Hybrid Active-Passive IRS Assisted Energy-Efficient Wireless Communication

Deploying active reflecting elements at the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) increases signal amplification capability but incurs higher power consumption. Therefore, it remains a challenging and open problem to determine the optimal number of active/passive elements for maximizing energy efficiency (EE). To answer this question, we consider a hybrid active-passive IRS (H-IRS) assisted wireless communication system, where the H-IRS consists of both active and passive reflecting elements.Specifically, we study the optimization of the number of active/passive elements at the H-IRS to maximize EE. To this end, we first derive the closed-form expression for a near-optimal solution under the line-of-sight (LoS) channel case and obtain its optimal solution under the Rayleigh fading channel case. Then, an efficient algorithm is employed to obtain a high-quality sub-optimal solution for the EE maximization under the general Rician channel case. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the H-IRS for maximizing EE under different Rician factors and IRS locations.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Empowered Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Systems

Compared with traditional half-duplex wireless systems, the application of emerging full-duplex (FD) technology can potentially double the system capacity theoretically. However, conventional techniques for suppressing self-interference (SI) adopted in FD systems require exceedingly high power consumption and expensive hardware. In this paper, we consider employing an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in the proximity of an FD base station (BS) to mitigate SI for simultaneously receiving data from uplink users and transmitting information to downlink users. The objective considered is to maximize the weighted sum-rate of the system by jointly optimizing the IRS phase shifts, the BS transmit beamformers, and the transmit power of the uplink users. To visualize the role of the IRS in SI cancellation by isolating other interference, we first study a simple scenario with one downlink user and one uplink user. To address the formulated non-convex problem, a low-complexity algorithm based on successive convex approximation is proposed. For the more general case considering multiple downlink and uplink users, an efficient alternating optimization algorithm based on element-wise optimization is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate that the FD system with the proposed schemes can achieve a larger gain over the half-duplex system, and the IRS is able to achieve a balance between suppressing SI and providing beamforming gain.

Performance Analysis and Optimal Design of HARQ-IR-Aided Terahertz Communications

Terahertz (THz) communications are envisioned to be a promising technology for 6G thanks to its broad bandwidth. However, the large path loss, antenna misalignment, and atmospheric influence of THz communications severely deteriorate its reliability. To address this, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is recognized as an effective technique to ensure reliable THz communications. This paper delves into the performance analysis of HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR)-aided THz communications in the presence/absence of blockage. More specifically, the analytical expression of the outage probability of HARQ-IR-aided THz communications is derived, with which the asymptotic outage analysis is enabled to gain meaningful insights, including diversity order, power allocation gain, modulation and coding gain, etc. Then the long term average throughput (LTAT) is expressed in terms of the outage probability based on renewal theory. Moreover, to combat the blockage effects, a multi-hop HARQ-IR-aided THz communication scheme is proposed and its performance is examined. To demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme, the other two HARQ-aided schemes, i.e., Type-I HARQ and HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), are used for benchmarking in the simulations. In addition, a deep neural network (DNN) based outage evaluation framework with low computational complexity is devised to reap the benefits of using both asymptotic and simulation results in low and high outage regimes, respectively. This novel outage evaluation framework is finally employed for the optimal rate selection, which outperforms the asymptotic based optimization.

RIS-Aided MIMO Systems with Hardware Impairments: Robust Beamforming Design and Analysis

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been anticipated to be a novel cost-effective technology to improve the performance of future wireless systems. In this paper, we investigate a practical RIS-aided multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system in the presence of transceiver hardware impairments, RIS phase noise and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Joint design of the MIMO transceiver and RIS reflection matrix to minimize the total average mean-square-error (MSE) of all data streams is particularly considered. This joint design problem is non-convex and challenging to solve due to the newly considered practical imperfections. To tackle the issue, we first analyze the total average MSE by incorporating the impacts of the above system imperfections. Then, in order to handle the tightly coupled optimization variables and non-convex NP-hard constraints, an efficient iterative algorithm based on alternating optimization (AO) framework is proposed with guaranteed convergence, where each subproblem admits a closed-form optimal solution by leveraging the majorization-minimization (MM) technique. Moreover, via exploiting the special structure of the unit-modulus constraints, we propose a modified Riemannian gradient ascent (RGA) algorithm for the discrete RIS phase shift optimization. Furthermore, the optimality of the proposed algorithm is validated under line-of-sight (LoS) channel conditions, and the irreducible MSE floor effect induced by imperfections of both hardware and CSI is also revealed in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Numerical results show the superior MSE performance of our proposed algorithm over the adopted benchmark schemes, and demonstrate that increasing the number of RIS elements is not always beneficial under the above system imperfections.

Double-RIS Aided Multi-user MIMO Communications: Common Reflection Pattern and Joint Beamforming Design

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has entered the public consciousness as a promising technology for enhancing the performance of future wireless communication systems by dynamically constructing the wireless channels. In this letter, we study a double-RIS aided downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system. We investigate the mean-square-error (MSE) minimization problem by jointly optimizing the active transmit beamforming, the receive equalizer and the passive beamforming at each RIS. Different from prior works, for the sake of reducing both communication overhead and signal processing complexity, we assume that the two RISs utilize the common reflection pattern. Under this assumption, the coupling of the variables becomes tighter, thereby making the optimization problem more challenging to solve. To effectively address this issue, we propose a majorization-minimization (MM)-based alternating optimization (AO) algorithm.Numerical results show that in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, the double-RIS with common reflection pattern can achieve nearly the same performance as that with separate reflection pattern whereas the complexity is only half of the latter. Thus, our proposed design enables an effective tradeoff between the performance and the implementation complexity of the considered system.

Beam Management in Ultra-dense mmWave Network via Federated Reinforcement Learning: An Intelligent and Secure Approach

Deploying ultra-dense networks that operate on millimeter wave (mmWave) band is a promising way to address the tremendous growth on mobile data traffic. However, one key challenge of ultra-dense mmWave network (UDmmN) is beam management due to the high propagation delay, limited beam coverage as well as numerous beams and users. In this paper, a novel systematic beam control scheme is presented to tackle the beam management problem which is difficult due to the nonconvex objective function. We employ double deep Q-network (DDQN) under a federated learning (FL) framework to address the above optimization problem, and thereby fulfilling adaptive and intelligent beam management in UDmmN. In the proposed beam management scheme based on FL (BMFL), the non-rawdata aggregation can theoretically protect user privacy while reducing handoff cost. Moreover, we propose to adopt a data cleaning technique in the local model training for BMFL, with the aim to further strengthen the privacy protection of users while improving the learning convergence speed. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gain of our proposed scheme.

Joint Optimization of Active and Passive Beamforming in Multi-IRS Aided mmWave Communications

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been considered as a promising technology to alleviate the blockage effect and enhance coverage in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication. To explore the impact of IRS on the performance of mmWave communication, we investigate a multi-IRS assisted mmWave communication network and formulate a sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the active and passive beamforming and the set of IRSs for assistance. The optimization problem is intractable due to the lack of convexity of the objective function and the binary nature of the IRS selection variables. To tackle the complex non-convex problem, an alternating iterative approach is proposed. In particular, utilizing the fractional programming method to optimize the active and passive beamforming and the optimization of IRS selection is solved by enumerating. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gain of our proposed approach.

Inverse Moment Matching Based Analysis of Cooperative HARQ-IR over Time-Correlated Nakagami Fading Channels

This paper analyzes the performance of cooperative hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) and proposes a new approach of outage probability approximation for performance analysis. A general time-correlated Nakagami fading channel covering fast fading and Rayleigh fading as special cases is considered here. An efficient inverse moment matching method is proposed to approximate the outage probability in closed-form. The effect of approximation degree is theoretically analyzed to ease its selection. Moreover, diversity order of cooperative HARQ-IR is analyzed. It is proved that diversity order is irrelevant to the time correlation coefficient $ρ$ as long as $ρ<1$ and full diversity from both spatial and time domains can be achieved by cooperative HARQ-IR under time-correlated fading channels. The accuracy of the analytical results is verified by computer simulations and the results reveal that cooperative HARQ-IR scheme can benefit from high fading order and low channel time correlation. Optimal rate selection to maximize the long term average throughput given a maximum allowable outage probability is finally discussed as one application of the analytical results.

Energy-Efficient Optimization for HARQ Schemes over Time-Correlated Fading Channels

Energy efficiency of three common hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) schemes including Type I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR), is analyzed and joint power allocation and rate selection to maximize the energy efficiency is investigated in this paper. Unlike prior literature, time-correlated fading channels is considered and two widely concerned quality of service (QoS) constraints, i.e., outage and goodput constraints, are also considered in the optimization, which further differentiates this work from prior ones. Using a unified expression of asymptotic outage probabilities, optimal transmission powers and optimal rate are derived in closed-forms to maximize the energy efficiency while satisfying the QoS constraints. These closed-form solutions then enable a thorough analysis of the maximal energy efficiencies of various HARQ schemes. It is revealed that with low outage constraint, the maximal energy efficiency achieved by Type I HARQ is $\frac{1}{4\ln2}$ bits/J, while HARQ-CC and HARQ-IR can achieve the same maximal energy efficiency as $\frac{κ_\infty}{4\ln2}$ bits/J where $κ_\infty = 1.6617$. Moreover, time correlation in the fading channels has a negative impact on the energy efficiency, while large maximal allowable number of transmissions is favorable for the improvement of energy efficiency. The effectiveness of the energy-efficient optimization is verified by extensive simulations and the results also show that HARQ-CC can achieve the best tradeoff between energy efficiency and spectral efficiency among the three HARQ schemes.

Outage Probability Analysis of HARQ-Aided Terahertz Communications

Although terahertz (THz) communications can provide mobile broadband services, it usually has a large path loss and is vulnerable to antenna misalignment. This significantly degrades the reception reliability. To address this issue, the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is proposed to further enhance the reliability of THz communications. This paper provides an in-depth investigation on the outage performance of two different types of HARQ-aided THz communications, including Type-I HARQ and HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC). Moreover, the effects of both fading and stochastic antenna misalignment are considered in this paper. The exact outage probabilities of HARQ-aided THz communications are derived in closed-form, with which the asymptotic outage analysis is enabled to explore helpful insights. In particular, it is revealed that full time diversity can be achieved by using HARQ assisted schemes. Besides, the HARQ-CC-aided scheme performs better than the Type-I HARQ-aided one due to its high diversity combining gain. The analytical results are eventually validated via Monte-Carlo simulations.

Performance Analysis of MIMO-NOMA Systems with Randomly Deployed Users

This paper investigates the performance of Multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) systems with randomly deployed users, where the randomly deployed NOMA users follow Poisson point process (PPP), the spatial correlation between MIMO channels are characterized by using Kronecker model, and the composite channel model is used to capture large-scale fading as well as small-scale fading. The spatial randomness of users' distribution, the spatial correlation among antennas and large-scale fading will severally impact the system performance, but they are seldom considered in prior literature for MIMO-NOMA systems, and the consideration of all these impact factors challenges the analysis. Based on zero-forcing (ZF) detection, the exact expressions for both the average outage probability and the average goodput are derived in closed-form. Moreover, the asymptotic analyses are conducted for both high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (/small cell radius) and low SNR (/large cell radius) to gain more insightful results. In particular, the diversity order is given by $δ= {{N_r} - {M} + 1}$, the average outage probability of $k$-th nearest user to the base station follows a scaling law of $O\left({D^{α\left( {{N_r} - {M} + 1} \right) + 2k}}\right)$, the average goodput scales as $O({D^{2}})$ and $O({D^{-2}})$ as $D \to 0$ and $D \to \infty$, respectively, where $N_r$, $M$, $α$ and $D$ stand for the number of receive antennas, the total number of data streams, the path loss exponent and the cell radius, respectively. The analytical results are finally validated through the numerical analysis.

Outage Performance Analysis of Type-I HARQ Aided V2V Communications

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications under dense urban environments usually experience severe keyhole fading effect, especially for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels, which degrades the capacity and outage performance due to the rank deficiency. To avoid these, the integration of MIMO and Type-I hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is proposed to assist V2V communications in this paper. By using the Meijer G-function, the outage probability of the proposed V2V communications system is derived in closed form. With the result, meaningful insights are gained by conducting the asymptotic outage analysis. Specifically, it is revealed that full-time diversity order can be achieved, while full spatial diversity order is unreachable as compared to Type-I HARQ aided MIMO systems without keyhole effect. Moreover, we prove that the asymptotic outage probability is a monotonically increasing and convex function of the transmission rate. Finally, the analytical results are validated through extensive numerical experiments.

Analysis of HARQ-IR over Time-Correlated Rayleigh Fading Channels

In this paper, performance of hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) over Rayleigh fading channels is investigated. Different from prior analysis, time correlation in the channels is considered. Under time-correlated fading channels, the mutual information in multiple HARQ transmissions is correlated, making the analysis challenging. By using polynomial fitting technique, probability distribution function of the accumulated mutual information is derived. Three meaningful performance metrics including outage probability, average number of transmissions and long term average throughput (LTAT) are then derived in closed-forms. Moreover, diversity order of HARQ-IR is also investigated. It is proved that full diversity can be achieved by HARQ-IR, i.e., the diversity order is equal to the number of transmissions, even under time-correlated fading channels. These analytical results are verified by simulations and enable the evaluation of the impact of various system parameters on the performance. Particularly, the results unveil the negative impact of time correlation on the outage and throughput performance. The results also show that although more transmissions would improve the outage performance, they may not be beneficial to the LTAT when time correlation is high. Optimal rate design to maximize the LTAT is finally discussed and significant LTAT improvement is demonstrated.

Optimal Power Allocation for HARQ Schemes over Time-Correlated Nakagami-m Fading Channels

This paper investigates the problem of power allocation for hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) schemes over time-correlated Nakagami-m fading channels under outage constraint. The presence of time correlation complicates the power allocation problem due to the involvement of multiple correlated fading channels. Under a general time-correlated Nakagami-m fading channel with exponential correlation, outage probabilities for three widely adopted HARQ schemes, including Type I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR), are first derived. With these results, power allocation schemes are proposed to minimize the average total transmission power with guaranteed outage performance. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of our outage analysis and the effectiveness of our proposed power allocation schemes. It is shown that our proposed power allocation schemes can achieve significant power savings when compared with fixed power allocation. Moreover, under practical low outage constraint, the power efficiency is further improved when the time correlation is reduced and/or the fading order is increased.

Zero-Forcing Based Downlink Virtual MIMO-NOMA Communications in IoT Networks

To support massive connectivity and boost spectral efficiency for internet of things (IoT), a downlink scheme combining virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is proposed. All the single-antenna IoT devices in each cluster cooperate with each other to establish a virtual MIMO entity, and multiple independent data streams are requested by each cluster. NOMA is employed to superimpose all the requested data streams, and each cluster leverages zero-forcing detection to de-multiplex the input data streams. Only statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at base station to avoid the waste of the energy and bandwidth on frequent CSI estimations. The outage probability and goodput of the virtual MIMO-NOMA system are thoroughly investigated by considering Kronecker model, which embraces both the transmit and receive correlations. Furthermore, the asymptotic results facilitate not only the exploration of physical insights but also the goodput maximization. In particular, the asymptotic outage expressions provide quantitative impacts of various system parameters and enable the investigation of diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). Moreover, power allocation coefficients and/or transmission rates can be properly chosen to achieve the maximal goodput. By favor of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, the goodput maximization problems can be solved in closed-form, with which the joint power and rate selection is realized by using alternately iterating optimization.Besides, the optimization algorithms tend to allocate more power to clusters under unfavorable channel conditions and support clusters with higher transmission rate under benign channel conditions.

Achievable Diversity Order of HARQ-Aided Downlink NOMA Systems

The combination between non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is capable of realizing ultra-reliability, high throughput and many concurrent connections particularly for emerging communication systems. This paper focuses on characterizing the asymptotic scaling law of the outage probability of HARQ-aided NOMA systems with respect to the transmit power, i.e., diversity order. The analysis of diversity order is carried out for three basic types of HARQ-aided downlink NOMA systems, including Type I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR). The diversity orders of three HARQ-aided downlink NOMA systems are derived in closed-form, where an integration domain partition trick is developed to obtain the bounds of the outage probability specially for HARQ-CC and HARQ-IR-aided NOMA systems. The analytical results show that the diversity order is a decreasing step function of transmission rate, and full time diversity can only be achieved under a sufficiently low transmission rate. It is also revealed that HARQ-IR-aided NOMA systems have the largest diversity order, followed by HARQ-CC-aided and then Type I HARQ-aided NOMA systems. Additionally, the users' diversity orders follow a descending order according to their respective average channel gains. Furthermore, we expand discussions on the cases of power-efficient transmissions and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Monte Carlo simulations finally confirm our analysis.

Outage Performance and Optimal Design of MIMO-NOMA Enhanced Small Cell Networks With Imperfect Channel-State Information

This paper focuses on boosting the performance of small cell networks (SCNs) by integrating multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in consideration of imperfect channel-state information (CSI). The estimation error and the spatial randomness of base stations (BSs) are characterized by using Kronecker model and Poisson point process (PPP), respectively. The outage probabilities of MIMO-NOMA enhanced SCNs are first derived in closed-form by taking into account two grouping policies, including random grouping and distance-based grouping. It is revealed that the average outage probabilities are irrelevant to the intensity of BSs in the interference-limited regime, while the outage performance deteriorates if the intensity is sufficiently low. Besides, as the channel uncertainty lessens, the asymptotic analyses manifest that the target rates must be restricted up to a bound to achieve an arbitrarily low outage probability in the absence of the inter-cell interference. Moreover, highly correlated estimation error ameliorates the outage performance under a low quality of CSI, otherwise it behaves oppositely. Afterwards, the goodput is maximized by choosing appropriate precoding matrix, receiver filters and transmission rates. In the end, the numerical results verify our analysis and corroborate the superiority of our proposed algorithm.
