Data-Aided Secure Massive MIMO Transmission with Active Eavesdropping

In this paper, we study the design of secure communication for time division duplexing multi-cell multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with active eavesdropping. We assume that the eavesdropper actively attacks the uplink pilot transmission and the uplink data transmission before eavesdropping the downlink data transmission phase of the desired users. We exploit both the received pilots and data signals for uplink channel estimation. We show analytically that when the number of transmit antennas and the length of the data vector both tend to infinity, the signals of the desired user and the eavesdropper lie in different eigenspaces of the received signal matrix at the base station if their signal powers are different. This finding reveals that decreasing (instead of increasing) the desire user's signal power might be an effective approach to combat a strong active attack from an eavesdropper. Inspired by this result, we propose a data-aided secure downlink transmission scheme and derive an asymptotic achievable secrecy sum-rate expression for the proposed design. Numerical results indicate that under strong active attacks, the proposed design achieves significant secrecy rate gains compared to the conventional design employing matched filter precoding and artificial noise generation.

A study of Landau damping with random initial inputs

For the Vlasov-Poisson equation with random uncertain initial data, we prove that the Landau damping solution given by the deterministic counterpart (Caglioti and Maffei, {\it J. Stat. Phys.}, 92:301-323, 1998) depends smoothly on the random variable if the time asymptotic profile does, under the smoothness and smallness assumptions similar to the deterministic case. The main idea is to generalize the deterministic contraction argument to more complicated function spaces to estimate derivatives in space, velocity and random variables. This result suggests that the random space regularity can persist in long-time even in time-reversible nonlinear kinetic equations.

Local sensitivity analysis for the Cucker-Smale model with random inputs

We present pathwise flocking dynamics and local sensitivity analysis for the Cucker-Smale(C-S) model with random communications and initial data. For the deterministic communications, it is well known that the C-S model can model emergent local and global flocking dynamics depending on initial data and integrability of communication function. However, the communication mechanism between agents are not a priori clear and needs to be figured out from observed phenomena and data. Thus, uncertainty in communication is an intrinsic component in the flocking modeling of the C-S model. In this paper, we provide a class of admissible random uncertainties which allows us to perform the local sensitivity analysis for flocking and establish stability to the random C-S model with uncertain communication.

Robust Beamforming for Physical Layer Security in BDMA Massive MIMO

In this paper, we design robust beamforming to guarantee the physical layer security for a multiuser beam division multiple access (BDMA) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, when the channel estimation errors are taken into consideration. With the aid of artificial noise (AN), the proposed design are formulated as minimizing the transmit power of the base station (BS), while providing legal users and the eavesdropper (Eve) with different signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). It is strictly proved that, under BDMA massive MIMO scheme, the initial non-convex optimization can be equivalently converted to a convex semi-definite programming (SDP) problem and the optimal rank-one beamforming solutions can be guaranteed. In stead of directly resorting to the convex tool, we make one step further by deriving the optimal beamforming direction and the optimal beamforming power allocation in closed-form, which greatly reduces the computational complexity and makes the proposed design practical for real world applications. Simulation results are then provided to verify the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Deep Learning for Wireless Physical Layer: Opportunities and Challenges

Machine learning (ML) has been widely applied to the upper layers of wireless communication systems for various purposes, such as deployment of cognitive radio and communication network. However, its application to the physical layer is hampered by sophisticated channel environments and limited learning ability of conventional ML algorithms. Deep learning (DL) has been recently applied for many fields, such as computer vision and natural language processing, given its expressive capacity and convenient optimization capability. The potential application of DL to the physical layer has also been increasingly recognized because of the new features for future communications, such as complex scenarios with unknown channel models, high speed and accurate processing requirements; these features challenge conventional communication theories. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the emerging studies on DL-based physical layer processing, including leveraging DL to redesign a module of the conventional communication system (for modulation recognition, channel decoding, and detection) and replace the communication system with a radically new architecture based on an autoencoder. These DL-based methods show promising performance improvements but have certain limitations, such as lack of solid analytical tools and use of architectures that are specifically designed for communication and implementation research, thereby motivating future research in this field.

Large-Scale 3D Shape Reconstruction and Segmentation from ShapeNet Core55

We introduce a large-scale 3D shape understanding benchmark using data and annotation from ShapeNet 3D object database. The benchmark consists of two tasks: part-level segmentation of 3D shapes and 3D reconstruction from single view images. Ten teams have participated in the challenge and the best performing teams have outperformed state-of-the-art approaches on both tasks. A few novel deep learning architectures have been proposed on various 3D representations on both tasks. We report the techniques used by each team and the corresponding performances. In addition, we summarize the major discoveries from the reported results and possible trends for the future work in the field.

Hypocoercivity and Uniform Regularity for the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck System with Uncertainty and Multiple Scales

We study the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system with uncertainty and multiple scales. Here the uncertainty, modeled by random variables, enters the solution through initial data, while the multiple scales lead the system to its high-field or parabolic regimes. With the help of proper Lyapunov-type inequalities, under some mild conditions on the initial data, the regularity of the solution in the random space, as well as exponential decay of the solution to the global Maxwellian, are established under Sobolev norms, which are ${\it uniform}$ in terms of the scaling parameters. These are the first hypocoercivity results for a nonlinear kinetic system with random input, which are important for the understanding of the sensitivity of the system under random perturbations, and for the establishment of spectral convergence of popular numerical methods for uncertainty quantification based on (spectrally accurate) polynomial chaos expansions.

A High Order Stochastic Asymptotic Preserving Scheme for Chemotaxis Kinetic Models with Random Inputs

In this paper, we develop a stochastic Asymptotic-Preserving (sAP) scheme for the kinetic chemotaxis system with random inputs, which will converge to the modified Keller-Segel model with random inputs in the diffusive regime. Based on the generalized Polynomial Chaos (gPC) approach, we design a high order stochastic Galerkin method using implicit-explicit (IMEX) Runge-Kutta (RK) time discretization with a macroscopic penalty term. The new schemes improve the parabolic CFL condition to a hyperbolic type when the mean free path is small, which shows significant efficiency especially in uncertainty quantification (UQ) with multi-scale problems. The stochastic Asymptotic-Preserving property will be shown asymptotically and verified numerically in several tests. Many other numerical tests are conducted to explore the effect of the randomness in the kinetic system, in the aim of providing more intuitions for the theoretic study of the chemotaxis models.

Channel Estimation for TDD/FDD Massive MIMO Systems with Channel Covariance Computing

In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation scheme for TDD/FDD massive MIMO systems by reconstructing uplink/downlink channel covariance matrices (CCMs) with the aid of array signal processing techniques. Specifically, the angle information and power angular spectrum (PAS) of each multi-path channel is extracted from the instantaneous uplink channel state information (CSI). Then, the uplink CCM is reconstructed and can be used to improve the uplink channel estimation without any additional training cost. In virtue of angle reciprocity as well as PAS reciprocity between uplink and downlink channels, the downlink CCM could also be inferred with a similar approach even for FDD massive MIMO systems. Then, the downlink instantaneous CSI can be obtained by training towards the dominant eigen-directions of each user. The proposed strategy is applicable for any kind of PAS distributions and array geometries. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods over the existing ones.

Beam Tracking for UAV Mounted SatCom on-the-Move with Massive Antenna Array

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-satellite communication has drawn dramatic attention for its potential to build the integrated space-air-ground network and the seamless wide-area coverage. The key challenge to UAV-satellite communication is its unstable beam pointing due to the UAV navigation, which is a typical SatCom on-the-move scenario. In this paper, we propose a blind beam tracking approach for Ka-band UAVsatellite communication system, where UAV is equipped with a large-scale antenna array. The effects of UAV navigation are firstly released through the mechanical adjustment, which could approximately point the beam towards the target satellite through beam stabilization and dynamic isolation. Specially, the attitude information can be realtimely derived from data fusion of lowcost sensors. Then, the precision of the beam pointing is blindly refined through electrically adjusting the weight of the massive antennas, where an array structure based simultaneous perturbation algorithm is designed. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the existing ones.

A New Look at Physical Layer Security, Caching, and Wireless Energy Harvesting for Heterogeneous Ultra-dense Networks

Heterogeneous ultra-dense networks enable ultra-high data rates and ultra-low latency through the use of dense sub-6 GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) small cells with different antenna configurations. Existing work has widely studied spectral and energy efficiency in such networks and shown that high spectral and energy efficiency can be achieved. This article investigates the benefits of heterogeneous ultra-dense network architecture from the perspectives of three promising technologies, i.e., physical layer security, caching, and wireless energy harvesting, and provides enthusiastic outlook towards application of these technologies in heterogeneous ultra-dense networks. Based on the rationale of each technology, opportunities and challenges are identified to advance the research in this emerging network.

Spectral Efficiency of Multipair Massive MIMO Two-Way Relaying with Hardware Impairments

We consider a multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way relaying system, where multiple pairs of single-antenna devices exchange data with the help of a relay employing a large number of antennas $N$. The relay consists of low-cost components that suffer from hardware impairments. A large-scale approximation of the spectral efficiency (SE) with maximum ratio (MR) processing is derived in closed form, and the approximation is tight as $N \to \infty$. It is revealed that for a fixed hardware quality, the impact of the hardware impairments vanishes asymptotically when $N$ grows large. Moreover, the impact of the impairments may even vanish when the hardware quality is gradually decreased with $N$, if a scaling law is satisfied. Finally, numerical results validate that multipair massive MIMO two-way relaying systems are robust to hardware impairments at the relay.

An Efficient Time-splitting Method for the Ehrenfest Dynamics

The Ehrenfest dynamics, representing a quantum-classical mean-field type coupling, is a widely used approximation in quantum molecular dynamics. In this paper, we propose a time-splitting method for an Ehrenfest dynamics, in the form of a nonlinearly coupled Schrödinger-Liouville system. We prove that our splitting scheme is stable uniformly with respect to the semiclassical parameter, and, moreover, that it preserves a discrete semiclassical limit. Thus one can accurately compute physical observables using time steps induced only by the classical Liouville equation, i.e., independent of the small semiclassical parameter - in addition to classical mesh sizes for the Liouville equation. Numerical examples illustrate the validity of our meshing strategy.

Multipair Massive MIMO Two-Way Full-Duplex Relay Systems with Hardware Impairments

Hardware impairments, such as phase noise, quantization errors, non-linearities, and noise amplification, have baneful effects on wireless communications. In this paper, we investigate the effect of hardware impairments on multipair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way full-duplex relay systems with amplify-and-forward scheme. More specifically, novel closed-form approximate expressions for the spectral efficiency are derived to obtain some important insights into the practical design of the considered system. When the number of relay antennas $N$ increases without bound, we propose a hardware scaling law, which reveals that the level of hardware impairments that can be tolerated is roughly proportional to $\sqrt{N}$. This new result inspires us to design low-cost and practical multipair massive MIMO two-way full-duplex relay systems. Moreover, the optimal number of relay antennas is derived to maximize the energy efficiency. Finally, Motor-Carlo simulation results are provided to validate our analytical results.

Dynamics of Fragmented Condensates and Macroscopic Entanglement

The relative phase of the order parameters in the collision of two condensates can influence the outcome of their collision in the case of weak coupling. With increasing interaction strength however, the initially independent phases of the two order parameters in the colliding partners quickly become phase locked, as the strong coupling favors an overall phase rigidity of the entire condensate, and upon their separation the emerging superfluid fragments become entangled.

Beamspace Channel Estimation in mmWave Systems via Cosparse Image Reconstruction Technique

This paper considers the beamspace channel estimation problem in 3D lens antenna array under a millimeter-wave communication system. We analyze the focusing capability of the 3D lens antenna array and the sparsity of the beamspace channel response matrix. Considering the analysis, we observe that the channel matrix can be treated as a 2D natural image; that is, the channel is sparse, and the changes between adjacent elements are subtle. Thus, for the channel estimation, we incorporate an image reconstruction technique called sparse non-informative parameter estimator-based cosparse analysis AMP for imaging (SCAMPI) algorithm. The SCAMPI algorithm is faster and more accurate than earlier algorithms such as orthogonal matching pursuit and support detection algorithms. To further improve the SCAMPI algorithm, we model the channel distribution as a generic Gaussian mixture (GM) probability and embed the expectation maximization learning algorithm into the SCAMPI algorithm to learn the parameters in the GM probability. We show that the GM probability outperforms the common uniform distribution used in image reconstruction. We also propose a phase-shifter-reduced selection network structure to decrease the power consumption of the system and prove that the SCAMPI algorithm is robust even if the number of phase shifters is reduced by 10%.

A New View of Multi-User Hybrid Massive MIMO: Non-Orthogonal Angle Division Multiple Access

This paper presents a new view of multi-user (MU) hybrid massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems from array signal processing perspective. We first show that the instantaneous channel vectors corresponding to different users are asymptotically orthogonal if the angles of arrival (AOAs) of users are different. We then decompose the channel matrix into an angle domain basis matrix and a gain matrix. The former can be formulated by steering vectors and the latter has the same size as the number of RF chains, which perfectly matches the structure of hybrid precoding. A novel hybrid channel estimation is proposed by separately estimating the angle information and the gain matrix, which could significantly save the training overhead and substantially improve the channel estimation accuracy compared to the conventional beamspace approach. Moreover, with the aid of the angle domain matrix, the MU massive MIMO system can be viewed as a type of non-orthogonal angle division multiple access (ADMA) to simultaneously serve multiple users at the same frequency band. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is validated by computer simulation results.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency of Multi-pair Massive MIMO Relay Network with Hybrid Processing

We consider a multi-pair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network, where the relay is equipped with a large number, N, of antennas, but driven by a far smaller number, L, of radio frequency (RF) chains. We assume that K pairs of users are scheduled for simultaneous transmission, where K satisfies 2K = L. A hybrid signal processing scheme is presented for both uplink and downlink transmissions of the network. Analytical expressions of both spectral and energy efficiency are derived with respect to the RF chain number under imperfect channel estimation. It is revealed that, under the condition N > 4L^2/pi, the transmit power of each user and the relay can be respectively scaled down by 1=sqrt(N) and 2K=sqrt(N) if pilot power scales with signal power, or they can be respectively scaled down by 1=N and 2K=N if the pilot power is kept fixed, while maintaining an asymptotically unchanged spectral efficiency (SE). While regarding energy efficiency (EE) of the network, the optimal EE is shown to be achieved when Pr = 2KPs, where Pr and Ps respectively refer to the transmit power of the relay and each source terminal. We show that the network EE is a quasi-concave function with respect to the number of RF-chains which, therefore, admits a unique globally optimal choice of the RF-chain number. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify our observations.
