Label-Driven Reconstruction for Domain Adaptation in Semantic Segmentation

Unsupervised domain adaptation enables to alleviate the need for pixel-wise annotation in the semantic segmentation. One of the most common strategies is to translate images from the source domain to the target domain and then align their marginal distributions in the feature space using adversarial learning. However, source-to-target translation enlarges the bias in translated images and introduces extra computations, owing to the dominant data size of the source domain. Furthermore, consistency of the joint distribution in source and target domains cannot be guaranteed through global feature alignment. Here, we present an innovative framework, designed to mitigate the image translation bias and align cross-domain features with the same category. This is achieved by 1) performing the target-to-source translation and 2) reconstructing both source and target images from their predicted labels. Extensive experiments on adapting from synthetic to real urban scene understanding demonstrate that our framework competes favorably against existing state-of-the-art methods.

Detecting and repairing arbitrage in traded option prices

Option price data are used as inputs for model calibration, risk-neutral density estimation and many other financial applications. The presence of arbitrage in option price data can lead to poor performance or even failure of these tasks, making pre-processing of the data to eliminate arbitrage necessary. Most attention in the relevant literature has been devoted to arbitrage-free smoothing and filtering (i.e. removing) of data. In contrast to smoothing, which typically changes nearly all data, or filtering, which truncates data, we propose to repair data by only necessary and minimal changes. We formulate the data repair as a linear programming (LP) problem, where the no-arbitrage relations are constraints, and the objective is to minimise prices' changes within their bid and ask price bounds. Through empirical studies, we show that the proposed arbitrage repair method gives sparse perturbations on data, and is fast when applied to real world large-scale problems due to the LP formulation. In addition, we show that removing arbitrage from prices data by our repair method can improve model calibration with enhanced robustness and reduced calibration error.

Task-agnostic Temporally Consistent Facial Video Editing

Recent research has witnessed the advances in facial image editing tasks. For video editing, however, previous methods either simply apply transformations frame by frame or utilize multiple frames in a concatenated or iterative fashion, which leads to noticeable visual flickers. In addition, these methods are confined to dealing with one specific task at a time without any extensibility. In this paper, we propose a task-agnostic temporally consistent facial video editing framework. Based on a 3D reconstruction model, our framework is designed to handle several editing tasks in a more unified and disentangled manner. The core design includes a dynamic training sample selection mechanism and a novel 3D temporal loss constraint that fully exploits both image and video datasets and enforces temporal consistency. Compared with the state-of-the-art facial image editing methods, our framework generates video portraits that are more photo-realistic and temporally smooth.

mr2NST: Multi-Resolution and Multi-Reference Neural Style Transfer for Mammography

Computer-aided diagnosis with deep learning techniques has been shown to be helpful for the diagnosis of the mammography in many clinical studies. However, the image styles of different vendors are very distinctive, and there may exist domain gap among different vendors that could potentially compromise the universal applicability of one deep learning model. In this study, we explicitly address style variety issue with the proposed multi-resolution and multi-reference neural style transfer (mr2NST) network. The mr2NST can normalize the styles from different vendors to the same style baseline with very high resolution. We illustrate that the image quality of the transferred images is comparable to the quality of original images of the target domain (vendor) in terms of NIMA scores. Meanwhile, the mr2NST results are also shown to be helpful for the lesion detection in mammograms.

PointASNL: Robust Point Clouds Processing using Nonlocal Neural Networks with Adaptive Sampling

Raw point clouds data inevitably contains outliers or noise through acquisition from 3D sensors or reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel end-to-end network for robust point clouds processing, named PointASNL, which can deal with point clouds with noise effectively. The key component in our approach is the adaptive sampling (AS) module. It first re-weights the neighbors around the initial sampled points from farthest point sampling (FPS), and then adaptively adjusts the sampled points beyond the entire point cloud. Our AS module can not only benefit the feature learning of point clouds, but also ease the biased effect of outliers. To further capture the neighbor and long-range dependencies of the sampled point, we proposed a local-nonlocal (L-NL) module inspired by the nonlocal operation. Such L-NL module enables the learning process insensitive to noise. Extensive experiments verify the robustness and superiority of our approach in point clouds processing tasks regardless of synthesis data, indoor data, and outdoor data with or without noise. Specifically, PointASNL achieves state-of-the-art robust performance for classification and segmentation tasks on all datasets, and significantly outperforms previous methods on real-world outdoor SemanticKITTI dataset with considerate noise. Our code is released through https://github.com/yanx27/PointASNL.

ForkBase: Immutable, Tamper-evident Storage Substrate for Branchable Applications

Data collaboration activities typically require systematic or protocol-based coordination to be scalable. Git, an effective enabler for collaborative coding, has been attested for its success in countless projects around the world. Hence, applying the Git philosophy to general data collaboration beyond coding is motivating. We call it Git for data. However, the original Git design handles data at the file granule, which is considered too coarse-grained for many database applications. We argue that Git for data should be co-designed with database systems. To this end, we developed ForkBase to make Git for data practical. ForkBase is a distributed, immutable storage system designed for data version management and data collaborative operation. In this demonstration, we show how ForkBase can greatly facilitate collaborative data management and how its novel data deduplication technique can improve storage efficiency for archiving massive data versions.

Analysis of Indexing Structures for Immutable Data

In emerging applications such as blockchains and collaborative data analytics, there are strong demands for data immutability, multi-version accesses, and tamper-evident controls. This leads to three new index structures for immutable data, namely Merkle Patricia Trie (MPT), Merkle Bucket Tree (MBT), and Pattern-Oriented-Split Tree (POS-Tree). Although these structures have been adopted in real applications, there is no systematic evaluation of their pros and cons in the literature. This makes it difficult for practitioners to choose the right index structure for their applications, as there is only a limited understanding of the characteristics of each index. To alleviate the above deficiency, we present a comprehensive analysis of the existing index structures for immutable data, evaluating both their asymptotic and empirical performance. Specifically, we show that MPT, MBT, and POS-Tree are all instances of a recently proposed framework, dubbed \my{Structurally Invariant and Reusable Indexes (SIRI)}. We propose to evaluate the SIRI instances based on five essential metrics: their efficiency for four index operations (i.e., lookup, update, comparison, and merge), as well as their \my{deduplication ratios} (i.e., the size of the index with deduplication over the size without deduplication). We establish the worst-case guarantees of each index in terms of these five metrics, and we experimentally evaluate all indexes in a large variety of settings. Based on our theoretical and empirical analysis, we conclude that POS-Tree is a favorable choice for indexing immutable data.

Re-balancing Variational Autoencoder Loss for Molecule Sequence Generation

Molecule generation is to design new molecules with specific chemical properties and further to optimize the desired chemical properties. Following previous work, we encode molecules into continuous vectors in the latent space and then decode the vectors into molecules under the variational autoencoder (VAE) framework. We investigate the posterior collapse problem of current RNN-based VAEs for molecule sequence generation. For the first time, we find that underestimated reconstruction loss leads to posterior collapse, and provide both theoretical and experimental evidence. We propose an effective and efficient solution to fix the problem and avoid posterior collapse. Without bells and whistles, our method achieves SOTA reconstruction accuracy and competitive validity on the ZINC 250K dataset. When generating 10,000 unique valid SMILES from random prior sampling, it costs JT-VAE1450s while our method only needs 9s. Our implementation is at https://github.com/chaoyan1037/Re-balanced-VAE.

Theoretical Analysis of Double Differential Cross Section of Proton, Deuteron and Triton for $p+^7$Li Reaction at 14 MeV

Based on the statistical theory of light nucleus reactions (STLN), the description of the complicated emission processes of proton and light composite charged particles are further improved through considering the effects of Coulomb barriers both in incident and different outgoing reaction channels. And the analysis of the reaction channels including the sequential and simultaneous emission processes for $p + ^7$Li reaction is performed in detail. So the partial spectra of all of outgoing particles are also obtained for different reaction processes. The calculated double differential cross sections of total outgoing proton, deuteron and triton at $E_p = 14$ MeV agree well with the available experimental data for different outgoing angles. The ENDF-6 formatted data, which includes all of the reaction cross sections, elastic angular distributions, double differential cross sections of nucleon and light composite charged particles for $p + ^7$Li reaction, are also obtained by PUNF code.

Emergent ballistic transport of Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension

The degenerate Bose-Fermi (BF) mixtures in one dimension present a novel realization of two decoupled Luttinger liquids with bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom at low temperatures. However, the transport properties of such decoupled Luttinger liquids of charges have not yet been studied. Here we apply generalized hydrodynamics to study the transport properties of one-dimensional (1D) BF mixtures with delta-function interactions. The initial state is set up as the semi-infinite halves of two 1D BF mixtures with different temperatures, joined together at the time $t=0$ and the junction point $x=0$. Using the Bethe ansatz solution, we first rigorously prove the existence of conserved charges for both the bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom, preserving the Euler-type continuity equations. We then analytically obtain the distributions of the densities and currents of the local conserved quantities which solely depend on the ratio $ξ=x/t$. The left and right moving quasiparticle excitations of the two halves form multiple segmented light-cone hydrodynamics that display ballistic transport of the conserved charge densities and currents in different degrees of freedom. Our analytical results provide a deep understanding of the quantum transport of multi-component Luttinger liquids in quantum systems with both bosonic and fermionic statistics.

Residual orbit of BC bump for CSNS/RCS

In a beam cycle, there is a chicane bump (BC bump) in the injection region of China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS). It is a core part of the injection system and the important guarantee that the Linac beam injecting into the rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). During the beam commissioning, the residual orbit of BC bump, i.e. the closedorbit distortion (COD) due to the imperfect BC bump, was an important problem which can affect the orbit correction and beam loss control of the RCS. In this paper, a method to measure the residual orbit of BC bump was studied and given. By using the three auxiliary powers of BC magnets, a method to correct the residual orbit of BC bump was developed. The numerical simulation results showed that the measurement and correction methods had worked well and they can be applied to the beam commissioning of CSNS/RCS. The measurement results in the machine study showed that the residual orbit of BC bump is not large and can be corrected by the three auxiliary powers of BC magnets.

Two dimensional silicon chalcogenides with high carrier mobility for photocatalytic water splitting

Highly-efficient water splitting based on solar energy is one of the most attractive research focuses in the energy field. Searching for more candidate photocatalysts that can work under visible-light irradiation are highly demanded. Herein, using first principle calculations based on density functional theory, we predict that the two dimensional silicon chalcogenides, i.e. SiX (X=S, Se, Te) monolayers, as semiconductors with 2.43 eV~3.00 eV band gaps, exhibit favorable band edge positions for photocatalytic water splitting. The optical adsorption spectra demonstrate that the SiX monolayers have pronounced optical absorption in the visible light region. Moreover, the band gaps and band edge positions of silicon chalcogenides monolayers can be tuned by applying biaxial strain or increasing the number of layers, in order to better fit the redox potentials of water. The combined novel electronic, high carrier mobility, and optical properties render the two dimensional SiX a promising photocatalyst for water splitting.

The effect of air exposure on SEY and surface composition of laser treated copper applied in accelerators

In this paper, the effect of air exposure and acetone cleaning on the secondary electron yield (SEY) of laser treated copper were investigated and discussed. The SEY of laser treated copper samples after acetone cleaning and air exposure were measured. After 10 to 21 months air exposure, the maximum SEY increased by about 11%~20%. Furthermore, changes of carbon, copper, and oxygen chemistry states from sample surface after acetone and air exposure were studied by means of XPS. The XPS results show that the concentration of Cu decreased by about 61%~70% after acetone cleaning and decreased by a further 36%~70% after 10 to 21 months air exposure. Moreover, the XPS measurement reflects the significant increase of the total percentages of C and O after acetone cleaning, and further increase after 10 to 21 months air exposure. The increase of SEY is explained in terms of the introduction of impurities, such as oxide, carbide etc.

PANDA: Facilitating Usable AI Development

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have created a general perception that AI could be used to solve complex problems, and in some situations over-hyped as a tool that can be so easily used. Unfortunately, the barrier to realization of mass adoption of AI on various business domains is too high because most domain experts have no background in AI. Developing AI applications involves multiple phases, namely data preparation, application modeling, and product deployment. The effort of AI research has been spent mostly on new AI models (in the model training stage) to improve the performance of benchmark tasks such as image recognition. Many other factors such as usability, efficiency and security of AI have not been well addressed, and therefore form a barrier to democratizing AI. Further, for many real world applications such as healthcare and autonomous driving, learning via huge amounts of possibility exploration is not feasible since humans are involved. In many complex applications such as healthcare, subject matter experts (e.g. Clinicians) are the ones who appreciate the importance of features that affect health, and their knowledge together with existing knowledge bases are critical to the end results. In this paper, we take a new perspective on developing AI solutions, and present a solution for making AI usable. We hope that this resolution will enable all subject matter experts (eg. Clinicians) to exploit AI like data scientists.

Rafiki: Machine Learning as an Analytics Service System

Big data analytics is gaining massive momentum in the last few years. Applying machine learning models to big data has become an implicit requirement or an expectation for most analysis tasks, especially on high-stakes applications.Typical applications include sentiment analysis against reviews for analyzing on-line products, image classification in food logging applications for monitoring user's daily intake and stock movement prediction. Extending traditional database systems to support the above analysis is intriguing but challenging. First, it is almost impossible to implement all machine learning models in the database engines. Second, expertise knowledge is required to optimize the training and inference procedures in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, which imposes heavy burden on the system users. In this paper, we develop and present a system, called Rafiki, to provide the training and inference service of machine learning models, and facilitate complex analytics on top of cloud platforms. Rafiki provides distributed hyper-parameter tuning for the training service, and online ensemble modeling for the inference service which trades off between latency and accuracy. Experimental results confirm the efficiency, effectiveness, scalability and usability of Rafiki.

The compensation for the edge focusing of chicane bump magnets by harmonic injection in CSNS/RCS

In the Rapid Cycling Synchrotron(RCS) of China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS), transverse painting injection is employed to suppress the space-charge effects. The beta-beating caused by edge focusing of the injection bump magnets leads to tune shift and shrinkage of the acceptance, which may result in additional beam loss. In RCS, the main quadrupoles are excited by White resonant power supplies, and the exciting current cannot be arbitrarily programed. Generally, this kind of perturbation could be corrected by trim-quadrupole, however, we don't have trim-quadrupole in CSNS/RCS. A new method based on the harmonic injection is firstly introduced to compensate the beta-beating caused by edge focusing of the chicane bump magnets at RCS. In this paper, the principle and feasibility of compensation scheme were presented. The simulation study was done on the application of the new method to the CSNS/RCS, and the results show the validity and effectiveness of the method.

Injection orbit matching for CSNS/RCS

The Rapid Cycling Synchrotron(RCS) of China Spallation Neutron Source(CSNS) employs painting injection to achieve uniform beam distribution and suppress space-charge effects. In the painting injection, the mismatch between the injection beam orbit and circulating orbit could make the non-uniformity of beam distribution and emittance growth, which may lead to beam loss. To match the injection beam orbit and the circulating beam orbit, it is necessary to identify the orbit of injection beam relative to the circulating orbit in the injection point. However, it's hard to measure this relative injection orbit directly. Theoretically, the relative injection beam orbit can be deduced by measuring the turn-by-turn beam position of a single turn injection beam. However, the intensity of single turn injected beam is too low to be measured with sufficient signal-noise ratio by using beam position monitor(BPM). In this paper, two effective methods based on multi-turn injection and turn-by-turn BPM are given to perform the match between the injection and the circulating beam orbit. The simulation results and application in the beam commissioning of CSNS/RCS show the validity of the methods.
