in a slab imposed with the mixed boundary conditions. One of the key difficulties arise in the uniform control of the temperature tensor from below. In the non-critical case $(-1/2<ν<1)$, we utilize the property that the temperature tensor is equivalent to the temperature in this range. In the critical case, $(ν=-1/2)$, where such equivalence relation breaks down, we observe that the size of bulk velocity in $x$ direction can be controlled by the discrepancy of boundary flux, which enables one to bound the temperature tensor from below.

Conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations Part I: Reconstruction

In this paper, we propose and analyse a reconstruction technique which enables one to design high-order conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations. The proposed reconstruction can be obtained by taking the sliding average of a given polynomial reconstruction of the numerical solution. A compact representation of the high order conservative reconstruction in one and two space dimension is provided, and its mathematical properties are analyzed. To demonstrate the performance of proposed technique, we consider implicit semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic-like equations such as the Xin-Jin model and the Broadwell model, and then solve related shock problems which arise in the relaxation limit. Applications to BGK and Vlasov-Poisson equations will be presented in the second part of the paper.

Conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations Part II: Applications

In this paper, we present a new class of conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations. They are based on the conservative reconstruction technique introduced in [S. Y. Cho, et al., Conservative semi-Lagrangian schemes for kinetic equations Part I: Reconstruction, 2020]. The methods are high order accurate both in space and time. Because of the semi-Lagrangian nature, the time step is not restricted by a CFL-type condition. Applications are presented to rigid body rotation, Vlasov Poisson system and the BGK model of rarefied gas dynamics. In the first two cases operator splitting is adopted, to obtain high order accuracy in time, and a conservative reconstruction that preserves the maximum and minimum of the function is used. For initially positive solutions, in particular, this guarantees exact preservation of the L1-norm. Conservative schemes for the BGK model are constructed by coupling the conservative reconstruction with a conservative treatment of the collision term. High order in time is obtained by either Runge-Kutta or BDF time discretization of the equation along characteristics. Because of L-stability and exact conservation, the resulting scheme for the BGK model is asymptotic preserving for the underlying fluid dynamic limit. Several test cases in one and two space dimensions confirm the accuracy and robustness of the methods, and the AP property of the schemes when applied to the BGK model.

BGK model of the multi-species Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation

We propose a BGK model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for gas mixtures. We also provide a sufficient condition that guarantees the existence of equilibrium coefficients so that the model shares the same conservation laws and $H$-theorem with the quantum Boltzmann equation. Unlike the classical BGK for gas mixtures, the equilibrium coefficinets of the local equilibiriums for quantum multi-species gases are defined through highly nonlinear relations that are not explicitly solvable. We verify in a unified way that such nonlinear relations uniquely determine the equilibrium coefficients under the condition, leading to the well-definedness of our model.

Convergence estimates of a semi-Lagrangian scheme for the ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules

In this paper, we propose a new semi-Lagrangian scheme for the polyatomic ellipsoidal BGK model. In order to avoid time step restrictions coming from convection term and small Knudsen number, we combine a semi-Lagrangian approach for the convection term with an implicit treatment for the relaxation term. We show how to explicitly solve the implicit step, thus obtaining an efficient and stable scheme for any Knudsen number. We also derive an explicit error estimate on the convergence of the proposed scheme for every fixed value of the Knudsen number.

Stationary BGK models for chemically reacting gas in a slab

We study the boundary value problem of two stationary BGK-type models - the BGK model for fast chemical reaction and the BGK model for slow chemical reaction - and provide a unified argument to establish the existence and uniqueness of stationary flows of reactive BGK models in a slab. For both models, the main difficulty arises in the uniform control of the reactive parameters from above and below, since, unlike the BGK models for non-reactive gases, the reactive parameters for the reactive BGK models are defined through highly nonlinear relations. To overcome this difficulty, we introduce several nonlinear functionals that capture essential structures of such nonlinear relations such as the monotonicity in specific variables, that enable one to derive necessary estimates for the reactive equilibrium coefficients.

Propagation of $L^p$ estimates for the Spatially Homogeneous Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

In this paper, we prove the propagation of $L^p$ upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for any $1<p<\infty$. We consider the case of relativistic \textit{hard ball} with Grad's angular cutoff. Our proof is based on a detailed study of the interrelationship between the relative momenta, the regularity and the $L^p$ estimates for the gain operator, the development of the relativistic Carleman representation, and several estimates on the relativistic hypersurface $E^{v_*}_{v'-v}$. We also derive a Pythagorean theorem for the \textit{relative momenta} $g(v,v_*),$ $g(v,v')$, and $g(v',v_*)$, which has a crucial role in the reduction of the momentum singularity.

Existence and hydrodynamic limit for a Paveri-Fontana type kinetic traffic model

We study a Paveri-Fontana type model, which describes the evolution of the mesoscopic distribution of vehicles through a combined effect of adjustment of the velocity with respect to nearby vehicles, and slowing down and speeding up of the vehicles arising as a result of exchange of velocity with the vehicles on the same location on the road. We first prove the global-in-time existence of weak solutions. The proof is via energy, $L^p$, and compact support estimates together with velocity averaging lemma. The combined effect of alignment nature of $Q_r$, which keeps the characteristic from spreading, and the dissipative nature of $Q_i$, which gives the uniform control on the size of the distribution function, is crucially used in the estimates. We also rigorously establish a hydrodynamic limit to the presureless Euler equation by employing the relative entropy combined with the Monge-Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance.
