One-dimensional diatomic Vlasov-Poisson system with oscillatory molecular bonds

In this paper, we derive a Vlasov type kinetic model for diatomic plasma in which each ion consists of two atoms bonded through an oscillatory intermolecular force given by a singular Hooke potential. We then consider the existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the proposed model. A careful analysis of the oscillatory behavior of atoms near singular points of the Hooke potential is carried out to extend the local-in-time solution to the global solution.

Strong solutions to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes-BGK system

In this paper, we are concerned with the local-in-time well-posedness of a fluid-kinetic model in which the BGK model with density dependent collision frequency is coupled with the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equation through drag forces. To the best knowledge of authors, this is the first result on the existence of local-in-time smooth solution for particle-fluid model with nonlinear inter-particle operator for which the existence of time can be prolonged as the size of initial data gets smaller.

Stationary quantum BGK model for bosons and fermions in a bounded interval

In this paper, we consider the existence problem for a stationary relaxational models of the quantum Boltzmann equation. More precisely, we establish the existence of mild solution to the fermionic or bosonic quantum BGK model in a slab with inflow boundary data. Unlike the classical case, it is necessary to verify that the quantum local equilibrium state is well-defined, and the transition from the non-condensed state to the condensated state (Bosons), or from the non-saturated state to the saturated state (Fermions) does not arise in our solution space.

High order conservative Semi-Lagrangian scheme for the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation

In this paper, we present a conservative semi-Lagrangian finite-difference scheme for the BGK model. Classical semi-Lagrangian finite difference schemes, coupled with an L-stable treatment of the collision term, allow large time steps, for all the range of Knudsen number. Unfortunately, however, such schemes are not conservative. There are two main sources of lack of conservation. First, when using classical continuous Maxwellian, conservation error is negligible only if velocity space is resolved with sufficiently large number of grid points. However, for a small number of grids in velocity space such error is not negligible, because the parameters of the Maxwellian do not coincide with the discrete moments. Secondly, the non-linear reconstruction used to prevent oscillations destroys the translation invariance which is at the basis of the conservation properties of the scheme. As a consequence the schemes show a wrong shock speed in the limit of small Knudsen number. To treat the first problem and ensure machine precision conservation of mass, momentum and energy with a relatively small number of velocity grid points, we replace the continuous Maxwellian with the discrete Maxwellian introduced by Mieussens. The second problem is treated by implementing a conservative correction procedure based on the flux difference form. In this way we can construct a conservative semi-Lagrangian scheme which is Asymptotic Preserving (AP) for the underlying Euler limit, as the Knudsen number vanishes. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated by extensive numerical tests.

A kinetic description for the herding behavior in financial market

As a continuation of the study of the herding model proposed in (Bae et al. in arXiv:1712.01085, 2017), we consider in this paper the derivation of the kinetic version of the herding model, the existence of the measure-valued solution and the corresponding herding behavior at the kinetic level. We first consider the mean-field limit of the particle herding model and derive the existence of the measure-valued solutions for the kinetic herding model. We then study the herding phenomena of the solutions in two different ways by introducing two different types of herding energy functionals. First, we derive a herding phenomena of the measure-valued solutions under virtually no restrictions on the parameter sets using the Barbalat's lemma. We, however, don't get any herding rate in this case. On the other hand, we also establish a Grönwall type estimate for another herding functional, leading to the exponential herding rate, under comparatively strict conditions. These results are then extended to smooth solutions.

Quantum BGK model near a global Fermi-Dirac distribution

In this paper, we consider the existence and asymptotic behavior of the fermionic quantum BGK model, which is a relaxation model of the quantum Boltzmann equation for fermions. More precisely, we establish the existence of unique classical solutions and their exponentially fast stabilization when the initial data starts sufficiently close to a global Fermi-Dirac distribution. A key difficulty unobserved in the study of the classical BGK model is that we must verify that the equilibrium parameters is uniquely determined through a set of nonlinear equations in each iteration step.

Gain of regularity for the relativistic collision operator

We study a regularity property for the gain part of the relativistic Boltzmann collision operator. Our assumptions on the collisional scattering kernel cover the full range of generic hard and soft potentials with angular cut-off.

Convergence of a semi-Lagrangian scheme for the ellipsoidal BGK model of the Boltzmann equation

The ellipsoidal BGK model is a generalized version of the original BGK model designed to reproduce the physical Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes limit. In this paper, we propose a new implicit semi-Lagrangian scheme for the ellipsoidal BGK model, which, by exploiting special structures of the ellipsoidal Gaussian, can be transformed into a semi-explicit form, guaranteeing the stability of the implicit methods and the efficiency of the explicit methods at the same time. We then derive an error estimate of this scheme in a weighted $L^{\infty}$ norm. Our convergence estimate holds uniformly in the whole range of relaxation parameter $ν$ including $ν=0$, which corresponds to the original BGK model.

Global existence of weak solutions for Navier-Stokes-BGK system

In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of a coupled system of kinetic and fluid equations. More precisely, we establish the global existence of weak solutions for Navier-Stokes-BGK system consisting of the BGK model of Boltzmann equation and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through a drag forcing term. This is achieved by combining weak compactness of the particle interaction operator based on Dunford-Pettis theorem, strong compactness of macroscopic fields of the kinetic part relied on velocity averaging lemma and a high order moment estimate, and strong compactness of the fluid part by Aubin-Lions lemma.

A particle model for the herding phenomena induced by dynamic market signals

In this paper, we study the herding phenomena in financial markets arising from the combined effect of (1) non-coordinated collective interactions between the market players and (2) concurrent reactions of market players to dynamic market signals. By interpreting the expected rate of return of an asset and the favorability on that asset as position and velocity in phase space, we construct an agent-based particle model for herding behavior in finance. We then define two types of herding functionals using this model, and show that they satisfy a Gronwall type estimate and a LaSalle type invariance property respectively, leading to the herding behavior of the market players. Various numerical tests are presented to numerically verify these results.

Ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules near Maxwellians: A dichotomy in the dissipation estimate

We consider the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions to the ellipsoidal BGK model for polyatomic molecules when the initial data starts sufficiently close to a global polyatomic Maxwellian. We observe that the linearized relaxation operator is decomposed into a trully polyatomic part and a essentially monatomic part, leading to a dichotomy in the dissipative property in the sense that the degeneracy of the dissipation shows an abrupt jump as the relaxation parameter $θ$ reaches zero. Accordingly, we employ two different sets of micro-macro system to derive the full coercivity and close the energy estimate.

Entropy production estimates for the polyatomic ellipsoidal BGK model

We study the entropy production estimate for the polyatomic ellipsoidal BGK model, which is a relaxation type kinetic model describing the time evolution of polyatomic particle systems. An interesting dichotomy is observed between $0<θ\leq 1$ and $θ=0$: In each case, a distinct target Maxwellians should be chosen to estimate the entropy production functional from below by the relative entropy. The time asymptotic equilibrium state toward which the distribution function stabilizes bifurcates accordingly.

Stationary solutions for the ellipsoidal BGK model in a slab

We address the boundary value problem for the ellipsoidal BGK model of the Boltzmann equation posed in a bounded interval. The existence of a unique mild solution is established under the assumption that the inflow boundary data does not concentrate too much around the zero velocity, and the gas is sufficiently rarefied.

Entropy production for ellipsoidal BGK model of the Boltzmann equation

The ellipsoidal BGK model (ES-BGK) is a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation designed to yield the correct Prandtl number in the Navier-Stokes limit. In this paper, we make two observations on the entropy production functional of the ES-BGK model. First, we show that the Cercignani type estimate holds for the ES-BGK model in the whole range of parameter $-1/2<ν<1$. Secondly, we observe that the ellipsoidal relaxation operator satisfies an unexpected sign-definite property. Some implications of these observations are also discussed.
