Kondo effect driven by chirality imbalance

We propose a novel mechanism of the Kondo effect driven by a chirality imbalance (or chiral chemical potential) of relativistic light fermions. This effect is realized by the mixing between a right- or left-handed fermion and a heavy impurity in the chirality imbalanced matter even at zero density. This is different from the usual Kondo effect induced by finite density. We derive the Kondo effect from both a perturbative calculation and a mean-field approach. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the Kondo effect. The Kondo effect at nonzero chiral chemical potential can be tested by future lattice simulations.

Coexistence phase of $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

In neutron star matter, there exist $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluids in lower density in the crust while $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are believed to exist at higher density deep inside the core. In the latter, depending on the temperature and magnetic field, either the uniaxial nematic phase, the D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic phase, or the D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic phase appears. In this paper, we discuss a mixture of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids and find their coexistence. Adopting the loop expansion and the weak-coupling approximation for the interaction between two neutrons, we obtain the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) free energy in which both of the $^{1}S_{0}$ and $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates are taken into account by including the coupling terms between them. We analyze the GL free energy and obtain the phase diagram for the temperature and magnetic field. We find that the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid excludes the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid completely in the absence of magnetic field, they can coexist for weak magnetic fields, and the $^{1}S_{0}$ superfluid is expelled by the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid at strong magnetic fields, thereby proving the robustness of $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid against the magnetic field. We further show that the D$_{4}$-BN phase covers the whole region of the $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity as a result of the coupling term, in contrast to the case of a pure $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid studied before in which the D$_{4}$-BN phase is realized only under strong magnetic fields. Thus, the D$_{4}$-BN phase is topologically the most interesting phase, e.g., admitting half-quantized non-Abelian vortices relevant not only in magnetars but also in ordinary neutron stars.

QCD Kondo excitons

The quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Kondo effect is a quantum phenomenon in which heavy quarks ($c$, $b$) exist as impurity particles in quark matter composed of light quarks ($u$, $d$, $s$) at extremely high density. This is analogous to the famous Kondo effect in condensed matter physics. In the present paper, we show theoretically the existence of the "QCD Kondo excitons", i.e., the bound states of light quarks and heavy quarks, as the lowest-excitation modes above the ground state of the quark matter governed by the QCD Kondo effect. These are neutral for color and electric charges, similarly to the Kondo excitons in condensed matter, and they are new type of quasiparticles absent in the normal phase of quark matter. The QCD Kondo excitons have various masses and quantum numbers, i.e., flavors and spin parities (scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axialvector). The QCD Kondo excitons lead to the emergence of the neutral currents in transport phenomena, which are measurable in lattice QCD simulations. The study of the QCD Kondo excitons will provide us with understanding of new universal properties shared by quark matter and condensed matter.

Radial Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a population-imbalanced Fermi gas

The possibility of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in a population imbalanced Fermi gas with a vortex is proposed. Employing the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes formalism we self-consistently determine the superfluid order parameter and the particle number density in the presence of a vortex. We find that as increasing population imbalance, the superfluid order parameter spatially oscillates around the vortex core in the radial direction, indicating that the FFLO state becomes stable. We find that the radial FFLO states cover a wide region of the phase diagram in the weak-coupling regime at $T=0$ in contrast to the conventional case without a vortex. We show that this inhomogeneous superfluidity can be detected as peak structures of the local polarization rate associated with the node structure of the superfluid order parameter. Since the vortex in the 3D Fermi gas with population imbalance has been already realized in experiments, our proposal is a promising candidate of the FFLO state in cold atom physics.

Topological defects at the boundary of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study surface effects of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars. $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids are in uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic (BN), or D$_{4}$ BN phase, depending on the strength of magnetic fields from small to large. We suppose a neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid in a ball with a spherical boundary. Adopting a suitable boundary condition for $^{3}P_{2}$ condensates, we solve the Ginzburg-Landau equation to find several surface properties for the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid. First, the phase on the surface can be different from that of the bulk, and symmetry restoration or breaking occurs in general on the surface. Second, the distribution of the surface energy density has an anisotropy depending on the polar angle in the sphere, which may lead to the deformation of the geometrical shape of the surface. Third, the order parameter manifold induced on the surface, which is described by two-dimensional vector fields induced on the surface from the condensates, allows topological defects (vortices) on the surface, and there must exist such defects even in the ground state thanks to the Poincaré-Hopf theorem: although the numbers of the vortices and antivortices depend on the bulk phases, the difference between them is topologically invariant (the Euler number $χ=2$) irrespective of the bulk phases. These vortices, which are not extended to the bulk, are called boojums in the context of liquid crystals and helium-3 superfluids. The surface properties of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluid found in this paper may provide us useful information to study neutron stars.

Critical endpoint and universality class of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in the inner cores of neutron stars. $^3P_2$ superfluids offer a rich phase diagram including uniaxial/biaxial nematic phases, the ferromagnetic phase, and the cyclic phase. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation as superfluid Fermi liquid theory, we show that a strong (weak) magnetic field drives the first (second) order transition from the dihedral-two biaxial nematic phase to dihedral-four biaxial nematic phase in low (high) temperatures, and their phase boundaries are divided by the critical endpoint (CEP). We demonstrate that the set of critical exponents at the CEP satisfies the Rushbrooke, Griffiths, and Widom equalities, indicating a new universality class. At the CEP, the $^3P_2$ superfluid exhibits critical behavior with nontrivial critical exponents, indicating a new universality class. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation up to the 8th-order expansion satisfies three equalities and properly captures the physics of the CEP. This implies that the GL theory can provide a tractable way for understanding critical phenomena which may be realized in the dense core of realistic magnetars.

Domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in neutron stars

We work out domain walls in neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in the core of neutron stars. Adopting the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory as a bosonic low-energy effective theory, we consider configurations of domain walls interpolating ground states, i.e., the uniaxial nematic (UN), D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{2}$-BN), and D$_{4}$-biaxial nematic (D$_{4}$-BN) phases in the presence of zero, small and large magnetic fields, respectively. We solve the Euler-Lagrange equation from the GL free energy density, and calculate surface energy densities of the domain walls. We find that one extra Nambu-Goldstone mode is localized in the vicinity of a domain wall in the UN phase while a U(1) symmetry restores in the vicinity of one type of domain wall in the D$_{2}$-BN phase and all domain walls in the D$_{4}$-BN phase. Considering a pile of domain walls in the neutron stars, we find that the most stable configurations are domain walls perpendicular to the magnetic fields piled up in the direction along the magnetic fields in the D$_{2}$-BN and D$_{4}$-BN phases. We estimate the energy released from the deconstruction of the domain walls in the edge of a neutron star, and show that it can reach an astrophysical scale such as glitches in neutron stars.

Fate of the charm baryon $Λ_{c}$ in cold and hot nuclear matter

I discuss the properties of the $Λ_{c}$ baryon in nuclear matter at zero or finite temperature. Starting from the Lagrangian based on the heavy-quark effective theory, I derive the effective Lagrangian for the $Λ_{c}$ baryon existing as an impurity particle. Adopting the one-loop calculation for nucleons, I derive the effective potential as the quantity for measuring the stability of the $Λ_{c}$ baryon in nuclear matter. The parameters in the Lagrangian are fitted to reproduce the scattering length of the nucleon and the $Λ_{c}$ baryon estimated in the lattice QCD simulations and the chiral extrapolations. I present that the $Λ_{c}$ baryon is bound in nuclei with the binding energy of about 20 MeV at normal nuclear-matter density. I discuss the case that the $Λ_{c}$ baryon moves with a constant velocity. I also discuss an increase of the nucleon number density near the $Λ_{c}$ baryon in nuclear matter, and show that the $Λ_{c}$ baryon is a useful probe to research the nuclear systems at high density.

Spin-isospin Kondo effects for $Σ_{c}$ and $Σ_{c}^{\ast}$ baryons and $\bar{D}$ and $\bar{D}^{\ast}$ mesons

We study the Kondo effect for a $Σ_{c}$ ($Σ_{c}^{\ast}$) baryon in nuclear matter. In terms of the spin and isospin ($\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{spin}} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{isospin}}$) symmetry, the heavy-quark spin symmetry and the S-wave interaction, we provide the general form of the Lagrangian for a $Σ_{c}$ ($Σ_{c}^{\ast}$) baryon and a nucleon. We analyze the renormalization equation at the one-loop level, and find that the coexistence of spin exchange and isospin exchange magnifies the Kondo effect in comparison with the case where the spin-exchange interaction and the isospin-exchange interaction exist separately. We demonstrate that the solution exists for the ideal sets of the coupling constants, including the $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ symmetry as an extension of the $\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{spin}} \times \mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{isospin}}$ symmetry. We also conduct a similar analysis for the Kondo effect of a $\bar{D}$ ($\bar{D}^{\ast}$) meson in nuclear matter. On the basis of the obtained result, we conjecture that there could exist a "mapping" from the heavy meson (baryon) in vacuum onto the heavy baryon (meson) in nuclear matter.

Reexamining Ginzburg-Landau theory for neutron $^3P_2$ superfluidity in neutron stars

The Ginzburg-Landau (GL) effective theory is a useful tool to study a superconductivity or superfluidity near the critical temperature, and usually the expansion up to the 4th order in terms of order parameters is sufficient for the description of the second-order phase transition. In this paper, we discuss the GL equation for the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity relevant for interior of neutron stars. We derive the GL expansion up to the 8th order in the condensates and find that this order is necessary for the system to have the unique ground state, unlike the ordinary cases. Starting from the $LS$ potential, which provides the dominant attraction between two neutrons at the high density, we derive the GL equation in the path-integral formalism, where the auxiliary field method and the Nambu-Gor'kov representation are used. We present the detailed description for the trace calculation necessary in the derivation of the GL equation. As numerical results, we show the phase diagram of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity on the plane spanned by the temperature and magnetic field, and find that the 8th order terms lead to a first-order phase transition, whose existence was predicted in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation but has not been found thus far within the framework of the GL expansion up to the 6th order. The first-order phase transition will affect the interior structures inside the neutron stars.

Masses and decays of the bottom-charm hybrid meson $c \bar{b} g$

We study gluonic excitations inside a $B_{c} $ meson in the constituent gluon model, treating a bottom-charm hybrid meson $ c \bar{b} g $ as a three-body system. We obtain the mass spectra for the hybrid mesons with magnetic gluon and electric gluon and see that their lowest states appear above the $ D B $ threshold. Also, we consider the decays of the low-lying states of the hybrid meson into $ DB , \; D^{*} B, DB^{*} $, $ D^{*}B^{*} $, $ D_{s} B_{s} $, and $D_{s} B_{s}^{*} $ mesons, developing an existing model for the strong decays. We estimate their partial decay widths and find that the widths have a heavy dependence on the final meson states. We argue that the accuracy of our model will be tested experimentally when the branching ratios of the decays are measured. Our results suggest that there could be a prospect that the hybrid meson will be discovered as its first excited state rather than its lowest state.

Phase structure of neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids in strong magnetic fields in neutron stars

We discuss the effect of a strong magnetic field on neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity. Based on the attraction in the $^{3}P_{2}$ pair of two neutrons, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation in the path-integral formalism by adopting the bosonization technique and leave the next-to-leading order in the expansion of the magnetic field $B$. We determine the $(T,B)$ phase diagram with temperature $T$, comprising three phases: the uniaxial nematic (UN) phase for $B=0$, D$_{2}$-biaxial nematic (BN) and D$_{4}$-BN phases in finite $B$ and strong $B$ such as magnetars, respectively, where D$_{2}$ and D$_{4}$ are dihedral groups. We find that, compared with the leading order in the magnetic field known before, the region of the D$_{2}$-BN phase in the $(T,B)$ plane is extended by the effect of the next-to-leading-order terms of the magnetic field. We also present the thermodynamic properties, such as heat capacities and spin susceptibility, and find that the spin susceptibility exhibits anisotropies in the UN, D$_{2}$-BN, and D$_{4}$-BN phases. This information will be useful to understand the internal structures of magnetars.

Effects of strong magnetic fields on neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity with spin-orbit interactions

We discuss neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ phases in the core of neutron stars in strong magnetic field (magnetars). The neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ pairing provides a wide variety of condensates, such as the uniaxial nematic and (D$_{2}$ and D$_{4}$) biaxial nematic, with different symmetries stemming from the combinations of spin and momentum. Based on the spin-orbital angular momentum coupling and the spin-magnetic field coupling of the neutrons, we derive the Ginzburg-Landau equation containing higher order terms of the magnetic field. We investigate the phase diagram of the neutron $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluidity, and find that the D$_{2}$ biaxial nematic phase is extended by the higher order terms of the magnetic field. We also discuss the thermodynamic properties, the heat capacity and the spin susceptibility.

Quark-hadron continuity under rotation: Vortex continuity or boojum?

Quark-hadron continuity was proposed as crossover between hadronic matter and quark matter without a phase transition, based on the matching of the symmetry and excitations in both phases. In the limit of a light strange-quark mass, it connects hyperon matter and the color-flavor-locked (CFL) phase exhibiting color superconductivity. Recently, it was proposed that this conjecture could be generalized in the presence of superfluid vortices penetrating both phases (arXiv:1803.05115 [hep-ph]), and it was suggested that one hadronic superfluid vortex in hyperon matter could be connected to one non-Abelian vortex (color magnetic flux tube) in the CFL phase. Here, we argue that their proposal is consistent only at large distances; instead, we show that three hadronic superfluid vortices must combine with three non-Abelian vortices with different colors with the total color magnetic fluxes canceled out, where the junction is called a colorful boojum. We rigorously prove this in both a macroscopic theory based on the Ginzburg-Landau description in which symmetry and excitations match (including vortex cores), and a microscopic theory in which the Aharonov-Bohm phases of quarks around vortices match.

Quark-Hadron Crossover with Vortices

The quark-hadron crossover conjecture was proposed as a continuity between hadronic matter and quark matter with no phase transition. It is based on matching of symmetry and excitations in both the phases. It connects hyperon matter and color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of color superconductivity in the limit of light strange quark mass. We study generalization of this conjecture in the presence of topological vortices. We propose a picture where hadronic superfluid vortices in hyperon matter could be connected to non-Abelian vortices (color magnetic flux tubes) in the CFL phase during this crossover. We propose that three hadronic superfluid vortices must join together to three non-Abelian vortices with different color fluxes with the total color magnetic fluxes canceled out, where the junction is called a colorful boojum.

Kondo phase diagram of quark matter

We discuss the ground state of a quark matter containing heavy quarks as impurities in a simple model which exhibits the QCD Kondo effect. The model includes a current-current interaction with the color exchange between a light quark ($ψ$) and a heavy quark ($Ψ$). We introduce a gap function $Δ\sim \langle \bar ψΨ\rangle $ which represents the correlation between $ψ$ and $Ψ$, and perform the mean-field approximation assuming that heavy quarks are uniformly distributed. Values of the gap $Δ$ measure the strength of mixing between $ψ$ and $Ψ$. The gap equation obtained from the minimum of the thermodynamical potential together with the condition for the heavy-quark number conservation turns out to allow for nonzero values of the gap as the most stable state. We draw a phase diagram in $μ$ (the light-quark chemical potential) and $λ$ (an analog of the heavy-quark chemical potential) plane, and identify the region where the QCD Kondo effect occurs.

Hyperspherical-coordinate approach to the spectra and decay widths of hybrid quarkonia

In this paper, we consider the possibility that Y(4260), Y(4360), $ ψ(4415) $ or X(4660) is the ground state or the first excited state of a hybrid charmonium and examine whether $ Υ( 10860) $ is the ground state or the first excited state of a hybrid bottomonium. Under a constituent quark model, we carry out numerical calculations to obtain the spectra of both electric gluon and magnetic gluon hybrid quarkonia. We see that the ground state of a magnetic gluon hybrid charmonium and the first excited state of an electric gluon hybrid are comparable in energy to $ ψ(4415) $ and that the first excited states of an electric gluon hybrid bottomonium and the ground state of a magnetic gluon hybrid appear a few hundred MeV above the mass of $ Υ(10860 ) $. Also, we evaluate the widths of the decays of a hybrid charmonium into $D^{(*)} \bar{D}^{(*) } $ and those of a hybrid bottomonium into $ B^{(*) } \bar{B}^{(* ) } $. We show that if the exotic meson candidates are hybrid charmonia, then they are magnetic gluon ones and argue that it seems unlikely that $ Υ(10860) $ is the ground state of an electric gluon hybrid bottomonium.

Transport coefficients from QCD Kondo effect

We study the transport coefficients from the QCD Kondo effect in quark matter which contains heavy quarks as impurity particles. We estimate the coupling constant of the interaction between a light quark and a heavy quark at finite density and temperature by using the renormalization group equation up to two-loop order. We also estimate the coupling constant at zero temperature by using the mean-field approximation as non-perturbative treatment. To calculate the transport coefficients, we use the relativistic Boltzmann equation and apply the relaxation time approximation. We calculate the electric resistivity from the relativistic kinetic theory, and the viscosities from the relativistic hydrodynamics. We find that the electric resistivity is enhanced and the shear viscosity is suppressed due to the QCD Kondo effect at low temperature.
