Fitting power spectrum of scalar perturbations for primordial black hole production during inflation

We propose a simple analytic fit for the power spectrum of scalar (curvature) perturbations during inflation, in order to describe slow roll of inflaton and formation of primordial black holes in the early universe, in the framework of single-field models. Our fit is given by a sum of the power spectrum in the slow-roll approximation, needed for a viable description of the cosmic microwave background radiation in agreement with Planck/BICEP/Keck measurements, and the log-normal (Gaussian) fit for the power spectrum enhancement (peak) needed for efficient production of primordial black holes. We use the T-type $α$-attractor models in order to describe slow-roll inflation. Demanding the location and height of the peak to yield the masses of primordial black holes in the asteroid-size window allowed for the whole (current) dark matter to be composed of the primordial black holes, we find the restrictions on the remaining parameters and, most notably, on the width of the peak.

Pole inflation and primordial black holes formation in Starobinsky-like supergravity

We extend the Cecotti-Kallosh model of Starobinsky inflation in supergravity by adding a holomorphic function to the superpotential in order to generate a large peak in the power spectrum of scalar (curvature) perturbations. In our approach, the singular non-canonical kinetic terms are largely responsible for inflation (as an attractor solution), whereas the superpotential is engineered to generate a production of primordial black holes. We study the cases with (i) a linear holomorphic function, (ii) a quadratic holomorphic function, and (iii) an exponential holomorphic function, as regards the dependence of inflation and primordial black holes production upon parameters of those functions and initial conditions, as well as verify viability of inflation with our superpotentials. We find that an efficient production of primordial black holes consistent with CMB measurements is only possible in the second (ii) case. We calculate the masses of the produced primordial black holes and find that they are below the Hawking (black hole) evaporation limit, so that they cannot be part of the current dark matter in our Universe.

Formation of primordial black holes after Starobinsky inflation

We adapted the Appleby-Battye-Starobinsky model of $F(R)$ gravity towards describing double cosmological inflation and formation of primordial black holes with masses up to $10^{19}$ g in the single-field model. We found that it is possible to get an enhancement of the power spectrum of scalar curvature perturbations to the level beyond the Hawking (black hole evaporation) limit of $10^{15}$ g, so that the primordial black holes resulting from gravitational collapse of those large primordial perturbations can survive in the present universe and form part of cold dark matter. Our results agree with the current measurements of cosmic microwave background radiation within $3σ$ but require fine-tuning of the parameters.

Schwarzschild-type black holes in Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson gravity

We study physical properties of a Schwarzschild-type black hole in the framework of the recently proposed Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson (SBR) modified theory of gravity, working perturbatively in the new coupling constant. In particular, we compute the temperature, entropy, pressure and lifetime of a Schwarzschild-type black hole.

On the superstring-inspired quantum correction to the Starobinsky model of inflation

Superstring/M-theory is the theory of quantum gravity that can provide the UV-completion to viable inflation models. We modify the Starobinsky inflation model by adding the Bel-Robinson tensor $T^{μνλρ}$ squared term proposed as the leading quantum correction inspired by superstring theory. The $(R+\frac{1}{6m^2}R^2 -\fracβ{8m^6}T^2)$ model under consideration has two parameters: the inflaton mass $m$ and the string-inspired positive parameter $β$. We derive the equations of motion in the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe and investigate its solutions. We find the physical bounds on the value of the parameter $β$ by demanding the absence of ghosts and consistency of the derived inflationary observables with the measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson gravity

A novel superstring-inspired gravitational theory in four spacetime dimensions is proposed as a sum of the modified $(R+αR^2)$ gravity motivated by the Starobinsky inflation and the Bel-Robinson-tensor-squared term motivated by the eleven-dimensional M-theory dimensionally reduced to four dimensions. The proposed Starobinsky-Bel-Robinson action has only two parameters, which makes it suitable for verifiable physical applications in black hole physics, cosmological inflation and Hawking radiation in the early universe.

E-models of inflation and primordial black holes

We propose and study the new (generalized) E-type $α$-attractor models of inflation, in order to include formation of primordial black holes (PBHs). The inflaton potential has a near-inflection point where slow-roll conditions are violated, thus leading to large scalar perturbations collapsing to PBHs later. An ultra-slow roll (short) phase exists between two (longer) phases of slow-roll inflation. We numerically investigate the phases of inflation, derive the power spectrum of scalar perturbations and calculate the PBHs masses. For certain values of the parameters, the asteroid-size PBHs can be formed with the masses of $10^{17}÷10^{19}$ g, beyond the Hawking evaporation limit and in agreement with current CMB observations. Those PBHs are a candidate for (part of) dark matter in the present universe, while the gravitational waves induced by the PBHs formation may be detectable by the future space-based gravitational interferometers.

Inflation, SUSY breaking, and primordial black holes in modified supergravity coupled to chiral matter

We propose a novel model of the modified (Starobinsky-like) old-minimal-type supergravity coupled to a chiral matter superfield, that can {\it simultaneously} describe multi-field inflation, primordial black hole (PBH) formation, dark matter (DM), and spontaneous supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking after inflation in a Minkowski vacuum. The PBH masses in our supergravity model of double slow-roll inflation, with a short phase of "ultra-slow-roll" between two slow-roll phases, are close to $10^{18}$ g. We find that a significant PBH fraction in the allowed mass window can be supplemented by spontaneous SUSY breaking in the vacuum with the gravitino mass close to the scalaron (inflaton) mass M of the order $10^{13}$ GeV. Our supergravity model favors the {\it composite} nature of DM as a mixture of PBH and heavy gravitinos as the lightest SUSY particles. The composite DM significantly relaxes fine-tuning needed for the whole PBH-DM. The PBH-DM fraction is derived, and the second-order gravitational wave background induced by the enhanced scalar perturbations is calculated. Those gravitational waves may be accessible by the future space-based gravitational interferometers.

Analytic extensions of Starobinsky model of inflation

We study several extensions of the Starobinsky model of inflation, which obey all observational constraints on the inflationary parameters, by demanding that both the inflaton scalar potential in the Einstein frame and the $F(R)$ gravity function in the Jordan frame have the explicit dependence upon fields {\it and} parameters in terms of elementary functions. Our models are continuously connected to the original Starobinsky model via changing the parameters. We modify the Starobinsky $(R+R^2)$ model by adding an $R^3$-term, an $R^4$-term, and an $R^{3/2}$-term, respectively, and calculate the scalar potentials, the inflationary observables and the allowed limits on the deformation parameters by using the latest observational bounds. We find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio in the Starobinsky model modified by the $R^{3/2}$-term significantly increases with raising the parameter in front of that term. On the other side, we deform the scalar potential of the Starobinsky model in the Einstein frame in powers of $y=\exp\left(-\sqrt{\frac{2}{3}}ϕ/M_{Pl}\right)$, where $ϕ$ is the canonical inflaton (scalaron) field, calculate the corresponding $F(R)$ gravity functions in the two new cases, and find the restrictions on the deformation parameters in the lowest orders with respect to the variable $y$ that is physically small during slow-roll inflation.

Exploring the parameter space of modified supergravity for double inflation and primordial black hole formation

We study the parameter space of the effective (with two scalars) models of cosmological inflation and primordial black hole (PBH) formation in the modified $(R+R^2)$ supergravity. Our models describe double inflation, whose first stage is driven by Starobinsky's scalaron coming from the $R^2$ gravity, and whose second stage is driven by another scalar belonging to the supergravity multiplet. The ultra-slow-roll regime between the two stages leads a large peak (enhancement) in the power spectrum of scalar perturbations, which results in efficient PBH formation. Both inflation and PBH formation are generic in our models, while those PBH can account for a significant part or the whole of dark matter. Some of the earlier proposed models in the same class are in tension (over $3σ$) with the observed value of the scalar tilt $n_s$, so that we study more general models with more parameters, and investigate the dependence of the cosmological tilts $(n_s,r)$ and the scalar power spectrum enhancement upon the parameters. The PBH masses and their density fraction (as part of dark matter) are also calculated. A good agreement (between $2σ$ and $3σ$) with the observed value of $n_s$ requires fine tuning of the parameters, and it is only realized in the so-called $δ$-models. Our models offer the (super)gravitational origin of inflation, PBH and dark matter together, and may be confirmed or falsified by future precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation and PBH-induced gravitational waves.

Testing Primordial Black Holes as Dark Matter in Supergravity from Gravitational Waves

We explore the Gravitational Waves (GW) phenomenology of a simple class of supergravity models that can explain and unify inflation and Primordial Black Holes (PBH) as Dark Matter (DM). Our (modified) supergravity models naturally lead to a two-field attractor-type double inflation, whose first stage is driven by Starobinsky scalaron and the second stage is driven by another scalar belonging to a supergravity multiplet. The PBHs formation in our supergravity models is efficient, compatible with all observational constraints, and predicts a stochastic GW background. We compute the PBH-induced GW power spectrum and show that GW signals can be detected within the sensitivity curves of the future space-based GW interferometers such as LISA, DECIGO, TAIJI and TianQin projects, thus showing predictive power of supergravity in GW physics and their compatibility.

Primordial black hole dark matter in dilaton-extended two-field Starobinsky inflation

We investigate the production of primordial black holes and their contribution to the presently observed dark matter in a dilaton two-field extension of Starobinsky's quadratic $f(R)$ model of inflation. The model features a multi-field amplification mechanism which leads to the generation of a sharp peak in the inflationary power spectrum at small wavelengths responsible for the production of primordial black holes. This mechanism is significantly different from single-field models and requires a stochastic treatment during an intermediate phase of the inflationary dynamics. We find that the model leads to a successful phase of effective single-field Starobinsky inflation for wavelengths probed by the cosmic microwave background radiation and explains the observed cold dark matter content in the Universe by the formation of primordial black holes.

Primordial black holes from modified supergravity

The modified supergravity approach is applied to describe a formation of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) after Starobinsky inflation. Our approach naturally leads to the two-(scalar)-field attractor-type double inflation, whose first stage is driven by scalaron and whose second stage is driven by another scalar field which belongs to a supergravity multiplet. The scalar potential and the kinetic terms are derived, the vacua are studied, and the inflationary dynamics of those two scalars is investigated. We numerically compute the power spectra and we find the ultra-slow-roll regime leading to an enhancement (peak) in the scalar power spectrum. This leads to an efficient formation of PBHs. We estimate the masses of PBHs and we find their density fraction (as part of Dark Matter). We show that our modified supergravity models are in agreement with inflationary observables, while they predict the PBH masses in a range between $10^{16}$ g and $10^{20}$ g. In this sense, modified supergravity provides a natural top-down approach for explaining and unifying the origin of inflation and the PBHs Dark Matter.

Gravitino and Polonyi production in supergravity

We study production of gravitino and Polonyi particles in the minimal Starobinsky-Polonyi $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity with inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. Our model has only one free parameter given by the scale of spontaneous SUSY breaking triggered by Polonyi chiral superfield. The vector supermultiplet generically enters the action non-minimally, via an arbitrary real function. This functon is chosen to generate the inflaton scalar potential of the Starobinsky model. Our supergravity model can be reformulated as an abelian supersymmetric gauge theory with the vector gauge superfield coupled to two (Higgs and Polonyi) chiral superfields interacting with supergravity, where the $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. We find that Polonyi and gravitino particles are efficiently produced during inflation. After inflation, perturbative decay of inflaton also produces Polonyi particles that rapidly decay into gravitinos. As a result, a coherent picture of inflation and dark matter emerges, where the abundance of produced gravitinos after inflation fits the CMB constraints as a Super Heavy Dark Matter (SHDM) candidate. Our scenario avoids the notorous gravitino and Polonyi problems with the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) and DM overproduction.

Minimal Starobinsky supergravity coupled to dilaton-axion superfield

The minimal Starobinsky supergravity with the inflaton (scalaron) and the goldstino in a massive vector supermultiplet is coupled to the dilaton-axion chiral superfield with the no-scale Kähler potential and a superpotential. The Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi (KKLT)-type mechanism in the presence of a constant term in the superpotential is applied to stabilize the dilaton/axion during inflation, and it is shown to lead to an instability. The instability is cured by adding the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term that does not lead to the gauged $R$-symmetry. Other stabilization mechanisms, based on the Wess-Zumino (WZ)-type superpotential, are also studied in the presence of the FI term. A possible connection to a D3-brane is briefly discussed too.

Gravitino condensate in $N=1$ supergravity coupled to the $N=1$ supersymmetric Born-Infeld theory

The $N=1$ supersymmetric Born-Infeld theory coupled to $N=1$ supergravity in four spacetime dimensions is studied in the presence of a cosmological term with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. The consistency is achieved by compensating a negative contribution to the cosmological term from the Born-Infeld theory by a positive contribution originating from the gravitino condensate. This leads to an identification of the Born-Infeld scale with the supersymmetry breaking scale. The dynamical formation of the gravitino condensate in supergravity is reconsidered and the induced one-loop effective potential is derived. Slow roll cosmological inflation with the gravitino condensate as the inflaton (near the maximum of the effective potential) is viable against the Planck 2018 data and can lead to the inflationary (Hubble) scale as high as $10^{12}$ GeV. Uplifting the Minkowski vacuum (after inflation) to a de Sitter vacuum (dark energy) is possible by the use of the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Some major physical consequences of our scenario to reheating are briefly discussed also.

Inflation, Dark Energy and Dark Matter in Supergravity

The Dark Side of the Universe, which includes the cosmological inflation in the early Universe, the current dark energy and dark matter, can be theoretically described by supergravity, though it is non-trivial. We recall the arguments pro and contra supersymmetry and supergravity, and define the viable supergravity models describing the Dark Side of the Universe in agreement with all current observations. Our approach to inflation is based on the Starobinsky model, the dark energy is identified with the positive cosmological constant (de Sitter vacuum), and the dark matter particle is given by the lightest supersymmetric particle identified with the supermassive gravitino. The key role is played by spontaneous supersymmetry breaking.
