Low-Complexity Channel Estimation Framework for Non-Square UPA-Assisted XL-MIMO Systems

Low-complexity channel state information acquisition is crucial for extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. However, practical deployments of non-square uniform planar arrays (UPAs) in hybrid-field environments face prohibitive computational complexity and degraded estimation accuracy due to limited elevation angle-of-arrival (AoA) resolution and deteriorated channel sparsity. To tackle these challenges, we propose a low-complexity channel estimation framework. First, an antenna-domain extrapolation scheme synthesizes a virtually enlarged vertical aperture via the spatial correlation among adjacent elements, breaking the elevation resolution limit. The framework then disentangles the parameter coupling by transforming the two-dimensional joint search into two sequential one-dimensional searches. Specifically, elevation AoAs are extracted via an extrapolation-enhanced discrete Fourier transform-Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP) algorithm along the virtually enlarged vertical uniform linear array (ULA), while azimuth AoAs, ranges, and gains are acquired utilizing a discrete fractional Fourier transform-NOMP algorithm along a horizontal ULA. A subspace fitting-driven path matching algorithm pairs these decoupled parameters. To overcome the accuracy bottleneck of the antenna-domain scheme, a correlation-domain extrapolation scheme is further developed by exploiting the structural properties of the spatial correlation matrix to decouple the near-field quadratic and azimuth phase components, yielding a noise-suppressed virtual array. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Mode Switching for RDARS-Aided ISAC Systems: From Optimization to Deep Unfolding

Reconfigurable distributed antennas and reflecting surface (RDARS) has recently emerged as a promising architecture for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), owing to its flexible element-wise mode switching between connection and reflection modes. In this paper, to fully reap the benefits of mode configuration, muting elements that can absorb the incident energy are introduced into RDARS-aided ISAC systems to mitigate multi-user interference (MUI) and enhance sensing performance. To draw useful insights, we first investigate the special cases of single-UE communication, single-target sensing, and two-UE communication to reveal the importance of muting elements. Specifically, the maximum communication and sensing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) expressions are respectively derived for the three cases, together with the optimal number of muting elements for explicitly characterizing the tradeoff between reflection gain loss and MUI suppression. Next, we consider the joint waveform and tri-mode switching design for RDARS-aided ISAC systems, where an alternating optimization (AO)-based penalty dual decomposition (APDD) algorithm is proposed to solve the mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Furthermore, a model-driven APDD-Net is developed by deeply unfolding the APDD iterations into a layer-wise architecture, where key parameters are learned to reduce the computational complexity and accelerate convergence. Simulation results verify the theoretical findings on the muting gain and demonstrate that the proposed APDD-Net achieves a better tradeoff between communication and sensing performance compared with benchmark schemes.

Pinching-Antenna Enabled Multicell Wireless Systems

Pinching antenna (PA) systems have recently emerged as a promising flexible-antenna technology, which can reconstruct the wireless propagation environment by dynamically adjusting the positions of pinching elements along dielectric waveguides, thereby providing new spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) for enhancing wireless system performance. This paper investigates a multi-waveguide PA-based multi-cell communication system, focusing on the joint optimization of precoding matrices, waveguide power allocation, and antenna placement to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR). In multi-cell scenarios, inter-cell interference typically leads to a highly coupled and nonconvex WSR maximization problem. To address this challenge, an efficient alternating optimization framework is adopted to optimize each variable in an iterative way. Specifically, fractional programming is first employed to reformulate the original problem by introducing auxiliary variables that decouple the signal and interference terms. Based on this reformulation, block coordinate descent is then applied to optimize the precoding matrices and power allocation, leading to closed-form or semi-closed-form updates. For the high-dimensional and nonconvex PA placement problem, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is utilized to perform an efficient search and improve scalability. Numerical results demonstrate that, under various system configurations, the proposed scheme significantly outperforms baseline methods, including average power allocation, fixed antenna placement, conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and massive MIMO. These results highlight the strong potential of PA systems for large-scale multi-cell wireless communications.

Delay-Doppler Domain Channel Estimation: What if Sparsity is Unknown?

Sparsity in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain enables efficient channel estimation, but the realization-wise sparsity level is rarely known in advance, and it fluctuates. What if we could estimate the channel without ever knowing how many delays or Dopplers are active? This paper answers that question. We propose a sparsity-agnostic structured estimator that requires no prior knowledge of delay or Doppler sparsity budgets. The key idea is to exploit the Cartesian-product structure of DD support (active delays share a common Doppler set) and to select the support dimensions directly from the data via the Bayesian information criterion. We instantiate the framework on an affine frequency division multiplexing system, where the observation model naturally admits an on-grid DD representation. Numerical results demonstrate that it recovers the exact support with high probability and achieves near-oracle channel reconstruction accuracy, consistently outperforming fixed-budget baselines and sparse Bayesian learning. The approach is waveform-agnostic and offers a practical, adaptive solution for DD-domain channel estimation under unknown and time-varying sparsity.

A New Paradigm Towards Reconfigurable Environment: Reconfigurable Distributed Antennas and Reflecting Surface

Reconfigurable distributed antennas and reflecting surface (RDARS) has emerged as a transformative solution to address the stringent requirements of future wireless networks. By combining distributed active antennas with reconfigurable passive reflecting surfaces, RDARS integrates the advantages of both active transmission and passive wave control in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner. This hybrid architecture enables enhanced coverage, improved spectral efficiency, and seamless support for integrated communication and sensing. In this article, we first introduce the fundamental architecture and working principles of RDARS, followed by practical benefits and comparisons with recently proposed intelligent surface variants. We then highlight the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains in representative applications of RDARS-aided communication and sensing scenarios, where RDARS demonstrates clear advantages over conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. Finally, we outline key challenges related to practical implementation and resource allocation, and discuss potential research directions. With its unique hybrid mode synergy, RDARS is envisioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of next-generation intelligent communication systems.

Multi-Mode Pinching-Antenna Systems: Polarization-Aware Full-Wave Modeling and Optimization

Millimeter-wave and terahertz communications face a fundamental challenge: overcoming severe path loss without sacrificing spectral efficiency. Pinching antenna systems (PASS) address this by bringing radiators physically close to users, yet existing frameworks treat the waveguide as a mere transmission line, overlooking its inherent multi-mode capabilities and the critical role of polarization. This paper develops the first polarization-aware, full-wave electromagnetic model for multi-mode PASS (MMPASS), capturing spatial radiation patterns, modal polarization states, and polarization matching efficiency from first principles. Leveraging this physically grounded model, we reveal fundamental trade-offs among waveguide attenuation, atmospheric absorption, and geometric spreading, yielding closed-form solutions for optimal PA placement and orientation in single-user scenarios. Extending to multi-user settings, we propose a modular optimization framework that integrates fractional programming with closed-form polarization updates, scaling gracefully to arbitrary numbers of waveguides, PAs, and users. Numerical results show that MMPASS achieves up to a 167% increase in spectral efficiency compared with single-mode PASS. Moreover, when comparing MMPASS with its polarization-ignorant counterpart, polarization awareness alone improves the sum rate by up to 23%. By bridging rigorous electromagnetic theory with scalable optimization, MMPASS establishes a physically complete and practically viable foundation for future high-frequency wireless networks.

Non-Orthogonal HARQ-CC over SDR: A GNU Radio-Based Implementation

Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) schemes typically allocate all available resources to retransmit failed packets to ensure reliability. However, under stringent delay constraints, these schemes often exhibit low spectral efficiency and increased transmission latency. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an efficient Non-Orthogonal HARQ with Chase Combining (N-HARQ-CC) transmission strategy. Specifically, the proposed approach allocates a larger portion of retransmission resources to new data packets, reserving only a small fraction for retransmitting previously erroneous packets. This is based on the observation that only a small number of information bits are typically incorrect, enabling surplus communication resources to be utilized for transmitting new messages. The N-HARQ-CC scheme retransmits the same redundant version of a failed packet and employs Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) for decoding. To minimize complex packet scheduling and decoding complexity, the proposed scheme limits superposition to at most two messages per transmission round. At the receiver, Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) is used to decouple the superimposed messages. The proposed N-HARQ-CC system was implemented using GNU Radio and USRP platforms for validation. Compared to conventional Type-I HARQ and HARQ-CC schemes, the proposed scheme achieves a significant improvement in spectral efficiency of approximately 0.5 bps/Hz, aligning with the low-latency requirements of 6G networks.

UAV Swarm Enabled Aerial Movable Antenna System for Low-Altitude Economy: From Far-Field to Near-Field Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) mobility provides an ideal platform for implementing aerial movable antenna (AMA) system enabled by UAV swarm cooperation. Besides, AMA system is readily to achieve an extremely large-scale array aperture, rendering the conventional far-field uniform plane wave (UPW) model no longer valid for aerial-to-ground links. This paper studies the UAV swarm enabled near-field AMA communication, by taking into account the non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) model, where UAV swarm trajectory simultaneously influences the channel amplitude and phase. We formulate a general optimization problem to maximize the minimum average communication rate over user equipments (UEs), by jointly optimizing the 3D UAV swarm trajectory and receive beamforming for all UEs. To draw useful insights, the special case of single UE is first studied, and successive convex approximation (SCA) technique is proposed to efficiently optimize the UAV swarm trajectory. For the special case of placement optimization, the optimal placement positions of UAVs for cases of single UAV and two UAVs are derived in closed-form. Then, for the special case of two UEs, we show that an inter-UE interference (IUI)-free communication can be achieved by symmetrically placing an even number of UAVs along a hyperbola, with its foci corresponding to the locations of the two UEs. Furthermore, for arbitrary number of UEs, an alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to efficiently tackle the non-convex optimization problem. Numerical results validate the significant performance gains over the benchmark schemes.

Deep Learning-Based Channel Extrapolation for Dual-Band Massive MIMO Systems

Future wireless communication systems will increasingly rely on the integration of millimeter wave (mmWave) and sub-6 GHz bands to meet heterogeneous demands on high-speed data transmission and extensive coverage. To fully exploit the benefits of mmWave bands in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, highly accurate channel state information (CSI) is required. However, directly estimating the mmWave channel demands substantial pilot overhead due to the large CSI dimension and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) led by severe path loss and blockage attenuation. In this paper, we propose an efficient \textbf{M}ulti-\textbf{D}omain \textbf{F}usion \textbf{C}hannel \textbf{E}xtrapolator (MDFCE) to extrapolate sub-6 GHz band CSI to mmWave band CSI, so as to reduce the pilot overhead for mmWave CSI acquisition in dual band massive MIMO systems. Unlike traditional channel extrapolation methods based on mathematical modeling, the proposed MDFCE combines the mixture-of-experts framework and the multi-head self-attention mechanism to fuse multi-domain features of sub-6 GHz CSI, aiming to characterize the mapping from sub-6 GHz CSI to mmWave CSI effectively and efficiently. The simulation results demonstrate that MDFCE can achieve superior performance with less training pilots compared with existing methods across various antenna array scales and signal-to-noise ratio levels while showing a much higher computational efficiency.

Joint Sparsity and Beamforming Design for RDARS-Aided Systems

Reconfigurable distributed antennas and reflecting surface (RDARS) has emerged as a promising architecture for communication and sensing performance enhancement. In particular, the new selection gain can be achieved by leveraging the dynamic working mode selection between connection and reflection modes, whereas low-complexity element configuration remains an open issue. In this paper, we consider a RDARS-assisted communication system, where the connected elements are formed as a uniform sparse array for simplified mode configuration while achieving enlarged physical array aperture. The sum rate maximization problem is then formulated by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming matrices and sparsity of connected element array. For the special cases of a single user equipment (UE) and two UEs, the optimal sparsity designs are derived in closed-form. Then, for an arbitrary number of UEs, a weighted minimum mean-square error-based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed to tackle the non-convex optimization problem. Numerical results demonstrate the importance of optimizing the sparsity and the effectiveness of low-complexity sparsity optimization.

Cooperative Rotatable IRSs for Wireless Communications: Joint Beamforming and Orientation Optimization

Rotatable intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) introduce a new degree of freedom (DoF) for shaping wireless propagation by adaptively adjusting the orientation of IRSs. This paper considers an angle-dependent reflection model in a wireless communication system aided by two rotatable IRSs. Specifically, we study the joint design of the base station transmit beamforming, as well as the cooperative passive beamforming and orientation of the two IRSs, to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Under the light-of-sight (LoS) channels, we first develop a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based method to determine the IRS rotation and derive an optimal rotation in a closed-form expression for a two-dimensional IRS deployment. Then, we extend the design to the general Rician fading channels by proposing an efficient alternating optimization and PSO (AO-PSO) algorithm. Numerical results validate the substantial gains achieved by the IRS rotation over fixed-IRS schemes and also demonstrate the superior performance of the double rotatable IRSs over a single rotatable IRS given a sufficient total number of IRS elements.

Semi-Passive IRS Enabled Sensing with Group Movable Sensors

The performance of the sensing system is limited by the signal attenuation and the number of receiving components. In this letter, we investigate the sensor position selection in a semi-passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enabled non-line-of-sight (NLoS) sensing system. The IRS consists of passive elements and active sensors, where the sensors can receive and process the echo signal for direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation. Motivated by the movable antenna array and fluid antenna system, we consider the case where the sensors are integrated into a group for movement and derive the corresponding Cramer-Rao bound (CRB). Then, the optimal solution for the positions of the movable sensors (MSs) to the CRB minimization problem is derived in closed form. Moreover, we characterize the relationship between the CRB and system parameters. Theoretical analysis and numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed MS scheme over the fixed-position (FP) scheme.

Asymptotic Performance Analysis of Fluid Antenna Systems: An Extreme Value Theory Perspective

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) allow dynamic reconfiguration to achieve superior diversity gains and reliability. To quantify the performance scaling of FAS with a large number of antenna ports, this paper leverages extreme value theory (EVT) to conduct an asymptotic analysis of the outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC). The analysis reveals that the OP decays approximately exponentially with the number of antenna ports. Moreover, we establish upper and lower bounds for the asymptotic EC, uncovering its double-logarithmic scaling law. Furthermore, we re-substantiate these scaling laws by exploiting the fact that the mode of the Gumbel distribution scales logarithmically. Besides, we theoretically prove that spatial correlation among antenna ports degrades both OP and EC. All analytical findings are conclusively validated by numerical results.

Rotatable IRS Aided Wireless Communication

Rotatable intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) introduces a new spatial degree of freedom (DoF) by dynamically adjusting orientations without the need of changing its elements' positions in real time. To unleash the full potential of rotatable IRSs for wireless communications, this paper investigates the joint optimization of IRS rotation angles to maximize the minimum expected signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over all locations within a given target area. We first propose an angle-dependent channel model that accurately characterizes the reception and reflection of each IRS element. Different from the conventional cosine-law assumption, the proposed model captures the practical electromagnetic characteristics of the IRS, including the effective reception area and reflection efficiency. For the single target location case, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based algorithm is developed to solve the SNR maximization problem, and a closed-form expression for a near-optimal solution is derived to provide useful insights. For the general area coverage enhancement case, the optimal rotation is obtained through a two-loop PSO-based iterative algorithm with null-point detection. In this algorithm, the outer loop updates the global rotation angles to maximize the minimum SNR over the target area, whereas the inner loop evaluates the SNR distribution within the area to identify the location corresponding to the minimum SNR through null-point detection. Numerical results demonstrate significant SNR improvement achieved by the proposed rotatable IRS design over various benchmark schemes under different system setups.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming with Sensing-Assisted Discrete Phase Shifts for Dual-RIS ISAC Systems

Targeting the requirements of 6G, this paper investigates a semi-passive dual-reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, tackling the max-min user signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) problem via joint active and passive beamforming to enhance system performance and ensure user fairness. Addressing this challenge, we first utilize dual RISs for user angle estimation to simplify the solution process of the formulated problem, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm is then developed. Specifically, semi-definite relaxation and the bisection method are employed to solve the transmit beamforming optimization subproblem. For the RIS discrete phase shifts, a sensing-assisted approach is adopted to constrain the optimization search space, with two distinct low-complexity search strategies introduced for different RIS sizes. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves performance close to the ideal continuous phase shift benchmark, outperforms conventional discrete phase shift optimization algorithms, and exhibits a significant improvement over single-RIS systems.

Active IRS Assisted Joint Uplink and Downlink Communications

In this paper, we investigate an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless communication system, where active IRSs (AIRSs) are deployed to assist communication between a base station (BS) and users of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL). We aim to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of UL and DL communications through joint optimization of BS, AIRS beamforming, and AIRS element allocation. First, we study three deployment schemes, namely distributed AIRSs, BS-side AIRS, and user-side AIRS. For distributed AIRSs, both optimal and near-optimal solutions are derived in closed form. To draw useful insights, we analytically compare the deployment schemes in terms of the rate performance under the single-user setup. For the multi-user case, we consider two beamforming setups at the distributed AIRSs to balance performance and complexity tradeoffs. Regarding the user-adaptive AIRS beamforming, different AIRS beamforming vectors are adopted for each user; while for the static AIRS beamforming, all users share the same beamforming vectors, with identical phase shifts but different amplitudes for UL and DL. With the user-adaptive AIRS beamforming, we focus on the optimization of element allocation for rate maximization. With static AIRS beamforming, we solve the rate maximization problem by optimizing the BS transmit/receive beamformers, user beamforming, and AIRS beamforming. Despite its non-convexity, we develop an efficient alternating optimization (AO) based algorithm that solves each sub-problem optimally. Numerical results validate the practical advantages of distributed AIRSs compared to passive IRS (PIRS), BS-side AIRS, and user-side AIRS, and highlight the benefits of dynamic IRS beamforming.

Bridge Micro-Deformation Monitoring Scheme with Integrated Sensing and Communications

In this paper, we propose a novel integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) scheme to perform bridge micro-deformation monitoring (BMDM) in complex environments. We first provide an excitation-bridge coupling model to represent the micro-deformation process of the bridge. Next, we design a novel frame structure for BMDM applications, and construct the OFDM echo channel model for basic scene of BMDM, including micro-deformation, dynamic objects, and static environment. Then, we develop a phasor statistical analysis method based on average cancellation algorithm to suppress the interference of dynamic objects, as well as a circle fitting method based on least squares algorithm to remove the interference of static environment near the monitoring area. Furthermore, we extract the micro-deformation feature vector from the OFDM echo signals after inverse discrete fourier transform (IDFT), and derive vertical micro-deformation value with the time-frequency phase resources. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed BMDM scheme and its robustness against both dynamic interferences and static interferences.

Flexible XL-MIMO via Array Configuration Codebook: Codebook Design and Array Configuration Training

XL-MIMO emerges as a promising technology to achieve unprecedented enhancements in spectral efficiency and spatial resolution, via orders-of-magnitude increase in the antenna array size. However, the practical issues of high hardware cost and power consumption pose great challenges towards the cost-effective implementation of XL-MIMO. To address such challenges, this paper proposes a novel concept called array configuration codebook (ACC), which enables flexible XL-MIMO cost-effectively and improves the system performance compared with conventional antenna selection (AS) schemes with limited number of RF chains. Specifically, ACC refers to a set of pre-designed array configuration codewords, where each codeword specifies the positions of activated antenna pixels. Then, flexible XL-MIMO architecture can be enabled via dynamical pixel activation based on the designed ACC, without having to exhaustively try all possible combinations of the antenna pixels activations. As an illustration, we give a specific codebook design, encompassing the classic compact array (CA), uniform sparse array (USA), modular array (MoA), nested array (NA), and co-prime array (CPA), and each codeword is specified by one array configuration parameter. With the designed ACC, array configuration training is considered for multi-UE communication to maximize the sum rate. To reduce the training overhead of exhaustive scanning, a two-stage scanning scheme is proposed, including the array- and pixel-level scanning. For comparison, the greedy AS scheme is proposed, where the resulting incremental SINR expression by activating antenna pixel sequentially is derived in closed-form. Subsequently, array configuration training is extended to the wireless localization scenario. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of codeword optimization for scenarios of multi-UE communication and wireless localization.
