Innermost stable circular orbits around a spinning black hole binary

Using the exact solution that describes multi-centered rotating black holes, recently discovered by Teo and Wan, we investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) for massive particles and the circular orbit for massless particles moving around a spinning black hole binary. We assume equal masses $M_1 = M_2=m$ and equal spin angular momenta $|J_1| = |J_2|$ for both black holes. Firstly, we examine the case where two black holes are spinning in the same direction ($J_1=J_2$). We clarify that that for particles rotating in the same direction as (opposite directions to) black holes' spin, the greater the spin angular momenta of the black holes, the more the radii of the ISCO for massive particles and the circular orbit for massless particles decrease (increase). We show that distinct ISCO transitions occur for particles rotating in the same direction as the black holes in three ranges of spin angular momenta: $0<J_1/m^2=J_2/m^2< 0.395...$, $0.395...<J_1/m^2=J_2/m^2< 0.483...$, and $0.483...<J_1/m^2=J_2/m^2<0.5$. Conversely, particles rotating in the opposite direction to the black holes exhibit a consistent transition pattern for the case $0<J_1/m^2=J_2/m^2<0.5$. Secondly, we study the situation where binary black holes are spinning in opposite directions ($J_1=-J_2$). We clarify that for large (small) separations between black holes, the ISCO appears near the black hole that is spinning in the same (opposite) direction as particles' rotation. Additionally, we show that different ISCO transitions occur in the three angular momentum ranges: $0<J_1/m^2=-J_2/m^2< 0.160...$, $0.160...<J_1/m^2=-J_2/m^2< 0.467...$, and $0.467...<J_1/m^2=-J_2/m^2<0.5$.

Static equilibrium of multi-black holes in expanding bubbles in five dimensions

We investigate possible configurations for vacuum multi-black holes that maintain static equilibrium in expanding bubbles. Our analysis assumes a five-dimensional Weyl metric to describe the spacetime, facilitating the derivation of solutions based on the provided rod structure. We consider a spacetime having expanding bubbles caused by one or two acceleration horizons, and show that various configurations such as two bubbles, four bubbles devoid of horizons, a black saturn, a black di-ring, a bicycling black ring (orthogonal black di-ring), and a five-dimensional black hole binary can achieve equilibrium within expanding bubbles. Specifically, we demonstrate that equilibrium requires two acceleration horizons on both sides for the bicycling ring and the five-dimensional black hole binary. However, only one acceleration horizon is necessary for achieving equilibrium in the case of the black saturn and the black di-ring.

A Capped Black Hole in Five Dimensions

We present the first non-BPS exact solution of an asymptotically flat, stationary spherical black hole having domain of outer communication with nontrivial topology in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. It describes a charged rotating black hole capped by a disc-shaped bubble. The existence of the ``capped black hole'' shows the non-uniqueness of spherical black holes.

Causality of Photon Propagation under Dominant Energy Condition in Non-linear Electrodynamics

Recently, various types of regular black hole model are reintroduced as the solution of the Einstein equations coupled with nonlinear electrodynamics (NED). In NED, it is known that photons do not propagate along the null geodesics of the spacetime geometry, but of so-called effective geometry, which suggests the possibility of so-called ``faster/slower than light" photons. We study the relation between the causality of photons and the dominant energy condition (DEC) in some static and spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in NED. We show that if photon trajectories with a nonzero angular momentum are timelike in the spacetime geometry, DEC is always satisfied in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes in any NED that admits the Maxwell limit, and vice versa, at least, in the weak field limit. Thus, this implies that in such NED, the violation of DEC admits the existence of faster than light photons.

Dynamics of Myers-Perry black holes with almost equal angular momenta in odd dimensions

We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of D=2N+3 Myers-Perry black holes with almost equal angular momenta, which have N equal spins out of possible N+1 spins. In particular, we study the ultraspinning instability and the fate of its nonlinear evolution using the large D effective theory approach. We find that every stationary phase can be mapped to the counterpart in the singly rotating phase within the leading order effective theory. From the known results of singly rotating solutions, we obtain the phase diagram of almost equally rotating black holes. We also obtain a certain implication for the possible topology changing transition.

Acoustic black and white holes of potential flow in a tube

We propose a new simple model of acoustic black hole in a thin tube, where the difference in the gravitational potential is used to create a transonic flow. The main merit of our transonic flow model is that the Euler equations can be solved analytically. In fact, we can obtain an exact solution to the equation in terms of a height function in the monatomic case $γ=5/3$. For arbitrary $γ$, we find that it takes a simple form by the near-sonic approximation. Moreover, we obtain two analytic solutions describing a backward wave and a forward wave, from which we can confirm the existence of sonic horizons.

Particle motions around regular black holes

We investigate the bound orbits of massive/massless, neutral particles and photons moving around regular black holes of Fan and Wang. For massive particles, we show the existence of stable/unstable circular orbits and the charge dependence of the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit. Remarkably, we find an unstable circular orbit of photons inside the event horizon. For massless particles and photons, we show that both stable and unstable circular orbits can exist in a regular and horizonless spacetime with a slight overcharge. Then, we also discuss the periapsis shift of massive neutral particles orbiting around the black hole, and show that the charge gives a negative correction to the shift for black holes with small nonlinearity of electrodynamics.

Phase and stability of black strings in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory at large D

The phase and stability of black strings in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory are investigated by using the large D effective theory approach. The spacetime metric and thermodynamics are derived up to the next-to-leading order (NLO) in the 1/D expansion. We find that the entropy current defined by the Iyer-Wald formula follows the second law. As in the Einstein theory, the entropy difference from the total mass produces an entropy functional for the effective theory. Including the NLO correction, we find that for the large Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α_{\rm GB}$, the Gregory-Laflamme instability of uniform black strings needs longer wavelength. Moreover, we show that the critical dimension, beyond which non-uiform black strings becomes more stable than uniform ones, increases as $α_{\rm GB}$ becomes large, and approaches to a finite value for $α_{\rm GB}\to \infty$.

A black lens in bubble of nothing

Applying the inverse scattering method to static and bi-axisymmetric Einstein equations, we construct a non-rotating black lens inside bubble of nothing whose horizon is topologically lens space L(n,1)=S^3/Z_n. Using this solution, we discuss whether a static black lens can be in equilibrium by the force balance between the expansion and gravitational attraction.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black strings at large $α$

The simplest black string in higher-dimensional general relativity (GR) is perhaps the direct product of a Schwarzschild spacetime and a flat spatial direction. However, it is known that the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory does not allow such a trivial and simple solution. We propose a novel analytic technique, which assumes that the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term becomes dominant over the Einstein-Hilbert (EH) term. Assuming the dimensionless coupling constant $α$ normalized by the horizon scale is large enough, we find that the spacetime is separated into the GB region and GR region, which are matched via the transition region where the GB and EH terms are comparable. Using this large $α$ approximation, we indeed construct new analytic solutions of black strings, from which we analytically compute various physical quantities of black strings at large $α$. Moreover, we confirm that all these analytic results are consistent with the numerical calculation. We also discuss the possible extension to general Einstein-Lovelock black holes.

Stable bound orbits around static Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

As is well-known, asymptotically flat, static and spherically symmetric black holes do not admit stable bound orbits of massive/massless particles outside the horizon in higher-dimensional Einstein gravity. However, for massive particles, this dramatically changes in higher curvature theories. We clarify the parameter range such that there exist stable bound orbits in $d$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories for $6\leq d\leq 9$. In particular, we show the existence of the lower bound of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant below which stable bound orbits cease to exist. Moreover, we also find that for AdS-black holes in the theories, there can exist two stable circular orbits outside the horizon.

Stable bound orbits in microstate geometries

We show the existence of stable bound orbits for the massive and massless particles moving in the simplest microstate geometry spacetime in the bosonic sector of the five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In our analysis, reducing the motion of particles to a two-dimensional potential problem, we numerically investigate whether the potential has a negative local minimum.

Rotating black holes at large $D$ in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

Applying the large $D$ approach to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, we construct equally rotating black hole solutions in odd dimensions. This provides the first example of the analytic solutions which describes not-slowly rotating black holes. For the next-leading order solutions in the $1/D$ expansion, we discuss the physical aspects such as thermodynamics and the phase diagram.

Conversion of gravitational and electromagnetic waves without any external background fields

Applying a simple harmonic map method to the cylindrically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell system, we obtain exact solutions representing strong nonlinear interaction between gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves in the case without any background field. As an interesting fact, we can show that with adjusted parameters the solutions represent occurrences of large conversion phenomena in the intense region of fields near the cylindrically symmetric axis.

Squashed black holes at large $D$

Using the large $D$ effective theory approach, we construct a static solution of non-extremal and squashed black holes with/without an electric charge, which describes a spherical black hole in a Kaluza-Klein spacetime with a compactified dimension. The asymptotic background with a compactified dimension and near-horizon geometry are analytically solved by the $1/D$ expansion. Particularly, our work demonstrates that the large $D$ limit can be applied to solve the non-trivial background with a compactified direction, which leads to a first-order flow equation. Moreover, we show that the extremal limit consistently reproduces the known extremal result.

Lower bound for angular momenta of microstate geometries in five dimensions

We study the BPS solutions of the asymptotically flat, stationary microstate geometries with bi-axisymmetry and reflection symmetry in the five-dimensional ungauged minimal supergravity. We show that the angular momenta of the microstate geometry with a small number of centers (at least, five centers) have lower bounds, which are slightly smaller than those of the maximally spinning BMPV black hole. Therefore, there exists a certain narrow parameter region such that the microstate geometry with a small number of centers admits the same angular momenta as the BMPV black hole. Moreover, we investigate the dependence of the topological structure of the evanescent ergosurfaces on the magnetic fluxes through the 2-circles between two centers.

Stable circular orbits in caged black hole spacetimes

We consider the motion of massive and massless particles in a five-dimensional spacetime with a compactified extra-dimensional space where a black hole is localized, i.e., a caged black hole spacetime. We show the existence of circular orbits and reveal their sequences and stability. In the asymptotic region, stable circular orbits always exist, which implies that four-dimensional gravity is more dominant because of the small extra-dimensional space. In the vicinity of a black hole, they do not exist because the effect of compactification is no longer effective. We also clarify the dependence of the sequences of circular orbits on the size of the extra-dimensional space by determining the appearance of the innermost stable circular orbit and the last circular orbit (i.e., the unstable photon circular orbit).

Stable circular orbits in Kaluza-Klein black hole spacetimes

Reducing motion of particles to a two-dimensional potential problem, we show that there are stable circular orbits around a squashed Kaluza-Klein black hole with a spherical horizon and multi-Kaluza-Klein black holes with two spherical horizons in five dimensions. For a single horizon, we show analytically that the radius of an innermost stable circular orbit monotonically depends on the size of an extra dimension. For two horizons, the radius of an innermost stable circular orbit depends on the separation between two black holes besides the size of an extra dimension. More precisely, the set of the stationary points of the potential is composed of two branches. For a large separation, stable circular orbits exist on the two branches regardless of the size of an extra dimension, and in particular, on one branch, the set of stable circular orbits is connected for the small extra dimension but has two disconnected parts for the large extra dimension. For a small separation, only on one branch it exists, and the radius of an innermost stable circular orbit monotonically increases with an extra-dimension size.
