Study on charged strange stars in $f\left(R,\mathcal{T}\right)$ gravity

We investigate effects of the modified $f(R, \mathcal{T})$ gravity on the charged strange quark stars with the standard choice of $f(R, \mathcal{T})=R+2χ\mathcal{T}$. Those types of stars are supposed to be made of strange quark matter (SQM) whose distribution is governed by the phenomenological MIT bag EOS as $p=\frac{1}{3}(ρ-4B)$, where $B$ is the bag constant, while the form of charge distribution is chosen to be $q\left(r\right)=Q\left(r/R\right)^3=αr^3$ with $α$ as a constant. We derive the values of the unknown parameters by matching the interior spacetime to the exterior Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m metric followed by the appropriate choice of the values of the parameters $χ$ and $α$. Our study reveals that besides SQM, a new kind of matter distribution originates due to the interaction between the matter and the extra geometric term, while the modification of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation invokes the presence of a new force $F_c$. The accumulation of the electric charge distribution reaches its maximum at the surface, and the predicted values of the corresponding electric charge and electric field are of the order of $10^{19-20}$ C and $10^{21-22}$ V/cm, respectively. To examine the physical validity of our solutions, we perform several tests and find that the proposed $f(R, \mathcal{T})$ model survives all these critical tests. Therefore, our model can describe the non-singular charged strange stars and justify the supermassive compact stellar objects having their masses beyond the maximum mass limit for the compact stars in the standard scenario. Our model also supports the existence of several exotic astrophysical objects like super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs, massive pulsars, and even magnetars, which remain unexplained in the framework of General Relativity (GR).

Generalized dilaton-axion models of inflation, de Sitter vacua and spontaneous SUSY breaking in supergravity

We propose the unified models of cosmological inflation, spontaneous SUSY breaking, and the dark energy (de Sitter vacuum) in $N=1$ supergravity with the dilaton-axion chiral superfield $T$ in the presence of an $N=1$ vector multiplet with the alternative Fayet-Iliopoulos term. By using the Kähler potential as $K=-α\log(T+\bar{T})$ and the superpotential as a sum of a constant and a linear term, we find that viable inflation is possible for $3\leqα\leqα_{\rm max}$ where $α_{\rm max}\approx 7.235$. Observations of the amplitude of primordial scalar perturbations fix the SUSY breaking scale in our models as high as $10^{13}$ GeV. In the case of $α>3$ the axion gets the tree-level (non-tachyonic) mass comparable to the inflaton mass.

Exploring physical features of anisotropic strange stars beyond standard maximum mass limit in $f\left(R,\mathcal{T}\right)$ gravity

We study a specific model of anisotropic strange stars in the modified $f\left(R,\mathcal{T}\right)$-type gravity by deriving solutions to the modified Einstein field equations representing a spherically symmetric anisotropic stellar object. We take a standard assumption that $f(R,\mathcal{T})=R+2χ\mathcal{T}$, where $R$ is Ricci scalar, $\mathcal{T}$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of matter, and $χ$ is a coupling constant. To obtain our solution to the modified Einstein equations, we successfully apply the `embedding class 1' techniques. We also consider the case when the strange quark matter (SQM) distribution is governed by the simplified MIT bag model equation of state given by $p_r=\frac{1}{3}\left(ρ-4B\right)$, where $B$ is bag constant. We calculate the radius of the strange star candidates by directly solving the modified TOV equation with the observed values of the mass and some parametric values of $B$ and $χ$. The physical acceptability of our solutions is verified by performing several physical tests. Interestingly, besides the SQM, another type of matter distribution originates due to the effect of coupling between the matter and curvature terms in the $f\left(R,\mathcal{T}\right)$ gravity theory. Our study shows that with decreasing the value of $χ$, the stellar systems under investigations become gradually massive and larger in size, turning them into less dense compact objects. It also reveals that for $χ<0$ the $f\left(R,\mathcal{T}\right)$ gravity emerges as a suitable theory for explaining the observed massive stellar objects like massive pulsars, super-Chandrasekhar stars and magnetars, etc., which remain obscure in the standard framework of General Relativity (GR).

Polonyi-Starobinsky supergravity with inflaton in a massive vector multiplet with DBI and FI terms

We propose the Starobinsky-type inflationary model in the matter-coupled $N=1$ four-dimensional supergravity with the massive vector multiplet that has inflaton (scalaron) and goldstino amongst its field components, whose action includes the Dirac-Born-Infeld-type kinetic term and the generalized (new) Fayet-Iliopoulos-type term, without gauging the R-symmetry. The $N=1$ chiral matter ("hidden sector") is described by the modified Polonyi model needed for spontaneous supersymmetry breaking after inflation. We compute the bosonic action and the scalar potential of the model, and show that it can accommodate the positive (observed) cosmological constant (as the dark energy) and the spontaneous supersymmetry breaking at high scale after the Starobinsky inflation.

Modified Born-Infeld-dilaton-axion coupling in supersymmetry

We propose the supersymmetric extension of the modified Born-Infeld-axion-dilaton non-linear electrodynamics that has confined static abelian solutions used for describing the electromagnetic confinement in the presence of axion and dilaton fields, and charged matter. The supersymmetric extension also has the non-trivial scalar potential that implies the upper bounds on the matter fields.

Massive vector multiplet with Dirac-Born-Infeld and new Fayet-Iliopoulos terms in supergravity

We propose a four-dimensional N = 1 supergravity-based Starobinsky-type inflationary model in terms of a single massive vector multiplet, whose action includes the Dirac-Born-Infeld-type kinetic terms and a generalized (new) Fayet-Iliopolulos-type term without gauging the R-symmetry. The bosonic action and the scalar potential are computed. Inflaton is the superpartner of goldstino in our model, and supersymmetry is spontaneously broken after inflation by the D-type mechanism, whose scale is related to the value of the cosmological constant.

Beyond Starobinsky inflation

A supergravity extension of the $(R+R^2)$ gravity with the additional (Born-Infeld) structure of a massive vector multiplet gives rise to the specific $F(R)$ gravity, whose structure is investigated in detail. The massive vector multiplet has inflaton (scalaron), goldstino and a massive vector field as its field components. The model describes Starobinsky inflation and allows us to extrapolate the $F(R)$ function beyond the inflationary scale (up to Planck scale). We observe some differences versus the $(R+R^2)$ gravity, and several breaking patterns of the well known correspondence between the $F(R)$ gravity and the scalar-tensor gravity.

General couplings of a vector multiplet in N=1 supergravity with new FI terms

We propose new interactions of a (massive) vector multiplet with chiral multiplets and (D-type) spontaneously broken supersymmetry in four-dimensional N=1 supergravity, due to the generalized Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) terms. Our actions are invariant under linearly realized off-shell supersymmetry and Kaehler-Weyl transformations. We compute the scalar potentials and pinpoint some physical restrictions arising in this approach.

Removing instability of Polonyi-Starobinsky supergravity by adding FI term

Polonyi-Starobinsky (PS) supergravity is the N=1 supergravity model of Starobinsky inflation with spontaneous supersymmetry breaking (after inflation) due to Polonyi superfield, and inflaton belonging to a massive vector supermultiplet. The PS model is used for an explicit realization of the (super-heavy) gravitino dark matter scenario in cosmology. We find a potential instability in this model, and offer a mechanism for its removal by adding a Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term.

Inflation from higher dimensions

We derive the scalar potential in four spacetime dimensions from an eight-dimensional $(R+γR^4-2Λ-F_4^2)$ gravity model in the presence of the 4-form $F_4$, with the (modified gravity) coupling constant $γ$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$, by using the flux compactification of four extra dimensions on a 4-sphere with the warp factor. The scalar potential depends upon two scalar fields: the scalaron and the 4-sphere volume modulus. We demonstrate that it gives rise to a viable description of cosmological inflation in the early Universe, with the scalaron playing the role of inflaton and the volume modulus to be (almost) stabilized at its minimum. We also speculate about a possibility of embedding our model in eight dimensions into a modified eight-dimensional supergavity that, in its turn, arises from a modified eleven-dimensional supergravity.

SUSY breaking after inflation in supergravity with inflaton in a massive vector multiplet

We propose a limited class of models, describing interacting chiral multiplets with a non-minimal coupling to a vector multiplet, in curved superspace of $N=1$ supergravity. Those models are suitable for the inflationary model building in supergravity with inflaton assigned to a massive vector multiplet and spontaneous SUSY breaking in Minkowski vacuum after inflation, for any values of the inflationary parameters $n_s$ and $r$, and any scale of SUSY breaking.

No inflation in type IIA strings on rigid CY spaces

We investigate whether cosmological inflation is possible in a class of flux compactifications of type IIA strings on rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds, when all perturbative string corrections are taken into account. We confine ourselves to the universal hypermultiplet and an abelian vector multiplet, representing matter in four dimensions. Since all axions can be stabilized by D-instantons, we choose dilaton and a Kähler modulus as the only running scalars. Though positivity of their scalar potential can be achieved, we find that there is no slow roll ($\varepsilon > 2$ and $η>2$), and no Graceful Exit because the scalar potential has the run-away behaviour resulting in decompactification. We conclude that it is impossible to generate phenomenologically viable inflation in the given class of flux compactifications of type IIA strings, without explicit breaking of $N=2$ local supersymmetry of the low-energy effective action.

Higgs mechanism and cosmological constant in $N=1$ supergravity with inflaton in a vector multiplet

The $N=1$ supergravity models of cosmological inflation with inflaton belonging to a massive vector multiplet and spontaneous SUSY breaking after inflation are reformulated as the supersymmetric $U(1)$ gauge theories of a massless vector superfield interacting with the Higgs and Polonyi chiral superfields, all coupled to supergravity. The $U(1)$ gauge sector is identified with the $U(1)$ gauge fields of the super-GUT coupled to supergravity, whose gauge group has a $U(1)$ factor. A positive cosmological constant (dark energy) is included. The scalar potential is calculated, and its de Sitter vacuum solution is found to be stable.

Inflation from $(R+γR^n-2Λ)$ Gravity in Higher Dimensions

We propose a derivation of the inflaton scalar potential from the higher $(D)$ dimensional $(R+γR^n-2Λ)$ gravity, with the new coupling constant $γ$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$. We assume that a compactification of extra dimensions happened before inflation, so that the inflaton scalar potential in four spacetime dimensions appears to be dependent upon the parameters $(γ,Λ,D,n)$. We find that consistency requires $n=D/2$, while the dimension $D$ has to be a multiple of four. We calculate the potential for any $D$, and determine the values of $γ$ and $Λ$ from observations. The cases of $D=8$ and $D=12$ are considered in more detail. Our approach results in the viable models of chaotic large-field inflation, and leads to the sharp predictions of an observable value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.

Energy conditions in Starobinsky supergravity

We consider the classical energy conditions (strong, null and weak) in Starobinsky supergravity theories. We study in detail the simplest Starobinsky supergravity model in the "old-minimal" supergravity setup and find examples of violations of each energy condition for a certain range of the parameters due to extra scalar d.o.f. present in supergravity. We find the null and weak energy conditions to be preserved and the strong energy condition to be violated in the physically relevant examples such as inflation and dark energy.

Non-perturbative scalar potential inspired by type IIA strings on rigid CY

Motivated by a class of flux compactifications of type IIA strings on rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds, preserving N=2 local supersymmetry in four dimensions, we derive a non-perturbative potential of all scalar fields from the exact D-instanton corrected metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space. Applying this potential to moduli stabilization, we find a discrete set of exact vacua for axions. At these critical points, the stability problem is decoupled into two subspaces spanned by the axions and the other fields (dilaton and Kahler moduli), respectively. Whereas the stability of the axions is easily achieved, numerical analysis shows instabilities in the second subspace.

On SUSY Restoration in Single-Superfield Inflationary Models of Supergravity

We study the conditions of restoring supersymmetry (SUSY) after inflation in the supergravity-based cosmological models with a single chiral superfield and a quartic stabilization term in the Kähler potential. Some new, explicit, and viable inflationary models satisfying those conditions are found. The inflaton's scalar superpartner is dynamically stabilized during and after inflation. We also demonstrate a possibility of having small and adjustable SUSY breaking with a tiny cosmological constant.
