TAO Conceptual Design Report: A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

Hunting potassium geoneutrinos with liquid scintillator Cherenkov neutrino detectors

The research of geoneutrino is a new interdisciplinary subject of particle experiments and geo-science. Potassium-40 ($^\text{40}$K) decays contribute roughly 1/3 of the radiogenic heat of the Earth, but it is still missing from the experimental observation. Solar neutrino experiments with liquid scintillators have observed uranium and thorium geoneutrinos and are the most promising in the low-background neutrino detection. In this article, we present the new concept of using liquid-scintillator Cherenkov detectors to detect the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process of $^\text{40}$K geoneutrinos. Liquid-scintillator Cherenkov detectors using a slow liquid scintillator can achieve this goal with both energy and direction measurements for charged particles. Given the directionality, we can significantly suppress the dominant intrinsic background originating from solar neutrinos in conventional liquid-scintillator detectors. We simulated the solar- and geo-neutrino scatterings in the slow liquid scintillator detector, and implemented energy and directional reconstructions for the recoiling electrons. We found that $^\text{40}$K geoneutrinos can be detected with three standard deviation accuracy in a kiloton-scale detector.

Variation of the transition energies and oscillator strengths for the 3C and 3D lines of the Ne-like ions under plasma environment

We present the results of a detailed theoretical study which meets the spatial and temporal criteria of the Debye-Huckel (DH) approximation on the variation of the transition energies as well as the oscillator strengths for the ${2p^53d\ ^1P_1\rightarrow2p^6\ ^1S_0}$ (3C line) and the ${2p^53d\ ^3D_1\rightarrow2p^6\ ^1S_0}$ (3D line) transitions of the Ne-like ions subject to external plasma.\ Our study shows that the redshifts of the transition energy follow the general scaling behaviors similar to the ones for the simple H-like and He-like ions.\ Whereas the oscillator strength for the 3C line decreases, the oscillator strength for the spin-flipped 3D line increases as the strength of the outside plasma increases.\ As a result, their ratio is amplified subject to outside plasma environment.\ We further demonstrate that the plasma-induced variation between the relative strength of the 3C and 3D transitions is mainly due to the spin-dependent interactions which dictate the mixing of the $^1P_1$ component in the $^3D_1$ upper state of the 3D transition.\ In addition, we are able to find that the ratio between the relative oscillator strengths of the 3C and 3D lines in the presence of the plasma to their respective plasma-free values varies as a nearly universal function of $[(Z-9.2)DZ]^{-1.8}$, with $Z$ the nuclear charge and $D$ the Debye length.\ The results of this study should be of great help in the modeling and diagnostic of astrophysical plasmas as well as laboratory plasmas.

Slow Liquid Scintillator Candidates for MeV-scale Neutrino Experiments

Slow liquid scintillator Cherenkov detectors have been proposed as part of several future neutrino experiments because they can provide both directionality and energy measurements. This feature is expected to enhance the sensitivities for MeV-scale neutrino physics, including solar physics, the search for supernova relic neutrino, and the study of geo-sciences. In this study, the characteristics of a slow liquid scintillator were investigated, along with the light yields and decay time constants for various combinations of linear alkylbenzene (LAB), 2,5-diphenyloxazole (PPO), and 1,4-bis (2-methylstyryl)-benzene (bis-MSB). The results of our study indicated that LAB with 0.07 g/L of PPO and 13 mg/L of bis-MSB was the best candidate for an effective separation between Cherenkov and scintillation lights with a reasonably high light yield.

Toward precise neutrino measurements: An efficient energy response model for liquid scintillator detectors

Liquid scintillator detectors are playing an increasingly important role in low-energy neutrino experiments. In this article, we describe a generic energy response model of liquid scintillator detectors that provides energy estimations of sub-percent accuracy. This model fits a minimal set of physically-motivated parameters that capture the essential characteristics of scintillator response and that can naturally account for changes in scintillator over time, helping to avoid associated biases or systematic uncertainties. The model employs a one-step calculation and look-up tables, yielding an immediate estimation of energy and an efficient framework for quantifying systematic uncertainties and correlations.

Wide field-of-view and high-efficiency light concentrator

To improve light yield and energy resolution in large-volume neutrino detectors, light concentrators are often mounted on photomultiplier tubes to increase the detection efficiency of optical photons from scintillation or Cherenkov light induced by charged particles. We propose a method to optimize previous light concentrators design in order to attain a field of view of 90 degrees and a geometrical collection efficiency above 98%. This improvement could be crucial to Jinping and other future neutrino experiments whichever it is applicable.

Assay of low-background stainless steel by smelting for the neutrino experiment at Jinping

To ensure compliance with the experimental requirement for ultra-low background, in this study the radioactivity of stainless steels manufactured by smelting is thoroughly investigated. Raw materials, stage samples, and commercial samples are investigated by glow discharge mass spectrometry (GDMS) and/or with high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe) at both the ground level and/or the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Custom-made stainless steel samples are found to have radioactivity levels comparable to those in other low-background experiments. The comprehensive results regarding the radioactivity level in materials to be used in the proposed Jinping Neutrino Experiment are reported.

Design and analysis of a 1-ton prototype of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment

The Jinping Neutrino Experiment will perform an in-depth research on solar neutrinos and geo-neutrinos. Two structural options (i.e., cylindrical and spherical schemes) are proposed for the Jinping detector based on other successful underground neutrino detectors. Several key factors in the design are also discussed in detail. A 1-ton prototype of the Jinping experiment is proposed based on physics requirements. Subsequently, the structural design, installation procedure, and mechanical analysis of the neutrino detector prototype are discussed. The results show that the maximum Mises stresses on the acrylic vessel, stainless steel truss, and the tank are all lower than the design values of the strengths. The stability requirement of the stainless steel truss in the detector prototype is satisfied. Consequently, the structural scheme for the 1-ton prototype is safe and reliable.

Discovery potential for supernova relic neutrinos with slow liquid scintillator detectors

Detection of supernova relic neutrinos could provide key support for our current understanding of stellar and cosmological evolution, and precise measurements of these neutrinos could yield novel insights into the universe. In this paper, we studied the detection potential of supernova relic neutrinos using linear alkyl benzene (LAB) as a slow liquid scintillator. The linear alkyl benzene features good separation of Cherenkov and scintillation lights, thereby providing a new route for particle identification. We further addressed key issues in current experiments, including (1) the charged current background of atmospheric neutrinos in water Cherenkov detectors and (2) the neutral current background of atmospheric neutrinos in typical liquid scintillator detectors. A kiloton-scale LAB detector at Jinping with $\mathcal{O}$(10) years of data could discover supernova relic neutrinos with a sensitivity comparable to that of large-volume water Cherenkov detectors, typical liquid scintillator detectors, and liquid argon detectors.

Geoneutrinos at Jinping: Flux prediction and oscillation analysis

Geoneutrinos are electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) generated by the beta-decays of radionuclides naturally occurring inside the Earth, in particular $^{238}$U, $^{232}$Th, and $^{40}$K. Measurement of these neutrinos provides powerful constraints on the radiogenic heat of the Earth and tests on the Earth models. Since the prediction of $\barν_e$'s in geoneutrino flux is subject to neutrino oscillation effects, we performed a calculation including detailed oscillation analysis in the propagation of geoneutrinos and reactor neutrinos generated around the Earth. The expected geoneutrino signal, the reactor neutrino background rates and the systematic error budget are provided for a proposed 3-kiloton neutrino detector at the Jinping underground lab in Sichuan, China. In addition, we evaluated sensitivities for the geoneutrino flux, Th/U ratio and power of a possible fission reactor in the interior of Earth.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Determination of the total absorption peak in an electromagnetic calorimeter

A physically-motivated function was developed to accurately determine the total absorption peak in an electromagnetic calorimeter and to overcome biases present in many commonly used methods. The function is the convolution of a detector resolution function with the sum of a delta function, which represents the complete absorption of energy, and a tail function, which describes the partial absorption of energy and depends on the detector materials and structures. Its performance was tested with the simulation of three typical cases. The accuracy of the extracted peak value, resolution, and peak area was improved by an order of magnitude on average, relative to the Crystal Ball function.

Separation of Scintillation and Cherenkov Lights in Linear Alkyl Benzene

To separate scintillation and Cherenkov lights in water-based liquid scintillator detectors is a desired feature for future neutrino and proton decay researches. Linear alkyl benzene (LAB) is one important ingredient of a water-based liquid scintillator being developed. In this paper we observed a good separation of scintillation and Cherenkov lights in an LAB sample. The rising and decay times of the scintillation light of the LAB were measured to be $(7.7\pm3.0)\ \rm{ns}$ and $(36.6\pm2.4)\ \rm{ns}$, respectively, while the full width [-3$σ$, 3$σ$] of the Cherenkov light was 12 ns dominated by the time resolution of our photomultiplier tubes. The light yield of the scintillation was measured to be $(1.01\pm0.12)\times10^3\ \rm{photons}/\rm{MeV}$.

Neutrino Physics with JUNO

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purpose underground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determination of the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable of observing neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, including supernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such as nucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physics motivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for various proposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plants at 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4 sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrino spectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the six oscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from a typical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000 inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elastic scattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable information on the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrino energy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400 events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrino samples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. proton decay via the $p\to K^++\barν$ decay channel. The JUNO detector will provide a unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle and astrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest to understanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the building blocks of our Universe.

Design, characterization, and sensitivity of the supernova trigger system at Daya Bay

Providing an early warning of galactic supernova explosions from neutrino signals is important in studying supernova dynamics and neutrino physics. A dedicated supernova trigger system has been designed and installed in the data acquisition system at Daya Bay and integrated into the worldwide Supernova Early Warning System (SNEWS). Daya Bay's unique feature of eight identically-designed detectors deployed in three separate experimental halls makes the trigger system naturally robust against cosmogenic backgrounds, enabling a prompt analysis of online triggers and a tight control of the false-alert rate. The trigger system is estimated to be fully sensitive to 1987A-type supernova bursts throughout most of the Milky Way. The significant gain in sensitivity of the eight-detector configuration over a mass-equivalent single detector is also estimated. The experience of this online trigger system is applicable to future projects with spatially distributed detectors.

A Precise Calculation of Delayed Coincidence Selection Efficiency and Accidental Coincidence Rate

A model is proposed to address issues on the precise background evaluation due to the complex data structure defined by the delayed coincidence method, which is widely used in reactor electron-antineutrino oscillation experiments. In this model, the effects from the muon veto, uncorrelated random background, coincident signal and background are all studied with the analytical solutions, simplifying the estimation of the systematic uncertainties of signal efficiency and accidental background rate determined by the unstable single rate. The result of calculation is validated numerically with a number of simulation studies and is also applied and validated in the recent Daya Bay hydrogen-capture based oscillation measurement.

Simulation Study on neutrino nucleus cross section measurement in Segmented Detector at Spallation Neutron Source

Knowledge of $ν_e$-$\mathrm{Fe}/\mathrm{Pb}$ differential cross sections for $ν_e$ energy below several tens of MeV scale is believed to be crucial in understanding Supernova physics. In a segmented detector at Spallation Neutrino Source, $ν_e$ energy reconstructed from the electron range measurement is strongly affected because of both multiple scattering and electromagnetic showers occurring along the electron passage in target materials. In order to estimate the effect, a simulation study has been performed with a cube block model assuming a perfect tracking precision. The distortion of energy spectrum is observed to be proportional to the atomic number of target material. Feasibility of unfolding the distorted $ν_e$ energy spectrum is studied for both Fe and Pb cases. Evaluation of statistical accuracy attainable is therefore provided for a segmented detector.

Rare Kaon Decay From E949 At BNL: K^+ -->pi^+ nunubar

In the first year of physics run, the E949 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory has already collected $1.8\times 10^{12}$ kaons stopping in the target. Additional evidence for the rare charged kaon decay $K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$ has been observed. Combined with previous results from the E787 experiment, the branching ratio is measured to be Br($K^+\toπ^+ν\barν$)=$(1.47^{+1.30}_{-0.89})\times10^{-10}$.
