Entropy production and time asymmetry in nonequilibrium fluctuations

The time-reversal symmetry of nonequilibrium fluctuations is experimentally investigated in two out-of-equilibrium systems namely, a Brownian particle in a trap moving at constant speed and an electric circuit with an imposed mean current. The dynamical randomness of their nonequilibrium fluctuations is characterized in terms of the standard and time-reversed entropies per unit time of dynamical systems theory. We present experimental results showing that their difference equals the thermodynamic entropy production in units of Boltzmann's constant.

Fluctuation theorems for harmonic oscillators

We study experimentally the thermal fluctuations of energy input and dissipation in a harmonic oscillator driven out of equilibrium, and search for Fluctuation Relations. We study transient evolution from the equilibrium state, together with non equilibrium steady states. Fluctuations Relations are obtained experimentally for both the work and the heat, for the stationary and transient evolutions. A Stationary State Fluctuation Theorem is verified for the two time prescriptions of the torque. But a Transient Fluctuation Theorem is satisfied for the work given to the system but not for the heat dissipated by the system in the case of linear forcing. Experimental observations on the statistical and dynamical properties of the fluctuation of the angle, we derive analytical expressions for the probability density function of the work and the heat. We obtain for the first time an analytic expression of the probability density function of the heat. Agreement between experiments and our modeling is excellent.

Slow crack growth : models and experiments

The properties of slow crack growth in brittle materials are analyzed both theoretically and experimentally. We propose a model based on a thermally activated rupture process. Considering a 2D spring network submitted to an external load and to thermal noise, we show that a preexisting crack in the network may slowly grow because of stress fluctuations. An analytical solution is found for the evolution of the crack length as a function of time, the time to rupture and the statistics of the crack jumps. These theoretical predictions are verified by studying experimentally the subcritical growth of a single crack in thin sheets of paper. A good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results is found. In particular, our model suggests that the statistical stress fluctuations trigger rupture events at a nanometric scale corresponding to the diameter of cellulose microfibrils.

Experimental study of work fluctuations in a harmonic oscillator

The work fluctuations of a harmonic oscillator in contact with a thermostat and driven out of equilibrium by an external force are studied experimentally. For the work both the transient and stationary state fluctuation theorems hold. The finite time corrections are very different from those of a first order Langevin equation. The heat and work fluctuations are studied when a periodic forcing is applied to the oscillator. The importance of the choice of the ''good work'' to compute the free energy from the Jarzinsky equality is discussed.

Heat fluctuations for harmonic oscillators

Heat fluctuations of a harmonic oscillator in contact with a thermostat and driven out of equilibrium by an external deterministic force are studied experimentally and theoretically within the context of Fluctuation Theorems. We consider the case of a periodic forcing of the oscillator, and we calculate the analytic probability density function of heat fluctuations. The limit of large time is discussed and we show that heat fluctuations satisfy the conventional fluctuation theorem, even if a different fluctuation relation exists for this quantity. Experimental results are also given for a transient state.

The cooperative effect of load and disorder in thermally activated rupture of a two-dimensional random fuse network

A random fuse network, or equivalently a two-dimensional spring network with quenched disorder, is subjected to a constant load and thermal noise, and studied by means of numerical simulations. Rupture is thermally activated and the lifetime follows an Arrhenius law where the energy barrier is reduced by disorder. Due to the non-homogeneous distribution of forces from the stress concentration at microcrack tips, spatial correlations between rupture events appear, but they do not affect the energy barrier's dependence on the disorder; they affect only the coupling between the disorder and the applied load.

Work fluctuation theorems for harmonic oscillators

The work fluctuations of an oscillator in contact with a thermostat and driven out of equilibrium by an external force are studied experimentally and theoretically within the context of Fluctuation Theorems (FTs). The oscillator dynamics is modeled by a second order Langevin equation. Both the transient and stationary state fluctuation theorems hold and the finite time corrections are very different from those of a first order Langevin equation. The periodic forcing of the oscillator is also studied; it presents new and unexpected short time convergences. Analytical expressions are given in all cases.

Estimate of the free energy difference in mechanical systems from work fluctuations: experiments and models

The work fluctuations of an oscillator in contact with a heat reservoir and driven out of equilibrium by an external force are studied experimentally. The oscillator dynamics is modeled by a Langevin equation. We find both experimentally and theoretically that, if the driving force does not change the equilibrium properties of the thermal fluctuations of this mechanical system, the free energy difference $ΔF$ between two equilibrium states can be exactly computed using the Jarzynski equality (JE) and the Crooks relation (CR) \cite{jarzynski1, crooks1, jarzynski2}, independently of the time scale and amplitude of the driving force. The applicability limits for the JE and CR at very large driving forces are discussed. Finally, when the work fluctuations are Gaussian, we propose an alternative empirical method to compute $ΔF$ which can be safely applied, even in cases where the JE and CR might not hold. The results of this paper are useful to compute $ΔF$ in complex systems such as the biological ones.

Subcritical statistics in rupture of fibrous materials: Experiments and model

We study experimentally the slow growth of a single crack in a fibrous material and observe stepwise growth dynamics. We model the material as a lattice where the crack is pinned by elastic traps and grows due to thermally activated stress fluctuations. In agreement with experimental data we find that the distribution of step sizes follows sub-critical point statistics with a power law (exponent 3/2) and a stress-dependent exponential cut-off diverging at the critical rupture threshold.

Experimental study of the Fluctuation-Dissipation-Relation during an aging process

The validity of fluctuation dissipation relations in an aging system is studied in a colloidal glass during the transition from a fluid-like to a solid-like state. The evolution of the rheological and electrical properties is analyzed in the range $1Hz - 40Hz$. It is found that at the beginning of the transition the fluctuation dissipation relation is strongly violated in electrical measurements. The amplitude and the persistence time of this violation are decreasing functions of frequency. At the lowest frequencies of the measuring range it persists for times which are about 5% of the time needed to form the colloidal glass. This phenomenology is quite close to the recent theoretical predictions done for the violation of the fluctuation dissipation relation in glassy systems. In contrast in the rheological measurements no violation of the fluctuation dissipation relation is observed. The reasons of this large difference between the electrical and rheological measurements are discussed.
