Pseudo-Anosov extensions and degree one maps between hyperbolic surface bundles

Let $F',F$ be any two closed orientable surfaces of genus $g'>g\ge 1$, and $f:F\to F$ be any pseudo-Anosov map. Then we can "extend" $f$ to be a pseudo-Anosov map $f':F'\to F'$ so that there is a fiber preserving degree one map $M(F',f')\to M(F,f)$ between the hyperbolic surface bundles. Moreover the extension $f'$ can be chosen so that the surface bundles $M(F',f')$ and $M(F,f)$ have the same first Betti numbers.

On embedding all $n$-manifolds into a single $(n+1)$-manifold

For each composite number $n\ne 2^k$, there does not exist a single connected closed $(n+1)$-manifold such that any smooth, simply-connected, closed $n$-manifold can be topologically flat embedded into it. There is a single connected closed 5-manifold $W$ such that any simply-connected, 4-manifold $M$ can be topologically flat embedded into $W$ if $M$ is either closed and indefinite, or compact and with non-empty boundary.

Embedding infinite cyclic covers of knot spaces into 3-space

We say a knot $k$ in the 3-sphere $\mathbb S^3$ has {\it Property $IE$} if the infinite cyclic cover of the knot exterior embeds into $\mathbb S^3$. Clearly all fibred knots have Property $IE$. There are infinitely many non-fibred knots with Property $IE$ and infinitely many non-fibred knots without property $IE$. Both kinds of examples are established here for the first time. Indeed we show that if a genus 1 non-fibred knot has Property $IE$, then its Alexander polynomial $Δ_k(t)$ must be either 1 or $2t^2-5t+2$, and we give two infinite families of non-fibred genus 1 knots with Property $IE$ and having $Δ_k(t)=1$ and $2t^2-5t+2$ respectively. Hence among genus one non-fibred knots, no alternating knot has Property $IE$, and there is only one knot with Property $IE$ up to ten crossings. We also give an obstruction to embedding infinite cyclic covers of a compact 3-manifold into any compact 3-manifold.

3-manifolds that admit knotted solenoids as attractors

Motivated by the study in Morse theory and Smale's work in dynamics, the following questions are studied and answered: (1) When does a 3-manifold admit an automorphism having a knotted Smale solenoid as an attractor? (2) When does a 3-manifold admit an automorphism whose non-wandering set consists of Smale solenoids? The result presents some intrinsic symmetries for a class of 3-manifolds.

Non-zero degree maps between $2n$-manifolds

Thom-Pontrjagin constructions are used to give a computable necessary and sufficient condition when a homomorphism $ϕ: H^n(L;Z)\to H^n(M;Z)$ can be realized by a map $f:M\to L$ of degree $k$ for closed $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifolds $M$ and $L$, $n>1$. A corollary is that each $(n-1)$-connected $2n$-manifold admits selfmaps of degree larger than 1, $n>1$. In the most interesting case of dimension 4, with the additional surgery arguments we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a degree $k$ map from a closed orientable 4-manifold $M$ to a closed simply connected 4-manifold $L$ in terms of their intersection forms, in particular there is a map $f:M\to L$ of degree 1 if and only if the intersection form of $L$ is isomorphic to a direct summand of that of $M$.

Small knots and large handle additions

We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ (with $\partial M$ totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer $g> 0$ there are infinitely many separating slopes $r$ on $\partial M$ so that $M[r]$, the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to $M$ along $r$, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus $g$ and is still hyperbolic. The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results for the cases $g=0,1$. Our 3-manifold $M$ is the complement of a simple small knot in a handlebody.

Non-zero degree maps between 3-manifolds

First the title could be also understood as ``3-manifolds related by non-zero degree maps" or "Degrees of maps between 3-manifolds" for some aspects in this survey talk. The topology of surfaces was completely understood at the end of 19th century, but maps between surfaces kept to be an active topic in the 20th century and many important results just appeared in the last 25 years. The topology of 3-manifolds was well-understood only in the later 20th century, and the topic of non-zero degree maps between 3-manifolds becomes active only rather recently. We will survey questions and results in the topic indicated by the title, present its relations to 3-manifold topology and its applications to problems in geometry group theory, fixed point theory and dynamics. There are four aspects addressed: (1) Results concerning the existence and finiteness about the maps of non-zero degree (in particular of degree one) between 3-manifolds and their suitable correspondence about epimorphisms on knot groups and 3-manifold groups. (2) A measurement of the topological complexity on 3-manifolds and knots given by "degree one map partial order", and the interactions between the studies of non-zero degree map among 3-manifolds and of topology of 3-manifolds. (3) The standard forms of non-zero degree maps and automorphisms on 3-manifolds and applications to minimizing the fixed points in the isotopy class. (4) The uniqueness of the covering degrees between 3-manifolds and the uniqueness embedding indices (in particular the co-Hopfian property) between Kleinian groups. The methods used are varied, and we try to describe them briefly.

On finiteness of the number of boundary slopes of immersed surfaces in 3-manifolds

For any hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with totally geodesic boundary, there are finitely many boundary slopes for essential immersed surfaces of a given genus. There is a uniform bound for the number of such boundary slopes if the genus of $\partial M$ or the volume of $M$ is bounded above. When the volume is bounded above, then area of $\partial M$ is bounded above and the length of closed geodesic on $\partial M$ is bounded below.

Generalized Hopfian property, minimal Haken manifold, and J. Simon's conjecture for 3-manifold groups

We address a conjecture that $π_1$-surjective maps between closed aspherical 3-manifolds having the same rank on $π_1$ must be of non-zero degree. The conjecture is proved for Seifert manifolds, which is used in constructing the first known example of minimum Haken manifold. Another motivation is to study epimorphisms of 3-manifold groups via maps of non-zero degree between 3-manifolds.

Boundary slopes of immersed surfaces in 3-manifolds

This paper presents some finiteness results for the number of boundary slopes of immersed essential surfaces of given genus g in a compact 3-manifold with torus boundary. In the case of hyperbolic 3-manifolds we obtain uniform quadratic bounds in g for the number of possible slopes, independent of the 3-manifold. We also look at some related quantities, such as how many times the slopes of two such surfaces of specified genus can intersect.

Achirality of knots and links

We will develop various methods, some are of geometric nature and some are of algebraic nature, to detect the various achiralities of knots and links in $S^3$. For example, we show that the twisted Whitehead double of a knot is achiral if and only if the double is the unknot or the figure eight knot, and we show that all non-trivial links with $\leq9$ crossings are not achiral except the Borromean rings. A simple procedure for calculating the $η$-function is given in terms of a crossing change formula and its initial values.

Pseudo-Anosov maps and simple closed curves on surfaces

Given a pair of curves C_1 and C_2 on a hyperbolic surface F, when does there exist a pseudo-Anosov map sending one to another? More generally, one may ask the same question for C_i to be sets of disjoint simple closed curves. We will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such maps.

Homeomorphisms of 3-manifolds and the realization of Nielsen Number

The Nielsen Conjecture for Homeomorphisms asserts that any homeomorphism $f$ of a closed manifold is isotopic to a map realizing the Nielsen number of $f$, which is a lower bound for the number of fixed points among all maps homotopic to $f$. The main theorem of this paper proves this conjecture for all orientation preserving maps on geometric or Haken 3-manifolds. It will also be shown that on many manifolds all maps are isotopic to fixed point free maps. The proof is based on the understanding of homeomorphisms on 2-orbifolds and 3-manifolds. Thurston's classification of surface homeomorphisms will be generalized to 2-dimensional orbifolds, which is used to study fiber preserving maps of Seifert fiber spaces. Maps on most Seifert fiber spaces are indeed isotopic to fiber preserving maps, with the exception of four manifolds and orientation reversing maps on lens spaces or $S^3$. It will also be determined exactly which manifolds have a unique Seifert fibration up to isotopy. These informations will be used to deform a map to certain standard map on each piece of the JSJ decomposition, as well as on the neighborhood of the decomposition tori, which will make it possible to shrink each fixed point class to a single point, and remove inessential fixed point classes.
