Adaptive Resolution Inference (ARI): Energy-Efficient Machine Learning for Internet of Things

The implementation of machine learning in Internet of Things devices poses significant operational challenges due to limited energy and computation resources. In recent years, significant efforts have been made to implement simplified ML models that can achieve reasonable performance while reducing computation and energy, for example by pruning weights in neural networks, or using reduced precision for the parameters and arithmetic operations. However, this type of approach is limited by the performance of the ML implementation, i.e., by the loss for example in accuracy due to the model simplification. In this article, we present adaptive resolution inference (ARI), a novel approach that enables to evaluate new tradeoffs between energy dissipation and model performance in ML implementations. The main principle of the proposed approach is to run inferences with reduced precision (quantization) and use the margin over the decision threshold to determine if either the result is reliable, or the inference must run with the full model. The rationale is that quantization only introduces small deviations in the inference scores, such that if the scores have a sufficient margin over the decision threshold, it is unlikely that the full model would have a different result. Therefore, we can run the quantized model first, and only when the scores do not have a sufficient margin, the full model is run. This enables most inferences to run with the reduced precision model and only a small fraction requires the full model, so significantly reducing computation and energy while not affecting model performance. The proposed ARI approach is presented, analyzed in detail, and evaluated using different data sets for floating-point and stochastic computing implementations. The results show that ARI can significantly reduce the energy for inference in different configurations with savings between 40% and 85%.

Dependability Evaluation of Stable Diffusion with Soft Errors on the Model Parameters

Stable Diffusion is a popular Transformer-based model for image generation from text; it applies an image information creator to the input text and the visual knowledge is added in a step-by-step fashion to create an image that corresponds to the input text. However, this diffusion process can be corrupted by errors from the underlying hardware, which are especially relevant for implementations at the nanoscales. In this paper, the dependability of Stable Diffusion is studied focusing on soft errors in the memory that stores the model parameters; specifically, errors are injected into some critical layers of the Transformer in different blocks of the image information creator, to evaluate their impact on model performance. The simulations results reveal several conclusions: 1) errors on the down blocks of the creator have a larger impact on the quality of the generated images than those on the up blocks, while the errors on middle block have negligible effect; 2) errors on the self-attention (SA) layers have larger impact on the results than those on the cross-attention (CA) layers; 3) for CA layers, errors on deeper levels result in a larger impact; 4) errors on blocks at the first levels tend to introduce noise in the image, and those on deep layers tend to introduce large colored blocks. These results provide an initial understanding of the impact of errors on Stable Diffusion.

Automatic laminectomy cutting plane planning based on artificial intelligence in robot assisted laminectomy surgery

Objective: This study aims to use artificial intelligence to realize the automatic planning of laminectomy, and verify the method. Methods: We propose a two-stage approach for automatic laminectomy cutting plane planning. The first stage was the identification of key points. 7 key points were manually marked on each CT image. The Spatial Pyramid Upsampling Network (SPU-Net) algorithm developed by us was used to accurately locate the 7 key points. In the second stage, based on the identification of key points, a personalized coordinate system was generated for each vertebra. Finally, the transverse and longitudinal cutting planes of laminectomy were generated under the coordinate system. The overall effect of planning was evaluated. Results: In the first stage, the average localization error of the SPU-Net algorithm for the seven key points was 0.65mm. In the second stage, a total of 320 transverse cutting planes and 640 longitudinal cutting planes were planned by the algorithm. Among them, the number of horizontal plane planning effects of grade A, B, and C were 318(99.38%), 1(0.31%), and 1(0.31%), respectively. The longitudinal planning effects of grade A, B, and C were 622(97.18%), 1(0.16%), and 17(2.66%), respectively. Conclusions: In this study, we propose a method for automatic surgical path planning of laminectomy based on the localization of key points in CT images. The results showed that the method achieved satisfactory results. More studies are needed to confirm the reliability of this approach in the future.

MaskOCR: Text Recognition with Masked Encoder-Decoder Pretraining

Text images contain both visual and linguistic information. However, existing pre-training techniques for text recognition mainly focus on either visual representation learning or linguistic knowledge learning. In this paper, we propose a novel approach MaskOCR to unify vision and language pre-training in the classical encoder-decoder recognition framework. We adopt the masked image modeling approach to pre-train the feature encoder using a large set of unlabeled real text images, which allows us to learn strong visual representations. In contrast to introducing linguistic knowledge with an additional language model, we directly pre-train the sequence decoder. Specifically, we transform text data into synthesized text images to unify the data modalities of vision and language, and enhance the language modeling capability of the sequence decoder using a proposed masked image-language modeling scheme. Significantly, the encoder is frozen during the pre-training phase of the sequence decoder. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves superior performance on benchmark datasets, including Chinese and English text images.

Deformations and abelian extensions on anti-pre-Lie algebras

In this paper, we introduce the representation of anti-pre-Lie algebras and give the second cohomology group of anti-pre-Lie algebras. As applications, first, we study linear deformations of anti-pre-Lie algebras. The notion of a Nijenhuis operator on an anti-pre-Lie algebra is introduced which can generate a trivial linear deformation of an anti-pre-Lie algebra. Then, we study formal deformations of anti-pre-Lie algebras. We show that the infinitesimal of a formal deformation is a 2-cocycle with the coefficients in the regular representation and depends only on its cohomology class. Moreover, if the second cohomology group $H^2(A;A)$ is trivial, then the anti-pre-Lie algebra is rigid. Finally, we introduce the notion of abelian extensions. We show that abelian extensions are classified by the second cohomology group $H^2(A;V)$.

Concurrent Classifier Error Detection (CCED) in Large Scale Machine Learning Systems

The complexity of Machine Learning (ML) systems increases each year, with current implementations of large language models or text-to-image generators having billions of parameters and requiring billions of arithmetic operations. As these systems are widely utilized, ensuring their reliable operation is becoming a design requirement. Traditional error detection mechanisms introduce circuit or time redundancy that significantly impacts system performance. An alternative is the use of Concurrent Error Detection (CED) schemes that operate in parallel with the system and exploit their properties to detect errors. CED is attractive for large ML systems because it can potentially reduce the cost of error detection. In this paper, we introduce Concurrent Classifier Error Detection (CCED), a scheme to implement CED in ML systems using a concurrent ML classifier to detect errors. CCED identifies a set of check signals in the main ML system and feeds them to the concurrent ML classifier that is trained to detect errors. The proposed CCED scheme has been implemented and evaluated on two widely used large-scale ML models: Contrastive Language Image Pretraining (CLIP) used for image classification and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) used for natural language applications. The results show that more than 95 percent of the errors are detected when using a simple Random Forest classifier that is order of magnitude simpler than CLIP or BERT. These results illustrate the potential of CCED to implement error detection in large-scale ML models.

Long-lead forecasts of wintertime air stagnation index in southern China using oceanic memory effects

Stagnant weather condition is one of the major contributors to air pollution as it is favorable for the formation and accumulation of pollutants. To measure the atmosphere's ability to dilute air pollutants, Air Stagnation Index (ASI) has been introduced as an important meteorological index. Therefore, making long-lead ASI forecasts is vital to make plans in advance for air quality management. In this study, we found that autumn Niño indices derived from sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies show a negative correlation with wintertime ASI in southern China, offering prospects for a prewinter forecast. We developed an LSTM-based model to predict the future wintertime ASI. Results demonstrated that multivariate inputs (past ASI and Niño indices) achieve better forecast performance than univariate input (only past ASI). The model achieves a correlation coefficient of 0.778 between the actual and predicted ASI, exhibiting a high degree of consistency.

Cohomologies of pre-LieDer pairs and applications

In this paper, we use the higher derived bracket to give the controlling algebra of pre-LieDer pairs. We give the cohomology of pre-LieDer pairs by using the twist $L_\infty$-algebra of this controlling algebra. In particular, we define the cohomology of regular pre-LieDer pairs. We study infinitesimal deformations of pre-LieDer pairs, which are characterized by the second cohomology group of pre-LieDer pairs. We also define the cohomology of regular pre-LieDer pairs with coefficients in arbitrary representation and using the second cohomology group to classify abelian extensions of regular pre-LieDer pairs.

Deformations and abelian extensions of compatible pre-Lie algebras

In this paper, we first give the notation of a compatible pre-Lie algebra and its representation. We study the relation between compatible Lie algebras and compatible pre-Lie algebras. We also construct a new bidifferential graded Lie algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements are compatible pre-Lie structures. We give the bidifferential graded Lie algebra which controls deformations of a compatible pre-Lie algebra. Then, we introduce a cohomology of a compatible pre-Lie algebra with coefficients in itself. We study infinitesimal deformations of compatible pre-Lie algebras and show that equivalent infinitesimal deformations are in the same second cohomology group. We further give the notion of a Nijenhuis operator on a compatible pre-Lie algebra. We study formal deformations of compatible pre-Lie algebras. If the second cohomology group $\huaH^2(\g;\g)$ is trivial, then the compatible pre-Lie algebra is rigid. Finally, we give a cohomology of a compatible pre-Lie algebra with coefficients in arbitrary representation and study abelian extensions of compatible pre-Lie algebras using this cohomology. We show that abelian extensions are classified by the second cohomology group.

The full cohomology, abelian extensions and formal deformations of Hom-pre-Lie algebras

The main purpose of this paper is to provide a full cohomology of a Hom-pre-Lie algebra with coefficients in a given representation. This new type of cohomology exploit strongly the Hom-type structure and fits perfectly with simultaneous deformations of the multiplication and the homomorphism defining a Hom-pre-Lie algebra. Moreover, we show that its second cohomology group classifies abelian extensions of a Hom-pre-Lie algebra by a representation.

Gate-tunable Intrinsic Anomalous Hall Effect in Epitaxial MnBi2Te4 Films

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is an important transport signature revealing topological properties of magnetic materials and their spin textures. Recently, antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 has been demonstrated to be an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator that exhibits quantum AHE in exfoliated nanoflakes. However, its complicated AHE behaviors may offer an opportunity for the unexplored correlation between magnetism and band structure. Here, we show the Berry curvature dominated intrinsic AHE in wafer-scale MnBi2Te4 thin films. By utilizing a high-dielectric SrTiO3 as the back-gate, we unveil an ambipolar conduction and electron-hole carrier (n-p) transition in ~7 septuple layer MnBi2Te4. A quadratic relation between the saturated AHE resistance and longitudinal resistance suggests its intrinsic AHE mechanism. For ~3 septuple layer MnBi2Te4, however, the AHE reverses its sign from pristine negative to positive under the electric-gating. The first-principles calculations demonstrate that such behavior is due to the competing Berry curvature between polarized spin-minority-dominated surface states and spin-majority-dominated inner-bands. Our results shed light on the physical mechanism of the gate-tunable intrinsic AHE in MnBi2Te4 thin films and provide a feasible approach to engineering its AHE.

On Hom-pre-Poisson algebras

In this paper, first we discuss Hom-pre-Poisson algebras and their relationships with Hom-Poisson algebra. Then we introduce the notion of a Hom-pre-Gerstenhaber algebra and show that a Hom-pre-Gerstenhaber algebra gives rise to a Hom-Gerstenhaber algebra. Moreover, we consider Hom-dendriform formal deformations of Hom-zinbiel algebras and show that Hom-pre-Poisson algebras are the corresponding semi-classical limits. Furthermore, we consider Hom-O-operators on Hom-Poisson algebras and study their relationships with Hom-pre-Poisson algebras. Finally, we define the notion of dual-Hom-pre-Poisson algebra and show that a Hom-average-operator on a Hom-Poisson algebra naturally gives rise to a dual-Hom-pre-Poisson algebra.

PGNet: Real-time Arbitrarily-Shaped Text Spotting with Point Gathering Network

The reading of arbitrarily-shaped text has received increasing research attention. However, existing text spotters are mostly built on two-stage frameworks or character-based methods, which suffer from either Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS), Region-of-Interest (RoI) operations, or character-level annotations. In this paper, to address the above problems, we propose a novel fully convolutional Point Gathering Network (PGNet) for reading arbitrarily-shaped text in real-time. The PGNet is a single-shot text spotter, where the pixel-level character classification map is learned with proposed PG-CTC loss avoiding the usage of character-level annotations. With a PG-CTC decoder, we gather high-level character classification vectors from two-dimensional space and decode them into text symbols without NMS and RoI operations involved, which guarantees high efficiency. Additionally, reasoning the relations between each character and its neighbors, a graph refinement module (GRM) is proposed to optimize the coarse recognition and improve the end-to-end performance. Experiments prove that the proposed method achieves competitive accuracy, meanwhile significantly improving the running speed. In particular, in Total-Text, it runs at 46.7 FPS, surpassing the previous spotters with a large margin.

Giant nonlinear anomalous Hall effect induced by spin-dependent band structure evolution

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is the key transport signature unlocking topological properties of magnetic materials. While AHE is usually proportional to the magnetization, the nonlinearity suggests the existence of complex magnetic and electron orders. Nonlinear AHE includes the topological Hall effect (THE) that has been widely used to identify the presence of spin chirality in real space. But it can in principle be induced by band structure evolution via Berry curvatures in the reciprocal space. This effect has been largely overlooked due to the intertwined mechanisms in both real and reciprocal spaces. Here, we observed a giant nonlinear AHE with the resistivity up to 383.5 uohm cm, contributing unprecedentedly 97% of the total Hall response in EuCd2As2. Moreover, it can be further enhanced by tilting the magnetic field 30° away from [001] direction, reaching a large anomalous Hall angle up to 21%. Although it shows exactly the same double-peak feature as THE, our scaling analysis and first-principles calculations reveal that the Berry phase is extremely sensitive to the spin canting, and nonlinear AHE is a consequence of band structure evolution under the external magnetic fields. When the spins gradually tilt from the in-plane antiferromagnetic ground state to out-of-plane direction, band crossing and band inversion occur, introducing a bandgap at Γ point at a canting angle of 45°. That contributes to the enhancement of Berry curvature and consequently a large intrinsic Hall conductivity. Our results unequivocally reveal the sensitive dependence of band structures on spin tilting process under external magnetic fields and its pronounced influence on the transport properties, which also need to be taken into consideration in other magnetic materials.

Van der Waals Ferromagnetic Josephson Junctions

Superconductor-ferromagnet (S-F) interfaces in two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures present a unique opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and ferromagnetism. The realization of such nanoscale heterostructures in van der Waals (vdW) crystals remains largely unexplored due to the challenge of making an atomically-sharp interface from their layered structures. Here, we build a vdW ferromagnetic Josephson junction (JJ) by inserting a few-layer ferromagnetic insulator Cr2Ge2Te6 into two layers of superconductor NbSe2. Owing to the remanent magnetic moment of the barrier, the critical current and the corresponding junction resistance exhibit a hysteretic and oscillatory behavior against in-plane magnetic fields, manifesting itself as a strong Josephson coupling state. Through the control of this hysteresis, we can effectively trace the magnetic properties of atomic Cr2Ge2Te6 in response to the external magnetic field. Also, we observe a central minimum of critical current in some thick JJ devices, evidencing the coexistence of 0 and π phase coupling in the junction region. Our study paves the way to exploring the sensitive probes of weak magnetism and multifunctional building blocks for phase-related superconducting circuits with the use of vdW heterostructures.

The Discovery of Tunable Universality Class in Superconducting $β$-W Thin Films

The interplay between quenched disorder and critical behavior in quantum phase transitions is conceptually fascinating and of fundamental importance for understanding phase transitions. However, it is still unclear whether or not the quenched disorder influences the universality class of quantum phase transitions. More crucially, the absence of superconducting-metal transitions under in-plane magnetic fields in 2D superconductors imposes constraints on the universality of quantum criticality. Here, we discover the tunable universality class of superconductor-metal transition by changing the disorder strength in $β$-W films with varying thickness. The finite-size scaling uncovers the switch of universality class: quantum Griffiths singularity to multiple quantum criticality at a critical thickness of $t_{c \perp 1}\sim 8 nm$ and then from multiple quantum criticality to single criticality at $t_{c\perp 2}\sim 16 nm$. Moreover, the superconducting-metal transition is observed for the first time under in-plane magnetic fields and the universality class is changed at $t_{c \parallel }\sim 8 nm$. The discovery of tunable universality class under both out-of-plane and in-plane magnetic fields provides broad information for the disorder effect on superconducting-metal transitions and quantum criticality.

Edge superconductivity in Multilayer WTe2 Josephson junction

WTe2, as a type-II Weyl semimetal, has 2D Fermi arcs on the (001) surface in the bulk and 1D helical edge states in its monolayer. These features have recently attracted wide attention in condensed matter physics. However, in the intermediate regime between the bulk and monolayer, the edge states have not been resolved owing to its closed band gap which makes the bulk states dominant. Here, we report the signatures of the edge superconductivity by superconducting quantum interference measurements in multilayer WTe2 Josephson junctions and we directly map the localized supercurrent. In thick WTe2 (~60 nm), the supercurrent is uniformly distributed by bulk states with symmetric Josephson effect ($\left|I_c^+(B)\right|=\left|I_c^-(B)\right|$). In thin WTe2 (10 nm), however, the supercurrent becomes confined to the edge and its width reaches up to 1.4 um and exhibits non-symmetric behavior $\left|I_c^+(B)\right|\neq \left|I_c^-(B)\right|$. The ability to tune the edge domination by changing thickness and the edge superconductivity establishes WTe2 as a promising topological system with exotic quantum phases and a rich physics.

On Hom-pre-Lie bialgebras

In this paper we introduce the notion of Hom-pre-Lie bialgebra in the general framework of the cohomology theory for Hom-Lie algebras. We show that Hom-pre-Lie bialgebras, standard Manin triples for Hom-pre-Lie algebras and certain matched pairs of Hom-pre-Lie algebras are equivalent. Due to the usage of the cohomology theory, it makes us successfully study the coboundary Hom-pre-Lie bialgebras. The notion of Hom-s-matrix is introduced, by which we can construct Hom-pre-Lie bialgebras naturally. Finally we introduce the notions of Hom-O-operators on Hom-pre-Lie algebras and Hom-L-dendriform algebras, by which we construct Hom-s-matrices.
