Goldstino superfields in supergravity

We review two off-shell models for spontaneously broken ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity proposed in arXiv:1702.02423 and arXiv:1707.07390. The ${\cal N}=1$ model makes use of a real scalar superfield subject to three nilpotency conditions. The ${\cal N}=2$ theory is formulated in terms of a reduced chiral superfield obeying a cubic nilpotency condition. New results on nilpotent ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity are also included.

Conformal supergravities as Chern-Simons theories revisited

We propose a superfield method to construct off-shell actions for N-extended conformal supergravity theories in three space-time dimensions. It makes use of the superform technique to engineer supersymmetric invariants. The method is specifically applied to the case of N=1 conformal supergravity and provides a new realization for the actions of conformal and topologically massive supergravities.

Higher spin super-Cotton tensors and generalisations of the linear-chiral duality in three dimensions

In three spacetime dimensions, (super)conformal geometry is controlled by the (super) Cotton tensor. We present a new duality transformation for N-extended supersymmetric theories formulated in terms of the linearised super-Cotton tensor or its higher spin extensions for the cases N=2, 1, 0. In the N=2 case, this transformation is a generalisation of the linear-chiral duality, which is known to provide a dual description in terms of chiral superfields for general models of self-interacting N=2 vector multiplets in three dimensions and N=1 tensor multiplets in four dimensions. For superspin-1 (gravitino multiplet), superspin-3/2 (supergravity multiplet) and higher superspins s>3/2, the duality transformation relates a higher-derivative theory to one containing at most two derivatives at the component level. In the N=1 case, we introduce gauge prepotentials for higher spin superconformal gravity and construct the corresponding super-Cotton tensors, as well as the higher spin extensions of the linearised N=1 conformal supergravity action. Our N=1 duality transformation is a higher spin extension of the known superfield duality relating the massless N=1 vector and scalar multiplets. In the non-supersymmetric (N=0) case, the gauge prepotentials for higher spin conformal geometry (both bosonic and fermionic) and the corresponding Cotton tensors can be obtained from their N=1 counterparts by carrying out N=1 --> N=0 reduction. In the bosonic sector, this reduction is shown to lead to the Cotton tensors for higher spins constructed by Pope and Townsend, and by Damour and Deser in the spin-3 case. Our N=0 duality transformation is a higher spin extension of the vector-scalar duality.

Off-shell superconformal higher spin multiplets in four dimensions

We formulate off-shell N=1 superconformal higher spin multiplets in four spacetime dimensions and briefly discuss their coupling to conformal supergravity. As an example, we explicitly work out the coupling of the superconformal gravitino multiplet to conformal supergravity. The corresponding action is super-Weyl invariant for arbitrary supergravity backgrounds. However, it is gauge invariant only if the supersymmetric Bach tensor vanishes. This is similar to linearised conformal supergravity in curved background.

Two-form supergravity, superstring couplings, and Goldstino superfields in three dimensions

We develop off-shell formulations for ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ anti-de Sitter supergravity theories in three spacetime dimensions that contain gauge two-forms in the auxiliary field sector. These formulations are shown to allow consistent couplings of supergravity to the Green-Schwarz superstring with ${\cal N}=1$ or ${\cal N}=2$ spacetime supersymmetry. In addition to being $κ$-symmetric, the Green-Schwarz superstring actions constructed are also invariant under super-Weyl transformations of the target space. We also present a detailed study of models for spontaneously broken local supersymmetry in three dimensions obtained by coupling the known off-shell ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity theories to nilpotent Goldstino superfields.

Complex three-form supergravity and membranes

There exist two variants of the old minimal formulation for ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in four dimensions, in which one or each of the two auxiliary scalars is replaced by the field strength of a gauge three-form. These theories are known as three-form supergravity and complex three-form supergravity, respectively. For each of them, we present a super-Weyl invariant coupling of supergravity to the supermembrane and prove kappa-invariance of the resulting action. In the case of three-form supergravity, we demonstrate that the action constructed reduces to that given by Ovrut and Waldram twenty years ago upon imposing a super-Weyl gauge in which the compensating three-form superfield is set to a constant.

Non-conformal supercurrents in six dimensions

Non-conformal supercurrents in six dimensions are described, which contain the trace of the energy-momentum tensor and the gamma-trace of the supersymmetry current amongst their component fields. Within the superconformal approach to ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ supergravity, we present various distinct non-conformal supercurrents, one of which is associated with an ${\cal O}(2)$ (or linear) multiplet compensator, while another with a tensor multiplet compensator. We also derive an infinite class of non-conformal supercurrents involving ${\cal O}(n)$ multiplets with $n > 2$. As an illustrative example we construct the relaxed hypermultiplet in supergravity. Finally, we put forward a non-conformal supercurrent in the ${\cal N} = (2, 0)$ supersymmetric case.

Three-form multiplet and supersymmetry breaking

Recently, a nilpotent real scalar superfield $V$ was introduced in arXiv:1702.02423 as a model for the Goldstino. It contains only two independent component fields, the Goldstino and the auxiliary $D$-field. Here we first show that $V$ can equivalently be realised as a constrained three-form superfield. We demonstrate that every irreducible Goldstino superfield (of which the Goldstino is the only independent component field) can be realised as a descendant of $V$ which is invariant under local rescalings $V \to {\rm e}^τV$, where $τ$ is an arbitrary real scalar superfield. We next propose a new Goldstino supermultiplet which is described by a nilpotent three-form superfield $\cal Y$ that is a variant formulation for the nilpotent chiral superfield, which is often used in off-shell models for spontaneously broken supergravity. It is shown that the action describing the dynamics of $\cal Y$ may be obtained from a supersymmetric nonlinear $σ$-model in the infrared limit. Unlike $V$, the Goldstino superfield $\cal Y$ contains two independent auxiliary fields, $F= H+{\rm i} G$, of which $H$ is a scalar and $G$ is the field strength of a gauge three-form. When $\cal Y$ is coupled to supergravity, both $H$ and $G$ produce positive contributions to the cosmological constant. While the contribution from $H$ is uniquely determined by the parameter of the supersymmetry breaking in the action, the contribution from $G$ is dynamical.

Chiral anomalies in six dimensions from harmonic superspace

We develop a superfield approach to compute chiral anomalies in general ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theories in six dimensions. Within the harmonic-superspace formulation for these gauge theories, the anomalous contributions to the effective action only come from matter and ghost hypermultiplets. By studying the short-distance behaviour of the propagator for the hypermultiplet coupled to a background vector multiplet, we compute the covariant and consistent chiral anomalies. We also provide a superform formulation for the non-abelian anomalous current multiplet in general ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ supersymmetric gauge theories.

New superconformal multiplets and higher derivative invariants in six dimensions

Within the framework of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ conformal supergravity, we introduce new off-shell multiplets ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$, where $n=3,4,\dots,$ and use them to construct higher-rank extensions of the linear multiplet action. The ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplets may be viewed as being dual to well-known superconformal ${\cal O}(n)$ multiplets. We provide prepotential formulations for the ${\cal O}(n)$ and ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplets coupled to conformal supergravity. For every ${\cal O}{}^{*}(n)$ multiplet, we construct a higher derivative invariant which is superconformal on arbitrary superconformally flat backgrounds. We also show how our results can be used to construct new higher derivative actions in supergravity.

Goldstino superfields in N=2 supergravity

We present off-shell N=2 supergravity actions, which exhibit spontaneously broken local supersymmetry and allow for de Sitter vacua for certain values of the parameters. They are obtained by coupling the standard N=2 supergravity-matter systems to the Goldstino superfields introduced in arXiv:1105.3001 and arXiv:1607.01277 in the rigid supersymmetric case. These N=2 Goldstino superfields include nilpotent chiral and linear supermultiplets. We also describe a new reducible N=1 Goldstino supermultiplet.

Minimal $\cal N=4$ topologically massive supergravity

Using the superconformal framework, we construct a new off-shell model for $\cal N=4$ topologically massive supergravity which is minimal in the sense that it makes use of a single compensating vector multiplet and involves no free parameter. As such, it provides a counterexample to the common lore that two compensating multiplets are required within the conformal approach to supergravity with eight supercharges in diverse dimensions. This theory is an off-shell $\cal N=4$ supersymmetric extension of chiral gravity. All of its solutions correspond to non-conformally flat superspaces. Its maximally supersymmetric solutions include the so-called critical (4,0) anti-de Sitter superspace introduced in arXiv:1205.4622, and well as warped critical (4,0) anti-de Sitter superspaces. We also propose a dual formulation for the theory in which the vector multiplet is replaced with an off-shell hypermultiplet. Upon elimination of the auxiliary fields belonging to the hypermultiplet and imposing certain gauge conditions, the dual action reduces to the one introduced in arXiv:1605.00103.

Invariants for minimal conformal supergravity in six dimensions

We develop a new off-shell formulation for six-dimensional conformal supergravity obtained by gauging the 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ superconformal algebra in superspace. This formulation is employed to construct two invariants for 6D ${\cal N} = (1, 0)$ conformal supergravity, which contain $C^3$ and $C\Box C$ terms at the component level. Using a conformal supercurrent analysis, we prove that these exhaust all such invariants in minimal conformal supergravity. Finally, we show how to construct the supersymmetric $F \Box F$ invariant in curved superspace.

Off-shell massive N=1 supermultiplets in three dimensions

This paper is mainly concerned with the construction of new off-shell higher spin N=1 supermultiplets in three spacetime dimensions. We elaborate on the gauge prepotentials and linearised super-Cotton tensors for higher spin N=1 superconformal geometry and propose compensating superfields required to formulate off-shell massless higher spin supermultiplets. The corresponding gauge-invariant actions are worked out explicitly using an auxiliary oscillator realisation. We construct, for the first time, off-shell massive higher spin supermultiplets. The gauge-invariant actions for these supermultiplets are obtained by adding Chern-Simons like mass terms (that is, higher spin extensions of the linearised action for N=1 conformal supergravity) to the actions for the massless supermultiplets. For each of the massive gravitino and supergravity multiplets, we propose two dually equivalent formulations.

The Goldstino Brane, the Constrained Superfields and Matter in N=1 Supergravity

We show that different (brane and constrained superfield) descriptions for the Volkov-Akulov goldstino coupled to N=1, D=4 supergravity with matter produce similar wide classes of models with spontaneously broken local supersymmetry and discuss the relation between the different formulations. As with the formulations with irreducible constrained superfields, the geometric goldstino brane approach has the advantage of being manifestly off-shell supersymmetric without the need to introduce auxiliary fields. It provides an explicit solution of the nilpotent superfield constraints and avoids issues with non-Gaussian integration of auxiliary fields. We describe general couplings of the supersymmetry breaking sector, including the goldstino and other non-supersymmetric matter, to supergravity and matter supermultiplets. Among various examples, we discuss a goldstino brane contribution to the gravitino mass term and the supersymmetrization of the anti-D3-brane contribution to the effective theory of type IIB warped flux compactifications.

Off-shell higher spin N=2 supermultiplets in three dimensions

Off-shell higher spin N=2 supermultiplets in three spacetime dimensions (3D) are presented in this paper. We propose gauge prepotentials for higher spin superconformal gravity and construct the corresponding gauge-invariant field strengths, which are proved to be conformal primary superfields. These field strengths are higher spin generalisations of the (linearised) N=2 super-Cotton tensor, which controls the superspace geometry of conformal supergravity. We also construct the higher spin extensions of the linearised N=2 conformal supergravity action. We provide two dually equivalent off-shell formulations for massless higher spin N=2 supermultiplets. They involve one and the same superconformal prepotential but differ in the compensators used. For the lowest superspin value 3/2, these higher spin series terminate at the linearised actions for the (1,1) minimal and w=-1 non-minimal N=2 Poincaré supergravity theories constructed in arXiv:1109.0496. Similar to the pure 3D supergravity actions, their higher spin counterparts propagate no degrees of freedom. However, the massless higher spin supermultiplets are used to construct off-shell massive N=2 supermultiplets by combining the massless actions with those describing higher spin extensions of the linearised N=2 conformal supergravity. We also demonstrate that every higher spin super-Cotton tensor can be represented as a linear superposition of the equations of motion for the corresponding massless higher spin supermultiplet, with the coefficients being higher-derivative linear operators.
