Weil-Petersson geometry on the space of Bridgeland stability conditions

Inspired by mirror symmetry, we investigate some differential geometric aspects of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on a Calabi-Yau triangulated category. The aim is to develop theory of Weil-Petersson geometry on the stringy Kähler moduli space. A few basic examples are studied. In particular, we identify our Weil-Petersson metric with the Bergman metric on a Siegel modular variety in the case of the self-product of an elliptic curve.

A Geometric View of Optimal Transportation and Generative Model

In this work, we show the intrinsic relations between optimal transportation and convex geometry, especially the variational approach to solve Alexandrov problem: constructing a convex polytope with prescribed face normals and volumes. This leads to a geometric interpretation to generative models, and leads to a novel framework for generative models. By using the optimal transportation view of GAN model, we show that the discriminator computes the Kantorovich potential, the generator calculates the transportation map. For a large class of transportation costs, the Kantorovich potential can give the optimal transportation map by a close-form formula. Therefore, it is sufficient to solely optimize the discriminator. This shows the adversarial competition can be avoided, and the computational architecture can be simplified. Preliminary experimental results show the geometric method outperforms WGAN for approximating probability measures with multiple clusters in low dimensional space.

Mordell-Weil Torsion, Anomalies, and Phase Transitions

We explore how introducing a non-trivial Mordell-Weil group changes the structure of the Coulomb phases of a five-dimensional gauge theory from an M-theory compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds with a I$_2$+I$_4$ collision of singularities. The resulting gauge theory has a semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{sp}(4)$ or $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus \mathfrak{su}(4)$. We compute topological invariants relevant for the physics, such as the Euler characteristic, Hodge numbers, and triple intersection numbers. We determine the matter representation geometrically by computing weights via intersection of curves and fibral divisors. We fix the number of charged hypermultiplets transforming in each representations by comparing the triple intersection numbers and the one-loop prepotential. This condition is enough to fix the number of representation when the Mordell-Weil group is $\mathbb{Z}_2$ but not when it is trivial. The vanishing of the fourth power of the curvature forms in the anomaly polynomial is enough to fix the number of representations. We discuss anomaly cancellations of the six-dimensional uplifted. In particular, the gravitational anomaly is also considered as the Hodge numbers are computed explicitly without counting the degrees of freedom of the Weierstrass equation.

Relationships between cycle spaces, gain graphs, graph coverings, fundamental groups, path homology, and graph curvature

We prove a homology vanishing theorem for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Bochner on manifolds \cite{Bochner}. Specifically, we prove that if a graph has positive curvature at every vertex, then its first homology group is trivial, where the notion of homology that we use for graphs is the path homology developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan2}. %\Hm{added the fundamental group curvature relation} We moreover prove that the fundamental group is finite for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Myers on manifolds \cite{Myers1941}. The proofs draw on several separate areas of graph theory. We study graph coverings, gain graphs, and cycle spaces of graphs, in addition to the Bakry-Émery curvature and the path homology. The main results follow as a consequence of several different relationships developed among these different areas. Specifically, we show that a graph with positive curvature can have no non-trivial infinite cover preserving 3-cycles and 4-cycles, and give a combinatorial interpretation of the first path homology in terms of the cycle space of a graph. We relate cycle spaces of graphs to gain graphs with abelian gain group, and relate these to coverings of graphs. Along the way, we prove other new facts about gain graphs, coverings, and cycles spaces that are of related interest. Furthermore, we relate gain graphs to graph homotopy and the fundamental group developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan_homotopy}, and obtain an alternative proof to their result that the abelianization of the fundamental group is isomorphic to the first path homology over the integers.

The deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation in geometry and physics

We provide an introduction to the mathematics and physics of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation, a fully nonlinear geometric PDE on Kahler manifolds which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. We discuss the physical origin of the equation, and some recent progress towards its solution. In dimension 3 we prove a new Chern number inequality and discuss the relationship with algebraic stability conditions.

Invariant metrics on negatively pinched complete Kähler manifolds

We prove that a complete Kähler manifold with holomorphic curvature bounded between two negative constants admits a unique complete Kähler-Einstein metric. We also show this metric and the Kobayashi-Royden metric are both uniformly equivalent to the background Kähler metric. Furthermore, all three metrics are shown to be uniformly equivalent to the Bergman metric, if the complete Kähler manifold is simply-connected, with the sectional curvature bounded between two negative constants. In particular, we confirm two conjectures of R. E. Greene and H. Wu posted in 1979.

Intermittent behaviors in weakly coupled map lattices

In this paper, we study intermittent behaviors of coupled piecewise-expanding map lattices with two nodes and a weak coupling. We show that the successive phase transition between ordered and disordered phases occurs for almost every orbit. That is, we prove $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|=0$ and $\limsup_{n\rightarrow \infty}| x_1(n)-x_2(n)|\ge c_0>0$, where $x_1(n), x_2(n)$ correspond to the coordinates of two nodes at the iterative step $n$. We also prove the same conclusion for weakly coupled tent-map lattices with any multi-nodes.

Adiabatic Isometric Mapping Algorithm for Embedding 2-Surfaces in Euclidean 3-Space

Alexandrov proved that any simplicial complex homeomorphic to a sphere with strictly non-negative Gaussian curvature at each vertex can be isometrically embedded uniquely in $\mathbb{R}^3$ as a convex polyhedron. Due to the nonconstructive nature of his proof, there have yet to be any algorithms, that we know of, that realizes the Alexandrov embedding in polynomial time. Following his proof, we developed the adiabatic isometric mapping (AIM) algorithm. AIM uses a guided adiabatic pull-back procedure to produce "smooth" embeddings. Tests of AIM applied to two different polyhedral metrics suggests that its run time is sub cubic with respect to the number of vertices. Although Alexandrov's theorem specifically addresses the embedding of convex polyhedral metrics, we tested AIM on a broader class of polyhedral metrics that included regions of negative Gaussian curvature. One test was on a surface just outside the ergosphere of a Kerr black hole.

iSIRA: Integrated Shift-Invert Residual Arnoldi Method for Graph Laplacian Matrices from Big Data

The eigenvalue problem of a graph Laplacian matrix $L$ arising from a simple, connected and undirected graph has been given more attention due to its extensive applications, such as spectral clustering, community detection, complex network, image processing and so on. The associated graph Laplacian matrix is symmetric, positive semi-definite, and is usually large and sparse. Computing some smallest positive eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors is often of interest. However, the singularity of $L$ makes the classical eigensolvers inefficient since we need to factorize $L$ for the purpose of solving large and sparse linear systems exactly. The next difficulty is that it is usually time consuming or even unavailable to factorize a large and sparse matrix arising from real network problems from big data such as social media transactional databases, and sensor systems because there is in general not only local connections. In this paper, we propose an eignsolver based on the inexact residual Arnoldi method together with an implicit remedy of the singularity and an effective deflation for convergent eigenvalues. Numerical experiments reveal that the integrated eigensolver outperforms the classical Arnoldi/Lanczos method for computing some smallest positive eigeninformation provided the LU factorization is not available.

Further studies of the notion of differentiable maps from Azumaya/matrix supermanifolds I. The smooth case: Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz and Green-Schwarz meeting Grothendieck

In this sequel to works D(11.1) (arXiv:1406.0929 [math.DG]), D(11.2) (arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]), and D(11.3.1) (arXiv:1508.02347 [math.DG]), we re-examine --- and reformulate when in need --- several basic notions in super $C^{\infty}$-algebraic geometry as guided by the mathematical formulation of Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz fermionic strings and of Green-Schwarz fermionic strings from the viewpoint of Grothendieck on Algebraic Geometry. Two theorems that are the super counterpart of Theorem~3.1.1 and Theorem~3.2.1 of D(11.3.1) are proved. They unify the notion of "smooth maps from an Azumaya/matrix super smooth manifold with a fundamental module to a super smooth manifold" introduced in D(11.2), making it a complete super parallel to the setting for D-branes in the realm of algebraic geometry in D(1) (arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG]) and D(2) (arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG]), and in the realm of differential or $C^{\infty}$-algebraic geometry in D(11.1) and D(11.3.1). A prototypical definition of dynamical fermionic stacked D-brane world-volume on a space-time in the same spirit of RNS fermionic strings or GS fermionic strings is thus laid down. Similar to D(11.3.1), which paved the path to the construction of non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action (D(13.1) (arXiv:1606.08529 [hep-th])) and the standard action (D(13.3) (arXiv:1704.03237 [hep-th])) for fundamental bosonic stacked D-branes, the current notes shall serve the same for the construction of supersymmetric action for fundamental fermionic stacked D-branes of various dimensions --- a theme of another subseries of the D-project. A notion of "noncommutative $C^{\infty}$-rings" and "morphism" between them is introduced at the end as a byproduct.

A Realization of Thurstons Geometrization: Discrete Ricci Flow with Surgery

Hamilton's Ricci flow (RF) equations were recently expressed in terms of a sparsely-coupled system of autonomous first-order nonlinear differential equations for the edge lengths of a d-dimensional piecewise linear (PL) simplicial geometry. More recently, this system of discrete Ricci flow (DRF) equations was further simplified by explicitly constructing the Forman-Ricci tensor associated to each edge, thereby diagonalizing the first-order differential operator and avoiding the need to invert large sparse matrices at each time step. We recently showed analytically and numerically that these equations converge for axisymmetric 3-geometries to the corresponding continuum RF equations. We demonstrate here that these DRF equations yield an explicit numerical realization of Thurston's geometrization procedure for a discrete 3D axially-symmetric neckpinch geometry by using surgery to explicitly integrate through its Type-1 neck pinch singularity. A cubic-spline-based adaptive mesh was required to complete the evolution. Our numerically efficient simulations yield the expected Thurston decomposition of the sufficiently pinched axially symmetric geometry into its unique geometric structure -- a direct product of two lobes, each collapsing toward a 3-sphere geometry. The structure of our curvature may be used to better inform one of the vertex and edge weighting factors that appear in the Forman's expression of Ricci curvature on graphs.

On topological approach to local theory of surfaces in Calabi-Yau threefolds

We study the web of dualities relating various enumerative invariants, notably Gromov-Witten invariants and invariants that arise in topological gauge theory. In particular, we study Donaldson-Thomas gauge theory and its reductions to D=4 and D=2 which are relevant to the local theory of surfaces in Calabi-Yau threefolds.

A Novel Stretch Energy Minimization Algorithm for Equiareal Parameterizations

Surface parameterizations have been widely applied to computer graphics and digital geometry processing. In this paper, we propose a novel stretch energy minimization (SEM) algorithm for the computation of equiareal parameterizations of simply connected open surfaces with a very small area distortion and a highly improved computational efficiency. In addition, the existence of nontrivial limit points of the SEM algorithm is guaranteed under some mild assumptions of the mesh quality. Numerical experiments indicate that the efficiency, accuracy, and robustness of the proposed SEM algorithm outperform other state-of-the-art algorithms. Applications of the SEM on surface remeshing and surface registration for simply connected open surfaces are demonstrated thereafter. Thanks to the SEM algorithm, the computations for these applications can be carried out efficiently and robustly.

Braiding Statistics and Link Invariants of Bosonic/Fermionic Topological Quantum Matter in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions

Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) pertinent to some emergent low energy phenomena of condensed matter lattice models in 2+1 and 3+1D are explored. Many of our field theories are highly-interacting without free quadratic analogs. Some of our bosonic TQFTs can be regarded as the continuum field theory formulation of Dijkgraaf-Witten twisted discrete gauge theories. Other bosonic TQFTs beyond the Dijkgraaf-Witten description and all fermionic spin TQFTs are either higher-form gauge theories where particles must have strings attached, or fermionic discrete gauge theories obtained by gauging the fermionic Symmetry-Protected Topological states (SPTs). We calculate both Abelian and non-Abelian braiding statistics data of anyon particle and string excitations, where the statistics data can one-to-one characterize the underlying topological orders of TQFTs. We derive path integral expectation values of links formed by line and surface operators in the TQFTs. The acquired link invariants include not only the Aharonov-Bohm linking number, but also Milnor triple linking number in 2+1D, triple and quadruple linking numbers of surfaces, and intersection number of surfaces in 3+1D. We also construct new spin TQFTs with the corresponding knot/link invariants of Arf(-Brown-Kervaire), Sato-Levine and others. We propose a new relation between the fermionic SPT partition function and Rokhlin invariant. We can use these invariants and other observables, including ground state degeneracy, reduced modular $\mathcal{S}^{xy}$ and $\mathcal{T}^{xy}$ matrices, and the partition function on $\mathbb{RP}^3$ manifold, to identify all $\mathbb{Z}_8$ classes of 2+1D gauged $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Ising-symmetric $\mathbb{Z}_2^f$-fermionic Topological Superconductors (TSC, realized by stacking layers of a pair of $p+ip$ and $p-ip$ SC, where boundary supports non-chiral Majorana-Weyl modes) with continuum spin-TQFTs.

Mirror of Atiyah flop in symplectic geometry and stability conditions

We study the mirror operation of the Atiyah flop in symplectic geometry. We formulate the operation for a symplectic manifold with a Lagrangian fibration. Furthermore we construct geometric stability conditions on the derived Fukaya category of the deformed conifold and study the action of the mirror Atiyah flop on these stability conditions.

Positive Scalar Curvature and Minimal Hypersurface Singularities

In this paper we develop methods to extend the minimal hypersurface approach to positive scalar curvature problems to all dimensions. This includes a proof of the positive mass theorem in all dimensions without a spin assumption. It also includes statements about the structure of compact manifolds of positive scalar curvature extending the work of \cite{sy1} to all dimensions. The technical work in this paper is to construct minimal slicings and associated weight functions in the presence of small singular sets and to show that the singular sets do not become too large in the lower dimensional slices. It is shown that the singular set in any slice is a closed set with Hausdorff codimension at least three. In particular for arguments which involve slicing down to dimension $1$ or $2$ the method is successful. The arguments can be viewed as an extension of the minimal hypersurface regularity theory to this setting of minimal slicings.

Dynamics of D-branes II. The standard action --- an analogue of the Polyakov action for (fundamental, stacked) D-branes

We introduce a new action $S_{standard}^{(ρ,h; Φ,g,B,C)}$ for D-branes that is to D-branes as the Polyakov action is to fundamental strings. This `standard action' is abstractly a non-Abelian gauged sigma model --- based on maps $φ: (X^{\!A\!z},E;\nabla)\rightarrow Y$ from an Azumaya/matrix manifold $X^{\!A\!z}$ with a fundamental module $E$ with a connection $\nabla$ to $Y$ --- enhanced by the dilaton term, the gauge-theory term, and the Chern-Simons/Wess-Zumino term that couples $(φ,\nabla)$ to Ramond-Ramond field. In a special situation, this new theory merges the theory of harmonic maps and a gauge theory, with a nilpotent type fuzzy extension. With the analysis developed in D(13.1) (arXiv:1606.08529 [hep-th]) for such maps and an improved understanding of the hierarchy of various admissible conditions on the pairs $(φ,\nabla)$ beyond D(13.2.1) (arXiv:1611.09439 [hep-th]) and how they resolve the built-in obstruction to pull-push of covariant tensors under a map from a noncommutative manifold to a commutative manifold, we develop further in this note some covariant differential calculus needed and apply them to work out the first variation --- and hence the corresponding equations of motion for D-branes --- of the standard action and the second variation of the kinetic term for maps and the dilaton term in this action. Compared with the non-Abelian Dirac-Born-Infeld action constructed in D(13.1) along the same line, the current note brings the Nambu-Goto-string-to-Polyakov-string analogue to D-branes. The current bosonic setting is the first step toward the dynamics of fermionic D-branes (cf. D(11.2): arXiv:1412.0771 [hep-th]) and their quantization as fundamental dynamical objects, in parallel to what happened to the theory of fundamental strings during years 1976--1981.
