Starobinsky-like two-field inflation

We consider an extension of the Starobinsky model, whose parameters are functions of an extra scalar field. Our motivation is to test the robustness (or sensitivity) of the Starobinsky inflation against mixing scalaron with another (matter) scalar field. We find that the extended Starobinsky model is (classically) equivalent to the two-field inflation, with the scalar potential having a flat direction. For the sake of fully explicit calculations, we perform a numerical scan of the parameter space. Our numerical calculations support the viability of the Starobinsky-like two-field inflation for the certain range of its parameters, which are characterized by the scalar index $n_s=0.96\pm 0.01$, the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r<0.06$, and small running of the scalar index at $|α_s|<0.05$.

Single-Superfield Helical-Phase Inflation

Large-field inflation in supergravity requires the approximate global symmetry needed to protect flatness of the scalar potential. In helical-phase inflation, the U(1) symmetry of the Kahler potential is assumed, the phase part of the complex scalar of a chiral superfield plays the role of inflaton, and the radial part is strongly stabilized. The original model of helical phase inflation, proposed by Li, Li and Nanopoulos (LLN), employs an extra (stabilizer) superfield. We propose a more economical new class of the helical phase inflationary models without a stabilizer superfield. As the specific examples, the quadratic, the natural, and the Starobinsky-type inflationary models are studied in our approach.

On the Higgs-like Quintessence for Dark Energy

We propose a dynamical (quintessence) model of dark energy in the current universe with a renormalizable (Higgs-like) scalar potential. We prove the viability of our model (after fine tuning) for the certain range of the average scalar curvature values, and study the cosmological signatures distinguishing our model from the standard description of dark energy in terms of a cosmological constant.

Generic Scalar Potentials for Inflation in Supergravity with a Single Chiral Superfield

We propose a large class of supergravity models in terms of a single chiral matter superfield, leading to (almost) arbitrary single-field inflationary scalar potentials similar to the F-term in rigid supersymmetry. Those scalar potentials are positively semi-definite (in our approximation), and can preserve supersymmetry at the end of inflation. The only scalar superpartner of inflaton is stabilized by a higher-dimensional term in the Kahler potential. We argue that couplings of the inflaton to other sectors of the particle spectrum do not affect the inflationary dynamics, and briefly discuss reheating of the universe by the inflaton decays.

The f(R) Gravity Function of the Linde Quintessence

We calculate the f(R) gravity function in the dual gravity description of the quintessence model with a quadratic (Linde) scalar potential and a positive cosmological constant. We find that in the large curvature regime relevant to chaotic inflation in early Universe, the dual f(R) gravity is well approximated by the (matter) loop-corrected Starobinsky inflationary model. In the small curvature regime relevant to dark energy in the present Universe, the f(R) gravity function reduces to the Einstein-Hilbert one with a positive cosmological constant.

Natural Inflation and Universal Hypermultiplet

A novel framework is proposed for embedding the natural inflation into the type IIA superstrings compactified on a Calabi-Yau (CY) three-fold. Inflaton is identified with axion of the Universal Hypermultiplet (UH). The other UH scalars (including dilaton) are stabilized by the CY fluxes whose impact can be described by gauging of the abelian isometry associated with the axion, when the NS5-brane instanton contributions are suppressed. Then the stabilizing scalar potential is controlled by the integrable three-dimensional Toda equation, and leads to spontaneous N=2 SUSY breaking. The inflationary scalar potential of the UH axion is dynamically generated at a lower scale in the natural inflation via the non-perturbative quantum field effects such as gaugino condensation. The natural inflation has two scales that allow any values of the CMB observables $(n_s,r)$.

Inflation in Supergravity with a Single Chiral Superfield

We propose new supergravity models describing chaotic Linde- and Starobinsky-like inflation in terms of a single chiral superfield. The key ideas to obtain a positive vacuum energy during large field inflation are (i) stabilization of the real or imaginary partner of the inflaton by modifying a Kahler potential, and (ii) use of the crossing terms in the scalar potential originating from a polynomial superpotential. Our inflationary models are constructed by starting from the minimal Kahler potential with a shift symmetry, and are extended to the no-scale case. Our methods can be applied to more general inflationary models in supergravity with only one chiral superfield.

Starobinsky Model in N=2 Supergravity

The Starobinsky inflationary model of $(R+R^2)$ gravity is extended to the new-minimal (40+40) off-shell 4D, N=2 supergravity in N=2 chiral (curved) superspace. In its dual formulation, as a matter-coupled N=2 Einstein supergravity, inflaton belongs to a massive N=2 vector multiplet.

Old-minimal supergravity models of inflation

We study three types of the old-minimal higher-derivative supergravity theories extending the $f(R)$ gravity, towards their use for the inflationary model building in supergravity, by using both superfields and their field components. In the curved superspace all those theories are described in terms of a single chiral scalar curvature superfeld $\mathcal{R}$. Each of those theories can be dualized into a matter-coupled supergravity without higher derivatives. The first type is parametrized by a single non-holomorphic potential $N(\mathcal{R},\bar{\mathcal{R}})$, and gives rise to the dual matter-coupled supergravities with two dynamical chiral matter superfields having a no-scale Kähler potential. We find that a generic potential $N(\mathcal{R},\bar{\mathcal{R}})$ generates both the $(R+R^2)$ gravity and the non-minimal coupling of the propagating complex scalar field to the $R$, needed for the Starobinsky and Higgs inflation, respectively. We find the general conditions for the Starobinsky inflation and compute the inflaton mass. The second type is given by the chiral supergravity actions whose superfield Lagrangian $F(\mathcal{R},Σ({\bar{\mathcal R}}))$ also depends upon the chiral projection $Σ$ of the anti-chiral superfield ${\bar{\mathcal R}}$. We find that the actions of the second type always give rise to ghosts. We also revisit the $F(\mathcal{R})$ supergravity actions of the third type (without the $Σ$-dependence) with the reduced number of the extra physical degrees of freedom, comprising a single chiral matter superfeld with a no-scale Kähler potential. We confirm that the pure $F(\mathcal{R})$ supergravity is insufficient for realization of the Starobinsky inflation, though by the reason different from those proposed in the recent literature.

On the supersymmetrization of inflation in f(R) gravity

An N=1 Poincare supergravity action, suitable for describing the Starobinsky inflation, is proposed. It extends f(R) gravity to supergravity in its old-minimal version. The action is parametrized by a single holomorphic potential and a single non-holomorphic potential, and can be dualized into the standard matter-coupled supergravity action, with the "matter" given by two chiral superfields. The action extends the earlier proposals for embedding the Starobinsky inflation into supergravity, and can be further generalized to include quantum corrections to the inflation. Our approach assumes the gravitational origin of inflaton and quintessence in the context of supergravity, by using a single chiral scalar curvature superfield.

New Actions for Modified Gravity and Supergravity

We extend the f(R) gravity action by including a generic dependence upon the Weyl tensor, and further generalize it to supergravity by using the super-curvature (R) and super-Weyl (W) chiral superfields in N=1 chiral curved superspace. We argue that our (super)gravitational actions are the meaningful extensions of the phenomenological f(R) gravity and its locally supersymmetric generalization towards their UV completion and their embedding into superstring theories. The proposed actions can be used for study of cosmological perturbations and gravitational instabilities due to a nonvanishing Weyl tensor in gravity and supergravity.

Modified Supergravity and Early Universe: the Meeting Point of Cosmology and High-Energy Physics

We review the new theory of modified supergravity, dubbed F(\cal R) supergravity, and some of its recent applications to inflation and reheating in the early universe cosmology. The F(\cal R) supergravity is the N=1 locally supersymmetric extension of the f(R) gravity in four space-time dimensions. A manifestly supersymmetric formulation of the F(\cal R) supergravity exist in terms of N=1 superfields, by using the (old) minimal Poincar'e supergravity in curved superspace. We find the conditions for stability, the absence of ghosts and tachyons. Three models of the F(\cal R) supergravity are studied. The first example is devoted to a recovery of the standard (pure) N=1 supergravity with a negative cosmological constant from the F(\cal R) supergravity. As the second example, a generic {\cal R}^2-type supergravity is investigated, and the existence of the AdS bound on the scalar curvature is found. As the third (and most important) example, a simple viable realization of chaotic inflation in supergravity is found. Our approach is {\it minimalistic} since it does not introduce new exotic fields or new interactions, beyond those already present in (super)gravity. The universal reheating mechanism is automatic. We establish the consistency of our approach and also apply it to preheating and reheating after inflation. The Higgs inflation and its correspondence to the Starobinsky inflation is established in the context of supergravity. We briefly review other relevant issues such as non-Gaussianity, CP-violation, origin of baryonic asymmetry, lepto- and baryo-genesis. The F(\cal R) supergravity has promise for possible solutions to those outstanding problems too.

Inflation and non-minimal scalar-curvature coupling in gravity and supergravity

Inflationary slow-roll dynamics in Einstein gravity with a non-minimal scalar-curvature coupling can be equivalent to that in the certain f(R) gravity theory. We review the correspondence and extend it to N=1 supergravity. The non-minimal coupling in supergravity is rewritten in terms of the standard (`minimal') N=1 matter-coupled supergravity by using curved superspace. The established equivalence between two different inflationary theories means the same inflaton scalar potential, and does not imply the same post-inflationary dynamics and reheating.

Dark Energy in Modified Supergravity

We propose a supersymmetric extension of the dynamical dark energy function and the corresponding scalar (super)potential in F(R) supergravity. Our model is viable in the Einstein approximation, and also has an analytic (regular) Wess-Zumino-type scalar superpotential. The hidden sector responsible for spontaneous supersymmetry breaking is given.

Consistency of inflation and preheating in F(R) supergravity

We study inflation and preheating in F(R) supergravity characterized by two mass scales of a scalar degree of freedom (scalaron): M (associated with the inflationary era) and m (associated with the preheating era). The allowed values of the masses M and m are derived from the amplitude of the CMB temperature anisotropies. We show that our model is consistent with the joint observational constraints of WMAP and other measurements in the regime where a sufficient amount of inflation (with the number of e-foldings larger than 50) is realized. In the low-energy regime relevant to preheating, we derive the effective scalar potential in the presence of a pseudo-scalar field chi coupled to the inflaton (scalaron) field phi. If m is much larger than M, we find that there exists the preheating stage in which the field perturbations delta chi and delta phi rapidly grow by a broad parametric resonance.

Cosmological constant in F(R) supergravity

A cosmological constant in the regime of low space-time curvature is calculated in the recently proposed version of F(R) supergravity with a generic cubic function F. The F(R) supergravity is the N=1 supersymmetric extension of f(R) gravity. The cubic model is known to successfully describe a chaotic (slow-roll) inflation in the regime of high space-time curvature. We find that a simple extension of the same model allows a positive cosmological constant in the regime of low space-time curvature. The inflaton superfield in F(R) supergravity (like inflaton in f(R) gravity) violates the Strong Energy Condition and thus breaks the restriction of the standard supergravity (with usual matter) that can only have either a negative or vanishing cosmological constant.

Embedding (R+R^2)-Inflation into Supergravity

We find the natural embedding of the (R+R^2)-inflationary model into the recently constructed N=1 F(\cal R)-supergravity. It gives a simple and viable realization of chaotic inflation in supergravity. The only requirement for a slow-roll inflation is the existence of the (\cal R)^3-term with an anomalously large coefficient in Taylor expansion of the F(\cal R) function, where \cal R is the covariantly-chiral scalar supercurvature superfield.
