Stable bound orbits in black lens backgrounds

In contrast to five-dimensional Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Myers-Perry backgrounds, we show that there are stable bound orbits of massive/massless particles in five-dimensional black lens backgrounds, in particular, the supersymmetric black lens with $L(2,1)$ and $L(3,1)$ topologies. We also show that in the zero-energy limit of massless particles, there exist stable circular orbits on the evanescent ergosurfaces.

Stable circular orbits in higher-dimensional multi-black hole spacetimes

We consider the dynamics of particles, particularly focusing on circular orbits in the higher-dimensional Majumdar-Papapetrou (MP) spacetimes with two equal mass black holes. It is widely known that in the 5D Schwarzschild-Tangherlini and Myers-Perry backgrounds, there are no stable circular orbits. In contrast, we show that in the 5D MP background, stable circular orbits can always exist when the separation of two black holes is large enough. More precisely, for a large separation, stable circular orbits exist from the vicinity of horizons to infinity; for a medium one, they appear only in a certain finite region bounded by the innermost stable circular orbit and the outermost stable circular orbit outside the horizons; for a small one, they do not appear at all. Moreover, we show that in MP spacetimes in more than 5D, they do not exist for any separations.

Stable bound orbits around a supersymmetric black lens

In higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes, there are no stable bound orbits of particles. In contrast to this, it is shown that there are stable bound orbits in a five-dimensional black lens spacetime.

Multi-charged black lens

We construct an asymptotically flat, stationary and biaxisymmetric supersymmetric black lens solution in five-dimensional U(1)^3 supergravity. It is shown that the spatial cross section of the horizon is topologically the lens space of L(n,1), and the spacetime is regular on/outside the event horizon. The black lens carries (3n+2) physical quantities, three electric charges, two angular momenta and 3(n-1) magnetic fluxes.

A stationary and biaxisymmetric four-soliton solution in five dimensions

Using the inverse scattering method to solve the five-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations, we construct an asymptotically flat four-soliton solution as a stationary and bi-axisymmetric solution. We impose certain boundary conditions on this solution so that it includes a rotating black hole whose horizon-cross section is topologically a lens space of L(2,1). The solution has nine parameters but three only is physically independent due to the constraint equations. The remaining degrees of freedom correspond to the mass and two independent angular momenta of the black hole. We analyze a few simple cases in detail, in particular, the static case with two zero-angular momenta and the stationary case with a single non-zero angular momentum.

A Kaluza-Klein black lens in five dimensions

We obtain a supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein black lens solution in Taub-NUT space in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. It is shown that the spacetime has a degenerate horizon with the spatial cross section of the lens space topology L(n,1) and looks like the four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime in the neighborhood of spatial infinity. In contrast to the horizon topology, from a five-dimensional point of view, the spatial infinity has the topology of S^3 rather than the lens space. For this reason, this solution has an asymptotically flat limit. We discuss several properties of such a black lens, in particular, the effect by the compactification of an extra-dimension and some physical differences from the asymptotically flat supersymmetric black lens which has recently been found.

Charged black lens in de Sitter space

We obtain a charged black lens solution in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a positive cosmological constant. It is shown that the solution obtained here describes the formation of a black hole with the spatial cross section of a sphere from that of the lens space of L(n,1) in five-dimensional de Sitter space.

Construction and application of variations on the cylindrical gravitational waves of Weber, Wheeler, and Bonnor

To clarify certain nonlinear properties of strong gravitational field, we investigate cylindrically symmetric gravitational waves that are localized as regular wave packets in the space of radial and time coordinates. The waves are constructed by applying a certain kind of harmonic mapping method to the seed solutions with linear polarization, which are generalizations of the solution representing a cylindrical gravitational pulse wave discussed by Weber-Wheeler and Bonnor. The solutions obtained here, though their form is rather simple, show occurrence of strong mutual conversion between a linear mode and a cross mode apparently. The single localized wave shows the conversion in the vicinity of the symmetric axis where the self-interaction is strengthened, and the collision between multiple waves also causes the conversion. These phenomena can be thought to be the emergence of genuine nonlinearity that the Einstein gravity holds. Finally we discuss a simple, but interesting application of the solutions to the case of the Einstein-Maxwell system.

Asymptotically flat multi-black lenses

We present an asymptotically flat and stationary multi-black lens solution with bi-axisymmetry of $U(1)\times U(1)$ as a supersymmetric solution in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the spatial cross section of each degenerate Killing horizon admits different lens space topologies of $L(n,1)=S^3/{\mathbb Z_n}$ as well as a sphere $S^3$. Moreover, we show that in contrast to the higher dimensional Majumdar-Papapertrou multi-black hole and multi-BMPV black hole spacetimes, the metric is smooth on each horizon even if the horizon topology is spherical.

Gravitational two solitons in Levi-Civita spacetime

Applying the Pomeransky inverse scattering method to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equations and using the Levi-Civita solution as a seed, we construct a two-soliton solution with cylindrical symmetry. In our previous work, we constructed the one-soliton solution with a real pole and showed that the singularities that the Levi-Civita background has on an axis can be removed by the choice of certain special parameters, but it still has unavoidable null singularities, as usual one-solitons do. In this work, we show that for the two-soliton solutions, any singularities can be removed by suitable parameter-setting and such solutions describe the propagation of gravitational wave packets. Moreover, in terms of the two-soliton solutions, we mention a time shift phenomenon, the coalescence and the split of solitons as the nonlinear effect of gravitational waves.

Supersymmetric black lenses in five dimensions

We present an asymptotically flat supersymmetric black lens solution with the horizon topology L(n,1)=S^3/Z_n in the five-dimensional minimal ungauged supergravity. We show that the black lens carries a mass, two independent angular momenta, electric charge and (n-1) magnetic fluxes, among which only the (n+1) quantities are independent.

Gravitational solitons in Levi-Civita spacetime

Applying the Pomeransky inverse scattering method to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation and using the Levi-Civita solution for a seed, we construct a cylindrically symmetric single-soliton solution. Although the Levi-Civita spacetime generally includes singularities on its axis of symmetry, it is shown that for the obtained single-soliton solution, such singularities can be removed by choice of certain special parameters. This single-soliton solution describes propagation of nonlinear cylindrical gravitational shock wave pulses rather than solitonic waves. By analyzing wave amplitudes and time-dependence of polarization angles, we provides physical description of the single-soliton solution.

Non-linear effects for cylindrical gravitational two-soliton

Using a cylindrical soliton solution to the four-dimensional vacuum Einstein equation, we study non-linear effects of gravitational waves such as Faraday rotation and time shift phenomenon. In the previous work, we analyzed the single-soliton solution constructed by the Pomeransky's improved inverse scattering method. In this work, we construct a new two-soliton solution with complex conjugate poles, by which we can avoid light-cone singularities unavoidable in a single soliton case. In particular, we compute amplitudes of such non-linear gravitational waves and time-dependence of the polarizations. Furthermore, we consider the time shift phenomenon for soliton waves, which means that a wave packet can propagate at slower velocity than light.

New cylindrical gravitational soliton waves and gravitational Faraday rotation

In terms of gravitational solitons, we study gravitational non-linear effects of gravitational solitary waves such as Faraday rotation. Applying the Pomeransky's procedure for inverse scattering method, which has been recently used for constructing stationary black hole solutions in five dimensions to a cylindrical spacetime in four dimensions, we construct a new cylindrically symmetric soliton solution. This is the first example to be applied to the cylindrically symmetric case. In particular, we clarify the difference from the Tomimatsu's single soliton solution, which was constructed by the Belinsky-Zakharov's procedure.

General Kaluza-Klein black holes with all six independent charges in five-dimensional minimal supergravity

Using the SL(2,R)-duality in a dimensionally reduced spacetime in (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity, we construct general Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions which carry six independent charges, its mass, angular momentum along four dimensions, electric and magnetic charges of the Maxwell fields in addition to Kaluza-Klein electric and magnetic monopole charges.

"Flip" of SL(2,R)-duality in five-dimensional supergravity

The dimensional reduction of the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity to a Lorentzian four-dimensional spacetime leads to a theory with a massless axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity and two U(1) gauge fields and the dimensionally reduced equations of motion have SL(2,R)/SO(2)-duality invariance. In our previous work, utilizing the duality invariance, we formulated solution-generation techniques within five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In this work, by choosing a timelike Killing vector, we consider dimensional reduction to a four-dimensional Euclidean space, in which the field equations have SL(2,R)/SO(1,1) invariance. In the timelike case, we develop a new duality transformation technique, while in the spacelike case we have done that in the previous work. As an example, by applying it to the Rasheed solutions, we obtain rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. In general, in contrast to the spacelike case, the resulting dimensionally reduced solution includes the so-called NUT parameter and therefore from a four-dimensional point of view, such a spacetime is not asymptotically flat. However, it is shown that in some special cases, it can describe ordinary Kaluza-Klein black holes.

Uniqueness theorem for charged dipole rings in five-dimensional minimal supergravity

We show a uniqueness theorem for charged dipole rotating black rings in the bosonic sector of five-dimensional minimal supergravity, generalizing our previous work [arXiv:0901.4724] on the uniqueness of charged rotating black holes with topologically spherical horizon in the same theory. More precisely, assuming the existence of two commuting axial Killing vector fields, we prove that an asymptotically flat, stationary charged rotating black hole with non-degenerate connected event horizon of cross-section topology S^1XS^2 in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory-if exists-is characterized by the mass, charge, two independent angular momenta, dipole charge, and the rod structure. As anticipated, the necessity of specifying dipole charge-which is not a conserved charge-is the new, distinguished ingredient that highlights difference between the present theorem and the corresponding theorem for vacuum case, as well as difference from the case of topologically spherical horizon within the same minimal supergravity. We also consider a similar boundary value problem for other topologically non-trivial black holes within the same theory, and find that generalizing the present uniqueness results to include black lenses-provided there exists such a solution in the theory-would not appear to be straightforward.

New approach to solution generation using SL(2,R)-duality of a dimensionally reduced space in five-dimensional minimal supergravity and new black holes

The dimensional reduction of (the bosonic sector of) five-dimensional minimal supergravity to four dimensions leads to a theory with a massless axion and a dilaton coupled to gravity and two U(1) gauge fields (one of which has Chern-Simons coupling), whose field equations have SL(2,R)-invariance. Utilizing this SL(2,R)-duality, we provide a new formalism for solution generation. As an example, applying it to the Rasheed solution, which are known to describe dyonic rotating black holes (from the four-dimensional point of view) of five-dimensional pure gravity, we obtain rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole solutions in five-dimensional minimal supergravity. We also show that the solutions have six charges: mass, angular momentum, Kaluza-Klein electric/magnetic charges and electric/magnetic charges of the Maxwell field, four of which are related by a constraint.
