Dynamical revival of phase coherence in a many-boson system

We study the quantum dynamics of cold Bose atoms in a double well. It is shown that self-trapping, as well as population oscillations are common phenomena associated to nonlinear interactions. For larger $U/t$, multi-particle tunneling is damped and the quantum dynamics is dominated by the single-particle tunneling. The many-body system can be effectively described in a truncated Fock space. It exhibits coherence-decoherence oscillations in the temporal evolution. We predict a novel phenomenon of dynamical revival and collapse of matter wave fields in optical lattices in regimes near the superfluid-Mott insulator phase boundary.

Solitons and vortices in an evolving Bose-Einstein condensate

Spatiotemporal evolution of a confined Bose-Einstein condensate is studied by numerically integrating the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Self-interference between the successively expanding and reflecting nonlinear matter waves results in spiral atomic density profile, which subsequently degenerates into an embedding structure: The inner part preserves memory of the initial states while the outer part forms a sequence of necklacelike rings. The phase plot reveals a series of discrete concentric belts. The large gradients between adjacent belts indicate that the ring density notches are dark solitons. In the dynamical process, a scenario of vortex-antivortex pairs are spontaneously created and annihilated, whereas the total vorticity keeps invariant.

Giant vortex and Skyrmion in a rotating two-species Bose-Einstein condensate

Numerical simulations are performed for a rotating two-species Bose condensate confined by a harmonic potential. The particle numbers of each species are unequal. When the rotational speed exceeds a critical value, the majority species reside in the center of the potential while the minority species is pushed out to the outskirts, forming a giant vortex hole to contain the majority species. A novel annular Skyrmion forms at the interface of the two species.

The Extended Bose Hubbard Model on the Two Dimensional Honeycomb Lattice

We study the extended Bose-Hubbard model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice by using large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We present the ground state phase diagrams for both the hard-core case and the soft-core case. For the hard-core case, the transition between $ρ=1/2$ solid and the superfluid is first order and the supersolid state is unstable towards phase separation. For the soft-core case, due to the presence of the multiple occupation, a stable particle induced supersolid (SS-p) phase emerges when $1/2<ρ<1$. The transition from the solid at $ρ=1/2$ to the SS-p is second order with the superfluid density scaling as $ ρ_{s} \sim ρ-1/2 $. The SS-p has the same diagonal order as the solid at $ ρ=1/2 $. As the chemical potential increasing further, the SS-p will turn into a solid where two bosons occupying each site of a sublattice through a first order transition. We also calculate the critical exponents of the transition between $ρ=1/2$ solid and superfluid at the Heisenberg point for the hard core case. We find the dynamical critical exponent $z=0.15$, which is smaller than results obtained on smaller lattices. This indicates that $ z $ approaches zero in the thermodynamic limit, so the transition is also first order even at the Heisenberg point.

Generating multi-scaling networks with different types of nodes

A variety of scale-free networks have been created since the pioneer work by A.-L. Barabási and R. Albert. All this networks are homogeneous since they are composed of the same kind of nodes. In the realistic world, however, one element (node or vertex) in the network may play different roles and hence has different functions. In this Letter, we develop a new kind of network to account for this property. In our model, each type of nodes may exhibit a scaling law in the degree distribution and the scaling exponents are adjustable. As a consequence, the whole network lacks of such scaling characteristics, which indicates that many previous statistical results based on empirical data that claimed to be scale-free networks may need to be reexamined. This model poses an alternative way of the network division other than the module method. Besides, one can expect that this new network will exhibit some interesting properties concerning the dynamical processes on it.

Anisotropic transport for $ν=2/5$ FQH state at intermediate magnetic field

The $ν=2/5$ state is spin-unpolarized at weak magnetic field and fully polarized at strong field. At intermediate field, a plateau of half the maximal polarization is observed. We study this phenomenon in the frame of composite fermion theory. Due to the mixing of the composite fermion Landau levels, the unidirectional charge/spin density wave state of composite fermions is lower in energy than the Wigner crystal. It means that transport anisotropy, similar to those for electrons in higher Landau levels at half fillings, may take place at this fractional quantum Hall state when the external magnetic field is in an appropriate range. When the magnetic field is tilted an angle, the easy transport direction is perpendicular to the direction of the in-plane field. Varying the partial filling factor of composite fermion Landau level from 0 to 1, we find that the energy minimum occurs in the vicinity of one-half.

Interaction of a surface acoustic wave with a two-dimensional electron gas

When a surface acoustic wave propagates on the surface of a GaAs semiconductor, coupling between electrons in the two-dimensional electron gas beneath the interface and the elastic host crystal through piezoelectric interaction will attenuate the SAW. The coupling coefficient is calculated for the SAW propagating along an arbitrary direction. It is found that the coupling strength is largely dependent on the propagating direction. When the SAW propagates along the [011] direction, the coupling becomes quite weak.

Target-searching on the percolation

We study target-searching processes on a percolation, on which a hunter tracks a target by smelling odors it emits. The odor intensity is supposed to be inversely proportional to the distance it propagates. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed on a 2-dimensional bond-percolation above the threshold. Having no idea of the location of the target, the hunter determines its moves only by random attempts in each direction. For lager percolation connectivity $p\gtrsim 0.90$, it reveals a scaling law for the searching time versus the distance to the position of the target. The scaling exponent is dependent on the sensitivity of the hunter. For smaller $p$, the scaling law is broken and the probability of finding out the target significantly reduces. The hunter seems trapped in the cluster of the percolation and can hardly reach the goal.

Effect of a tilted magnetic field on the orientation of Wigner crystals

We study the effect of a tilted magnetic field on the orientation of Wigner crystals by taking account of the width of a quantum well in the $z$-direction. It is found that the cohesive energy of the electronic crystal is always lower for the $[110]$ direction parallel to the in-plane field. In a realistic sample, a domain structure forms in the electronic solid and each domain orients randomly when the magnetic field is normal to the quantum well. As the field is tilted an angle, the electronic crystal favors to align along a preferred direction which is determined by the in-plane magnetic field. The orientation stabilization is strengthened for wider quantum wells as well as for larger tilted angles. Possible consequence of the tilted field on the transport property in the electronic solid is discussed.

Temperature dependence of the conductivity of the electronic crystal

We study the temperature dependence of the conductivity of the 2D electronic solid. In realistic samples, a domain structure forms in the solid and each domain randomly orients in the absence of the in-plane field. At higher temperature, the electron transport is governed by thermal activation form of $σ_{xx}(T)\propto e^{-Δ_0/k_BT}$. The impurities will localize the electron states along the edges of the crystal domains. At sufficient low temperature, another transport mechanism called Mott's variable range hopping mechanism, similar to that in a disorder insulator takes effect. We show that as the temperature decreases, a crossover from the fixed range hopping of the transport to the variable range hopping of transport in the 2D electron system may be experimentally observed.

Exploring complex networks by walking on them

We carry out a comparative study on the problem for a walker searching on several typical complex networks. The search efficiency is evaluated for various strategies. Having no knowledge of the global properties of the underlying networks and the optimal path between any two given nodes, it is found that the best search strategy is the self-avoid random walk. The preferentially self-avoid random walk does not help in improving the search efficiency further. In return, topological information of the underlying networks may be drawn by comparing the results of the different search strategies.

Scaling law in target-hunting processes

We study the hunting process for a target, in which the hunter tracks the goal by smelling odors it emits. The odor intensity is supposed to decrease with the distance it diffuses. The Monte Carlo experiment is carried out on a 2-dimensional square lattice. Having no idea of the location of the target, the hunter determines its moves only by random attempts in each direction. By sorting the searching time in each simulation and introducing a variable $x$ to reflect the sequence of searching time, we obtain a curve with a wide plateau, indicating a most probable time of successfully finding out the target. The simulations reveal a scaling law for the searching time versus the distance to the position of the target. The scaling exponent depends on the sensitivity of the hunter. Our model may be a prototype in studying such the searching processes as various foods-foraging behavior of the wild animals.

Density-induced reorientation of the stripe at half-filled high Landau levels

The effect of a unidirectional periodic potential on the orientation of the stripe state is studied for the two-dimensional electron system at half-filled high Landau levels. By considering a quantum well with two electric subbands, it is found that the stripe is parallel to the external potential for weak modulation and is orthogonal for strong modulation. In the intermediate range, the orientation of the stripe changes from orthogonal to parallel as the electron density is increased. This result explains the recent experiment performed by J. Zhu {\it et al} that the anisotropy axis at half-filled high Landau levels rotates by $90^0$ by increasing the electron density. It also supports the suggestion that the stripes is pinned by the native surface morphology at the interface of the heterojunction.

Paired Hall States versus Unidirectional CDW in Tilted Field for $ν={5/2}$

We formulate the composite fermions in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. As the in-plane field increases, if we assume the state at $ν=5/2$ turns into the mixed state between the unidirectional charge density wave domains and paired Hall state, we can phenomenologically fit the theoretically defined gap to the experimental measured results. We explain the destruction of the paired Hall states and then a phase transition from the paired Hall state to the unidirectional charge density wave from a symmetry point of view.

Possible composite-fermion liquid as a crossover from Wigner crystal to bubble phase in higher Landau level

The ground state cohesive energies per electron of the composite fermion (CF) Fermi sea, the Laughlin state and the charge density wave (CDW) at higher Landau levels (LLs) are computed. It is shown that whereas for $n\geq 2$ LL, the CDW state is generally more energetically preferable than those of the CF liquid and the Laughlin liquid, the $ν=4+1/6$ CF liquid state unexpectedly has lower ground state energy than that of the CDW state. We suggest this CF liquid between the Wigner crystal and the bubble phase may lead to the crossover from the normal integer quantum Hall liquid to the novel re-entrant integer quantum Hall state observed in the recent magneto-transport experiments.
