Uncovering the deformation mechanism of glasses during indentation through high-resolution X-ray scattering

Indentation experiments can be used to mimic real-life damage events of glasses that lead to surface flaws and thus lower practical strength. Conventional indentation studies often focus on the surface deformation after unloading. However, to understand the link between the surface deformation and structure, it is crucial to characterize the sub-surface deformation during the indentation process. The indentation-induced deformation, consisting of both elastic and plastic zones, is governed by the glass composition and structure, indentation and atmospheric conditions, and stress state. However, only a few experimental methods exist for characterizing the sub-surface indentation deformation mechanism during indentation. In this study, we use synchrotron X-ray nanoscattering to probe the deformation mechanism in situ during indentation of four types of oxide and oxynitride glasses with distinct structural features. This is done by measuring the variation in the position and intensity of the first sharp diffraction peak of the X-ray structure factor with a high spatial resolution down to ~100 nm. We find that the deformation zones of these glasses, which are characterized by the shape, size, and relative contribution between densification and shear flow under different indentation loads, vary with Poisson's ratio. Thus, our work provides new insights into the mechanical behavior of oxide glasses, contributing to the design of more damage-resistant glasses.

Facet Specific Electron Conduction in Pentavalent (W5+) WO3 Drives Superior Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction in (002) Plane

This article reports a concept of heat-induced topological modifications of non-layered WO 3 followed by successful synthesis of oxygen-vacant more-porous nanosheets with exposed active (002) facet. Experimental measurements and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have revealed that the photoexcited electrons are found to accumulate preferentially on (002) facet to yield enhanced electron conduction, and consequently, strengthen the reduction potential as active catalytic sites for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Owing to these beneficial properties, the more-porous nanosheets of WO 3 with (002) facet have exhibited superior performance than that of less-porous nanosheets of WO3 with (220) facet and bulk WO3 with (205) facet. This study therefore provides a new understanding of regulating physical, optical, and electronic properties through intricate atomic structure modulation of WO3, and may find widespread application in optoelectronics, sensors, and energy conversion.

Effects of deposition temperature on the mechanical and structural properties of amorphous Al-Si-O thin films prepared by RF magnetron sputtering

Aluminosilicate (Al-Si-O) thin films containing up to 31 at. % Al and 23 at. % Si were prepared by reactive RF magnetron co-sputtering. Mechanical and structural properties were measured by indentation and specular reflectance infrared spectroscopy at varying Si sputtering target power and substrate temperature in the range 100 to 500 °C. It was found that an increased substrate temperature and Al/Si ratio give denser structure and consequently higher hardness (7.4 to 9.5 GPa) and reduced elastic modulus (85 to 93 GPa) while at the same time lower crack resistance (2.6 to 0.9 N). The intensity of the infrared Si-O-Si/Al asymmetric stretching vibrations shows a linear dependence with respect to Al concentration. The Al-O-Al vibrational band (at 1050 cm-1) shifts towards higher wavenumbers with increasing Al concentration which indicates a decrease of the bond length, evidencing denser structure and higher residual stress, which is supported by the increased hardness. The same Al-O-Al vibrational band (at 1050 cm-1) shifts towards lower wavenumber with increasing substrate temperature indicating an increase in the of the average coordination number of Al.

Optical and mechanical properties of amorphous Mg-Si-O-N thin films deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering

In this work, amorphous thin films in Mg-Si-O-N system were prepared in order to investigate the dependence of optical and mechanical properties on Mg composition. Reactive RF magnetron co-sputtering from magnesium and silicon targets were used for the deposition of Mg-Si-O-N thin films. Films were deposited on float glass, silica wafers and sapphire substrates in an Ar, N2 and O2 gas mixture. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and nanoindentation were employed to characterize the composition, surface morphology, and properties of the films.
