An update to the MARVEL dataset and ExoMol line list for 12C2

The spectrum of dicarbon (C2) is important in astrophysics and for spectroscopic studies of plasmas and flames. The C2 spectrum is characterized by many band systems with new ones still being actively identified; astronomical observations involve eight of these bands. Recently, Furtenbacher et al. (2016, Astrophys. J. Suppl., 224, 44) presented a set of 5699 empirical energy levels for 12C2, distributed among 11 electronic states and 98 vibronic bands, derived from 42 experimental studies and obtained using the MARVEL (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) procedure. Here, we add data from 13 new sources and update data from 5 sources. Many of these data sources characterize high-lying electronic states, including the newly detected 3Pig state. Older studies have been included following improvements in the MARVEL procedure which allow their uncertainties to be estimated. These older works in particular determine levels in the C1Pig state, the upper state of the insufficiently characterized Deslandres-d'Azambuja (C1Pig-A1Piu) band. The new compilation considers a total of 31323 transitions and derives 7047 empirical(MARVEL) energy levels spanning 20 electronic and 142 vibronic states. These new empirical energy levels are used here to update the 8states C2 ExoMol line list. This updated line list is highly suitable for high-resolution cross-correlation studies in astronomical spectroscopy of, for example, exoplanets, as 99.4% of the transitions with intensities over 10^(-18) cm/molecule at 1000 K have frequencies determined by empirical energy levels.

The ExoMolOP Database: Cross-sections and k-tables for Molecules of Interest in High-Temperature Exoplanet Atmospheres

A publicly available database of opacities for molecules of astrophysical interest, ExoMolOP, has been compiled for over 80 species, based on the latest line list data from the ExoMol, HITEMP and MoLLIST databases. These data are generally suitable for characterising high temperature exoplanet or cool stellar/substellar atmospheres, and have been computed at a variety of pressures and temperatures, with a few molecules included at room-temperature only from the HITRAN database. The data are formatted in different ways for four different exoplanet atmosphere retrieval codes; ARCiS, TauREx, NEMESIS and petitRADTRANS, and include both cross-sections (at R~=~$\fracλ{Δλ}$~=~15,000) and k-tables (at R~=~$\fracλ{Δλ}$~=~1000) for the 0.3~-~50$μ$m wavelength region. Opacity files can be downloaded and used directly for these codes. Atomic data for alkali metals Na and K are also included, using data from the NIST database and the latest line shapes for the resonance lines. Broadening parameters have been taken from the literature where available, or from those for a known molecule with similar molecular properties where no broadening data are available. The data are available from www.exomol.com.

Analysis of the TiO isotopologues in stellar optical spectra

This study is based on the use of the new ExoMol TiO rovibronic line lists to identify and model TiO isotopologue features in spectra of M-dwarfs. We aim to investigate problems involving the computation of electronic bands for different isotopologues of TiO by modelling optical spectra of late-type stars and to determine their Ti isotopic abundances, to compare the TiO isotopologues spectra computed using line lists by different authors. We fit theoretical synthetic spectra to the observed stellar molecular bands of TiO. We model spectra of two M-dwarfs: GJ 15A (M1V) and GJ 15B (M3 V) to determine Ti isotopic ratios in their atmospheres. We demonstrate the accuracy of the ExoMol {\sc Toto} line list for differentisotopologues of TiO and the possibility of determining accurate Ti isotope abundances in a numberof spectral ranges. The 7580--7594 Å spectral range seems particularly useful, with two atomic linesof Fe I and molecular band heads of $^{50}Ti$O, $^{49}Ti$O, $^{48}Ti$O, $^{47}Ti$O clearly observable in our two M-dwarf spectra. We determine non-solar Ti isotopic ratios of $^{46}Ti$ : $^{47}Ti$ : $^{48}Ti$ : $^{49}Ti$ : $^{50}Ti$ = 7.9 : 5.2 : 72.8 : 7.9 :6.2 for GJ 15A and 7.4 : 4.2 : 76.6 : 5.8 : 6.0 for GJ 15B with accuracy of order $\pm$ 0.2. [Ti] = 0.040 and 0.199 within accuracy $\pm$ 0.10 were also determined for GJ 15A and GJ 15B, respectively. We find that the ExoMol {\sc Toto} TiO line list: a) describes the fine details in line position and intensities of the M-dwarf spectra better than other available TiO line lists; b) correctly reproduces the positions and intensities of the TiO isotopologue band heads observed in M-dwarf spectra; c) can be used to determine Ti isotope abundances in atmospheres of M-stars.

The 2020 release of the ExoMol database: molecular line lists for exoplanet and other hot atmospheres

The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides molecular data for spectroscopic studies of hot atmospheres. While the data is intended for studies of exoplanets and other astronomical bodies, the dataset is widely applicable. The basic form of the database is extensive line lists; these are supplemented with partition functions, state lifetimes, cooling functions, Landé g-factors, temperature-dependent cross sections, opacities, pressure broadening parameters, $k$-coefficients and dipoles. This paper presents the latest release of the database which has been expanded to consider 80 molecules and 190 isotopologues totaling over 700 billion transitions. While the spectroscopic data is concentrated at infrared and visible wavelengths, ultraviolet transitions are being increasingly considered in response to requests from observers. The core of the database comes from the ExoMol project which primarily uses theoretical methods, albeit usually fine-tuned to reproduce laboratory spectra, to generate very extensive line lists for studies of hot bodies. The data has recently been supplemented by line lists deriving from direct laboratory observations, albeit usually with the use of ab initio transition intensities. A major push in the new release is towards accurate characterisation of transition frequencies for use in high resolution studies of exoplanets and other bodies.

Molecular Cross Sections for High Resolution Spectroscopy of Super Earths, Warm Neptunes and Hot Jupiters

High resolution spectroscopy (HRS) has been used to detect a number of species in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters. Key to such detections is accurately and precisely modelled spectra for cross-correlation against the R$\gtrsim$20,000 observations. There is a need for the latest generation of opacities which form the basis for high signal-to-noise detections using such spectra. In this study we present and make publicly available cross sections for six molecular species, H$_2$O, CO, HCN, CH$_4$, NH$_3$ and CO$_2$ using the latest line lists most suitable for low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. We focus on the infrared (0.95-5~$μ$m) and between 500-1500~K where these species have strong spectral signatures. We generate these cross sections on a grid of pressures and temperatures typical for the photospheres of super Earth, warm Neptunes and hot Jupiters using the latest H$_2$ and He pressure broadening. We highlight the most prominent infrared spectral features by modelling three representative exoplanets, GJ~1214~b, GJ~3470~b and HD~189733~b, which encompass a wide range in temperature, mass and radii. In addition, we verify the line lists for H$_2$O, CO and HCN with previous high resolution observations of hot Jupiters. However, we are unable to detect CH$_4$ with our new cross sections from HRS observations of HD~102195~b. These high accuracy opacities are critical for atmospheric detections with HRS and will be continually updated as new data becomes available.

The high-temperature rotation-vibration spectrum and rotational clustering of silylene (SiH$_2$)

A rotation-vibration line list for the electronic ground state ($\tilde{X}^{1}A_{1}$) of SiH$_2$ is presented. The line list, named CATS, is suitable for temperatures up to 2000 K and covers the wavenumber range 0 - 10,000 cm$^{-1}$(wavelengths $>1.0$ $μ$m) for states with rotational excitation up to $J=52$. Over 310 million transitions between 593 804 energy levels have been computed variationally with a new empirically refined potential energy surface, determined by refining to 75 empirical term values with $J\leq 5$ and a newly computed high-level ab initio dipole moment surface. This is the first, comprehensive high-temperature line list to be reported for SiH$_2$ and it is expected to aid the study of silylene in plasma physics, industrial processes and possible astronomical detection. Furthermore, we investigate the phenomenon of rotational energy level clustering in the spectrum of SiH$_2$. The CATS line list is available from the ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) and the CDS database.

Spectroscopy of YO from first principles

We report an ab initio study on the spectroscopy of the open-shell diatomic molecule yttrium oxide, YO. The study considers the six lowest doublet states, $X\,{}^{2}Σ^{+}$, $A\,{}^{2}Π$, $C\,{}^{2}Π$, $A'\,{}^{2}Δ$, $B\,{}^{2}Σ^{+}$, $D\,{}^{2}Σ^{+}$ and a few higher-lying quartet states using high levels of electronic structure theory and accurate nuclear motion calculations. The coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples, CCSD(T), and multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) methods are employed in conjunction with a relativistic pseudopotential on the yttrium atom and a series of correlation-consistent basis sets ranging in size from triple-$ζ$ to quintuple-$ζ$ quality. Core-valence correlation effects are taken into account and complete basis set limit extrapolation is performed for CCSD(T). Spin-orbit coupling is included through the use of both MRCI state-interaction with spin-orbit (SI-SO) approach and four-component relativistic equation-of-motion CCSD calculations. Using the ab initio data for bond lengths ranging from 1.0 to 2.5 A, we compute 6 potential energy, 12 spin-orbit, 8 electronic angular momentum, 6 electric dipole moment and 12 transition dipole moment (4 parallel and 8 perpendicular) curves which provide a complete description of the spectroscopy of the system of six lowest doublet states. The Duo nuclear motion program is used to solve the coupled nuclear motion Schrödinger equation for these six electronic states. The spectra of $^{89}$Y$^{16}$O simulated for different temperatures are compared with several available high resolution experimental studies; good agreement is found once minor adjustments are made to the electronic excitation energies.

Empirical Line Lists in the ExoMol Database

The ExoMol database aims to provide comprehensive molecular line lists for exoplanetary and other hot atmospheres. The data are expanded by inclusion of empirically derived line lists taken from the literature for a series of diatomic molecules, namely CH, NH, OH, AlCl, AlF, OH$^+$, CaF, MgF, KF, NaF, LiCl, LiF, MgH, TiH, CrH, FeH, C$_2$, CP, CN, CaH, and triplet N$_2$. Generally, these line lists are constructed from measured spectra using a combination of effective rotational Hamiltonian models for the line positions and ab initio (transition) dipole moments to provide intensities. This work results in the inclusion of 22 new molecules (36 new isotopologues) in the ExoMol database.

First observation of electric-quadrupole infrared transitions in water vapour

Molecular absorption of infrared radiation is generally due to ro-vibrational electric-dipole transitions. Electric-quadrupole transitions may still occur, but they are typically a million times weaker than electric-dipole transitions, rendering their observation extremely challenging. In polyatomic or polar diatomic molecules, ro-vibrational quadrupole transitions have never been observed. Here, we report the first direct detection of quadrupole transitions in water vapor. The detected quadrupole lines have intensity largely above the standard dipole intensity cut-off of spectroscopic databases and thus are important for accurate atmospheric and astronomical remote sensing.

Analysis of first overtone bands of isotopologues of CO and SiO in stellar spectra

The first overtone ($Δv$ = 2) bands of the monosubstituted isotopologues of CO at 2.3 $μ$m in the spectrum of Arcturus (K2 III), and of the monosubstituted isotopologues of SiO at 4 $μ$m in the spectrum of the red giant HD196610 (M6 III) are modelled. To investigate problems involving the computation of the first overtone bands of isotopologues of CO and SiO in spectra of late-type stars and to determine isotopic abundances. We use fits of theoretical synthetic spectra to the observed stellar molecular bands of CO and SiO to determine abundances of isotopes of C, O and Si. Fits of synthetic spectra of the \CO first overtone bands at 2.3 $μ$m computed with three available line lists (Goorvitch, HITEMP2010 and Li et al.) to the observed spectrum of Arcturus provide the same carbon abundance [C]=$-0.6$ and isotopic ratio of carbon $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C=10 $\pm$ 2. However, the quality of fits to the observed spectrum differ for three line lists used. Furthermore, the derived oxygen isotopic ratio $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O = 2000 $\pm$ 500 is larger than that known in the solar system where $^{16}$O/$^{18}$O = 500. The silicon isotopic ratio in the atmosphere of the red giant HD196610 is revised. Using the ExoMol SiO line list with appropriate statistical weights for the SiO isotopologues the `non-solar' ratio $^{28}$Si:$^{29}$Si:$^{30}$Si = 0.86$\pm$0.03:0.12$\pm$0.02:0.02$\pm$0.01 is obtained. We found that a) the computed isotopic carbon and silicon ratios determined by the fits to the observed spectrum depend on the adopted abundance of C and Si, respectively; b) Correct treatment of the nuclear spin degeneracies parameter is of crucial importance for the use of nowadays HITRAN/ExoMol line lists in the astrophysical computations.

ExoMol molecular line lists XXXV: a rotation-vibration line list for hot ammonia

A new hot line list for $^{14}$NH$_3$ is presented. The line list CoYuTe was constructed using an accurate, empirically refined potential energy surface and a CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ ab initio dipole moment surface of ammonia, previously reported. The line list is an improvement of the ammonia line list BYTe [Yurchenko et al., Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc., 413, 1828 (2011)]. The CoYuTe line list covers wavenumbers up to 20000 cm$^{-1}$, i.e. wavelengths beyond 0.5 $μ$m for temperatures up to 1500 K. Comparisons with the high temperature experimental data from the literature show excellent agrement for wavenumbers below 6000 cm$^{-1}$. The CoYuTe line list contains 16.9 billion transitions and is available from the ExoMol website (www.exomol.com) and the CDS database.

ExoMol molecular line lists XXXVI: $X\ {}^2Π- X\ {}^2Π$ and $A\ {}^2Σ^+ - X\ {}^2Π$ transitions of SH

The GYT line list covering rotational, rovibrational and rovibronic transitions of the mercapto radical SH is presented. This work extends and replaces the SNaSH line list [Yurchenko et al., 2018, MNRAS, 478, 270] which covers the ground (electronic) $X$ $^{2}Π$ state only. This extension is prompted by the tentative identification of the ultra-violet features of SH as being of importance in the transmission spectrum of the ultra-hot Jupiter exoplanet WASP-121b [Evans et al., 2018, AJ., 156, 283]. This GYT line list model is generated by fitting empirical potential energy, spin-orbit and electronic angular momenta functions to experimentally measured wavelengths within the $X$ $^{2}Π$ and $A$ $^{2}Σ^{+}$ states and to the $A$ $^{2}Σ^{+}$ - $X$ $^{2}Π$ band system using ab initio curves as a starting reference point. The fits are compatible with the quoted uncertainty of the experimental data used of $\sim$ 0.03 - 0.3 cm$^{-1}$. The GYT line list covers wavelengths longer than 0.256 $μ$m and includes 7686 rovibronic states and 572 145 transitions for $^{32}$SH. Line lists for the $^{33}$SH, $^{34}$SH, $^{36}$SH and $^{32}$SD isotopologues are generated including a consideration of non-Born-Oppenheimer effects for SD. The line lists are available from the CDS (http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) data bases.

ExoMol Molecular linelists -- XXXIII. The spectrum of Titanium Oxide

Accurate line lists are crucial for correctly modelling a variety of astrophysical phenomena, including stellar photospheres and the atmospheres of extra-solar planets. This paper presents a new line database Toto for the main isotopologues of titanium oxide (TiO): $^{46}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{47}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{48}$Ti$^{16}$O, $^{49}$Ti$^{16}$O and $^{50}$Ti$^{16}$O. The TiO line list contains transitions with wave-numbers up to 30,000 cm$^{-1}$ ie long-wards of 0.33 $μ$m. The Toto line list includes all dipole-allowed transitions between 13 low-lying electronic states (X $^3Δ$, a $^1Δ$, d $^1Σ^+$, E $^3Π$, A $^3Φ$ B $^3Π$, C $^3Δ$, b $^1Π$, c $^1Φ$, f $^1Δ$, e $^1Σ^+$). Ab initio potential energy curves (PECs) are computed at the icMRCI level and combined with spin-orbit and other coupling curves. These PECs and couplings are iteratively refined to match known empirical energy levels. Accurate line intensities are generated using ab initio dipole moment curves. The Toto line lists are appropriate for temperatures below 5000 K and contain 30 million transitions for TiO; it is made available in electronic form via the CDS data centre and via www.exomol.com. Tests of the line lists show greatly improved agreement with observed spectra for objects such as M-dwarfs GJ876 and GL581.

ExoMol line list XXXIV: A Rovibrational Line List for Phosphinidene (PH) in its $X\,{}^3Σ^-$ and $a\,{}^1Δ$ Electronic States

A rovibronic line list for the ground ($X$ $^3Σ^-$) and first excited ($a$ $^1Δ$) states of phosphinidene, $^{31}$PH, is computed. The line list is designed for studies of exoplanetary and cool stellar atmospheres with temperatures up to 4000 K. A combination of empirical and ab initio data are used to produce the line list: potential energy curves (PECs) are fitted using experimental transition frequencies; these transitions are reproduced with a root mean square error of 0.01 cm$^{-1}$. The nuclear Schrödinger is solved using these PECs plus Born-Oppenheimer and spin splitting correction terms. Line intensities and Einstein $A$ coefficients are computed using ab initio Dipole Moment Curves (DMC) $X$-$X$ and $a$-$a$. The resulting LaTY line list, which contains 65055 transitions for 2528 rovibronic states up to 24500 cm$^{-1}$ and $J=80$ is used to simulate spectra in emission and absorption at a range of temperatures. The line list is made available in electronic form at the CDS and ExoMol databases.

A Variationally Computed IR Line List for the Methyl Radical CH$_3$

We present the first variational calculation of a hot temperature ab initio line list for the CH$_3$ radical. It is based on a high level ab initio potential energy surface and dipole moment surface of CH$_3$ in the ground electronic state. The ro-vibrational energy levels and Einstein $A$ coefficients were calculated using the general-molecule variational approach implemented in the computer program TROVE. Vibrational energies and vibrational intensities are found to be in very good agreement with the available experimental data. The line list comprises 9,127,123 ro-vibrational states ($J\le 40$) and 2,058,655,166 transitions covering the wavenumber range up to 10000 cm$^{-1}$ and should be suitable for temperatures up to $T= 1500$ K.

Theoretical rotation-vibration spectroscopy of {\it cis}- and {\it trans}-diphosphene (P$_2$H$_2$) and the deuterated species P$_2$HD

Growing astronomical interest in phosphorous (P) chemistry is stimulating the search for new interstellar P-bearing molecules; a task requiring detailed knowledge of the microwave and infrared molecular spectrum. In this work, we present comprehensive rotation-vibration line lists of the \cis- and \trans-isomers of diphosphene (P$_2$H$_2$). The line lists have been generated using robust, first-principles methodologies based on newly computed, high-level \ai\ potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. Transitions are considered between states with energies up to $8000$~cm$^{-1}$ and total angular momentum $J\leq25$. These are the first-ever line lists to be reported for P$_2$H$_2$ and they should significantly facilitate future spectroscopic characterization of this system. The deuterated species \trans-P$_2$HD and the effect of its dynamic dipole moment on the rovibrational spectrum is also discussed.

ExoMol line lists - XXXII. The rovibronic spectrum of MgO

Line lists for magnesium oxide are computed and extensive comparisons are made with existing experimental spectra. The LiTY line lists cover all ro-vibration transitions within the five lowest-lying electronic states ($X\,{}^1Σ^+$, $a\,{}^3Π$, $A\,{}^1Π$, $B\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $b\,{}^3Σ^{+}$) and five isotopologues: $^{24}$Mg$^{16}$O, $^{25}$Mg$^{16}$O, $^{26}$Mg$^{16}$O, $^{24}$Mg$^{17}$O, $^{24}$Mg$^{18}$O, $^{24}$Mg$^{17}$O and $^{24}$Mg$^{18}$O. The calculation use potential energy cures, spin-orbit and electronic angular momentum couplings curves determined by fitting to empirical energy levels; these levels are reproduced to within 0.01 \cm\ in most cases. Computed nuclear-motion wavefunctions are combined with {\it ab initio} dipole moment curves to give transition intensities and excited state radiative lifetimes which are compared with laboraroty measurements. The $^{24}$Mg$^{16}$O line list comprises 186 842 ($J\le 320$) ro-vibronic states and 72 833 173 transitions with angular momenta, $J$, up to 300 and covering wavenumbers up to 33 000 cm$^{-1}$ ($λ> 0.3$ $μ$m). The line lists are suitable for temperatures up to about 5000 K. They are relevant to astrophysical studies of exoplanet atmospheres, cool stars and brown dwarfs, and are made available in electronic form at the CDS and ExoMol databases.

A variationally computed room temperature line list for AsH$_{3}$

Calculations are reported on the rotation-vibration energy levels of the arsine molecule with associated transition intensities. A potential energy surface (PES) obtained from \textit{ab initio} electronic structure calculations is refined to experimental data, and the resulting energy levels display sub-wavenumber accuracy for all reliably known $J=0$ term values under 6500 cm$^{-1}$. After a small empirical adjustment of the band centres, our calculated ($J=1-6$) rovibrational states reproduce 578 experimentally derived energies with a root-mean-square error of 0.122 cm$^{-1}$. Absolute line intensities are computed using the refined PES and a new dipole moment surface (DMS) for transitions between states with energies up to 10~500 cm$^{-1}$ and rotational quantum number $J=30$. The computed DMS reproduces experimental line intensities to within 10\% uncertainty for the $ν_1$ and $ν_3$ bands. Furthermore, our calculated absorption cross-sections display good agreement with the main absorption features recorded in Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for the complete range of $600-6500$ cm$^{-1}$.
