Boundary quantum criticality in models of magnetic impurities coupled to bosonic baths

We investigate quantum impurity problems, where a local magnetic moment is coupled to the spin density of a bosonic environment, leading to bosonic versions of the standard Kondo and Anderson impurity models. In a physical situation, these bosonic environments can correspond either to deconfined spinons in certain classes of Z_2 frustrated antiferromagnets, or to particles in a multicomponent Bose gase (in which case the spin degree of freedom is attributed to hyperfine levels). Using renormalization group techniques, we establish that our impurity models, which feature an exchange interaction analogous to Kondo impurities in Fermi liquids, allow the flow towards a stable strong-coupling state. Since the low-energy bosons live around a single point in momentum space, and there is no Fermi surface, an impurity quantum phase transition occurs at intermediate coupling, separating screened and unscreened phases. This behavior is qualitatively different from previously studied spin-isotropic variants of the spin-boson model, which display stable intermediate-coupling fixed points and no screening.

Universal crossovers and critical dynamics of quantum phase transitions: A renormalization group study of the pseudogap Kondo problem

The pseudogap Kondo problem, describing a magnetic impurity embedded in an electronic environment with a power-law density of states, displays continuous quantum phase transitions between free and screened moment phases. In this paper we employ renormalization group techniques to analytically calculate universal crossover functions, associated to these transitions, for various observables. Quantitative agreement with the results of Numerical Renormalization Group (NRG) simulations is obtained for temperature-dependent static and zero-temperature dynamic quantities, at and away from criticality. In the notoriously difficult realm of finite-temperature low-frequency dynamics, usually inaccessible to both NRG and perturbative methods, we show that progress can be made by a suitable renormalization procedure in the framework of the Callan-Symanzik equations. Our general strategy can be extended to other zero-temperature phase transitions, both in quantum impurity models and bulk systems.

The Kondo effect in bosonic spin liquids

In a metal, a magnetic impurity is fully screened by the conduction electrons at low temperature. In contrast, impurity moments coupled to spin-1 bulk bosons, such as triplet excitations in paramagnets, are only partially screened, even at the bulk quantum critical point. We argue that this difference is not due to the quantum statistics of the host particles but instead related to the structure of the impurity-host coupling, by demonstrating that frustrated magnets with bosonic spinon excitations can display a bosonic version of the Kondo effect. However, the Bose statistics of the bulk implies distinct behavior, such as a weak-coupling impurity quantum phase transition, and perfect screening for a range of impurity spin values. We discuss implications of our results for the compound Cs2CuCl4, as well as possible extensions to multicomponent bosonic gases.

Critical points and non-Fermi liquids in the underscreened pseudogap Kondo model

Numerical Renormalization Group simulations have shown that the underscreened spin-1 Kondo impurity model with power-law bath density of states (DOS) $ρ(\w) \propto |\w|^r$ possesses various intermediate-coupling fixed points, including a stable non-Fermi liquid phase. In this paper we discuss the corresponding universal low-energy theories, obtain thermodynamic quantities and critical exponents by renormalization group analysis together with suitable $ε$-expansions, and compare our results with numerical data. Whereas the particle-hole symmetric critical point can be controlled at weak coupling using a simple generalization of the spin-1/2 model, we show that the stable non-Fermi liquid fixed point must be accessed near strong coupling via a mapping onto an effective ferromagnetic $S_\mr{eff}=1/2$ model with singular bath DOS with exponent $r_\mr{eff}=-r<0$. In addition, we consider the particle-hole asymmetric critical fixed point, for which we propose a universal field theory involving the crossing between doublet and triplet levels.

Impact of disorder on unconventional superconductors with competing ground states

Non-magnetic impurities are known as strong pair breakers in superconductors with pure d-wave pairing symmetry. Here we discuss d-wave states under the combined influence of impurities and competing instabilities, such as pairing in a secondary channel as well as lattice symmetry breaking. Using the self-consistent T-matrix formalism, we show that disorder can strongly modify the competition between different pairing states. For a d-wave superconductor in the presence of a subdominant local attraction, Anderson's theorem implies that disorder always generates an s-wave component in the gap at sufficiently low temperature, even if a pure d_{x^2-y^2} order parameter characterizes the clean system. In contrast, disorder is always detrimental to an additional d_{xy} component. This qualitative difference suggests that disorder can be used to discriminate among different mixed-gap structures in high-temperature superconductors. We also investigate superconducting phases with lattice symmetry breaking in the form of bond order, and show that the addition of impurities quickly leads to the restoration of translation invariance. Our results highlight the importance of controlling disorder for the observation of competing order parameters in cuprates.

Singular dynamics and pseudogap formation in the underscreened Kondo impurity and Kondo lattice models

We study a generalization of the Kondo model in which the impurity spin is represented by Abrikosov fermions in a rotation group SU(P) larger than the SU(N) group associated to the spin of the conduction electrons, thereby forcing the single electronic bath to underscreen the localized moment. We demonstrate how to formulate a controlled large N limit preserving the property of underscreening, and which can be seen as a ``dual'' theory of the multichannel large N equations usually associated to overscreening. Due to the anomalous scattering on the uncompensated degrees of freedom, the Fermi liquid description of the electronic fluid is invalidated, with the logarithmic singularities known to occur in the S=1 SU(2) Kondo impurity model being replaced by continuous power laws at N=\infty. The present technique can be extended to tackle the related underscreened Kondo lattice model in the large N limit. We discover the occurence of an insulating pseudogap regime in place of the expected renormalized metallic phase of the fully screened case, preventing the establishement of coherence over the lattice. This work and the recent observation of a similar weakly insulating behavior on transport in CeCuAs_2 should give momentum for further studies of underscreened impurity models on the lattice.

Slave-rotor mean field theories of strongly correlated systems and the Mott transition in finite dimensions

The multiorbital Hubbard model is expressed in terms of quantum phase variables (``slave rotors'') conjugate to the local charge, and of auxiliary fermions, providing an economical representation of the Hilbert space of strongly correlated systems. When the phase variables are treated in a local mean-field manner, similar results to the dynamical mean-field theory are obtained, namely a Brinkman-Rice transition at commensurate fillings together with a ``preformed'' Mott gap in the single-particle density of states. The slave- rotor formalism allows to go beyond the local description and take into account spatial correlations, following an analogy to the superfluid-insulator transition of bosonic systems. We find that the divergence of the effective mass at the metal- insulator transition is suppressed by short range magnetic correlations in finite-dimensional systems. Furthermore, the strict separation of energy scales between the Fermi- liquid coherence scale and the Mott gap found in the local picture, holds only approximately in finite dimensions, due to the existence of low-energy collective modes related to zero-sound.

Exact scaling functions of the multichannel Kondo model

We reinvestigate the large degeneracy solution of the multichannel Kondo problem, and show how in the universal regime the complicated integral equations simplifying the problem can be mapped onto a first order differential equation. This leads to an explicit expression for the full zero-temperature scaling functions at - and away from - the intermediate non Fermi Liquid fixed point, providing complete analytic information on the universal low - and intermediate - energy properties of the model. These results also apply to the widely-used Non Crossing Approximation of the Anderson model, taken in the Kondo regime. An extension of this formalism for studying finite temperature effects is also proposed and offers a simple approach to solve models of strongly correlated electrons with relevance to the physics of heavy fermion compounds.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior from two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations: a renormalization-group and large-N analysis

We analyze the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, in the marginal case of two dimensions (d=2,z=2). Up to next-to-leading order in the number of components (N) of the field, we find that logarithmic corrections do not lead to an enhancement of the Landau damping. This is in agreement with a renormalization-group analysis, for arbitrary N. Hence, the logarithmic effects are unable to account for the behavior reportedly observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments on CeCu_{6-x}Au_x. We also examine the extended dynamical mean-field treatment (local approximation) of this theory, and find that only subdominant corrections to the Landau damping are obtained within this approximation, in contrast to recent claims.

Quantum impurity solvers using a slave rotor representation

We introduce a representation of electron operators as a product of a spin-carry ing fermion and of a phase variable dual to the total charge (slave quantum rotor). Based on this representation, a new method is proposed for solving multi-orbital Anderson quantum impurity models at finite interaction strength U. It consists in a set of coupled integral equations for the auxiliary field Green's functions, which can be derived from a controlled saddle-point in the limit of a large number of field components. In contrast to some finite-U extensions of the non-crossing approximation, the new method provides a smooth interpolation between the atomic limit and the weak-coupling limit, and does not display violation of causality at low-frequency. We demonstrate that this impurity solver can be applied in the context of Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, at or close to half-filling. Good agreement with established results on the Mott transition is found, and large values of the orbital degeneracy can be investigated at low computational cost.

Dynamical Mean-Field Theory of Resonating Valence Bond Antiferromagnets

We propose a theory of the spin dynamics of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, which is based on an effective action for a plaquette embedded in a self-consistent bath. This approach, supplemented by a low-energy projection, is applied to the kagome antiferromagnet. We find that a spin-liquid regime extends to very low energy, in which local correlation functions have a slow decay in time, well described by a power law behaviour and $ω/T$ scaling of the response function: $χ''(ω)\propto ω^{-α}F(ω/T)$.
