Comments on the Mirror TBA

We discuss various aspects of excited state TBA equations describing the energy spectrum of the AdS_5 \times S^5 strings and, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, the spectrum of scaling dimensions of N = 4 SYM local operators. We observe that auxiliary roots which are used to partially enumerate solutions of the Bethe-Yang equations do not play any role in engineering excited state TBA equations via the contour deformation trick. We further argue that the TBA equations are in fact written not for a particular string state but for the whole superconformal multiplet, and, therefore, the psu(2,2|4) invariance is built in into the TBA construction.

Konishi operator at intermediate coupling

TBA equations for two-particle states from the sl(2) sector proposed by Arutyunov, Suzuki and the author are solved numerically for the Konishi operator descendent up to 't Hooft's coupling lambda ~ 2046. The data obtained is used to analyze the properties of Y-functions and address the issue of the existence of the critical values of the coupling. In addition we find a new integral representation for the BES dressing phase which substantially reduces the computational time.

Exploring the mirror TBA

We apply the contour deformation trick to the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the AdS_5 \times S^5 mirror model, and obtain the integral equations determining the energy of two-particle excited states dual to N=4 SYM operators from the sl(2) sector. We show that each state/operator is described by its own set of TBA equations. Moreover, we provide evidence that for each state there are infinitely-many critical values of 't Hooft coupling constant λ, and the excited states integral equations have to be modified each time one crosses one of those. In particular, estimation based on the large L asymptotic solution gives λ\approx 774 for the first critical value corresponding to the Konishi operator. Our results indicate that the related calculations and conclusions of Gromov, Kazakov and Vieira should be interpreted with caution. The phenomenon we discuss might potentially explain the mismatch between their recent computation of the scaling dimension of the Konishi operator and the one done by Roiban and Tseytlin by using the string theory sigma model.

Five-loop Konishi from the Mirror TBA

We use the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the AdS_5 \times S^5 mirror model to derive the five-loop anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator. We show numerically that the corresponding result perfectly agrees with the one recently obtained via the generalized Luscher formulae. This constitutes an important test of the AdS/CFT TBA system.

The Dressing Factor and Crossing Equations

We utilize the DHM integral representation for the BES dressing factor of the world-sheet S-matrix of the AdS_5xS^5 light-cone string theory, and the crossing equations to fix the principal branch of the dressing factor on the rapidity torus. The results obtained are further used, in conjunction with the fusion procedure, to determine the bound state dressing factor of the mirror theory. We convincingly demonstrate that the mirror bound state S-matrix found in this way does not depend on the internal structure of a bound state solution employed in the fusion procedure. This welcome feature is in perfect parallel to string theory, where the corresponding bound state S-matrix has no bearing on bound state constituent particles as well. The mirror bound state S-matrix we found provides the final missing piece in setting up the TBA equations for the AdS_5xS^5 mirror theory.

Simplified TBA equations of the AdS_5 x S^5 mirror model

We use the recently found integral representation for the dressing phase in the kinematic region of the mirror theory to simplify the TBA equations for the AdS_5 x S^5 mirror model. The resulting set of equations provides an efficient starting point for both analytic and numerical studies.

Temperature quantization from the TBA equations

We analyze the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the mirror model which determine the ground state energy of the light-cone AdS_5 x S^5 superstring living on a cylinder. The light-cone momentum of string is equal to the circumference of the cylinder, and is identified with the inverse temperature of the mirror model. We show that the natural requirement of the analyticity of the Y-functions leads to the quantization of the temperature of the mirror model which has never been observed in any other models.

Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz for the AdS_5 x S^5 Mirror Model

We use the string hypothesis for the mirror theory to derive the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for the AdS_5 x S^5 mirror model. We further demonstrate how these equations can be used to construct the associated Y-system recently discussed in the literature, putting particular emphasis on the assumptions and the range of validity of the corresponding construction.

Foundations of the AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring. Part I

We review the recent advances towards finding the spectrum of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring. We thoroughly explain the theoretical techniques which should be useful for the ultimate solution of the spectral problem. In certain cases our exposition is original and cannot be found in the existing literature. The present Part I deals with foundations of classical string theory in AdS_5 x S^5, light-cone perturbative quantization and derivation of the exact light-cone world-sheet scattering matrix.

String hypothesis for the AdS_5 x S^5 mirror

We discuss the states which contribute in the thermodynamic limit of the mirror theory, the latter is obtained from the light-cone gauge-fixed string theory in the AdS_5 x S^5 background by the double-Wick rotation. We analyze the Bethe-Yang equations for the mirror theory and formulate the string hypothesis. We show that in the thermodynamic limit solutions of the Bethe-Yang equations arrange themselves into Bethe string configurations similar to the ones appearing in the Hubbard model. We also derive a set of equations describing the bound states and the Bethe string configurations of the mirror theory.

Superstrings on AdS_4 x CP^3 as a Coset Sigma-model

According to the recent proposal by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena the N=6 supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions has a 't Hooft limit whose holographic dual is described by type IIA superstings on AdS_4 x CP^3 background. We argue that the Green-Schwarz action for type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 with kappa-symmetry partially fixed can be understood as a coset sigma-model on the same space supplied with a proper Wess-Zumino term. We construct the corresponding sigma-model Lagrangian and show that it is invariant under a local fermionic symmetry which for generic bosonic string configurations allows one to remove 8 out of 24 fermionic degrees of freedom. The remaining 16 fermions together with their bosonic partners should describe the physical content of AdS_4 x CP^3 superstring. As further evidence, we demonstrate that in the plane-wave limit the quadratic action arising from our model reproduces the one emerging from the type IIA superstring. The coset sigma-model is classically integrable which opens up the possibility to investigate its dynamics in a way very similar to the case of AdS_5 x S^5 superstrings.

Giant magnons in TsT-transformed AdS_5 x S^5

We consider giant magnons propagating in a γ-deformed AdS_5 x S^5 background obtained from AdS_5 x S^5 by means of a chain of TsT transformations. We point out that in the light-cone gauge and in the infinite J limit the deformed and undeformed string models share the same magnon dispersion relation, the \su(2|2)\oplus \su(2|2)-invariant world-sheet S-matrix and the dressing factor. The γ-dependence in the limit is only due to different level-matching conditions. We consider the reduction of the deformed model to R x S^3 and determine the leading γ-dependence of the dispersion relation for a finite J giant magnon.

The S-matrix of String Bound States

We find the S-matrix which describes the scattering of two-particle bound states of the light-cone string sigma model on AdS5xS5. We realize the M-particle bound state representation of the centrally extended su(2|2) algebra on the space of homogeneous (super)symmetric polynomials of degree M depending on two bosonic and two fermionic variables. The scattering matrix S^{MN} of M- and N-particle bound states is a differential operator of degree M+N acting on the product of the corresponding polynomials. We require this operator to obey the invariance condition and the Yang-Baxter equation, and we determine it for the two cases M=1,N=2 and M=N=2. We show that the S-matrices found satisfy generalized physical unitarity, CPT invariance, parity transformation rule and crossing symmetry. Although the dressing factor as a function of four parameters x_1^+,x_1^-,x_2^+,x_2^- is universal for scattering of any bound states, it obeys a crossing symmetry equation which depends on M and N.

On String S-matrix, Bound States and TBA

The study of finite J effects for the light-cone AdS superstring by means of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz requires an understanding of a companion 2d theory which we call the mirror model. It is obtained from the original string model by the double Wick rotation. The S-matrices describing the scattering of physical excitations in the string and mirror models are related to each other by an analytic continuation. We show that the unitarity requirement for the mirror S-matrix fixes the S-matrices of both theories essentially uniquely. The resulting string S-matrix S(z_1,z_2) satisfies the generalized unitarity condition and, up to a scalar factor, is a meromorphic function on the elliptic curve associated to each variable z. The double Wick rotation is then accomplished by shifting the variables z by quarter of the imaginary period of the torus. We discuss the apparent bound states of the string and mirror models, and show that depending on a choice of the physical region there are one, two or 2^{M-1} solutions of the M-particle bound state equations sharing the same conserved charges. For very large but finite values of J, most of these solutions, however, exhibit various signs of pathological behavior. In particular, they might receive a finite J correction to their energy which is complex, or the energy correction might exceed corrections arising due to finite J modifications of the Bethe equations thus making the asymptotic Bethe ansatz inapplicable.

The Zamolodchikov-Faddeev Algebra for AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring

We discuss the Zamolodchikov-Faddeev algebra for the superstring sigma-model on AdS_5 x S^5. We find the canonical su(2|2)^2 invariant S-matrix satisfying the standard Yang-Baxter and crossing symmetry equations. Its near-plane-wave expansion matches exactly the leading order term recently obtained by the direct perturbative computation. We also show that the S-matrix obtained by Beisert in the gauge theory framework does not satisfy the standard Yang-Baxter equation, and, as a consequence, the corresponding ZF algebra is twisted. The S-matrices in gauge and string theories however are physically equivalent and related by a non-local transformation of the basis states which is explicitly constructed.

The Off-shell Symmetry Algebra of the Light-cone AdS_5 x S^5 Superstring

We analyze the psu(2,2|4) supersymmetry algebra of a superstring propagating in the AdS_5 x S^5 background in the uniform light-cone gauge. We consider the off-shell theory by relaxing the level-matching condition and take the limit of infinite light-cone momentum, which decompactifies the string world-sheet. We focus on the psu(2|2)+psu(2|2) subalgebra which leaves the light-cone Hamiltonian invariant and show that it undergoes extension by a central element which is expressed in terms of the level-matching operator. This result is in agreement with the conjectured symmetry algebra of the dynamic S-matrix in the dual N=4 gauge theory.

Finite-size Effects from Giant Magnons

In order to analyze finite-size effects for the gauge-fixed string sigma model on AdS_5 x S^5, we construct one-soliton solutions carrying finite angular momentum J. In the infinite J limit the solutions reduce to the recently constructed one-magnon configuration of Hofman and Maldacena. The solutions do not satisfy the level-matching condition and hence exhibit a dependence on the gauge choice, which however disappears as the size J is taken to infinity. Interestingly, the solutions do not conserve all the global charges of the psu(2,2|4) algebra of the sigma model, implying that the symmetry algebra of the gauge-fixed string sigma model is different from psu(2,2|4) for finite J, once one gives up the level-matching condition. The magnon dispersion relation exhibits exponential corrections with respect to the infinite J solution. We also find a generalisation of our one-magnon configuration to a solution carrying two charges on the sphere. We comment on the possible implications of our findings for the existence of the Bethe ansatz describing the spectrum of strings carrying finite charges.

The AdS5xS5 Superstring in Light-Cone Gauge and its Bethe Equations

We use the uniform light-cone gauge to derive an exact gauge-fixed Lagrangian and light-cone Hamiltonian for the Green-Schwarz superstring in AdS5xS5. We then quantize the theory perturbatively in the near plane-wave limit, and compute the leading 1/J correction to a generic string state from the rank-1 subsectors. These investigations enable us to propose a new set of light-cone Bethe equations for the quantum string. The equations have a simple form and yield the correct spinning string and flat space limits. Finally, we clarify the notion of closed sectors in string theory by proving the existence of perturbative effective string Hamiltonians which are direct analogues of (all loop) dilatation operators in the dual N=4 gauge theory.
