Finite sampling effects on generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations for steady states

We study the effects of the finite number of experimental data on the computation of a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation around a nonequilibrium steady state of a Brownian particle in a toroidal optical trap. We show that the finite sampling has two different effects, which can give rise to a poor estimate of the linear response function. The first concerns the accessibility of the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation due to the finite number of actual perturbations imposed to the control parameter. The second concerns the propagation of the error made at the initial sampling of the external perturbation of the system. This can be highly enhanced by introducing an estimator which corrects the error of the initial sampled condition. When these two effects are taken into account in the data analysis, the generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation is verified experimentally.

Fluctuations and response in a non-equilibrium micron-sized system

The linear response of non-equilibrium systems with Markovian dynamics satisfies a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation derived from time symmetry and antisymmetry properties of the fluctuations. The relation involves the sum of two correlation functions of the observable of interest: one with the entropy excess and the second with the excess of dynamical activity with respect to the unperturbed process, without recourse to anything but the dynamics of the system. We illustrate this approach in the experimental determination of the linear response of the potential energy of a Brownian particle in a toroidal optical trap. The overdamped particle motion is effectively confined to a circle, undergoing a periodic potential and driven out of equilibrium by a non-conservative force. Independent direct and indirect measurements of the linear response around a non-equilibrium steady state are performed in this simple experimental system. The same ideas are applicable to the measurement of the response of more general non-equilibrium micron-sized systems immersed in Newtonian fluids either in stationary or non-stationary states and possibly including inertial degrees of freedom.

Fluctuations in out of equilibrium systems: from theory to experiment

We introduce from an experimental point of view the main concepts of fluctuation theorems for work, heat and entropy production in out of equilibrium systems. We will discuss the important difference between the applications of these concepts to stochastic systems and to a second class of systems (chaotic systems) where the fluctuations are induced either by chaotic flows or by fluctuating driving forces. We will mainly analyze the stochastic systems using the measurements performed in two experiments : a) a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium by an external force b) a colloidal particle trapped in a time dependent double well potential. We will rapidly describe some consequences of fluctuation theorems and some useful applications to the analysis of experimental data. As an example the case of a molecular motor will be analyzed in some details. Finally we will discuss the problems related to the applications of fluctuation theorems to chaotic systems.

Steady state fluctuation relations for systems driven by an external random force

We experimentally study the fluctuations of the work done by an external Gaussian random force on two different stochastic systems coupled to a thermal bath: a colloidal particle in an optical trap and an atomic force microscopy cantilever. We determine the corresponding probability density functions for different random forcing amplitudes ranging from a small fraction to several times the amplitude of the thermal noise. In both systems for sufficiently weak forcing amplitudes the work fluctuations satisfy the usual steady state fluctuation theorem. As the forcing amplitude drives the system far from equilibrium, deviations of the fluctuation theorem increase monotonically. The deviations can be recasted to a single master curve which only depends on the kind of stochastic external force.

Experimental verification of a modified fluctuation-dissipation relation for a micron-sized particle in a non-equilibrium steady state

A modified fluctuation-dissipation-theorem (MFDT) for a non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) is experimentally checked by studying the position fluctuations of a colloidal particle whose motion is confined in a toroidal optical trap. The NESS is generated by means of a rotating laser beam which exerts on the particle a sinusoidal conservative force plus a constant non-conservative one. The MFDT is shown to be perfectly verified by the experimental data. It can be interpreted as an equilibrium-like fluctuation-dissipation relation in the Lagrangian frame of the mean local velocity of the particle.

Aging and effective temperatures near a critical point

The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal(LC) are measured after a quench near the Fréedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. We report experimental evidence that, because of the critical slowing down, the LC presents, after the quench, several properties of an aging system, such as power law scaling versus time of correlation and response functions. During this slow relaxation, a well defined effective temperature, much larger than the heat bath temperature, can be measured using the fluctuation dissipation relation.

Experimental study of out of equilibrium fluctuations in a colloidal suspension of Laponite using optical traps

This work is devoted to the study of displacement fluctuations of micron-sized particles in an aging colloidal glass. We address the issue of the validity of the fluctuation dissipation theorem (FDT) and the time evolution of viscoelastic properties during aging of aqueous suspensions of a clay (Laponite RG) in a colloidal glass phase. Given the conflicting results reported in the literature for different experimental techniques, our goal is to check and reconcile them using \emph{simultaneously} passive and active microrheology techniques. For this purpose we measure the thermal fluctuations of micro-sized brownian particles immersed in the colloidal glass and trapped by optical tweezers. We find that both microrheology techniques lead to compatible results even at low frequencies and no violation of FDT is observed. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition.

Work fluctuations in a nematic liquid crystal

The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal are measured, by a sensitive polarization interferometer, close to the Fréedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. Using mean field theory, we define the work injected into the system by a change of the electric field and we calibrate it using Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem. We show that the work fluctuations satisfy the Transient Fluctuation Theorem. An analytical justification of this result is given. The open problems for the out of equilibrium case are finally discussed.

Probability density functions of work and heat near the stochastic resonance of a colloidal particle

We study experimentally and theoretically the probability density functions of the injected and dissipated energy in a system of a colloidal particle trapped in a double well potential periodically modulated by an external perturbation. The work done by the external force and the dissipated energy are measured close to the stochastic resonance where the injected power is maximum. We show a good agreement between the probability density functions exactly computed from a Langevin dynamics and the measured ones. The probability density function of the work done on the particle satisfies the fluctuation theorem.

Effective Temperature in a Colloidal Glass

We study the Brownian motion of particles trapped by optical tweezers inside a colloidal glass (Laponite) during the sol-gel transition. We use two methods based on passive rheology to extract the effective temperature from the fluctuations of the Brownian particles. All of them give a temperature that, within experimental errors, is equal to the heat bath temperature. Several interesting features concerning the statistical properties and the long time correlations of the particles are observed during the transition.

Attractive and repulsive cracks in a heterogeneous material

We study experimentally the paths of an assembly of cracks growing in interaction in a heterogeneous two-dimensional elastic brittle material submitted to uniaxial stress. For a given initial crack assembly geometry, we observe two types of crack path. The first one corresponds to a repulsion followed by an attraction on one end of the crack and a tip to tip attraction on the other end. The second one corresponds to a pure attraction. Only one of the crack path type is observed in a given sample. Thus, selection between the two types appears as a statistical collective process.

Work and dissipation fluctuations near the stochastic resonance of a colloidal particle

We study experimentally the fluctuations of the injected and dissipated energy in a system of a colloidal particle trapped in a double well potential periodically modulated by an external perturbation. The work done by the external force and the dissipated energy are measured close to the stochastic resonance where the injected power is maximum. We show that the steady state fluctuation theorem holds in this system.

Fluctuations of the total entropy production in stochastic systems

Fluctuations of the excess heat in an out of equilibrium steady state are experimentally investigated in two stochastic systems : an electric circuit with an imposed mean current and a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium by a periodic torque. In these two linear systems, we study excess heat that represents the difference between the dissipated heat out of equilibrium and the dissipated heat at equilibrium. Fluctuation theorem holds for the excess heat in the two experimental systems for all observation times and for all fluctuation magnitudes.

Thermodynamic time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations

We here present the complete analysis of experiments on driven Brownian motion and electric noise in a $RC$ circuit, showing that thermodynamic entropy production can be related to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in the statistical description of these nonequilibrium systems. The symmetry breaking can be expressed in terms of dynamical entropies per unit time, one for the forward process and the other for the time-reversed process. These entropies per unit time characterize dynamical randomness, i.e., temporal disorder, in time series of the nonequilibrium fluctuations. Their difference gives the well-known thermodynamic entropy production, which thus finds its origin in the time asymmetry of dynamical randomness, alias temporal disorder, in systems driven out of equilibrium.

Statistical properties of microcracking in polyurethane foams under tensile test, influence of temperature and density

We report tensile failure experiments on polyurethane (PU) foams. Experiments have been performed by imposing a constant strain rate. We work on heterogeneous materials for whom the failure does not occur suddenly and can develop as a multistep process through a succession of microcracks that end at pores. The acoustic energy and the waiting times between acoustic events follow power-law distributions. This remains true while the foam density is varied. However, experiments at low temperatures (PU foams more brittle) have not yielded power-laws for the waiting times. The cumulative acoustic energy has no power law divergence at the proximity of the failure point which is qualitatively in agreement with other experiments done at imposed strain. We notice a plateau in cumulative acoustic energy that seems to occur when a single crack starts to propagate.

Slow crack growth in polycarbonate films

We study experimentally the slow growth of a single crack in polycarbonate films submitted to uniaxial and constant imposed stress. The specificity of fracture in polycarbonate films is the appearance of flame shaped macroscopic process zones at the tips of the crack. Supported by an experimental study of the mechanical properties of polycarbonate films, an analysis of the stress dependence of the mean ratio between the process zone and crack lengths, during the crack growth, show a quantitative agreement with the Dugdale-Barenblatt model of the plastic process zone. We find that the fracture growth curves obey strong scaling properties that lead to a well defined growth master curve.

Subcritical crack growth in fibrous materials

We present experiments on the slow growth of a single crack in a fax paper sheet submitted to a constant force $F$. We find that statistically averaged crack growth curves can be described by only two parameters : the mean rupture time $τ$ and a characteristic growth length $ζ$. We propose a model based on a thermally activated rupture process that takes into account the microstructure of cellulose fibers. The model is able to reproduce the shape of the growth curve, the dependence of $ζ$ on $F$ as well as the effect of temperature on the rupture time $τ$. We find that the length scale at which rupture occurs in this model is consistently close to the diameter of cellulose microfibrils.

A dynamical law for slow crack growth in polycarbonate films

We study experimentally the slow growth of a single crack in polycarbonate films submitted to uniaxial and constant imposed stress. For this visco-plastic material, we uncover a dynamical law that describes the dependence of the instantaneous crack velocity with experimental parameters. The law involves a Dugdale-Barenblatt static description of crack tip plastic zones associated to an Eyring's law and an empirical dependence with the crack length that may come from a residual elastic field.
