Quantum simulation for time-dependent Hamiltonians -- with applications to non-autonomous ordinary and partial differential equations

Non-autonomous dynamical systems appear in a very wide range of interesting applications, both in classical and quantum dynamics, where in the latter case it corresponds to having a time-dependent Hamiltonian. However, the quantum simulation of these systems often needs to appeal to rather complicated procedures involving the Dyson series, considerations of time-ordering, requirement of time steps to be discrete and/or requiring multiple measurements and postselection. These procedures are generally much more complicated than the quantum simulation of time-independent Hamiltonians. Here we propose an alternative formalism that turns any non-autonomous unitary dynamical system into an autonomous unitary system, i.e., quantum system with a time-independent Hamiltonian, in one higher dimension, while keeping time continuous. This makes the simulation with time-dependent Hamiltonians not much more difficult than that of time-independent Hamiltonians, and can also be framed in terms of an analogue quantum system evolving continuously in time. We show how our new quantum protocol for time-dependent Hamiltonians can be performed in a resource-efficient way and without measurements, and can be made possible on either continuous-variable, qubit or hybrid systems. Combined with a technique called Schrodingerisation, this dilation technique can be applied to the quantum simulation of any linear ODEs and PDEs, and nonlinear ODEs and certain nonlinear PDEs, with time-dependent coefficients.

Communication-efficient Personalized Federated Edge Learning for Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

Deep learning (DL)-based channel state information (CSI) feedback has received significant research attention in recent years. However, previous research has overlooked the potential privacy disclosure problem caused by the transmission of CSI datasets during the training process. In this work, we introduce a federated edge learning (FEEL)-based training framework for DL-based CSI feedback. This approach differs from the conventional centralized learning (CL)-based framework in which the CSI datasets are collected at the base station (BS) before training. Instead, each user equipment (UE) trains a local autoencoder network and exchanges model parameters with the BS. This approach provides better protection for data privacy compared to CL. To further reduce communication overhead in FEEL, we quantize uplink and downlink model transmission into different bits based on their influence on feedback performance. Additionally, since the heterogeneity of CSI datasets in different UEs can degrade the performance of the FEEL-based framework, we introduce a personalization strategy to improve feedback performance. This strategy allows for local fine-tuning to adapt the global model to the channel characteristics of each UE. Simulation results indicate that the proposed personalized FEEL-based training framework can significantly improve the performance of DL-based CSI feedback while reducing communication overhead.

Auto-CsiNet: Scenario-customized Automatic Neural Network Architecture Generation for Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

Deep learning has revolutionized the design of the channel state information (CSI) feedback module in wireless communications. However, designing the optimal neural network (NN) architecture for CSI feedback can be a laborious and time-consuming process. Manual design can be prohibitively expensive for customizing NNs to different scenarios. This paper proposes using neural architecture search (NAS) to automate the generation of scenario-customized CSI feedback NN architectures, thereby maximizing the potential of deep learning in exclusive environments. By employing automated machine learning and gradient-descent-based NAS, an efficient and cost-effective architecture design process is achieved. The proposed approach leverages implicit scene knowledge, integrating it into the scenario customization process in a data-driven manner, and fully exploits the potential of deep learning for each specific scenario. To address the issue of excessive search, early stopping and elastic selection mechanisms are employed, enhancing the efficiency of the proposed scheme. The experimental results demonstrate that the automatically generated architecture, known as Auto-CsiNet, outperforms manually-designed models in both reconstruction performance (achieving approximately a 14% improvement) and complexity (reducing it by approximately 50%). Furthermore, the paper analyzes the impact of the scenario on the NN architecture and its capacity.

Low-Complexity Joint Beamforming for RIS-Assisted MU-MISO Systems Based on Model-Driven Deep Learning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) can improve signal propagation environments by adjusting the phase of the incident signal. However, optimizing the phase shifts jointly with the beamforming vector at the access point is challenging due to the non-convex objective function and constraints. In this study, we propose an algorithm based on weighted minimum mean square error optimization and power iteration to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR) of a RIS-assisted downlink multi-user multiple-input single-output system. To further improve performance, a model-driven deep learning (DL) approach is designed, where trainable variables and graph neural networks are introduced to accelerate the convergence of the proposed algorithm. We also extend the proposed method to include beamforming with imperfect channel state information and derive a two-timescale stochastic optimization algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of complexity and WSR. Specifically, the model-driven DL approach has a runtime that is approximately 3% of the state-of-the-art algorithm to achieve the same performance. Additionally, the proposed algorithm with 2-bit phase shifters outperforms the compared algorithm with continuous phase shift.

Channel and Gradient-Importance Aware Device Scheduling for Over-the-Air Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) is a popular privacy-preserving distributed training scheme, where multiple devices collaborate to train machine learning models by uploading local model updates. To improve communication efficiency, over-the-air computation (AirComp) has been applied to FL, which leverages analog modulation to harness the superposition property of radio waves such that numerous devices can upload their model updates concurrently for aggregation. However, the uplink channel noise incurs considerable model aggregation distortion, which is critically determined by the device scheduling and compromises the learned model performance. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic device scheduling framework for over-the-air FL, named PO-FL, to mitigate the negative impact of channel noise, where each device is scheduled according to a certain probability and its model update is reweighted using this probability in aggregation. We prove the unbiasedness of this aggregation scheme and demonstrate the convergence of PO-FL on both convex and non-convex loss functions. Our convergence bounds unveil that the device scheduling affects the learning performance through the communication distortion and global update variance. Based on the convergence analysis, we further develop a channel and gradient-importance aware algorithm to optimize the device scheduling probabilities in PO-FL. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed PO-FL framework with channel and gradient-importance awareness achieves faster convergence and produces better models than baseline methods.

Semantic Communication for Cooperative Perception based on Importance Map

Cooperative perception, which has a broader perception field than single-vehicle perception, has played an increasingly important role in autonomous driving to conduct 3D object detection. Through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology, various connected automated vehicles (CAVs) can share their sensory information (LiDAR point clouds) for cooperative perception. We employ an importance map to extract significant semantic information and propose a novel cooperative perception semantic communication scheme with intermediate fusion. Meanwhile, our proposed architecture can be extended to the challenging time-varying multipath fading channel. To alleviate the distortion caused by the time-varying multipath fading, we adopt explicit orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) blocks combined with channel estimation and channel equalization. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms the traditional separate source-channel coding over various channel models. Moreover, a robustness study indicates that only part of semantic information is key to cooperative perception. Although our proposed model has only been trained over one specific channel, it has the ability to learn robust coded representations of semantic information that remain resilient to various channel models, demonstrating its generality and robustness.

Knowledge-driven Meta-learning for CSI Feedback

Accurate and effective channel state information (CSI) feedback is a key technology for massive multiple-input and multiple-output systems. Recently, deep learning (DL) has been introduced for CSI feedback enhancement through massive collected training data and lengthy training time, which is quite costly and impractical for realistic deployment. In this article, a knowledge-driven meta-learning approach is proposed, where the DL model initialized by the meta model obtained from meta training phase is able to achieve rapid convergence when facing a new scenario during target retraining phase. Specifically, instead of training with massive data collected from various scenarios, the meta task environment is constructed based on the intrinsic knowledge of spatial-frequency characteristics of CSI for meta training. Moreover, the target task dataset is also augmented by exploiting the knowledge of statistical characteristics of wireless channel, so that the DL model can achieve higher performance with small actually collected dataset and short training time. In addition, we provide analyses of rationale for the improvement yielded by the knowledge in both phases. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach from the perspective of feedback performance and convergence speed.

Enhancing Energy Efficiency for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces with Practical Power Models

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are widely considered a promising technology for future wireless communication systems. As an important indicator of RIS-assisted communication systems in green wireless communications, energy efficiency (EE) has recently received intensive research interest as an optimization target. However, most previous works have ignored the different power consumption between ON and OFF states of the PIN diodes attached to each RIS element. This oversight results in extensive unnecessary power consumption and reduction of actual EE due to the inaccurate power model. To address this issue, in this paper, we first utilize a practical power model for a RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system, which takes into account the difference in power dissipation caused by ON-OFF states of RIS's PIN diodes. Based on this model, we formulate a more accurate EE optimization problem. However, this problem is non-convex and has mixed-integer properties, which poses a challenge for optimization. To solve the problem, an effective alternating optimization (AO) algorithm framework is utilized to optimize the base station and RIS beamforming precoder separately. To obtain the essential RIS beamforming precoder, we develop two effective methods based on maximum gradient search and SDP relaxation respectively. Theoretical analysis shows the exponential complexity of the original problem has been reduced to polynomial complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing ones, leading to a significant increase in EE across a diverse set of scenarios.

Low-Complex Channel Estimation in Extra-Large Scale MIMO with the Spherical Wave Properties

This paper investigates the low-complex linear minimum mean squared error (LMMSE) channel estimation in an extra-large scale MIMO system with the spherical wave model (SWM). We model the extra-large scale MIMO channels using the SWM in the terahertz (THz) line-of-sight propagation, in which the transceiver is a uniform circular antenna array. On this basis, for the known channel covariance matrix (CCM), a low-complex LMMSE channel estimation algorithm is proposed by exploiting the spherical wave properties (SWP). Meanwhile, for the unknown CCM, a similar low-complex LMMSE channel estimation algorithm is also proposed. Both theoretical and simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has lower complexity without reducing the accuracy of channel estimation.

Cell-free Terahertz Networks: A Spatial-spectral Approach

Cell-free network architecture plays a promising role in the terahertz (THz) networks since it provides better link reliability and uniformly good services for all the users compared to the co-located massive MIMO counterpart, and the spatial-spectral THz link has the advantages of lower initial access latency and fast beam operations. To this end, this work studies cell-free spatial-spectral THz networks with leaky-wave antennas, to exploit the benefits of leveraging both cell-free and spatial-spectral THz technologies. By addressing the coupling effects between propagation angles and frequencies, we propose novel frequency-dependent THz transmit antenna selection schemes to maximize the transmission rate. Numerical results confirm that the proposed antenna selection schemes can achieve much larger transmission rate than the maximal ratio transmission of using all the transmit antennas with equal subchannel bandwidth allocation in higher THz frequencies.

Soft Demodulator for Symbol-Level Precoding in Coded Multiuser MISO Systems

In this paper, we consider symbol-level precoding (SLP) in channel-coded multiuser multi-input single-output (MISO) systems. It is observed that the received SLP signals do not always follow Gaussian distribution, rendering the conventional soft demodulation with the Gaussian assumption unsuitable for the coded SLP systems. It, therefore, calls for novel soft demodulator designs for non-Gaussian distributed SLP signals with accurate log-likelihood ratio (LLR) calculation. To this end, we first investigate the non-Gaussian characteristics of both phase-shift keying (PSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) received signals with existing SLP schemes and categorize the signals into two distinct types. The first type exhibits an approximate-Gaussian distribution with the outliers extending along the constructive interference region (CIR). In contrast, the second type follows some distribution that significantly deviates from the Gaussian distribution. To obtain accurate LLR, we propose the modified Gaussian soft demodulator and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) soft demodulators to deal with two types of signals respectively. Subsequently, to further reduce the computational complexity and pilot overhead, we put forward a novel neural soft demodulator, named pilot feature extraction network (PFEN), leveraging the transformer mechanism in deep learning. Simulation results show that the proposed soft demodulators dramatically improve the throughput of existing SLPs for both PSK and QAM transmission in coded systems.

Meta Reinforcement Learning for Fast Spectrum Sharing in Vehicular Networks

In this paper, we investigate the problem of fast spectrum sharing in vehicle-to-everything communication. In order to improve the spectrum efficiency of the whole system, the spectrum of vehicle-to-infrastructure links is reused by vehicle-to-vehicle links. To this end, we model it as a problem of deep reinforcement learning and tackle it with proximal policy optimization. A considerable number of interactions are often required for training an agent with good performance, so simulation-based training is commonly used in communication networks. Nevertheless, severe performance degradation may occur when the agent is directly deployed in the real world, even though it can perform well on the simulator, due to the reality gap between the simulation and the real environments. To address this issue, we make preliminary efforts by proposing an algorithm based on meta reinforcement learning. This algorithm enables the agent to rapidly adapt to a new task with the knowledge extracted from similar tasks, leading to fewer interactions and less training time. Numerical results show that our method achieves near-optimal performance and exhibits rapid convergence.

Capturing the Diffusive Behavior of the Multiscale Linear Transport Equations by Asymptotic-Preserving Convolutional DeepONets

In this paper, we introduce two types of novel Asymptotic-Preserving Convolutional Deep Operator Networks (APCONs) designed to address the multiscale time-dependent linear transport problem. We observe that the vanilla physics-informed DeepONets with modified MLP may exhibit instability in maintaining the desired limiting macroscopic behavior. Therefore, this necessitates the utilization of an asymptotic-preserving loss function. Drawing inspiration from the heat kernel in the diffusion equation, we propose a new architecture called Convolutional Deep Operator Networks, which employ multiple local convolution operations instead of a global heat kernel, along with pooling and activation operations in each filter layer. Our APCON methods possess a parameter count that is independent of the grid size and are capable of capturing the diffusive behavior of the linear transport problem. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of our methods through several numerical examples.

Dilation theorem via Schrödingerisation, with applications to the quantum simulation of differential equations

Nagy's unitary dilation theorem in operator theory asserts the possibility of dilating a contraction into a unitary operator. When used in quantum computing, its practical implementation primarily relies on block-encoding techniques, based on finite-dimensional scenarios. In this study, we delve into the recently devised Schrödingerisation approach and demonstrate its viability as an alternative dilation technique. This approach is applicable to operators in the form of $V(t)=\exp(-At)$, which arises in wide-ranging applications, particularly in solving linear ordinary and partial differential equations. Importantly, the Schrödingerisation approach is adaptable to both finite and infinite-dimensional cases, in both countable and uncountable domains. For quantum systems lying in infinite dimensional Hilbert space, the dilation involves adding a single infinite dimensional mode, and this is the continuous-variable version of the Schrödingerisation procedure which makes it suitable for analog quantum computing. Furthermore, by discretising continuous variables, the Schrödingerisation method can also be effectively employed in finite-dimensional scenarios suitable for qubit-based quantum computing.

Performance Evaluation for Subarray-based Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Wireless Communication Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have received extensive concern to improve the performance of wireless communication systems. In this paper, a subarray-based scheme is investigated in terms of its effects on ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) in RIS-assisted systems. In this scheme, the adjacent elements divided into a subarray are controlled by one signal and share the same reflection coefficient. An upper bound of ergodic SE is derived and an optimal phase shift design is proposed for the subarray-based RIS. Based on the upper bound and optimal design, we obtain the maximum of the upper bound. In particular, we analytically evaluate the effect of the subarray-based RIS on EE since it reduces SE and power consumption simultaneously. Numerical results verify the tightness of the upper bound, demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimal phase shift design for the subarray-based RIS, and reveal the effects of the subarray-based scheme on SE and EE.
