Controlling spectral energies of all harmonics in programmable way using time-domain digital coding metasurface

Modern wireless communication is one of the most important information technologies, but its system architecture has been unchanged for many years. Here, we propose a much simpler architecture for wireless communication systems based on metasurface. We firstly propose a time-domain digital coding metasurface to reach a simple but efficient method to manipulate spectral distributions of harmonics. Under dynamic modulations of phases on surface reflectivity, we could achieve accurate controls to different harmonics in a programmable way to reach many unusual functions like frequency cloaking and velocity illusion, owing to the temporal gradient introduced by digital signals encoded by '0' and '1' sequences. A theoretical model is presented and experimentally validated to reveal the nonlinear process. Based on the time-domain digital coding metasurface, we propose and realize a new wireless communication system in binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) frame, which has much more simplified architecture than the traditional BFSK with excellent performance for real-time message transmission. The presented work, from new concept to new system, will find important applications in modern information technologies.

Quantum hydrodynamic approximations to the finite temperature trapped Bose gases

For the quantum kinetic system modelling the Bose-Einstein Condensate that accounts for interactions between condensate and excited atoms, we use the Chapman-Enskog expansion to derive its hydrodynamic approximations, include both Euler and Navier-Stokes approximations. The hydrodynamic approximations describe not only the macroscopic behavior of the BEC but also its coupling with the non-condensates, which agrees with Landau's two fluid theory.

Learning Oriented Cross-Entropy Approach to User Association in Load-Balanced HetNet

This letter considers optimizing user association in a heterogeneous network via utility maximization, which is a combinatorial optimization problem due to integer constraints. Different from existing solutions based on convex optimization, we alternatively propose a cross-entropy (CE)-based algorithm inspired by a sampling approach developed in machine learning. Adopting a probabilistic model, we first reformulate the original problem as a CE minimization problem which aims to learn the probability distribution of variables in the optimal association. An efficient solution by stochastic sampling is introduced to solve the learning problem. The integer constraint is directly handled by the proposed algorithm, which is robust to network deployment and algorithm parameter choices. Simulations verify that the proposed CE approach achieves near-optimal performance quite efficiently.

Hypocoercivity based Sensitivity Analysis and Spectral Convergence of the Stochastic Galerkin Approximation to Collisional Kinetic Equations with Multiple Scales and Random Inputs

In this paper, we provide a general framework to study general class of linear and nonlinear kinetic equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, and their stochastic Galerkin approximations, in both incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler (acoustic) regimes. First, we show that the general framework put forth in [C. Mouhot and L. Neumann, Nonlinearity, 19, 969-998, 2006, M. Briant, J. Diff. Eqn., 259, 6072-6141, 2005] based on hypocoercivity for the deterministic kinetic equations can be easily adopted for sensitivity analysis for random kinetic equations, which gives rise to an exponential convergence of the random solution toward the (deterministic) global equilibrium, under suitable conditions on the collision kernel. Then we use such theory to study the stochastic Galerkin (SG) methods for the equations, establish hypocoercivity of the SG system and regularity of its solution, and spectral accuracy and exponential decay of the numerical error of the method in a weighted Sobolev norm.

Efficient Downlink Channel Reconstruction for FDD Multi-Antenna Systems

In this paper, we propose an efficient downlink channel reconstruction scheme for a frequency-division-duplex multi-antenna system by utilizing uplink channel state information combined with limited feedback. Based on the spatial reciprocity in a wireless channel, the downlink channel is reconstructed by using frequency-independent parameters. We first estimate the gains, delays, and angles during uplink sounding. The gains are then refined through downlink training and sent back to the base station (BS). With limited overhead, the refinement can substantially improve the accuracy of the downlink channel reconstruction. The BS can then reconstruct the downlink channel with the uplink-estimated delays and angles and the downlink-refined gains. We also introduce and extend the Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit (NOMP) algorithm to detect the delays and gains in a multi-antenna multi-subcarrier condition. The results of our analysis show that the extended NOMP algorithm achieves high estimation accuracy. Simulations and over-the-air tests are performed to assess the performance of the efficient downlink channel reconstruction scheme. The results show that the reconstructed channel is close to the practical channel and that the accuracy is enhanced when the number of BS antennas increases, thereby highlighting that the promising application of the proposed scheme in large-scale antenna array systems.

A Minimal Nuclear Energy Density Functional

We present a minimal nuclear energy density functional (NEDF) called "SeaLL1" that has the smallest number of possible phenomenological parameters to date. SeaLL1 is defined by 7 significant phenomenological parameters, each related to a specific nuclear property. It describes the nuclear masses of even-even nuclei with a mean energy error of 0.97 MeV and a standard deviation 1.46 MeV, two-neutron and two-proton separation energies with r.m.s. errors of 0.69 MeV and 0.59 MeV respectively, and the charge radii of 345 even-even nuclei with a mean error $ε_r=$0.022 fm and a standard deviation $σ_r=$0.025 fm. SeaLL1 incorporates constraints on the EoS of pure neutron matter from quantum Monte Carlo calculations with chiral effective field theory two-body (NN) interactions at N3LO level and three-body (NNN) interactions at the N2LO level. Two of the seven parameters are related to the saturation density and the energy per particle of the homogeneous symmetric nuclear matter, one is related to the nuclear surface tension, two are related to the symmetry energy and its density dependence, one is related to the strength of the spin-orbit interaction, and one is the coupling constant of the pairing interaction. We identify additional phenomenological parameters that have little effect on ground-state properties, but can be used to fine-tune features such as the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule, the excitation energy of the giant dipole and Gamow-Teller resonances, the static dipole electric polarizability, and the neutron skin thickness.

A Data-Aided Channel Estimation Scheme for Decoupled Systems in Heterogeneous Networks

Uplink/downlink (UL/DL) decoupling promises more flexible cell association and higher throughput in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), however, it hampers the acquisition of DL channel state information (CSI) in time-division-duplex (TDD) systems due to different base stations (BSs) connected in UL/DL. In this paper, we propose a novel data-aided (DA) channel estimation scheme to address this problem by utilizing decoded UL data to exploit CSI from received UL data signal in decoupled HetNets where a massive multiple-input multiple-output BS and dense small cell BSs are deployed. We analytically estimate BER performance of UL decoded data, which are used to derive an approximated normalized mean square error (NMSE) expression of the DA minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator. Compared with the conventional least square (LS) and MMSE, it is shown that NMSE performances of all estimators are determined by their signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-like terms and there is an increment consisting of UL data power, UL data length and BER values in the SNR-like term of DA method, which suggests DA method outperforms the conventional ones in any scenarios. Higher UL data power, longer UL data length and better BER performance lead to more accurate estimated channels with DA method. Numerical results verify that the analytical BER and NMSE results are close to the simulated ones and a remarkable gain in both NMSE and DL rate can be achieved by DA method in multiple scenarios with different modulations.

Spatial- and Frequency-Wideband Effects in Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO Systems

When there are a large number of antennas in massive MIMO systems, the transmitted wideband signal will be sensitive to the physical propagation delay of electromagnetic waves across the large array aperture, which is called the spatial-wideband effect. In this scenario, transceiver design is different from most of the existing works, which presume that the bandwidth of the transmitted signals is not that wide, ignore the spatial-wideband effect, and only address the frequency selectivity. In this paper, we investigate spatial- and frequency-wideband effects, called dual-wideband effects, in massive MIMO systems from array signal processing point of view. Taking mmWave-band communications as an example, we describe the transmission process to address the dual-wideband effects. By exploiting the channel sparsity in the angle domain and the delay domain, we develop the efficient uplink and downlink channel estimation strategies that require much less amount of training overhead and cause no pilot contamination. Thanks to the array signal processing techniques, the proposed channel estimation is suitable for both TDD and FDD massive MIMO systems. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed transmission design for massive MIMO systems can effectively deal with the dual-wideband effects.

Finite-Alphabet Precoding for Massive MU-MIMO with Low-resolution DACs

Massive multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems are expected to be the core technology in fifth-generation wireless systems because they significantly improve spectral efficiency. However, the requirement for a large number of radio frequency (RF) chains results in high hardware costs and power consumption, which obstruct the commercial deployment of massive MIMO systems. A potential solution is to use low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DAC)/analog-to-digital converters for each antenna and RF chain. However, using low-resolution DACs at the transmit side directly limits the degree of freedom of output signals and thus poses a challenge to the precoding design. In this study, we develop efficient and universal algorithms for a downlink massive MU-MIMO system with finite-alphabet precodings. Our algorithms are developed based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. The original ADMM does not converge in a nonlinear discrete optimization problem. The primary cause of this problem is that the alternating (update) directions in ADMM on one side are biased, and those on the other side are unbiased. By making the two updates consistent in an unbiased manner, we develop two algorithms called iterative discrete estimation (IDE) and IDE2: IDE demonstrates excellent performance and IDE2 possesses a significantly low computational complexity. Compared with state-of-the-art techniques, the proposed precoding algorithms present significant advantages in performance and computational complexity.

Deep Learning for Massive MIMO CSI Feedback

In frequency division duplex mode, the downlink channel state information (CSI) should be sent to the base station through feedback links so that the potential gains of a massive multiple-input multiple-output can be exhibited. However, such a transmission is hindered by excessive feedback overhead. In this letter, we use deep learning technology to develop CsiNet, a novel CSI sensing and recovery {mechanism} that learns to effectively use channel structure from training samples. CsiNet learns a transformation from CSI to a near-optimal number of representations (or codewords) and an inverse transformation from codewords to CSI. We perform experiments to demonstrate that CsiNet can recover CSI with significantly improved reconstruction quality compared with existing compressive sensing (CS)-based methods. Even at excessively low compression regions where CS-based methods cannot work, CsiNet retains effective beamforming gain.

DFT-Based Hybrid Beamforming Multiuser Systems: Rate Analysis and Beam Selection

This paper considers the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based hybrid beamforming multiuser system and studies the use of analog beam selection schemes. We first analyze the uplink ergodic achievable rates of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver and the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) receiver under Ricean fading conditions. We then examine the downlink ergodic achievable rates for the ZF and maximum-ratio transmitting (MRT) precoders. The long-term and short-term normalization methods are introduced, which utilize long-term and instantaneous channel state information (CSI) to implement the downlink power normalization, respectively. Also, approximations and asymptotic expressions of both the uplink and downlink rates are obtained, which facilitate the analog beam selection solutions to maximize the achievable rates. An exhaustive search provides the optimal results but to reduce the time-consumption, we resort to the derived rate limits and propose the second selection scheme based on the projected power of the line-of-sight (LoS) paths. We then combine the advantages of the two schemes and propose a two-step scheme that achieves near optimal performances with much less time-consumption than exhaustive search. Numerical results confirm the analytical results of the ergodic achievable rate and reveal the effectiveness of the proposed two-step method.

Efficient Channel Estimator with Angle-Division Multiple Access

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) is an enabling technology of 5G wireless communication. The performance of an M-MIMO system is highly dependent on the speed and accuracy of obtaining the channel state information (CSI). The computational complexity of channel estimation for an M-MIMO system can be reduced by making use of the sparsity of the M-MIMO channel. In this paper, we propose the hardware-efficient channel estimator based on angle-division multiple access (ADMA) for the first time. Preamble, uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) training are also implemented. For further hardware-efficiency consideration, optimization regarding quantization and approximation strategies have been discussed. Implementation techniques such as pipelining and systolic processing are also employed for hardware regularity. Numerical results and FPGA implementation have demonstrated the advantages of the proposed channel estimator.

Directional Modulation: A Secure Solution to 5G and Beyond Mobile Networks

Directional modulation (DM), as an efficient secure transmission way, offers security through its directive property and is suitable for line-of-propagation (LoP) channels such as millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), satellite communication, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and smart transportation. If the direction angle of the desired received is known, the desired channel gain vector is obtainable. Thus, in advance, the DM transmitter knows the values of directional angles of desired user and eavesdropper, or their direction of arrival (DOAs) because the beamforming vector of confidential messages and artificial noise (AN) projection matrix is mainly determined by directional angles of desired user and eavesdropper. For a DM transceiver, working as a receiver, the first step is to measure the DOAs of desired user and eavesdropper. Then, in the second step, using the measured DOAs, the beamforming vector of confidential messages and AN projection matrix is designed. In this paper, we describe the DOA measurement methods, power allocation, and beamforming in DM networks. A machine learning-based DOA measurement method is proposed to make a substantial SR performance gain compared to single-snapshot measurement without machine learning for a given null-space projection beamforming scheme. However, for a conventional DM network, there still exists a serious secure issue: the eavesdropper moves inside the main beam of the desired user and may intercept the confidential messages intended to the desired users because the beamforming vector of confidential messages and AN projection matrix are only angle-dependence. To address this problem, we present a new concept of secure and precise transmission, where the transmit waveform has two-dimensional even three-dimensional dependence by using DM, random frequency selection, and phase alignment at DM transmitter.

A Low-Resolution ADC Module Assisted Hybrid Beamforming Architecture for mmWave Communications

We propose a low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) module assisted hybrid beamforming architecture for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications. We prove that the proposed low-cost and flexible architecture can reduce the beam training time and complexity dramatically without degradation in the data transmission performance. In addition, we design a fast beam training method which is suitable for the proposed system architecture. The proposed beam training method requires only L + 1 (where L is the number of paths) time slots which is smaller compared to the state-of-the-art.

Bayesian Optimal Data Detector for Hybrid mmWave MIMO-OFDM Systems with Low-Resolution ADCs

Hybrid analog-digital precoding architectures and low-resolution analog-to-digital converter (ADC) receivers are two solutions to reduce hardware cost and power consumption for millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with large antenna arrays. In this study, we consider a mmWave MIMO-OFDM receiver with a generalized hybrid architecture in which a small number of radio-frequency (RF) chains and low-resolution ADCs are employed simultaneously. Owing to the strong nonlinearity introduced by low-resolution ADCs, the task of data detection is challenging, particularly achieving a Bayesian optimal data detector. This study aims to fill this gap. By using generalized expectation consistent signal recovery technique, we propose a computationally efficient data detection algorithm that provides a minimum mean-square error estimate on data symbols and is extended to a mixed-ADC architecture. Considering particular structure of MIMO-OFDM channel matirx, we provide a lowcomplexity realization in which only FFT operation and matrixvector multiplications are required. Furthermore, we present an analytical framework to study the theoretical performance of the detector in the large-system limit, which can precisely evaluate the performance expressions such as mean-square error and symbol error rate. Based on this optimal detector, the potential of adding a few low-resolution RF chains and high-resolution ADCs for mixed-ADC architecture is investigated. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of our theoretical analysis and can be used for system design rapidly. The results reveal that adding a few low-resolution RF chains to original unquantized systems can obtain significant gains.

Time Varying Channel Tracking with Spatial and Temporal BEM for Massive MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a channel tracking method for massive multi-input and multi-output systems under both time-varying and spatial-varying circumstance. Exploiting the characteristics of massive antenna array, a spatial-temporal basis expansion model is designed to reduce the effective dimensions of up-link and down-link channel, which decomposes channel state information into the time-varying spatial information and gain information. We firstly model the users movements as a one-order unknown Markov process, which is blindly learned by the expectation and maximization (EM) approach. Then, the up-link time varying spatial information can be blindly tracked by Taylor series expansion of the steering vector, while the rest up-link channel gain information can be trained by only a few pilot symbols. Due to angle reciprocity (spatial reciprocity), the spatial information of the down-link channel can be immediately obtained from the up-link counterpart, which greatly reduces the complexity of down-link channel tracking. Various numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Implementation of Massive MIMO Uplink Receiver on RaPro Prototyping Platform

The updated physical layer standard of the fifth generation wireless communication suggests the necessity of a rapid prototyping platform. To this end, we develop RaPro, a multi-core general purpose processor-based massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) prototyping platform. To enhance RaPro, high performance detection and beamforming are needed, whereas both of them request for accurate channel state information (CSI). In this paper, linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based channel estimator is adopted and encapsulated inside RaPro to gain more accurate CSI. Considering the high comlexity and unknown of channel statistics, we design low-complexity LMMSE channel estimator to alleviate the rising complexity along with increasing antenna number and set more computational resource aside for massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink beamforming. Simulation results indicate the high mean square error performance and robustness of designed low-complexity method. Indoor and corridor scenario tests show prominent improvement in bit error rate performance. Time cost analysis proves the practical use and real-time transmission ability of the implemented uplink receiver on RaPro.

Enhancing Performance of Random Caching in Large-Scale Heterogeneous Wireless Networks with Random Discontinuous Transmission

To make better use of file diversity provided by random caching and improve the successful transmission probability (STP) of a file, we consider retransmissions with random discontinuous transmission (DTX) in a large-scale cache-enabled heterogeneous wireless network (HetNet) employing random caching. We analyze and optimize the STP in two mobility scenarios, i.e., the high mobility scenario and the static scenario. First, in each scenario, by using tools from stochastic geometry, we obtain the closed-form expressions for the STP in the general and low signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) threshold regimes, respectively. The analysis shows that a larger caching probability corresponds to a higher STP in both scenarios; random DTX can improve the STP in the static scenario and its benefit gradually diminishes when mobility increases. Then, in each scenario, we consider the maximization of the STP with respect to the caching probability and the BS activity probability, which is a challenging non-convex optimization problem. In particular, in the high mobility scenario, we obtain a globally optimal solution using interior point method. In the static scenario, we develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm to obtain a stationary point using alternating optimization. Finally, numerical results show that the proposed solutions achieve significant gains over existing baseline schemes and can well adapt to the changes of the system parameters to wisely utilize storage resources and transmission opportunities.
