Marvel analysis of the measured high-resolution rovibrational spectra of H2S

44325 measured and assigned transitions of H$_2^{32}$S, the parent isotopologue of the hydrogen sulfide molecule, are collated from 33 publications into a single database and reviewed critically. Based on this information, rotation-vibration energy levels are determined for the ground electronic state using the Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels (MARVEL) technique. The ortho and para principal components of the measured spectroscopic network of H$_2^{32}$S are considered separately. The verified set of 25293 ortho- and 18778 para- H$_2^{32}$S transitions determine 3969 ortho and 3467 para energy levels. The Marvel results are compared with alternative data compilations, including a theoretical variational linelist.

ExoMol line lists XXXI: Spectroscopy of lowest eights electronic states of C$_2$

Accurate line lists for the carbon dimer, C$_2$, are presented. These line lists cover rovibronic transitions between the eight lowest electronic states: $X\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$, $a\,{}^{3}Π_{u}$, $A\,{}^{1}Π_{u}$, $b\,^{3}Σ_{g}^{-}$, $b\,^{3}Σ_{g}^{-}$, $c\,^{3}Σ_{u}^{+}$, $d\,{}^{3}Π_{g}$, $B\,{}^{1}Δ_{g}$, $B^\prime\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$. Potential energy curves (PECs) and transition dipole moment curves are computed on a large grid of geometries using the aug-cc-pwCVQZ-DK/MRCI level of theory including core and core-valence correlations and scalar relativistic energy corrections. The same level of theory is used to compute spin-orbit and electronic angular momentum couplings. The PECs and couplings are refined by fitting to the empirical (MARVEL) energies of $^{12}$C$_2$ using the nuclear-motion program Duo. The transition dipole moment curves are represented as analytical functions to reduce the numerical noise when computing transition line strengths. Partition functions, full line lists, Landé-factors and lifetimes for three main isotopologues of C$_2$ ($^{12}$C$_2$,$^{13}$C$_2$ and $^{12}$C$^{13}$C) are made available in electronic form from the CDS (http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) databases.

Climbing the rotational ladder to chirality

Molecular chirality is conventionally understood as space-inversion-symmetry breaking in the equilibrium structure of molecules. Less well known is that achiral molecules can be made chiral through extreme rotational excitation. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a clear strategy for generating rotationally-induced chirality (RIC): An optical centrifuge rotationally excites the phosphine molecule (PH$_3$) into chiral cluster states that correspond to clockwise ($R$-enantiomer) or anticlockwise ($L$-enantiomer) rotation about axes almost coinciding with single P-H bonds. Application of a strong dc electric field during the centrifuge pulse favors the production of one rotating enantiomeric form over the other, creating dynamically chiral molecules with $permanently$ oriented rotational angular momentum. This essential step toward characterizing RIC promises a fresh perspective on chirality as a fundamental aspect of nature.

The ExoMol database: molecular line lists for exoplanet and other hot atmospheres

The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides extensive line lists of molecular transitions which are valid over extended temperatures ranges. The status of the current release of the database is reviewed and a new data structure is specified. This structure augments the provision of energy levels (and hence transition frequencies) and Einstein $A$ coefficients with other key properties, including lifetimes of individual states, temperature-dependent cooling functions, Landé $g$-factors, partition functions, cross sections, $k$-coefficients and transition dipoles with phase relations. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of pressure broadening parameters. The new data structure includes a definition file which provides the necessary information for utilities accessing ExoMol through its application programming interface (API). Prospects for the inclusion of new species into the database are discussed.

Structure-based Sampling and Self-correcting Machine Learning for Accurate Calculations of Potential Energy Surfaces and Vibrational Levels

We present an efficient approach for generating highly accurate molecular potential energy surfaces (PESs) using self-correcting, kernel ridge regression (KRR) based machine learning (ML). We introduce structure-based sampling to automatically assign nuclear configurations from a pre-defined grid to the training and prediction sets, respectively. Accurate high-level \textit{ab initio} energies are required only for the points in the training set, while the energies for the remaining points are provided by the ML model with negligible computational cost. The proposed sampling procedure is shown to be superior to random sampling and also eliminates the need for training several ML models. Self-correcting machine learning has been implemented such that each additional layer corrects errors from the previous layer. The performance of our approach is demonstrated in a case study on a published high-level \textit{ab initio} PES of methyl chloride with 44,819 points. The ML model is trained on sets of different size and then used to predict the energies for tens of thousands of nuclear configurations within seconds. The resulting datasets are utilized in variational calculations of the vibrational energy levels of CH$_3$Cl. By using both structure-based sampling and self-correction, the size of the training set can be kept small (e.g. 10\% of the points) without any significant loss of accuracy. In \textit{ab initio} rovibrational spectroscopy, it is thus possible to reduce the number of computationally costly electronic structure calculations through structure-based sampling and self-correcting KKR-based machine learning by up to 90\%.

A global \textit{ab initio} dipole moment surface for methyl chloride

A new dipole moment surface (DMS) for methyl chloride has been generated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ(+d for Cl) level of theory. To represent the DMS, a symmetry-adapted analytic representation in terms of nine vibrational coordinates has been developed and implemented. Variational calculations of the infrared spectrum of CH$_3$Cl show good agreement with a range of experimental results. This includes vibrational transition moments, absolute line intensities of the $ν_1$, $ν_4$, $ν_5$ and $3ν_6$ bands, and a rotation-vibration line list for both CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl including states up to $J=85$ and vibrational band origins up to $4400{\,}$cm$^{-1}$. Across the spectrum band shape and structure are well reproduced and computed absolute line intensities are comparable with highly accurate experimental measurements for certain fundamental bands. We thus recommend the DMS for future use.

Accurate \textit{ab initio} vibrational energies of methyl chloride

Two new nine-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been generated using high-level \textit{ab initio} theory for the two main isotopologues of methyl chloride, CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl. The respective PESs, CBS-35$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ and CBS-37$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$, are based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit, and incorporate a range of higher-level (HL) additive energy corrections to account for core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms, scalar relativistic effects, and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. Variational calculations of the vibrational energy levels were performed using the computer program TROVE, whose functionality has been extended to handle molecules of the form XY$_3$Z. Fully converged energies were obtained by means of a complete vibrational basis set extrapolation. The CBS-35$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ and CBS-37$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ PESs reproduce the fundamental term values with root-mean-square errors of $0.75$ and $1.00{\,}$cm$^{-1}$ respectively. An analysis of the combined effect of the HL corrections and CBS extrapolation on the vibrational wavenumbers indicates that both are needed to compute accurate theoretical results for methyl chloride. We believe that it would be extremely challenging to go beyond the accuracy currently achieved for CH$_3$Cl without empirical refinement of the respective PESs.

A global potential energy surface and dipole moment surface for silane

A new nine-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) and dipole moment surface (DMS) for silane have been generated using high-level \textit{ab initio} theory. The PES, CBS-F12$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$, reproduces all four fundamental term values for $^{28}$SiH$_4$ with sub-wavenumber accuracy, resulting in an overall root-mean-square (rms) error of $0.63{\,}$cm$^{-1}$. The PES is based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit, and incorporates a range of higher-level additive energy corrections to account for core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms, and scalar relativistic effects. Systematic errors in computed intra-band rotational energy levels are reduced by empirically refining the equilibrium geometry. The resultant Si-H bond length is in excellent agreement with previous experimental and theoretical values. Vibrational transition moments, absolute line intensities of the $ν_3$ band, and the infrared spectrum for $^{28}$SiH$_4$ including states up to $J=20$ and vibrational band origins up to $5000{\,}$cm$^{-1}$ are calculated and compared with available experimental results. The DMS tends to marginally overestimate the strength of line intensities. Despite this, band shape and structure across the spectrum are well reproduced and show good agreement with experiment. We thus recommend the PES and DMS for future use.

Accurate prediction of H$_3$O$^+$ and D$_3$O$^+$ sensitivity coefficients to probe a variable proton-to-electron mass ratio

The mass sensitivity of the vibration-rotation-inversion transitions of H$_3{}^{16}$O$^+$, H$_3{}^{18}$O$^+$, and D$_3{}^{16}$O$^+$ is investigated variationally using the nuclear motion program TROVE~\citep{TROVE:2007}. The calculations utilize new high-level \textit{ab initio} potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. Along with the mass dependence, frequency data and Einstein A coefficients are computed for all transitions probed. Particular attention is paid to the $Δ|k|=3$ and $Δ|k-l|=3$ transitions comprising the accidentally coinciding $|J,K\!=\!0,v_2\!=\!0^+\rangle$ and $|J,K\!=\!3,v_2\!=\!0^-\rangle$ rotation-inversion energy levels. The newly computed probes exhibit sensitivities comparable to their ammonia and methanol counterparts, thus demonstrating their potential for testing the cosmological stability of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. The theoretical TROVE results are in close agreement with sensitivities obtained using the nonrigid and rigid inverter approximate models, confirming that the \textit{ab initio} theory used in the present study is adequate.

Anomalous phosphine sensitivity coefficients as probes for a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio

A robust variational approach is used to investigate the sensitivity of the rotation-vibration spectrum of phosphine (PH$_3$) to a possible cosmological variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio, $μ$. Whilst the majority of computed sensitivity coefficients, $T$, involving the low-lying vibrational states acquire the expected values of $T\approx-1$ and $T\approx-1/2$ for rotational and ro-vibrational transitions, respectively, anomalous sensitivities are uncovered for the $A_1\!-\!A_2$ splittings in the $ν_2/ν_4$, $ν_1/ν_3$ and $2ν_4^{\ell=0}/2ν_4^{\ell=2}$ manifolds of PH$_3$. A pronounced Coriolis interaction between these states in conjunction with accidentally degenerate $A_1$ and $A_2$ energy levels produces a series of enhanced sensitivity coefficients. Phosphine is expected to occur in a number of different astrophysical environments and has potential for investigating a drifting constant. Furthermore, the displayed behaviour hints at a wider trend in molecules of ${\bf C}_{3\mathrm{v}}\mathrm{(M)}$ symmetry, thus demonstrating that the splittings induced by higher-order ro-vibrational interactions are well suited for probing $μ$ in other symmetric top molecules in space, since these low-frequency transitions can be straightforwardly detected by radio telescopes.

Enhanced sensitivity to a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio in ammonia

Numerous accidental near-degeneracies exist between the $2ν_2$ and $ν_4$ rotation-vibration energy levels of ammonia. Transitions between these two states possess significantly enhanced sensitivity to a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio $μ$. Using a robust variational approach to determine the mass sensitivity of the energy levels along with accurate experimental values for the energies, sensitivity coefficients have been calculated for over 350 microwave, submillimetre and far infrared transitions up to $J\!=\!15$ for $^{14}$NH$_3$. The sensitivities are the largest found in ammonia to date. One particular transition, although extremely weak, has a sensitivity of $T=-16,738$ and illustrates the huge enhancement that can occur between close-lying energy levels. More promising however are a set of previously measured transitions with $T=-32$ to $28$. Given the astrophysical importance of ammonia, the sensitivities presented here confirm that $^{14}$NH$_3$ can be used exclusively to constrain a spatial or temporal variation of $μ$. Thus, certain systematic errors which affect the ammonia method can be eliminated. For all transitions analyzed we provide frequency data and Einstein A coefficients to guide future laboratory and astronomical observations.

The rotation-vibration spectrum of methyl fluoride from first principles

Accurate \textit{ab initio} calculations on the rotation-vibration spectrum of methyl fluoride (\ce{CH3F}) are reported. A new nine-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) and dipole moment surface (DMS) have been generated using high-level electronic structure methods. Notably, the PES was constructed from explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and considered additional energy corrections to account for core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms beyond perturbative triples, scalar relativistic effects, and the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction. The PES and DMS are evaluated through robust variational nuclear motion computations of pure rotational and vibrational energy levels, the equilibrium geometry of \ce{CH3F}, vibrational transition moments, absolute line intensities of the $ν_6$ band, and the rotation-vibration spectrum up to $J=40$. The computed results show excellent agreement with a range of experimental sources, in particular the six fundamentals are reproduced with a root-mean-square error of 0.69~cm$^{-1}$. This work represents the most accurate theoretical treatment of the rovibrational spectrum of \ce{CH3F} to date.

ExoMol molecular line lists XXX: a complete high-accuracy line list for water

A new line list for H$_2$$^{16}$O is presented. This line list, which is called POKAZATEL, includes transitions between rotation-vibrational energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ in energy and is the most complete to date. The potential energy surface (PES) used for producing the line list was obtained by fitting a high-quality ab initio PES to experimental energy levels with energies of 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and for rotational excitations up to $J=5$. The final line list comprises all energy levels up to 41000 cm$^{-1}$ and rotational angular momentum $J$ up to 72. An accurate ab initio dipole moment surface (DMS) was used for the calculation of line intensities and reproduces high-precision experimental intensity data with an accuracy close to 1 %. The final line list uses empirical energy levels whenever they are available, to ensure that line positions are reproduced as accurately as possible. The POKAZATEL line list contains over 5 billion transitions and is available from the ExoMol website (www.exomol.com) and the CDS database.

SiS has long been observed in the circumstellar medium of the carbon-rich star IRC+10216 CW Leo. Comprehensive and accurate rotation-vibrational line lists and partition functions are computed for 12 isotopologues of silicon sulphide ($^{28}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{32}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{34}$S, $^{28}$Si$^{36}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{36}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{33}$S, $^{30}$Si$^{36}$S) in its ground (X $^1Σ^+$) electronic state. The calculations employ an existing spectroscopically accurate potential energy curve (PEC) derived from experimental measurements and a newly-computed ab initio dipole moment curve (DMC). The $^{28}$Si$^{32}$S line list includes 10104 states and 91715 transitions. These line lists are available from the ExoMol website www.exomol.com and the CDS database.

ExoMol molecular line lists - XXVII: spectra of C2H4

A new line list for ethylene, $^{12}$C$_2$$^1$H$_4$ is presented. The line list is based on high level ab initio potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. The potential energy surface is refined by fitting to experimental energies. The line list covers the range up to 7000 cm$^{-1}$ (1.43 $μ$m) with all ro-vibrational transitions (50 billion) with the lower state below 5000 cm$^{-1}$ included and thus should be applicable for temperatures up to 700 K. A technique for computing molecular opacities from vibrational band intensities is proposed and used to provide temperature dependent cross sections of ethylene for shorter wavelength and higher temperatures. When combined with realistic band profiles (such as the proposed three-band model), the vibrational intensity technique offers a cheap but reasonably accurate alternative to the full ro-vibrational calculations at high temperatures and should be reliable for representing molecular opacities. The C$_2$H$_4$ line list, which is called MaYTY, is made available in electronic form from the CDS.

ExoMol line lists XXVIII: The rovibronic spectrum of AlH

A new line list for AlH is produced. The WYLLoT line list spans two electronic states $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$. A diabatic model is used to model the shallow potential energy curve of the $A\,{}^1Π$ state, which has a strong pre-dissociative character with only two bound vibrational states. Both potential energy curves are empirical and were obtained by fitting to experimentally derived energies of the $X\,{}^1Σ^+$ and $A\,{}^1Π$ electronic states using the diatomic nuclear motion codes Level and Duo. High temperature line lists plus partition functions and lifetimes for three isotopologues $^{27}$AlH, $^{27}$AlD and $^{26}$AlH were generated using ab initio dipole moments. The line lists cover both the $X$--$X$ and $A$--$X$ systems and are made available in electronic form at the CDS and ExoMol databases.

The ExoMol Atlas of Molecular Opacities

The ExoMol project is dedicated to providing molecular line lists for exoplanet and other hot atmospheres. The ExoMol procedure uses a mixture of ab initio calculations and available laboratory data. The actual line lists are generated using variational nuclear motion calculations. These line lists form the input for opacity models for cool stars and brown dwarfs as well as for radiative transport models involving exoplanets. This paper is a collection of molecular opacities for 52 molecules (130 isotopologues) at two reference temperatures, 300 K and 2000 K, using line lists from the ExoMol database. So far, ExoMol line lists have been generated for about 30 key molecular species. Other line lists are taken from external sources or from our work predating the ExoMol project. An overview of the line lists generated by ExoMol thus far is presented and used to evaluate further molecular data needs. Other line lists are also considered. The requirement for completeness within a line list is emphasized and needs for further line lists discussed.

ExoMol molecular line lists - XXVI: spectra of SH and NS

Line lists for the sulphur-containing molecules SH (the mercapto radical) and NS are computed as part of the ExoMol project. These line lists consider transitions within the $X$ ${}^2Π$ ground state for $^{32}$SH, $^{33}$SH, $^{34}$SH and $^{\text{32}}$SD, and $^{14}$N$^{32}$S, $^{14}$N$^{33}$S, $^{14}$N$^{34}$S, $^{14}$N$^{36}$S and $^{15}$N$^{32}$S. Ab initio potential energy (PEC) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) curves are computed and then improved by fitting to experimentally observed transitions. Fully ab initio dipole moment curves (DMCs) computed at high level of theory are used to produce the final line lists. For SH, our fit gives a root-mean-square (rms) error of 0.03 cm$^{-1}$ between the observed ($v_{\rm max}=4$, $J_{\rm max} = 34.5$) and calculated transitions wavenumbers; this is extrapolated such that all $X$ $^2Π$ rotational-vibrational-electronic (rovibronic) bound states are considered. For $^{\text{32}}$SH the resulting line list contains about 81000 transitions and 2300 rovibronic states, considering levels up to $v_{\rm max} = 14$ and $J_{\rm max} = 60.5$. For NS the refinement used a combination of experimentally determined frequencies and energy levels and led to an rms fitting error of 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. Each NS calculated line list includes around 2.8 million transitions and 31000 rovibronic states with a vibrational range up to $v=53$ and rotational range to $J=235.5$, which covers up to 23000 cm$^{-1}$. Both line lists should be complete for temperatures up to 5000 K. Example spectra simulated using this line list are shown and comparisons made to the existing data in the CDMS database. The line lists are available from the CDS (http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) data bases.
