Direct calculation of the critical Casimir force in a binary fluid

We show that critical Casimir effects can be accessed through direct simulation of a model binary fluid passing through the demixing transition. We work in the semi grand canonical ensemble, in slab geometry, in which the Casimir force appears as the excess of the generalized pressure, $P_{\bot}-nμ$. The excesses of the perpendicular pressure, $P_{\bot}$, and of $nμ$, are individually of much larger amplitude. A critical pressure anisotropy is observed between forces parallel and perpendicular to the confinement direction, which collapses onto a universal scaling function closely related to that of the critical Casimir force.

Fluctuations in an aging system: absence of effective temperature in the sol-gel transition of a quenched gelatin sample

We study the fluctuations of a Brownian micro particle trapped with optical tweezers in a gelatin solution undergoing a fast local temperature quench below the sol-gel transition. Contrary to what was previously reported, we observe no anomalous fluctuations in the particle's position that could be interpreted in terms of an effective temperature. A careful analysis with ensemble averages shows only equilibrium-like properties for the fluctuations, even though the system is clearly aging. We also provide a detailed discussion on possible artifacts that could have been interpreted as an effective temperature, such as the presence of a drift or a mixing in time and ensemble averages in data analysis. These considerations are of general interest when dealing with non-ergodic or non-stationary systems.

On the transient Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem after a quench at a critical point

The Modified Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (MFDT) proposed by G. Verley et al. {\it (EPL 93, 10002, (2011))} for non equilibrium transient states is experimentally studied. We apply MFDT to the transient relaxation dynamics of the director of a liquid crystal after a quench close to the critical point of the Fréedericksz transition (Ftr), which has several properties of a second order phase transition driven by an electric field. Although the standard Fluctuation Dissipation Theorem (FDT) is not satisfied, because the system is strongly out of equilibrium, the MFDT is perfectly verified during the transient in a system which is only partially described by Landau-Ginzburg (LG) equation, to which our observation are compared. The results can be useful in the study of material aging.

Energy flow between two hydrodynamically coupled particles kept at different effective temperatures

We measure the energy exchanged between two hydrodynamically coupled micron-sized Brownian particles trapped in water by two optical tweezers. The system is driven out of equilibrium by random forcing the position of one of the two particles. The forced particle behaves as it has an "effective temperature" higher than that of the other bead. This driving modifies the equilibrium variances and cross-correlation functions of the bead positions: we measure an energy flow between the particles and an instantaneous cross-correlation, proportional to the effective temperature difference between the two particles. A model of the interaction which is based on classical hydrodynamic coupling tensors is proposed. The theoretical and experimental results are in excellent agreement.

Fluctuation theorem between non-equilibrium states in an RC circuit

Fluctuation theorems impose constraints on the probability of observing negative entropy production in small systems driven out of equilibrium. The range of validity of fluctuation theorems has been extensively tested for transitions between equilibrium and non equilibrium stationary states, but not between general non equilibrium states. Here we report an experimental verification of the detailed fluctuation theorem for the total amount of entropy produced in the isothermal transition between two non-equilibrium states. The experimental setup is a parallel $RC$ circuit driven by an alternating current. We investigate the statistics of the heat released, of the variation of the entropy of the system, and of the entropy produced for processes of different durations. We show that the fluctuation theorem is satisfied with high accuracy for current drivings at different frequencies and different amplitudes.

Simultaneous and accurate measurement of the dielectric constant at many frequencies spanning a wide range

We present an innovative technique which allows the simultaneous measurement of the dielectric constant of a material at many frequencies, spanning a four orders of magnitude range chosen between 10 --2 Hz and 10 4 Hz. The sensitivity and accuracy are comparable to those obtained using standard single frequency techniques. The technique is based on three new and simple features: a) the precise real time correction of the amplication of a current amplier; b) the specic shape of the excitation signal and its frequency spectrum; and c) the precise synchronization between the generation of the excitation signal and the acquisition of the dielectric response signal. This technique is useful in the case of relatively fast dynamical measurements when the knowledge of the time evolution of the dielectric constant is needed.

Information and thermodynamics: Experimental verification of Landauer's erasure principle

We present an experiment in which a one-bit memory is constructed, using a system of a single colloidal particle trapped in a modulated double-well potential. We measure the amount of heat dissipated to erase a bit and we establish that in the limit of long erasure cycles the mean dissipated heat saturates at the Landauer bound, i.e. the minimal quantity of heat necessarily produced to delete a classical bit of information. This result demonstrates the intimate link between information theory and thermodynamics. To stress this connection we also show that a detailed Jarzynski equality is verified, retrieving the Landauer's bound independently of the work done on the system. The experimental details are presented and the experimental errors carefully discussed

Phase transition oscillations induced by a strongly focused laser beam

We report here the observation of a surprising phenomenon consisting in a oscillating phase transition which appears in a binary mixture, PMMA/3-octanone, when this is enlightened by a strongly focused infrared laser beam. PMMA/3-octanone has a UCST (Upper Critical Solution Temperature) which presents a critical point at temperature Tc = 306.6 K and volume fraction $ϕ$c = 12.8 % [Crauste et al., ArXiv 1310.6720, 2012]. This oscillatory phenomenon appears because of thermophoretic and electrostriction effects and non-linear diffusion. We analyze these oscillations and we propose a simple model which includes the minimal ingredients to produce the oscillatory behavior. Phase transitions in binary mixtures are still a widely studied subject, specifically near the critical point where several interesting and not completely understood phenomena may appear, among them we recall the critical Casimir forces [2],[3], confinement effects [4], [5] and out-of-equilibrium dynamics after a quench. The perturbation of the binary mixtures by mean of external fields is also an important and recent field of investigation [6]. For example, a laser can induce interesting phenomena in demixing binary mixtures because the radiation pressure can deform the interface between the two phases and it can be used to measure the interface tension [7]. Depending on the nature of the binary mixtures, laser illumination can also lead to a mixing or demixing transition. In ref.[8], focused infrared laser light heats the medium initially in the homogeneous phase and causes a separation in the LCST (Low Critical Solution Temperature) system. The radiation pressure gradients in a laser beam also contribute in the aggregation of polymers , thus producing a phase transition. The local heating may induce thermophoretic forces which attract towards the laser beam one of the binary-mixture components [9]. Other forces like electrostriction can also be involved [10]. In this letter, we report a new phenomenon, which consists in an oscillating phase transition induced by a constant illumination from an infrared laser beam in the heterogeneous region of an UCST (Upper Critical Solution Temperature) binary mixture. Oscillation phenomena in phase transition have already been reported in slow cooling UCST [11],[12] but as far as we know, never induced by a stationary laser illumination. After describing our experimental setup , we will present the results. Then we will use a very simplified model which contains the main necessary physical ingredients to induce this oscillation phenomenon.

Detailed Jarzynski Equality applied on a Logically Irreversible Procedure

A single bit memory system is made with a brownian particle held by an optical tweezer in a double-well potential and the work necessary to erase the memory is measured. We show that the minimum of this work is close to the Landauer's bound only for very slow erasure procedure. Instead a detailed Jarzynski equality allows us to retrieve the Landauer's bound independently on the speed of this erasure procedure. For the two separated subprocesses, i.e. the transition from state 1 to state 0 and the transition from state 0 to state 0, the Jarzynski equality does not hold but the generalized version links the work done on the system to the probability that it returns to its initial state under the time-reversed procedure.

Dynamics of a Liquid Crystal close to the Fréedericksz transition

We report experimental and numerical evidences that the dynamics of the director of a liquid crystal driven by an electric field close to the critical point of the Fréedericksz Transition(FT) is not described by a Landau-Ginzburg (LG) equation as it is usually done in literature. The reasons are related to the very crude approximations done to obtain this equation, to the finite value of the anchoring energy and to small asymmetries on boundary conditions. We also discuss the difference between the use of LG equation for the statics and the dynamics. These results are useful in all cases where FT is used as an example for other orientational transitions.

Statistical properties of the energy exchanged between two heat baths coupled by thermal fluctuations

We study both experimentally and theoretically the statistical properties of the energy exchanged between two electrical conductors, kept at different temperature by two different heat reservoirs, and coupled by the electric thermal noise. Such a system is ruled by the same equations as two Brownian particles kept at different temperatures and coupled by an elastic force. We measure the heat flowing between the two reservoirs, the thermodynamic work done by one part of the system on the other, and we show that these quantities exhibit a long time fluctuation theorem. Furthermore, we evaluate the fluctuating entropy, which satisfies a conservation law. These experimental results are fully justified by the theoretically analysis. Our results give more insight into the energy transfer in the famous Feymann ratchet widely studied theoretically but never in an experiment.

Microrheology measurements with a hanging-fiber AFM probe

A method to measure the viscosity of liquids at microscales is presented. It uses a thin glass fiber fixed on the tip of the cantilever of an extremely low noise Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), which accurately measures the cantilever {deflection}. When the fiber is dipped into the liquid the dissipation of the cantilever-fiber system increases. This dissipation, linked to the liquid viscosity, is computed from the power spectral density of the thermal fluctuations of the cantilever {deflection}. The {high sensitivity of the AFM} allows us to show the existence and to develop a model of the coupling between the dynamics of the fiber and that of the cantilever. This model {accurately} fits the experimental data. The advantages and draw-backs of the method are discussed

Characterization of PMMA--3-octanone binary by turbidity and light scattering measurements

We measure the coexistence curve and the critical point properties of a binary mixture composed by polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) at $M_w = 55900$ g/mol with 3- octanone. This binary mixture which has a demixing transition with an upper critical solution temperature $T_c$ has indeed interesting properties which may be useful for several application : a) its correlation length is larger than that of a liquid-liquid binary mixture, b) it is less viscous than a polymer blend; c) 3- octanone has an evaporation rate much smaller than other solvents. The mixture is first characterized by turbidity, to get the demixing temperature for different volumic fraction of PMMA. The coordinates of the critical point are obtained: $ϕ_c = 12.8\pm0.2$ % and $T_c = 306.5\pm0.1$ K. The correlation length $ξ$ near the critical point is then measured in a solution with a 12.8% volumic fraction of PMMA using static light scattering. Using the fact that PMMA-octanone mixture has scaling exponents compatible with Ising 3D, we determine more precisely the critical temperature $T_c = 306.58\pm0.04$ K and we find that $ξ\simeq ξ_0 [(T-T_c)/{T_c}]^{-0.63}$ with $ξ_0 = 0.97\pm 0.02$ nm. The discrepancy between this value and that extrapolated from other measurements based on turbidity is discussed.

New method of determination of the Fréedericksz threshold based upon precise fluctuation measurement

In this paper we report a new method for determining the critical threshold of the Fréedericksz transition driven by an electric field. It is based on the measurement of the amplitude of the molecule fluctuations as a function of the voltage difference applied to a planar nematic cell. The precise measurement of the director fluctuations of the liquid crystal is made possible by the use of a very precise and sensitive polarization interferometer. The great advantage of the method is that it does not depend on complex fits as it is usually done in literature.

On the heat flux and entropy produced by thermal fluctuations

We report an experimental and theoretical analysis of the energy exchanged between two conductors kept at different temperature and coupled by the electric thermal noise. Experimentally we determine, as functions of the temperature difference, the heat flux, the out-of- equilibrium variance and a conservation law for the fluctuating entropy, which we justify theoretically. The system is ruled by the same equations of two Brownian particles kept at different temperatures and coupled by an elastic force. Our results set strong constrains on the energy exchanged between coupled nano-systems kept at different temperature.}

Experimental study of the effect of disorder on subcritical crack growth dynamics

The growth dynamics of a single crack in a heterogeneous material under subcritical loading is an intermittent process; and many features of this dynamics have been shown to agree with simple models of thermally activated rupture. In order to better understand the role of material heterogeneities in this process, we study the subcritical propagation of a crack in a sheet of paper in the presence of a distribution of small defects such as holes. The experimental data obtained for two different distributions of holes are discussed in the light of models that predict the slowing down of crack growth when the disorder in the material is increased; however, in contradiction with these theoretical predictions, the experiments result in longer lasting cracks in a more ordered scenario. We argue that this effect is specific to subcritical crack dynamics and that the weakest zones between holes at close distance to each other are responsible both for the acceleration of the crack dynamics and the slightly different roughness of the crack path.

Fluctuations, linear response and heat flux of an aging system

We measure the fluctuations of the position of a Brownian particle confined by an optical trap in an aging gelatin droplet after a fast quench. Its linear response to an external perturbation is also measured. We compute the spontaneous heat flux from the particle to the bath due to the nonequilibrium formation of the gel. We show that the mean heat flux is quantitatively related to the violation of the equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation theorem as a measure of the broken detailed balance during the aging process.

Heat fluctuations in an out of equilibrium bath

We measure the energy fluctuations of a Brownian particle confined by an optical trap in an aging gelatin after a very fast quench (less than 1 ms). The strong nonequilibrium fluctuations due to the assemblage of the gel, are interpreted, within the framework of fluctuation theorem, as a heat flux from the particle towards the bath. We derive, from a simple model, an analytical expression of the heat probability distribution, which fits the experimental data and satisfies a fluctuation relation similar to that of a system in contact with two baths at different temperatures.
