Heating of a semi-infinite Hooke chain

We investigate unsteady ballistic heat transport in a semi-infinite Hooke chain with a free end subjected to an arbitrary heat source. We derive an exact integral representation for the kinetic temperature, together with a weak-dissipation lattice approximation and two continuum-type descriptions. The continualization of the discrete solution for the kinetic temperature in the weakly dissipative limit is obtained in two representations. The first is a symmetrical continuum solution based on an even extension of the source with respect to the boundary. The second is a discrete-continuum solution derived by applying a large-time asymptotic approximation to the fundamental solution at the fronts of the incident and reflected thermal waves in an instantaneously perturbed conservative semi-infinite chain. This solution retains a contribution from the interaction of the incident and reflected waves, which is absent in the symmetrical continuum solution. Analysis of sudden point heat supply indicates that, even in the non-dissipative chain, the discrete solution for the kinetic temperature exhibits pronounced large-time slowing near the free end, consistent with a local nonequilibrium plateau, whereas the symmetrical continuum representation predicts unbounded logarithmic growth. The results are expected to provide a benchmark for continuum models of heat transport in lattices with a free boundary.

Energy supply into a semi-infinite $β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain by periodic force loading

We deal with dynamics of the~$β$-Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou chain with one free end, subjected to the sinusoidal periodic force. We examine evolution of the total energy, supplied at large times. In the harmonic case~($β=0$), the energy grows in time linearly at non-zero group velocities, corresponding to the excitation frequency and grows in time as~$\sqrt{t}$ at zero group velocity. Explanation of behavior in time of the energy is proposed by analysis of obtained approximate closed-form expression for the field of particle velocities. In the weak anharmonic case, large-time asymptotic approximation for the total energy is obtained by using the renormalized dispersion relation. Operating of the approximation, we analyze energy transfer at the driving frequencies, lying both in the pass-band and in the stop-band of the harmonic chain. Consistency of the asymptotic assesses with the results of numerical simulations is discussed.

Unsteady thermal transport in an instantly heated semi-infinite free end Hooke chain

We consider unsteady ballistic heat transport in a semi-infinite Hooke chain with free end and arbitrary initial temperature profile. An analytical description of the evolution of the kinetic temperature is proposed in both discrete (exact) and continuum (approximate) formulations. By comparison of the discrete and continuum descriptions of kinetic temperature field, we reveal some restrictions to the latter. Specifically, the far-field kinetic temperature is well described by the continuum solution, which, however, deviates near and at the free end (boundary). We show analytically that, after thermal wave reflects from the boundary, the discrete solution for the kinetic temperature undergoes a jump near the free end. A comparison of the descriptions of heat propagation in the semi-infinite and infinite Hooke chains is presented. Results of the current paper are expected to provide insight into non-stationary heat transport in the semi-infinite lattices.
