Symmetries of supergravity backgrounds and supersymmetric field theory

In four spacetime dimensions, all ${\cal N} =1$ supergravity-matter systems can be formulated in the so-called $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace proposed by Howe in 1981. This paper is devoted to the study of those geometric structures which characterise a background $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace and are important in the context of supersymmetric field theory in curved space. We introduce (conformal) Killing tensor superfields $\ell_{(α_1 \dots α_m) ({\dot α}_1 \dots {\dot α}_n)}$, with $m$ and $n$ non-negative integers, $m+n>0$, and elaborate on their significance in the following cases: (i) $m=n=1$; (ii) $m-1=n=0$; and (iii) $m=n>1$. The (conformal) Killing vector superfields $\ell_{α\dot α}$ generate the (conformal) isometries of curved superspace, which are symmetries of every (conformal) supersymmetric field theory. The (conformal) Killing spinor superfields $\ell_{α}$ generate extended (conformal) supersymmetry transformations. The (conformal) Killing tensor superfields with $m=n>1$ prove to generate all higher symmetries of the (massless) massive Wess-Zumino operator.

Spin projection operators in (A)dS and partial masslessness

We elaborate on the traceless and transverse spin projectors in four-dimensional de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces. The poles of these projectors are shown to correspond to partially massless fields. We also obtain a factorisation of the conformal operators associated with gauge fields of arbitrary Lorentz type $(m/2,n/2 )$, with $m$ and $n$ positive integers.

Comments on Anomalies in Supersymmetric Theories

We analyse the relation between anomalies in their manifestly supersymmetric formulation in superspace and their formulation in Wess-Zumino (WZ) gauges. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of the cohomology problem in the two formulations and that they are related by a particular choice of a superspace counterterm ("scheme"). Any apparent violation of $Q$-supersymmetry is due to an explicit violation by the counterterm which defines the scheme equivalent to the WZ gauge. It is therefore removable.

Manifestly duality-invariant interactions in diverse dimensions

As an extension of the Ivanov-Zupnik approach to self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics in four dimensions [1,2], we reformulate U(1) duality-invariant nonlinear models for a gauge $(2p-1)$-form in $d=4p$ dimensions as field theories with manifestly U(1) invariant self-interactions. This reformulation is suitable to generate arbitrary duality-invariant nonlinear systems including those with higher derivatives.

Field theories with (2,0) AdS supersymmetry in ${\cal N}=1$ AdS superspace

In three dimensions, it is known that field theories possessing extended $(p,q)$ anti-de Sitter (AdS) supersymmetry with ${\cal N}=p+q \geq 3$ can be realised in (2,0) AdS superspace. Here we present a formalism to reduce every field theory with (2,0) AdS supersymmetry to ${\cal N}=1$ AdS superspace. As nontrivial examples, we consider supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models formulated in terms of ${\cal N}=2$ chiral and linear supermultiplets. The $(2,0) \to (1,0)$ AdS reduction technique is then applied to the off-shell massless higher-spin supermultiplets in (2,0) AdS superspace constructed in [1]. As a result, for each superspin value $\hat s$, integer $(\hat s= s)$ or half-integer $(\hat s= s+1/2)$, with $s=1,2,\dots $, we obtain two off-shell formulations for a massless ${\cal N}=1$ superspin-$\hat s$ multiplet in AdS${}_3$. These models prove to be related to each other by a superfield Legendre transformation in the flat superspace limit, but the duality is not lifted to the AdS case. Two out of the four series of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric higher-spin models thus derived are new. The constructed massless ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric higher-spin actions in AdS${}_3$ are used to formulate (i) higher-spin supercurrent multiplets in ${\cal N}=1$ AdS superspace; and (ii) new topologically massive higher-spin off-shell supermultiplets. Examples of ${\cal N}=1$ higher-spin supercurrents are given for models of a complex scalar supermultiplet. We also present two new off-shell formulations for a massive ${\cal N}=1$ gravitino supermultiplet in AdS${}_3$.

Linearised actions for $\cal N$-extended (higher-spin) superconformal gravity

The off-shell actions for $\cal N$-extended conformal supergravity theories in three dimensions were formulated in [1,2] for $1\leq {\cal N} \leq 6$ using a universal approach. Each action is generated by a closed super three-form which is constructed in terms of the constrained geometry of $\cal N$-extended conformal superspace. In this paper we initiate a program to recast these actions (and to formulate their higher-spin counterparts) in terms of unconstrained gauge prepotentials as integrals over the full superspace. We derive transverse projection operators in $\cal N$-extended Minkowski superspace and then use them to construct linearised rank-$n$ super-Cotton tensors and off-shell $\cal N$-extended superconformal actions. We also propose off-shell gauge-invariant actions to describe massive higher-spin supermultiplets in $\cal N$-extended supersymmetry. Our analysis leads to general expressions for identically conserved higher-spin current multiplets in $\cal N$-extended supersymmetry.

Conformal geometry and (super)conformal higher-spin gauge theories

We develop a manifestly conformal approach to describe linearised (super)conformal higher-spin gauge theories in arbitrary conformally flat backgrounds in three and four spacetime dimensions. Closed-form expressions in terms of gauge prepotentials are given for gauge-invariant higher-spin (super) Cotton and (super) Weyl tensors in three and four dimensions, respectively. The higher-spin (super) Weyl tensors are shown to be conformal primary (super)fields in arbitrary conformal (super)gravity backgrounds, however they are gauge invariant only if the background (super) Weyl tensor vanishes. The proposed higher-spin actions are (super) Weyl-invariant on arbitrary curved backgrounds, however the appropriate higher-spin gauge invariance holds only in the conformally flat case. We also describe conformal models for generalised gauge fields that are used to describe partially massless dynamics in three and four dimensions. In particular, generalised higher-spin Cotton and Weyl tensors are introduced.

Higher spin supermultiplets in three dimensions: (2,0) AdS supersymmetry

Within the framework of (2,0) anti-de Sitter (AdS) supersymmetry in three dimensions, we propose a multiplet of higher-spin currents. Making use of this supercurrent, we construct two off-shell gauge formulations for a massless multiplet of half-integer superspin $(s+\frac 12)$, for every integer $s>0$. In the $s=1$ case, one formulation describes the linearised action for (2,0) anti-de Sitter supergravity, while the other gives the type III minimal supergravity action in (2,0) AdS superspace, with both linearised supergravity actions originally derived in arXiv:1109.0496. The constructed massless actions are then used to formulate topologically massive higher-spin supermultiplets in (2,0) AdS superspace. Our results admit a natural extension to the case of $S^3$.

Topologically massive higher spin gauge theories

We elaborate on conformal higher-spin gauge theory in three-dimensional (3D) curved space. For any integer $n>2$ we introduce a conformal spin-$\frac{n}{2}$ gauge field $h_{(n)} =h_{α_1\dots α_n}$ (with $n$ spinor indices) of dimension $(2-n/2)$ and argue that it possesses a Weyl primary descendant $C_{(n)}$ of dimension $(1+n/2)$. The latter proves to be divergenceless and gauge invariant in any conformally flat space. Primary fields $C_{(3)}$ and $C_{(4)}$ coincide with the linearised Cottino and Cotton tensors, respectively. Associated with $C_{(n)}$ is a Chern-Simons-type action that is both Weyl and gauge invariant in any conformally flat space. These actions, which for $n=3$ and $n=4$ coincide with the linearised actions for conformal gravitino and conformal gravity, respectively, are used to construct gauge-invariant models for massive higher-spin fields in Minkowski and anti-de Sitter space. In the former case, the higher-derivative equations of motion are shown to be equivalent to those first-order equations which describe the irreducible unitary massive spin-$\frac{n}{2}$ representations of the 3D Poincaré group. Finally, we develop ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric extensions of the above results.

Higher spin supercurrents in anti-de Sitter space

We propose higher spin supercurrent multiplets for ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric field theories in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS). Their explicit realisations are derived for various supersymmetric theories, including a model of $N$ massive chiral scalar superfields with an arbitrary mass matrix. We also present new off-shell gauge formulations for the massless ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric multiplet of integer superspin $s$ in AdS, where $s =2,3,\dots$, as well as for the massless gravitino multiplet (superspin $s=1$) which requires special consideration.

${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric higher spin gauge theories and current multiplets in three dimensions

We describe several families of primary linear supermultiplets coupled to three-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ conformal supergravity and use them to construct topological $BF$-type terms. We introduce conformal higher-spin gauge superfields and associate with them Chern-Simons-type actions that are constructed as an extension of the linearised action for ${\cal N}=2$ conformal supergravity. These actions possess gauge and super-Weyl invariance in any conformally flat superspace and involve a higher-spin generalisation of the linearised ${\cal N}=2$ super-Cotton tensor. For massless higher-spin supermultiplets in (1,1) anti-de Sitter (AdS) superspace, we propose two off-shell Lagrangian gauge formulations, which are related to each other by a dually transformation. Making use of these massless theories allows us to formulate consistent higher-spin supercurrent multiplets in (1,1) AdS superspace. Explicit examples of such supercurrent multiplets are provided for models of massive chiral supermultiplets. Off-shell formulations for massive higher-spin supermultiplets in (1,1) AdS superspace are proposed.

Taking a vector supermultiplet apart: Alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos-type terms

Starting from an Abelian ${\cal N}=1$ vector supermultiplet $V$ coupled to conformal supergravity, we construct from it a nilpotent real scalar Goldstino superfield $\mathfrak V$ of the type proposed in arXiv:1702.02423. It contains only two independent component fields, the Goldstino and the auxiliary $D$-field. The important properties of this Goldstino superfield are: (i) it is gauge invariant; and (ii) it is super-Weyl invariant. As a result, the gauge prepotential can be represented as $V={\cal V} +\mathfrak V$, where $\cal V$ contains only one independent component field, modulo gauge degrees of freedom, which is the gauge one-form. Making use of $\mathfrak V$ allows us to introduce new Fayet-Iliopoulos-type terms, which differ from the one proposed in arXiv:1712.08601 and share with the latter the property that gauged $R$-symmetry is not required.

Non-conformal higher spin supercurrents

In four spacetime dimensions there exist two off-shell formulations for the massless multiplet of superspin $(s+\frac 12)$, where $s=2,3, \dots$. These supersymmetric higher spin gauge theories, known as longitudinal and transverse, are dual to each other and describe two massless fields of spin $(s+\frac 12)$ and $(s+1)$ upon elimination of the auxiliary fields. They respectively reduce, in the limiting case of $s=1$, to the linearised actions for the old minimal and the $n=-1$ non-minimal ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity theories. Associated with these gauge massless theories are non-conformal higher spin supercurrent multiplets which we describe. We demonstrate that the longitudinal higher spin supercurrents are realised in the model for a massive chiral scalar superfield only if $s$ is odd, $s=2n+1$, with $n= 1,2, \dots$.

The massless integer superspin multiplets revisited

We propose a new off-shell formulation for the massless ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric multiplet of integer superspin $s$ in four dimensions, where $s =2,3,\dots$ (the $s=1$ case corresponds to the gravitino multiplet). Its gauge freedom matches that of the superconformal superspin-$s$ multiplet described in arXiv:1701.00682. The gauge-invariant action involves two compensating multiplets in addition to the superconformal superspin-$s$ multiplet. Upon imposing a partial gauge fixing, this action reduces to the one describing the so-called longitudinal formulation for the massless superspin-$s$ multiplet. Our new model is shown to possess a dual realisation obtained by applying a superfield Legendre transformation. We present a non-conformal higher spin supercurrent multiplet associated with the new integer superspin theory. This fermionic supercurrent is shown to occur in the Fayet-Sohnius model for a massive ${\cal N}=2$ hypermultiplet. We also give a new off-shell realisation for the massless gravitino multiplet.

Nilpotent ${\cal N}=1$ tensor multiplet

We propose a nilpotent ${\cal N}=1$ tensor multiplet describing two fields, which are the Goldstino and the axion, the latter being realised in terms of the field strength of a gauge two-form. This supersymmetric multiplet is formulated in terms of a deformed real linear superfield, subject to a cubic nilpotency condition. Its couplings to a super Yang-Mills multiplet and supergravity are presented. To define a nilpotent tensor multiplet in the locally supersymmetric case, one has to make use of either real or complex three-form supergravity theories, which are variant realisations of the old minimal formulation for ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity.

New nilpotent ${\cal N}= 2$ superfields

We propose new off-shell models for spontaneously broken local ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry, in which the supergravity multiplet couples to nilpotent Goldstino superfields that contain either a gauge one-form or a gauge two-form in addition to spin-1/2 Goldstone fermions and auxiliary fields. In the case of ${\cal N}=2$ Poincaré supersymmetry, we elaborate on the concept of twisted chiral superfields and present a nilpotent ${\cal N}=2$ superfield that underlies the cubic nilpotency conditions given in arXiv:1707.03414 in terms of constrained ${\cal N}=1$ superfields.
