Multi-User Modular XL-MIMO Communications: Near-Field Beam Focusing Pattern and User Grouping

In this paper, we investigate multi-user modular extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) communication systems, where modular extremely large-scale uniform linear array (XL-ULA) is deployed at the base station (BS) to serve multiple single-antenna users. By exploiting the unique modular array architecture and considering the potential near-field propagation, we develop sub-array based uniform spherical wave (USW) models for distinct versus common angles of arrival/departure (AoAs/AoDs) with respect to different sub-arrays/modules, respectively. Under such USW models, we analyze the beam focusing patterns at the near-field observation location by using near-field beamforming. The analysis reveals that compared to the conventional XL-MIMO with collocated antenna elements, modular XL-MIMO can provide better spatial resolution by benefiting from its larger array aperture. However, it also incurs undesired grating lobes due to the large inter-module separation. Moreover, it is found that for multi-user modular XL-MIMO communications, the achievable signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for users may be degraded by the grating lobes of the beam focusing pattern. To address this issue, an efficient user grouping method is proposed for multi-user transmission scheduling, so that users located within the grating lobes of each other are not allocated to the same time-frequency resource block (RB) for their communications. Numerical results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed user grouping method, as well as the superior performance of modular XL-MIMO over its collocated counterpart with densely distributed users.

Graph Neural Network-Enhanced Expectation Propagation Algorithm for MIMO Turbo Receivers

Deep neural networks (NNs) are considered a powerful tool for balancing the performance and complexity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receivers due to their accurate feature extraction, high parallelism, and excellent inference ability. Graph NNs (GNNs) have recently demonstrated outstanding capability in learning enhanced message passing rules and have shown success in overcoming the drawback of inaccurate Gaussian approximation of expectation propagation (EP)-based MIMO detectors. However, the application of the GNN-enhanced EP detector to MIMO turbo receivers is underexplored and non-trivial due to the requirement of extrinsic information for iterative processing. This paper proposes a GNN-enhanced EP algorithm for MIMO turbo receivers, which realizes the turbo principle of generating extrinsic information from the MIMO detector through a specially designed training procedure. Additionally, an edge pruning strategy is designed to eliminate redundant connections in the original fully connected model of the GNN utilizing the correlation information inherently from the EP algorithm. Edge pruning reduces the computational cost dramatically and enables the network to focus more attention on the weights that are vital for performance. Simulation results and complexity analysis indicate that the proposed MIMO turbo receiver outperforms the EP turbo approaches by over 1 dB at the bit error rate of $10^{-5}$, exhibits performance equivalent to state-of-the-art receivers with 2.5 times shorter running time, and adapts to various scenarios.

Single-Carrier Delay Alignment Modulation for Multi-IRS Aided Communication

Delay alignment modulation (DAM) is a promising technology to achieve ISI-free wideband communication, by leveraging delay compensation and path-based beamforming, rather than the conventional channel equalization or multi-carrier transmission. In particular, when there exist a few strong time-dispersive channel paths, DAM can effectively align different propagation delays and achieve their constructive superposition, thus especially appealing for intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs)-aided communications with controllable multi-paths. In this paper, we apply DAM to multi-IRS aided wideband communication and study its practical design and achievable performance. We first provide an asymptotic analysis showing that when the number of base station (BS) antennas is much larger than that of IRSs, an ISI-free channel can be established with appropriate delay pre-compensation and the simple path-based MRT beamforming. We then consider the general system setup and study the problem of joint path-based beamforming and phase shifts design for DAM transmission, by considering the three classical beamforming techniques on a per-path basis, namely the low-complexity path-based MRT beamforming, the path-based ZF beamforming for ISI-free DAM communication, and the optimal path-based MMSE beamforming. As a comparison, OFDM-based multi-IRS aided communication is considered. Simulation results demonstrate that DAM outperforms OFDM in terms of spectral efficiency, BER, and PAPR.

Error estimates of a bi-fidelity method for a multi-phase Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system with random inputs

Uniform error estimates of a bi-fidelity method for a kinetic-fluid coupled model with random initial inputs in the fine particle regime are proved in this paper. Such a model is a system coupling the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equations for a mixture of the flows with distinct particle sizes. The main analytic tool is the hypocoercivity analysis for the multi-phase Navier-Stokes-Vlasov-Fokker-Planck system with uncertainties, considering solutions in a perturbative setting near the global equilibrium. This allows us to obtain the error estimates in both kinetic and hydrodynamic regimes.

Quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations via Schrödingersation

We present quantum algorithms for electromagnetic fields governed by Maxwell's equations. The algorithms are based on the Schrödingersation approach, which transforms any linear PDEs and ODEs with non-unitary dynamics into a system evolving under unitary dynamics, via a warped phase transformation that maps the equation into one higher dimension. In this paper, our quantum algorithms are based on either a direct approximation of Maxwell's equations combined with Yee's algorithm, or a matrix representation in terms of Riemann-Silberstein vectors combined with a spectral approach and an upwind scheme. We implement these algorithms with physical boundary conditions, including perfect conductor and impedance boundaries. We also solve Maxwell's equations for a linear inhomogeneous medium, specifically the interface problem. Several numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate the validity of this approach. In addition, instead of qubits, the quantum algorithms can also be formulated in the continuous variable quantum framework, which allows the quantum simulation of Maxwell's equations in analog quantum simulation.

Asymptotic-preserving neural networks for multiscale Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system in the high-field regime

The Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck (VPFP) system is a fundamental model in plasma physics that describes the Brownian motion of a large ensemble of particles within a surrounding bath. Under the high-field scaling, both collision and field are dominant. This paper introduces two Asymptotic-Preserving Neural Network (APNN) methods within a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework for solving the VPFP system in the high-field regime. These methods aim to overcome the computational challenges posed by high dimensionality and multiple scales of the system. The first APNN method leverages the micro-macro decomposition model of the original VPFP system, while the second is based on the mass conservation law. Both methods ensure that the loss function of the neural networks transitions naturally from the kinetic model to the high-field limit model, thereby preserving the correct asymptotic behavior. Through extensive numerical experiments, these APNN methods demonstrate their effectiveness in solving multiscale and high dimensional uncertain problems, as well as their broader applicability for problems with long time duration and non-equilibrium initial data.

RIS-Enhanced Semantic Communications Adaptive to User Requirements

Semantic communication significantly reduces required bandwidth by understanding semantic meaning of the transmitted. However, current deep learning-based semantic communication methods rely on joint source-channel coding design and end-to-end training, which limits their adaptability to new physical channels and user requirements. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) offer a solution by customizing channels in different environments. In this study, we propose the RIS-SC framework, which allocates semantic contents with varying levels of RIS assistance to satisfy the changing user requirements. It takes into account user movement and line-of-sight obstructions, enabling the RIS resource to protect important semantics in challenging channel conditions. The simulation results indicate reasonable task performance, but some semantic parts that have no effect on task performances are abandoned under severe channel conditions. To address this issue, a reconstruction method is also introduced to improve visual acceptance by inferring those missing semantic parts. Furthermore, the framework can adjust RIS resources in friendly channel conditions to save and allocate them efficiently among multiple users. Simulation results demonstrate the adaptability and efficiency of the RIS-SC framework across diverse channel conditions and user requirements.

EsaNet: Environment Semantics Enabled Physical Layer Authentication

Wireless networks are vulnerable to physical layer spoofing attacks due to the wireless broadcast nature, thus, integrating communications and security (ICAS) is urgently needed for 6G endogenous security. In this letter, we propose an environment semantics enabled physical layer authentication network based on deep learning, namely EsaNet, to authenticate the spoofing from the underlying wireless protocol. Specifically, the frequency independent wireless channel fingerprint (FiFP) is extracted from the channel state information (CSI) of a massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) system based on environment semantics knowledge. Then, we transform the received signal into a two-dimensional red green blue (RGB) image and apply the you only look once (YOLO), a single-stage object detection network, to quickly capture the FiFP. Next, a lightweight classification network is designed to distinguish the legitimate from the illegitimate users. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed EsaNet can effectively detect physical layer spoofing attacks and is robust in time-varying wireless environments.

Joint Beam Management and SLAM for mmWave Communication Systems

The millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication technology, which employs large-scale antenna arrays, enables inherent sensing capabilities. Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) can utilize channel multipath angle estimates to realize integrated sensing and communication design in 6G communication systems. However, existing works have ignored the significant overhead required by the mmWave beam management when implementing SLAM with angle estimates. This study proposes a joint beam management and SLAM design that utilizes the strong coupling between the radio map and channel multipath for simultaneous beam management, localization, and mapping. In this approach, we first propose a hierarchical sweeping and sensing service design. The path angles are estimated in the hierarchical sweeping, enabling angle-based SLAM with the aid of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) to realize sensing service. Then, feature-aided tracking is proposed that utilizes prior angle information generated from the radio map and IMU. Finally, a switching module is introduced to enable flexible switching between hierarchical sweeping and feature-aided tracking. Simulations show that the proposed joint design can achieve sub-meter level localization and mapping accuracy (with an error < 0.5 m). Moreover, the beam management overhead can be reduced by approximately 40% in different wireless environments.

When Physical Layer Key Generation Meets RIS: Opportunities, Challenges, and Road Ahead

Physical layer key generation (PLKG) is a promising technology to obtain symmetric keys between a pair of wireless communication users in a plug-and-play manner. The shared entropy source almost entirely comes from the intrinsic randomness of the radio channel, which is highly dependent on the wireless environments. However, in some static/block fading wireless environments, the intrinsic randomness of the wireless channel is hard to be guaranteed. Very recently, thanks to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) with their excellent ability on electromagnetic wave control, the wireless channel environment can be customized. In this article, we overview the RISaided PLKG in static indoor environments, including its channel model and hardware architectures. Then, we propose potential application scenarios and analyze the design challenges of RIS aided PLKG, including channel reciprocity, RIS reconfiguration speed and RIS deployment via proof-of-concept experiments on a RIS-aided PLKG prototype system. In particular, our experimental results show that the key generation rate is 15-fold higher than that without RIS in a static indoor environment. Next, we design a RIS jamming attack via a prototype experiment and discuss its possible attack-defense countermeasures. Finally, several conclusions and future directions are identified.

Time complexity analysis of quantum algorithms via linear representations for nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations

We construct quantum algorithms to compute the solution and/or physical observables of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) and nonlinear Hamilton-Jacobi equations (HJE) via linear representations or exact mappings between nonlinear ODEs/HJE and linear partial differential equations (the Liouville equation and the Koopman-von Neumann equation). The connection between the linear representations and the original nonlinear system is established through the Dirac delta function or the level set mechanism. We compare the quantum linear systems algorithms based methods and the quantum simulation methods arising from different numerical approximations, including the finite difference discretisations and the Fourier spectral discretisations for the two different linear representations, with the result showing that the quantum simulation methods usually give the best performance in time complexity. We also propose the Schrödinger framework to solve the Liouville equation for the HJE with the Hamiltonian formulation of classical mechanics, since it can be recast as the semiclassical limit of the Wigner transform of the Schrödinger equation. Comparsion between the Schrödinger and the Liouville framework will also be made.

Multi-task Learning-based CSI Feedback Design in Multiple Scenarios

For frequency division duplex systems, the essential downlink channel state information (CSI) feedback includes the links of compression, feedback, decompression and reconstruction to reduce the feedback overhead. One efficient CSI feedback method is the Auto-Encoder (AE) structure based on deep learning, yet facing problems in actual deployments, such as selecting the deployment mode when deploying in a cell with multiple complex scenarios. Rather than designing an AE network with huge complexity to deal with CSI of all scenarios, a more realistic mode is to divide the CSI dataset by region/scenario and use multiple relatively simple AE networks to handle subregions' CSI. However, both require high memory capacity for user equipment (UE) and are not suitable for low-level devices. In this paper, we propose a new user-friendly-designed framework based on the latter multi-tasking mode. Via Multi-Task Learning, our framework, Single-encoder-to-Multiple-decoders (S-to-M), designs the multiple independent AEs into a joint architecture: a shared encoder corresponds to multiple task-specific decoders. We also complete our framework with GateNet as a classifier to enable the base station autonomously select the right task-specific decoder corresponding to the subregion. Experiments on the simulating multi-scenario CSI dataset demonstrate our proposed S-to-M's advantages over the other benchmark modes, i.e., significantly reducing the model complexity and the UE's memory consumption

Dual-Propagation-Feature Fusion Enhanced Neural CSI Compression for Massive MIMO

Due to the ability of feature extraction, deep learning (DL)-based methods have been recently applied to channel state information (CSI) compression feedback in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Existing DL-based CSI compression methods are usually effective in extracting a certain type of features in the CSI. However, the CSI usually contains two types of propagation features, i.g., non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation-path feature and dominant propagation-path feature, especially in channel environments with rich scatterers. To fully extract the both propagation features and learn a dual-feature representation for CSI, this paper proposes a dual-feature-fusion neural network (NN), referred to as DuffinNet. The proposed DuffinNet adopts a parallel structure with a convolutional neural network (CNN) and an attention-empowered neural network (ANN) to respectively extract different features in the CSI, and then explores their interplay by a fusion NN. Built upon this proposed DuffinNet, a new encoder-decoder framework is developed, referred to as Duffin-CsiNet, for improving the end-to-end performance of CSI compression and reconstruction. To facilitate the application of Duffin-CsiNet in practice, this paper also presents a two-stage approach for codeword quantization of the CSI feedback. Besides, a transfer learning-based strategy is introduced to improve the generalization of Duffin-CsiNet, which enables the network to be applied to new propagation environments. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed Duffin-CsiNet noticeably outperforms the existing DL-based methods in terms of reconstruction performance, encoder complexity, and network convergence, validating the effectiveness of the proposed dual-feature fusion design.

Angle-based SLAM on 5G mmWave Systems: Design, Implementation, and Measurement

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) is a key technology that provides user equipment (UE) tracking and environment mapping services, enabling the deep integration of sensing and communication. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication, with its larger bandwidths and antenna arrays, inherently facilitates more accurate delay and angle measurements than sub-6 GHz communication, thereby providing opportunities for SLAM. However, none of the existing works have realized the SLAM function under the 5G New Radio (NR) standard due to specification and hardware constraints. In this study, we investigate how 5G mmWave communication systems can achieve situational awareness without changing the transceiver architecture and 5G NR standard. We implement 28 GHz mmWave transceivers that deploy OFDM-based 5G NR waveform with 160 MHz channel bandwidth, and we realize beam management following the 5G NR. Furthermore, we develop an efficient successive cancellation-based angle extraction approach to obtain angles of arrival and departure from the reference signal received power measurements. On the basis of angle measurements, we propose an angle-only SLAM algorithm to track UE and map features in the radio environment. Thorough experiments and ray tracing-based computer simulations verify that the proposed angle-based SLAM can achieve sub-meter level localization and mapping accuracy with a single base station and without the requirement of strict time synchronization. Our experiments also reveal many propagation properties critical to the success of SLAM in 5G mmWave communication systems.

Joint Localization and Environment Sensing by Harnessing NLOS Components in RIS-aided mmWave Communication Systems

This study explores the use of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) components in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems for joint localization and environment sensing. The radar cross section (RCS) of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is calculated to develop a general path gain model for RISs and traditional scatterers. The results show that RISs have a greater potential to assist in localization due to their ability to maintain high RCSs and create strong NLOS links. A one-stage linear weighted least squares estimator is proposed to simultaneously determine user equipment (UE) locations, velocities, and scatterer (or RIS) locations using line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS paths. The estimator supports environment sensing and UE localization even using only NLOS paths. A second-stage estimator is also introduced to improve environment sensing accuracy by considering the nonlinear relationship between UE and scatterer locations. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed estimators in rich scattering environments and the benefits of using NLOS paths for improving UE location accuracy and assisting in environment sensing. The effects of RIS number, size, and deployment on localization performance are also analyzed.

Two-Bit RIS-Aided Communications at 3.5GHz: Some Insights from the Measurement Results Under Multiple Practical Scenes

In this paper, we propose a two-bit reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system, which mainly consists of a two-bit RIS, a transmitter and a receiver. A corresponding prototype verification system is designed to perform experimental tests in practical environments. The carrier frequency is set as 3.5GHz, and the RIS array possesses 256 units, each of which adopts two-bit phase quantization. In particular, we adopt a self-developed broadband intelligent communication system 40MHz-Net (BICT-40N) terminal in order to fully acquire the channel information. The terminal mainly includes a baseband board and a radio frequency (RF) front-end board, where the latter can achieve 26 dB transmitting link gain and 33 dB receiving link gain. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is used for the terminal, where the bandwidth is 40MHz and the subcarrier spacing is 625KHz. Also, the terminal supports a series of modulation modes, including QPSK, QAM, etc.Through experimental tests, we validate a few functions and properties of the RIS as follows. First, we validate a novel RIS power consumption model, which considers both the static and the dynamic power consumption. Besides, we demonstrate the existence of the imaging interference and find that two-bit RIS can lower the imaging interference about 10 dBm. Moreover, we verify that the RIS can outperform the metal plate in terms of the beam focusing performance. In addition, we find that the RIS has the ability to improve the channel stationarity. Then, we realize the multi-beam reflection of the RIS utilizing the pattern addition (PA) algorithm. Lastly, we validate the existence of the mutual coupling between different RIS units.

Multi-Scenario Broadband Channel Measurement and Modeling for Sub-6 GHz RIS-Assisted Wireless Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered communication, has been considered widely as one of the revolutionary technologies for next generation networks. However, due to the novel propagation characteristics of RISs, underlying RIS channel modeling and measurement research is still in its infancy and not fully investigated. In this paper, we conduct multi-scenario broadband channel measurements and modeling for RIS-assisted communications at the sub-6 GHz band. The measurements are carried out in three scenarios covering outdoor, indoor, and outdoor-to-indoor (O2I) environments, which suffer from non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation inherently. Three propagation modes including intelligent reflection with RIS, specular reflection with RIS and the mode without RIS, are taken into account in each scenario. In addition, considering the cascaded characteristics of RIS-assisted channel by nature, two modified empirical models including floating-intercept (FI) and close-in (CI) are proposed, which cover distance and angle domains. The measurement results rooted in 2096 channel acquisitions verify the prediction accuracy of these proposed models. Moreover, the propagation characteristics for RIS-assisted channels, including path loss (PL) gain, PL exponent, spatial consistency, time dispersion, frequency stationarity, etc., are compared and analyzed comprehensively. These channel measurement and modeling results may lay the groundwork for future applications of RIS-assisted communication systems in practice.
