Spin structures and codimension-two homeomorphism extensions

Let $\imath: M\to \RR^{p+2}$ be a smooth embedding from a connected, oriented, closed $p$-dimesional smooth manifold to $\RR^{p+2}$, then there is a spin structure $\imath^\sharp(ς^{p+2})$ on $M$ canonically induced from the embedding. If an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism $τ$ of $M$ extends over $\imath$ as an orientation-preserving topological homeomorphism of $\RR^{p+2}$, then $τ$ preserves the induced spin structure. Let $\esg_\cat(\imath)$ be the subgroup of the $\cat$-mapping class group $\mcg_\cat(M)$ consisting of elements whose representatives extend over $\RR^{p+2}$ as orientation-preserving $\cat$-homeomorphisms, where $\cat=\topo$, $\pl$ or $\diff$. The invariance of $\imath^\sharp(ς^{p+2})$ gives nontrivial lower bounds to $[\mcg_\cat(M):\esg_\cat(\imath)]$ in various special cases. We apply this to embedded surfaces in $\RR^4$ and embedded $p$-dimensional tori in $\RR^{p+2}$. In particular, in these cases the index lower bounds for $\esg_\topo(\imath)$ are achieved for unknotted embeddings.

On fibered commensurability

This paper initiates a systematic study of the relation of commensurability of surface automorphisms, or equivalently, fibered commensurability of 3-manifolds fibering over the circle. We show that every hyperbolic fibered commensurability class contains a unique minimal element, whereas the class of Seifert manifolds fibering over the circle consists of a single commensurability class with infinitely many minimal elements. The situation for non-geometric manifolds is more complicated, and we illustrate a range of phenomena that can occur in this context.

Graph manifolds have virtually positive Seifert volume

This paper shows that the Seifert volume of each closed non-trivial graph manifold is virtually positive. As a consequence, for each closed orientable prime 3-manifold $N$, the set of mapping degrees $cD(M,N)$ is finite for any 3-manifold $M$, unless $N$ is finitely covered by either a torus bundle, or a trivial circle bundle, or the 3-sphere.

Only rational homology spheres admit $Ω(f)$ to be union of DE attractors

If there exists a diffeomorphism $f$ on a closed, orientable $n$-manifold $M$ such that the non-wandering set $Ω(f)$ consists of finitely many orientable $(\pm)$ attractors derived from expanding maps, then $M$ must be a rational homology sphere; moreover all those attractors are of topological dimension $n-2$. Expanding maps are expanding on (co)homologies.

Roots of torsion polynomials and dominations

We show that the nonzero roots of the torsion polynomials associated to the infinite cyclic covers of a given compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold M are contained in a compact part of the complex plane a priori determined by M. This result is applied to prove that when M is closed, it dominates at most finitely many Sol manifolds.

Simon's conjecture for 2-bridge knots

It is conjectured that for each knot $K$ in $S^3$, the fundamental group of its complement surjects onto only finitely many distinct knot groups. Applying character variety theory we obtain an affirmative solution of the conjecture for a class of small knots that includes 2-bridge knots.

Finiteness of mapping degrees and ${\rm PSL}(2,{\R})$-volume on graph manifolds

For given closed orientable 3-manifolds $M$ and $N$ let $cD(M,N)$ be the set of mapping degrees from $M$ to $N$. We address the problem: For which $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all $M$? The answer is known in Thurston's picture of closed orientable irreducible 3-manifolds unless the target is a non-trivial graph manifold. We prove that for each closed non-trivial graph manifold $N$, $cD(M,N)$ is finite for all graph manifold $M$. The proof uses a recently developed standard forms of maps between graph manifolds and the estimation of the $\widetilde{\rm PSL}(2,{\R})$-volume for certain class of graph manifolds.

Self-mapping degrees of torus bundles and torus semi-bundles

Each closed oriented 3-manifold $M$ is naturally associated with a set of integers $D(M)$, the degrees of all self-maps on $M$. $D(M)$ is determined for each torus bundle and torus semi-bundle $M$. The structure of torus semi-bundle is studied in detail. The paper is a part of a project to determine $D(M)$ for all 3-manifolds in Thurston's picture.

Additivity of Heegaard genera of bounded surface sums

Let $M$ be a surface sum of 3-manifolds $M_1$ and $M_2$ along a bounded connected surface $F$ and $\partial_i$ be the component of $\partial M_i$ containing $F$. If $M_i$ has a high distance Heegaard splitting, then any minimal Heegaard splitting of $M$ is the amalgamation of those of $M^1, M^2$ and $M^*$, where $M^i=M_i\setminus\partial_i\times I$, and $M^{*}=\partial_1\times I\cup_{F} \partial_2\times I$. Furthermore, once both $\partial_i\setminus F$ are connected, then $g(M) = Min\bigl\{g(M_1)+g(M_2), α\bigr\}$, where $α= g(M_1) + g(M_2) + 1/2(2χ(F) + 2 - χ(\partial_1) - χ(\partial_2)) - Max\bigl\{g(\partial_1), g(\partial_2)\bigl\}$; in particular $g(M)=g(M_1)+g(M_2)$ if and only if $χ(F)\geq 1/2Max\bigl\{χ(\partial_1), χ(\partial_2)\bigr\}.$ The proofs rely on Scharlemann-Tomova's theorem.

On standard forms of 1--dominations between knots with same Gromov volumes

Let $k$ and $k'$ be two knots in 3-sphere. Say $k$ 1--dominates $k'$, if there is a proper degree 1 map $f\co E(k)\to E(k')$, between knot exterior of $k_i$. Theorem: Suppose that any companion of $k$ is prime. If $k$ 1--dominates $k'$ with the same Gromov volume, then $k'$ can be obtained from $k$ by finitely many de-satellizations. The condition of "same Gromov volume" clearly can not be removed. We also give a new construction of 1-domination between knots with same Gromov volume to show that the condition "any companion of $k$ is prime" can not be removed.

On tame embeddings of solenoids into 3-space

Solenoids are ``inverse limits'' of the circle, and the classical knot theory is the theory of tame embeddings of the circle into the 3-space. We give some general study, including certain classification results, of tame embeddings of solenoids into the 3-space as the ``inverse limits'' of the tame embeddings of the circle. Some applications are discussed. In particular, there are ``tamely'' embedded solenoids $Σ\subset \R^3$ which are strictly achiral. Since solenoids are non-planar, this contrasts sharply with the known fact that if there is a strictly achiral embedding $Y\subset \R^3$ of a compact polyhedron $Y$, then $Y$ must be planar.

Handle additions producing essential surfaces

We construct a small, hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ such that, for any integer $g\geq 2$, there are infinitely many separating slopes $r$ in $\partial M$ so that $M(r)$, the 3-manifold obtained by attaching a 2-handle to $M$ along $r$, is hyperbolic and contains an essential separating closed surface of genus $g$. The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results on Dehn filling, and it also contrasts sharply with the known finiteness result on handle addition for the cases $g=0,1$. Our 3-manifold $M$ is the complement of a hyperbolic, small knot in a handlebody of genus 3.
