Shallow Feature Matters for Weakly Supervised Object Localization

Weakly supervised object localization (WSOL) aims to localize objects by only utilizing image-level labels. Class activation maps (CAMs) are the commonly used features to achieve WSOL. However, previous CAM-based methods did not take full advantage of the shallow features, despite their importance for WSOL. Because shallow features are easily buried in background noise through conventional fusion. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective Shallow feature-aware Pseudo supervised Object Localization (SPOL) model for accurate WSOL, which makes the utmost of low-level features embedded in shallow layers. In practice, our SPOL model first generates the CAMs through a novel element-wise multiplication of shallow and deep feature maps, which filters the background noise and generates sharper boundaries robustly. Besides, we further propose a general class-agnostic segmentation model to achieve the accurate object mask, by only using the initial CAMs as the pseudo label without any extra annotation. Eventually, a bounding box extractor is applied to the object mask to locate the target. Experiments verify that our SPOL outperforms the state-of-the-art on both CUB-200 and ImageNet-1K benchmarks, achieving 93.44% and 67.15% (i.e., 3.93% and 2.13% improvement) Top-5 localization accuracy, respectively.

InstanceRefer: Cooperative Holistic Understanding for Visual Grounding on Point Clouds through Instance Multi-level Contextual Referring

Compared with the visual grounding on 2D images, the natural-language-guided 3D object localization on point clouds is more challenging. In this paper, we propose a new model, named InstanceRefer, to achieve a superior 3D visual grounding through the grounding-by-matching strategy. In practice, our model first predicts the target category from the language descriptions using a simple language classification model. Then, based on the category, our model sifts out a small number of instance candidates (usually less than 20) from the panoptic segmentation of point clouds. Thus, the non-trivial 3D visual grounding task has been effectively re-formulated as a simplified instance-matching problem, considering that instance-level candidates are more rational than the redundant 3D object proposals. Subsequently, for each candidate, we perform the multi-level contextual inference, i.e., referring from instance attribute perception, instance-to-instance relation perception, and instance-to-background global localization perception, respectively. Eventually, the most relevant candidate is selected and localized by ranking confidence scores, which are obtained by the cooperative holistic visual-language feature matching. Experiments confirm that our method outperforms previous state-of-the-arts on ScanRefer online benchmark and Nr3D/Sr3D datasets.

Global well-posedness for the 2D micropolar Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem

In this article, we study the Cauchy problem to the micropolar Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem without velocity dissipation in two dimension. We first prove the local well-posedness of a smooth solution, and then establish a blow up criterion in terms of the gradient of scalar temperature field. At last, we obtain the global well-posedness to the system.

High-Fidelity 3D Digital Human Head Creation from RGB-D Selfies

We present a fully automatic system that can produce high-fidelity, photo-realistic 3D digital human heads with a consumer RGB-D selfie camera. The system only needs the user to take a short selfie RGB-D video while rotating his/her head, and can produce a high quality head reconstruction in less than 30 seconds. Our main contribution is a new facial geometry modeling and reflectance synthesis procedure that significantly improves the state-of-the-art. Specifically, given the input video a two-stage frame selection procedure is first employed to select a few high-quality frames for reconstruction. Then a differentiable renderer based 3D Morphable Model (3DMM) fitting algorithm is applied to recover facial geometries from multiview RGB-D data, which takes advantages of a powerful 3DMM basis constructed with extensive data generation and perturbation. Our 3DMM has much larger expressive capacities than conventional 3DMM, allowing us to recover more accurate facial geometry using merely linear basis. For reflectance synthesis, we present a hybrid approach that combines parametric fitting and CNNs to synthesize high-resolution albedo/normal maps with realistic hair/pore/wrinkle details. Results show that our system can produce faithful 3D digital human faces with extremely realistic details. The main code and the newly constructed 3DMM basis is publicly available.

DisenHAN: Disentangled Heterogeneous Graph Attention Network for Recommendation

Heterogeneous information network has been widely used to alleviate sparsity and cold start problems in recommender systems since it can model rich context information in user-item interactions. Graph neural network is able to encode this rich context information through propagation on the graph. However, existing heterogeneous graph neural networks neglect entanglement of the latent factors stemming from different aspects. Moreover, meta paths in existing approaches are simplified as connecting paths or side information between node pairs, overlooking the rich semantic information in the paths. In this paper, we propose a novel disentangled heterogeneous graph attention network DisenHAN for top-$N$ recommendation, which learns disentangled user/item representations from different aspects in a heterogeneous information network. In particular, we use meta relations to decompose high-order connectivity between node pairs and propose a disentangled embedding propagation layer which can iteratively identify the major aspect of meta relations. Our model aggregates corresponding aspect features from each meta relation for the target user/item. With different layers of embedding propagation, DisenHAN is able to explicitly capture the collaborative filtering effect semantically. Extensive experiments on three real-world datasets show that DisenHAN consistently outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. We further demonstrate the effectiveness and interpretability of the learned disentangled representations via insightful case studies and visualization.

Weak-Instrument Robust Tests in Two-Sample Summary-Data Mendelian Randomization

Mendelian randomization (MR) has been a popular method in genetic epidemiology to estimate the effect of an exposure on an outcome using genetic variants as instrumental variables (IV), with two-sample summary-data MR being the most popular. Unfortunately, instruments in MR studies are often weakly associated with the exposure, which can bias effect estimates and inflate Type I errors. In this work, we propose test statistics that are robust under weak instrument asymptotics by extending the Anderson-Rubin, Kleibergen, and the conditional likelihood ratio test in econometrics to two-sample summary-data MR. We also use the proposed Anderson-Rubin test to develop a point estimator and to detect invalid instruments. We conclude with a simulation and an empirical study and show that the proposed tests control size and have better power than existing methods with weak instruments.

Efficient Fizeau Drag from Dirac electrons in monolayer graphene

Fizeau demonstrated in 1850 that the speed of light can be modified when it is propagating in moving media. Can we achieve such control of the light speed efficiently with a fast-moving electron media by passing electrical current? Because the strong electromagnetic coupling between the electron and light leads to the collective excitation of plasmon polaritons, it will manifest as the plasmonic Doppler effect. Experimental observation of the plasmonic Doppler effect in electronic system has been challenge because the plasmon propagation speed is much faster than the electron drift velocity in conventional noble metals. Here, we report direct observation of Fizeau drag of plasmon polaritons in strongly biased graphene by exploiting the high electron mobility and the slow plasmon propagation of massless Dirac electrons. The large bias current in graphene creates a fast drifting Dirac electron medium hosting the plasmon polariton. It results in nonreciprocal plasmon propagation, where plasmons moving with the drifting electron media propagate at an enhanced speed. We measure the Doppler-shifted plasmon wavelength using a cryogenic near-field infrared nanoscopy, which directly images the plasmon polariton mode in the biased graphene at low temperature. We observe a plasmon wavelength difference up to 3.6% between plasmon moving along and against the drifting electron media. Our findings on the plasmonic Doppler effect open new opportunities for electrical control of non-reciprocal surface plasmon polaritons in nonequilibrium systems.

EBM-Fold: Fully-Differentiable Protein Folding Powered by Energy-based Models

Accurate protein structure prediction from amino-acid sequences is critical to better understanding the protein function. Recent advances in this area largely benefit from more precise inter-residue distance and orientation predictions, powered by deep neural networks. However, the structure optimization procedure is still dominated by traditional tools, e.g. Rosetta, where the structure is solved via minimizing a pre-defined statistical energy function (with optional prediction-based restraints). Such energy function may not be optimal in formulating the whole conformation space of proteins. In this paper, we propose a fully-differentiable approach for protein structure optimization, guided by a data-driven generative network. This network is trained in a denoising manner, attempting to predict the correction signal from corrupted distance matrices between Ca atoms. Once the network is well trained, Langevin dynamics based sampling is adopted to gradually optimize structures from random initialization. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our EBM-Fold approach can efficiently produce high-quality decoys, compared against traditional Rosetta-based structure optimization routines.

tFold-TR: Combining Deep Learning Enhanced Hybrid Potential Energy for Template-Based Modeling Structure Refinement

Protein structure prediction has been a grand challenge for over 50 years, owing to its broad scientific and application interests. There are two primary types of modeling algorithms, template-free modeling and template-based modeling. The latter one is suitable for easy prediction tasks and is widely adopted in computer-aided drug discoveries for drug design and screening. Although it has been several decades since its first edition, the current template-based modeling approach suffers from two critical problems: 1) there are many missing regions in the template-query sequence alignment, and 2) the accuracy of the distance pairs from different regions of the template varies, and this information is not well introduced into the modeling. To solve these two problems, we propose a structural optimization process based on template modeling, introducing two neural network models to predict the distance information of the missing regions and the accuracy of the distance pairs of different regions in the template modeling structure. The predicted distances and residue pairwise-specific deviations are incorporated into the potential energy function for structural optimization, which significantly improves the qualities of the original template modeling decoys.

Design Study of APSU Type Hybrid MBA Lattice for Mid Energy DLSR

In recent years, a new generation of storage ring based light sources, known as diffraction limited storage rings (DLSRs), whose emittance approaches the diffraction limit for the range of X ray wavelengths of interest to the scientific community, has garnered significant attention worldwide. Researchers have begun to design and build DLSRs. Among various DLSR proposals, the hybrid multibend achromat (HMBA) lattice enables sextupole strengths to be maintained at a reasonable level when minimizing the emittance; hence, it has been adopted in many DLSR designs. Based on the H7BA lattice, the design of the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade Project (APSU) can effectively reduce emittance by replacing six quadrupoles with antibends. Herein, we discuss the feasibility of designing an APSU type HMBA lattice for the Southern Advanced Photon Source, a mid energy DLSR light source with ultralow emittance that has been proposed to be built adjacent to the China Spallation Neutron Source. Both linear and nonlinear dynamics are optimized to obtain a detailed design of this type of lattice. The emittance is minimized, while a sufficiently large dynamic aperture (DA) and momentum acceptance (MA) are maintained. A design comprising 36 APSU type H7BAs, with an energy of 3 GeV and a circumference of 972 m, is achieved. The horizontal natural emittance is 20 pm rad, with a horizontal DA of 5.8 mm, a vertical DA of 4.5 mm, and an MA of 4%, as well as a long longitudinal damping time of 120 ms. Subsequently, a few modifications are performed based on the APSU type lattice to reduce the longitudinal damping time from 120 to 44 ms while maintaining other performance parameters at the same level.

An Online Scheduling Algorithm for Energy Minimization in Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing Networks

The integration of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) and Wireless Power Transfer (WPT), which is usually referred to as Wireless Powered Mobile Edge Computing (WP-MEC), has been recognized as a promising technique to enhance the lifetime and computation capacity of wireless devices (WDs). Compared to the conventional battery-powered MEC networks, WP-MEC brings new challenges to the computation scheduling problem because we have to jointly optimize the resource allocation in WPT and computation offloading. In this paper, we consider the energy minimization problem for WP-MEC networks with multiple WDs and multiple access points. We design an online algorithm by transforming the original problem into a series of deterministic optimization problems based on the Lyapunov optimization theory. To reduce the time complexity of our algorithm, the optimization problem is relaxed and decomposed into several independent subproblems. After solving each subproblem, we adjust the computed values of variables to obtain a feasible solution. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed algorithm.

Public Transport Planning: When Transit Network Connectivity Meets Commuting Demand

In this paper, we make a first attempt to incorporate both commuting demand and transit network connectivity in bus route planning (CT-Bus), and formulate it as a constrained optimization problem: planning a new bus route with k edges over an existing transit network without building new bus stops to maximize a linear aggregation of commuting demand and connectivity of the transit network. We prove the NP-hardness of CT-Bus and propose an expansion-based greedy algorithm that iteratively scans potential candidate paths in the network. To boost the efficiency of computing the connectivity of new networks with candidate paths, we convert it to a matrix trace estimation problem and employ a Lanczos method to estimate the natural connectivity of the transit network with a guaranteed error bound. Furthermore, we derive upper bounds on the objective values and use them to greedily select candidates for expansion. Our experiments conducted on real-world transit networks in New York City and Chicago verify the efficiency, effectiveness, and scalability of our algorithms.

Radiation-tolerant high-entropy alloys via interstitial-solute-induced chemical heterogeneities

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) composed of multiple principal elements have been shown to offer improved radiation resistance over their elemental or dilute-solution counterparts. Using NiCoFeCrMn HEA as a model, here we introduce carbon and nitrogen interstitial alloying elements to impart chemical heterogeneities in the form of the local chemical order (LCO) and associated compositional variations. Density functional theory simulations predict chemical short-range order (CSRO) (nearest neighbors and the next couple of atomic shells) surrounding C and N, due to the chemical affinity of C with (Co, Fe) and N with (Cr, Mn). Atomic-resolution chemical mapping of the elemental distribution confirms marked compositional variations well beyond statistical fluctuations. Ni+ irradiation experiments at elevated temperatures demonstrate a remarkable reduction in void swelling by at least one order of magnitude compared to the base HEA without C and N alloying. The underlying mechanism is that the interstitial-solute-induced chemical heterogeneities roughen the lattice as well as the energy landscape, impeding the movements of, and constraining the path lanes for, the normally fast-moving self-interstitials and their clusters. The irradiation-produced interstitials and vacancies therefore recombine more readily, delaying void formation. Our findings thus open a promising avenue towards highly radiation-tolerant alloys.

Field-effect at electrical contacts to two-dimensional materials

The inferior electrical contact to two-dimensional (2D) materials is a critical challenge for their application in post-silicon very large-scale integrated circuits. Electrical contacts were generally related to their resistive effect, quantified as contact resistance. With a systematic investigation, this work demonstrates a capacitive metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) field-effect at the electrical contacts to 2D materials: the field-effect depletes or accumulates charge carriers, redistributes the voltage potential, and give rise to abnormal current saturation and nonlinearity. On the one hand, the current saturation hinders the devices' driving ability, which can be eliminated with carefully engineered contact configurations. On the other hand, by introducing the nonlinearity to monolithic analog artificial neural network circuits, the circuits' perception ability can be significantly enhanced, as evidenced using a COVID-19 critical illness prediction model. This work provides a comprehension of the field-effect at the electrical contacts to 2D materials, which is fundamental to the design, simulation, and fabrication of electronics based on 2D material.

Study on the anti-correlated painting injection scheme for the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron of the China Spallation Neutron Source

In the rapid cycling synchrotron of the China Spallation Neutron Source, the anti-correlated painting was adopted for the design scheme of the injection system. In the beam commissioning, with the optimization of the anti-correlated painting, the injection beam loss has been well controlled and the injection efficiency has exceeded 99%. Combined with other aspects of adjustments, the beam power on the target has reached 50 kW smoothly. In this paper, we have studied the injection optimization in the beam commissioning. Compared to the simulation results of the design scheme, the transverse beam distribution, transverse coupling effect and beam loss of the anti-correlated painting in the beam commissioning are somewhat different. Through the machine studies, we have carefully analyzed these differences and studied their reasons.

On the Efficiency of K-Means Clustering: Evaluation, Optimization, and Algorithm Selection

This paper presents a thorough evaluation of the existing methods that accelerate Lloyd's algorithm for fast k-means clustering. To do so, we analyze the pruning mechanisms of existing methods, and summarize their common pipeline into a unified evaluation framework UniK. UniK embraces a class of well-known methods and enables a fine-grained performance breakdown. Within UniK, we thoroughly evaluate the pros and cons of existing methods using multiple performance metrics on a number of datasets. Furthermore, we derive an optimized algorithm over UniK, which effectively hybridizes multiple existing methods for more aggressive pruning. To take this further, we investigate whether the most efficient method for a given clustering task can be automatically selected by machine learning, to benefit practitioners and researchers.

Peer Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing with Worst-Case Response Time Guarantees

Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a new paradigm that provides cloud computing services at the edge of networks. To achieve better performance with limited computing resources, peer offloading between cooperative edge servers (e.g. MEC- enabled base stations) has been proposed as an effective technique to handle bursty and spatially imbalanced arrival of computation tasks. While various performance metrics of peer offloading policies have been considered in the literatures, the worst-case response time, a common Quality of Service(QoS) requirement in real-time applications, yet receives much less attention. To fill the gap, we formulate the peer offloading problem based on a stochastic arrival model and propose two online algorithms for cases with and without prior knowledge of task arrival rate. Our goal is to maximize the utility function of time-average throughput under constraints of energy consumption and worst-case response time. Both theoretical analysis and numerical results show that our algorithms are able to produce close to optimal performance.
