Adaptive Wireless Image Semantic Transmission and Over-The-Air Testing

Semantic communication has undergone considerable evolution due to the recent rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), significantly enhancing both communication robustness and efficiency. Despite these advancements, most current semantic communication methods for image transmission pay little attention to the differing importance of objects and backgrounds in images. To address this issue, we propose a novel scheme named ASCViT-JSCC, which utilizes vision transformers (ViTs) integrated with an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. This scheme adaptively allocates bandwidth for objects and backgrounds in images according to the importance order of different parts determined by object detection of you only look once version 5 (YOLOv5) and feature points detection of scale invariant feature transform (SIFT). Furthermore, the proposed scheme adheres to digital modulation standards by incorporating quantization modules. We validate this approach through an over-the-air (OTA) testbed named intelligent communication prototype validation platform (ICP) based on a software-defined radio (SDR) and NVIDIA embedded kits. Our findings from both simulations and practical measurements show that ASCViT-JSCC significantly preserves objects in images and enhances reconstruction quality compared to existing methods.

Robust Model Aggregation for Heterogeneous Federated Learning: Analysis and Optimizations

Conventional synchronous federated learning (SFL) frameworks suffer from performance degradation in heterogeneous systems due to imbalanced local data size and diverse computing power on the client side. To address this problem, asynchronous FL (AFL) and semi-asynchronous FL have been proposed to recover the performance loss by allowing asynchronous aggregation. However, asynchronous aggregation incurs a new problem of inconsistency between local updates and global updates. Motivated by the issues of conventional SFL and AFL, we first propose a time-driven SFL (T-SFL) framework for heterogeneous systems. The core idea of T-SFL is that the server aggregates the models from different clients, each with varying numbers of iterations, at regular time intervals. To evaluate the learning performance of T-SFL, we provide an upper bound on the global loss function. Further, we optimize the aggregation weights to minimize the developed upper bound. Then, we develop a discriminative model selection (DMS) algorithm that removes local models from clients whose number of iterations falls below a predetermined threshold. In particular, this algorithm ensures that each client's aggregation weight accurately reflects its true contribution to the global model update, thereby improving the efficiency and robustness of the system. To validate the effectiveness of T-SFL with the DMS algorithm, we conduct extensive experiments using several popular datasets including MNIST, Cifar-10, Fashion-MNIST, and SVHN. The experimental results demonstrate that T-SFL with the DMS algorithm can reduce the latency of conventional SFL by 50\%, while achieving an average 3\% improvement in learning accuracy over state-of-the-art AFL algorithms.

Quantum simulation of the Fokker-Planck equation via Schrodingerization

This paper studies a quantum simulation technique for solving the Fokker-Planck equation. Traditional semi-discretization methods often fail to preserve the underlying Hamiltonian dynamics and may even modify the Hamiltonian structure, particularly when incorporating boundary conditions. We address this challenge by employing the Schrodingerization method-it converts any linear partial and ordinary differential equation with non-Hermitian dynamics into systems of Schrodinger-type equations. We explore the application in two distinct forms of the Fokker-Planck equation. For the conservation form, we show that the semi-discretization-based Schrodingerization is preferable, especially when dealing with non-periodic boundary conditions. Additionally, we analyze the Schrodingerization approach for unstable systems that possess positive eigenvalues in the real part of the coefficient matrix or differential operator. Our analysis reveals that the direct use of Schrodingerization has the same effect as a stabilization procedure. For the heat equation form, we propose a quantum simulation procedure based on the time-splitting technique. We discuss the relationship between operator splitting in the Schrodingerization method and its application directly to the original problem, illustrating how the Schrodingerization method accurately reproduces the time-splitting solutions at each step. Furthermore, we explore finite difference discretizations of the heat equation form using shift operators. Utilizing Fourier bases, we diagonalize the shift operators, enabling efficient simulation in the frequency space. Providing additional guidance on implementing the diagonal unitary operators, we conduct a comparative analysis between diagonalizations in the Bell and the Fourier bases, and show that the former generally exhibits greater efficiency than the latter.

Semantic Satellite Communications Based on Generative Foundation Model

Satellite communications can provide massive connections and seamless coverage, but they also face several challenges, such as rain attenuation, long propagation delays, and co-channel interference. To improve transmission efficiency and address severe scenarios, semantic communication has become a popular choice, particularly when equipped with foundation models (FMs). In this study, we introduce an FM-based semantic satellite communication framework, termed FMSAT. This framework leverages FM-based segmentation and reconstruction to significantly reduce bandwidth requirements and accurately recover semantic features under high noise and interference. Considering the high speed of satellites, an adaptive encoder-decoder is proposed to protect important features and avoid frequent retransmissions. Meanwhile, a well-received image can provide a reference for repairing damaged images under sudden attenuation. Since acknowledgment feedback is subject to long propagation delays when retransmission is unavoidable, a novel error detection method is proposed to roughly detect semantic errors at the regenerative satellite. With the proposed detectors at both the satellite and the gateway, the quality of the received images can be ensured. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly reduce bandwidth requirements, adapt to complex satellite scenarios, and protect semantic information with an acceptable transmission delay.

Fourier Transform-based Wavenumber Domain 3D Imaging in RIS-aided Communication Systems

Radio imaging is rapidly gaining prominence in the design of future communication systems, with the potential to utilize reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as imaging apertures. Although the sparsity of targets in three-dimensional (3D) space has led most research to adopt compressed sensing (CS)-based imaging algorithms, these often require substantial computational and memory burdens. Drawing inspiration from conventional Fourier transform (FT)-based imaging methods, our research seeks to accelerate radio imaging in RIS-aided communication systems. To begin, we introduce a two-stage wavenumber domain 3D imaging technique: first, we modify RIS phase shifts to recover the equivalent channel response from the user equipment to the RIS array, subsequently employing traditional FT-based wavenumber domain methods to produce target images. We also determine the diffraction resolution limits of the system through k-space analysis, taking into account factors including system bandwidth, transmission direction, operating frequency, and the angle subtended by the RIS. Addressing the challenge of limited pilots in communication systems, we unveil an innovative algorithm that merges the strengths of both FT- and CS-based techniques by substituting the expansive sensing matrix with FT-based operators. Our simulation outcomes confirm that our proposed FT-based methods achieve high-quality images while demanding few time, memory, and communication resources.

A Tutorial on Near-Field XL-MIMO Communications Towards 6G

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology for the sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks. By significantly boosting the antenna number or size to at least an order of magnitude beyond current massive MIMO systems, XL-MIMO is expected to unprecedentedly enhance the spectral efficiency and spatial resolution for wireless communication. The evolution from massive MIMO to XL-MIMO is not simply an increase in the array size, but faces new design challenges, in terms of near-field channel modelling, performance analysis, channel estimation, and practical implementation. In this article, we give a comprehensive tutorial overview on near-field XL-MIMO communications, aiming to provide useful guidance for tackling the above challenges. First, the basic near-field modelling for XL-MIMO is established, by considering the new characteristics of non-uniform spherical wave (NUSW) and spatial non-stationarity. Next, based on the near-field modelling, the performance analysis of XL-MIMO is presented, including the near-field signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scaling laws, beam focusing pattern, achievable rate, and degrees-of-freedom (DoF). Furthermore, various XL-MIMO design issues such as near-field beam codebook, beam training, channel estimation, and delay alignment modulation (DAM) transmission are elaborated. Finally, we point out promising directions to inspire future research on near-field XL-MIMO communications.

Random ISAC Signals Deserve Dedicated Precoding

Radar systems typically employ well-designed deterministic signals for target sensing, while integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems have to adopt random signals to convey useful information. This paper analyzes the sensing and ISAC performance relying on random signaling in a multi-antenna system. Towards this end, we define a new sensing performance metric, namely, ergodic linear minimum mean square error (ELMMSE), which characterizes the estimation error averaged over random ISAC signals. Then, we investigate a data-dependent precoding (DDP) scheme to minimize the ELMMSE in sensing-only scenarios, which attains the optimized performance at the cost of high implementation overhead. To reduce the cost, we present an alternative data-independent precoding (DIP) scheme by stochastic gradient projection (SGP). Moreover, we shed light on the optimal structures of both sensing-only DDP and DIP precoders. As a further step, we extend the proposed DDP and DIP approaches to ISAC scenarios, which are solved via a tailored penalty-based alternating optimization algorithm. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed DDP and DIP methods achieve substantial performance gains over conventional ISAC signaling schemes that treat the signal sample covariance matrix as deterministic, which proves that random ISAC signals deserve dedicated precoding designs.

Deep CSI Compression for Dual-Polarized Massive MIMO Channels with Disentangled Representation Learning

Channel state information (CSI) feedback is critical for achieving the promised advantages of enhancing spectral and energy efficiencies in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication systems. Deep learning (DL)-based methods have been proven effective in reducing the required signaling overhead for CSI feedback. In practical dual-polarized MIMO scenarios, channels in the vertical and horizontal polarization directions tend to exhibit high polarization correlation. To fully exploit the inherent propagation similarity within dual-polarized channels, we propose a disentangled representation neural network (NN) for CSI feedback, referred to as DiReNet. The proposed DiReNet disentangles dual-polarized CSI into three components: polarization-shared information, vertical polarization-specific information, and horizontal polarization-specific information. This disentanglement of dual-polarized CSI enables the minimization of information redundancy caused by the polarization correlation and improves the performance of CSI compression and recovery. Additionally, flexible quantization and network extension schemes are designed. Consequently, our method provides a pragmatic solution for CSI feedback to harness the physical MIMO polarization as a priori information. Our experimental results show that the performance of our proposed DiReNet surpasses that of existing DL-based networks, while also effectively reducing the number of network parameters by nearly one third.

RIS-aided Single-frequency 3D Imaging by Exploiting Multi-view Image Correlations

Retrieving range information in three-dimensional (3D) radio imaging is particularly challenging due to the limited communication bandwidth and pilot resources. To address this issue, we consider a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided uplink communication scenario, generating multiple measurements through RIS phase adjustment. This study successfully realizes 3D single-frequency imaging by exploiting the near-field multi-view image correlations deduced from user mobility. We first highlight the significance of considering anisotropy in multi-view image formation by investigating radar cross-section properties and diffraction resolution limits. We then propose a novel model for joint multi-view 3D imaging that incorporates occlusion effects and anisotropic scattering. These factors lead to slow image support variation and smooth coefficient evolution, which are mathematically modeled as Markov processes. Based on this model, we employ the Expectation Maximization-Turbo-Generalized Approximate Message Passing algorithm for joint multi-view single-frequency 3D imaging with limited measurements. Simulation results reveal the superiority of joint multi-view imaging in terms of enhanced imaging ranges, accuracies, and anisotropy characterization compared to single-view imaging. Combining adjacent observations for joint multi-view imaging enables a reduction in the measurement overhead by 80%.

Fluid Antenna for Mobile Edge Computing

In the evolving environment of mobile edge computing (MEC), optimizing system performance to meet the growing demand for low-latency computing services is a top priority. Integrating fluidic antenna (FA) technology into MEC networks provides a new approach to address this challenge. This letter proposes an FA-enabled MEC scheme that aims to minimize the total system delay by leveraging the mobility of FA to enhance channel conditions and improve computational offloading efficiency. By establishing an optimization problem focusing on the joint optimization of computation offloading and antenna positioning, we introduce an alternating iterative algorithm based on the interior point method and particle swarm optimization (IPPSO). Numerical results demonstrate the advantages of our proposed scheme compared to traditional fixed antenna positions, showing significant improvements in transmission rates and reductions in delays. The proposed IPPSO algorithm exhibits robust convergence properties, further validating the effectiveness of our method.

Mean field error estimate of the random batch method for large interacting particle system

The random batch method (RBM) proposed in [Jin et al., J. Comput. Phys., 400(2020), 108877] for large interacting particle systems is an efficient with linear complexity in particle numbers and highly scalable algorithm for $N$-particle interacting systems and their mean-field limits when $N$ is large. We consider in this work the quantitative error estimate of RBM toward its mean-field limit, the Fokker-Planck equation. Under mild assumptions, we obtain a uniform-in-time $O(τ^2 + 1/N)$ bound on the scaled relative entropy between the joint law of the random batch particles and the tensorized law at the mean-field limit, where $τ$ is the time step size and $N$ is the number of particles. Therefore, we improve the existing rate in discretization step size from $O(\sqrtτ)$ to $O(τ)$ in terms of the Wasserstein distance.

Achievable Rate Analysis and Optimization of Double-RIS Assisted Spatially Correlated MIMO with Statistical CSI

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a novel meta-material which can form a smart radio environment by dynamically altering reflection directions of the impinging electromagnetic waves. In the prior literature, the inter-RIS links which also contribute to the performance of the whole system are usually neglected when multiple RISs are deployed. In this paper we investigate a general double-RIS assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication system under spatially correlated non line-of-sight propagation channels, where the cooperation of the double RISs is also considered. The design objective is to maximize the achievable ergodic rate based on full statistical channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we firstly present a closed-form asymptotic expression for the achievable ergodic rate by utilizing replica method from statistical physics. Then a full statistical CSI-enabled optimal design is proposed which avoids high pilot training overhead compared to instantaneous CSI-enabled design. To further reduce the signal processing overhead and lower the complexity for practical realization, a common-phase scheme is proposed to design the double RISs. Simulation results show that the derived asymptotic ergodic rate is quite accurate even for small-sized antenna arrays. And the proposed optimization algorithm can achieve substantial gain at the expense of a low overhead and complexity. Furthermore, the cooperative double-RIS assisted MIMO framework is proven to achieve superior ergodic rate performance and high communication reliability under harsh propagation environment.

Deep Learning-based CSI Feedback for RIS-assisted Multi-user Systems

In the realm of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted wireless communications, efficient channel state information (CSI) feedback is paramount. This paper introduces RIS-CoCsiNet, a novel deep learning-based framework designed to greatly enhance feedback efficiency. By leveraging the inherent correlation among proximate user equipments (UEs), our approach strategically categorizes RIS-UE CSI into shared and unique data sets. This nuanced understanding allows for significant reductions in feedback overhead, as the shared data is no longer redundantly relayed. Setting RIS-CoCsiNet apart from traditional autoencoder systems, we incorporate an additional decoder and a combination neural network at the base station. These enhancements are tasked with the precise retrieval and fusion of shared and individual data. And notably, all these innovations are achieved without modifying the UEs. For those UEs boasting multiple antennas, our design seamlessly integrates long short-term memory modules, capturing the intricate correlations between antennas. With a recognition of the non-sparse nature of the RIS-UE CSI phase, we pioneer two magnitude-dependent phase feedback strategies. These strategies adeptly weave in both statistical and real-time CSI magnitude data. The potency of RIS-CoCsiNet is further solidified through compelling simulation results drawn from two diverse channel datasets.

Near Field Computational Imaging with RIS Generated Virtual Masks

Near field computational imaging has been recognized as a promising technique for non-destructive and highly accurate detection of the target. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can flexibly control the scattered electromagnetic (EM) fields for sensing the target and can thus help computational imaging in the near field. In this paper, we propose a near-field imaging scheme based on holograghic aperture RIS. Specifically, we first establish an end-to-end EM propagation model from the perspective of Maxwell equations. To mitigate the inherent ill conditioning of the inverse problem in the imaging system, we design the EM field patterns as masks that help translate the inverse problem into a forward problem. Next, we utilize RIS to generate different virtual EM masks on the target surface and calculate the cross-correlation between the mask patterns and the electric field strength at the receiver. We then provide a RIS design scheme for virtual EM masks by employing a regularization technique. The cross-range resolution of the proposed method is analyzed based on the spatial spectrum of the generated masks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve high-quality imaging. Moreover, the imaging quality can be improved by generating more virtual EM masks, by increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver, or by placing the target closer to the RIS.

Measurement-Based Small-Scale Channel Model for Sub-6 GHz RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have attracted increasing interest from both academia and industry, thanks to their unique features on controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves. Although theoretical models for RIS-empowered communications have covered a variety of applications, yet, very few papers have investigated the modeling of real propagation characteristics. In this paper, we fill this gap by providing an empirical statistical channel model to describe the small-scale channel variations for an RIS-assisted broadband system at 2.6 GHz. Based on real channel measurements in outdoor, indoor and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environments, we compare and analyze the global, inter-cluster and intra-cluster parameters. Measurement results indicate that the deployment of an RIS with proper phase configurations can significantly improve the channel quality by enhancing the $K$-factor and reducing the time dispersion. The small-scale fading is well characterized by the proposed statistical model and the empirical channel parameters. These results are essential for the design of emerging RIS-assisted wireless systems for future applications.

Lightweight Neural Network with Knowledge Distillation for CSI Feedback

Deep learning has shown promise in enhancing channel state information (CSI) feedback. However, many studies indicate that better feedback performance often accompanies higher computational complexity. Pursuing better performance-complexity tradeoffs is crucial to facilitate practical deployment, especially on computation-limited devices, which may have to use lightweight autoencoder with unfavorable performance. To achieve this goal, this paper introduces knowledge distillation (KD) to achieve better tradeoffs, where knowledge from a complicated teacher autoencoder is transferred to a lightweight student autoencoder for performance improvement. Specifically, two methods are proposed for implementation. Firstly, an autoencoder KD-based method is introduced by training a student autoencoder to mimic the reconstructed CSI of a pretrained teacher autoencoder. Secondly, an encoder KD-based method is proposed to reduce training overhead by performing KD only on the student encoder. Additionally, a variant of encoder KD is introduced to protect user equipment and base station vendor intellectual property. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed methods can significantly improve the student autoencoder's performance, while reducing the number of floating point operations and inference time to 3.05%-5.28% and 13.80%-14.76% of the teacher network, respectively. Furthermore, the variant encoder KD method effectively enhances the student autoencoder's generalization capability across different scenarios, environments, and bandwidths.

Distributed Approximate Computing with Constant Locality

Consider a distributed coding for computing problem with constant decoding locality, i.e., with a vanishing error probability, any single sample of the function can be approximately recovered by probing only constant number of compressed bits. We establish an achievable rate region by designing an efficient layered coding scheme, where the coding rate is reduced by introducing auxiliary random variables and local decoding is achieved by exploiting the expander graph code. Then we show the rate region is optimal under mild regularity conditions on source distributions. The proof relies on the reverse hypercontractivity and a rounding technique to construct auxiliary random variables. The rate region is strictly smaller than that for the classical problem without the constant locality constraint in most cases, which indicates that more rate is required in order to achieve lower coding complexity. Moreover, a coding for computing problem with side information is analogously studied. We also develop graph characterizations, which simplifies the computation of the achievable rate region.
