Kinetic-energy driven superconductivity in cuprate superconductors

Superconductivity in cuprate superconductors occurs upon charge-carrier doping Mott insulators, where a central question is what mechanism causes the loss of electrical resistance below the superconducting (SC) transition temperature? In this review, we attempt to summarize the basic idea of the kinetic-energy driven SC mechanism in the description of superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. The mechanism of the kinetic-energy driven superconductivity is purely electronic without phonons, where the charge-carrier pairing interaction arises directly from the kinetic energy by the exchange of spin excitations in the higher powers of the doping concentration. This kinetic-energy driven d-wave SC-state is controlled by both the SC gap and quasiparticle coherence, which leads to that the maximal SC transition temperature occurs around the optimal doping, and then decreases in both the underdoped and overdoped regimes. In particular, the same charge-carrier interaction mediated by spin excitations that induces the SC-state in the particle-particle channel also generates the normal-state pseudogap state in the particle-hole channel. The normal-state pseudogap crossover temperature is much larger than the SC transition temperature in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes, and then monotonically decreases upon the increase of doping, eventually disappearing together with superconductivity at the end of the SC dome. This kinetic-energy driven SC mechanism also indicates that the strong electron correlation favors superconductivity, since the main ingredient is identified into a charge-carrier pairing mechanism not from the external degree of freedom such as the phonon but rather solely from the internal spin degree of freedom of the electron. The typical properties of cuprate superconductors discussed within the framework of the kinetic-energy driven SC mechanism are also reviewed.

Resonantly enhanced coherence by laser-assisted tunneling

We study quantum coherence of strongly interacting cold bosons in a double-well potential driven by a laser field. The system is initially in a Fock state and, for either with or without a static tilting field, evolves into the coherent states. The coherence is resonantly enhanced by the photon-assisted tunneling. For the tilted wells, it reveals a two-branch pattern which corresponds to the multiple photon absorption or emission, respectively.

Dynamical spin response in cuprate superconductors from low-energy to high-energy

Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the dynamical spin response of cuprate superconductors is studied from low-energy to high-energy. The spin self-energy is evaluated explicitly in terms of the collective charge carrier modes in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels, and employed to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor. Our results show the existence of damped but well-defined dispersive spin excitations in the whole doping phase diagram. In particular, the low-energy spin excitations in the superconducting-state have an hour-glass-shaped dispersion, with commensurate resonance that appears in the superconducting-state only, while the low-energy incommensurate spin fluctuations can persist into the normal-state. The high-energy spin excitations in the superconducting-state on the other hand retain roughly constant energy as a function of doping, with spectral weights and dispersion relations comparable to those in the corresponding normal-state. The theory also shows that the unusual magnetic correlations in cuprate superconductors can be ascribed purely to the spin self-energy effects which arise directly from the charge carrier-spin interaction in the kinetic energy of the system.

Fermi surface topology and impurity-induced resonance state in BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors

Within the two-orbital model for BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors, the effect from a single nonmagnetic impurity scattering on the superconducting-state is investigated in terms of the T-matrix approach. By considering three kinds of the typical Fermi surface topology which characterize the essential features of the doping dependence of the electronic structure in BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors, it is found that the impurity scattering on the superconducting-state with the conventional $s$-wave, the extended $s$-wave, the $\pm s$-wave, and the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave symmetries induces \textit{qualitatively} different resonance states due to the evolution of unique nodal structures on the Fermi surface with doping. These impurity-induced resonance states can be verified directly by the scanning tunneling microscopy experiments, and therefore they are proposed as a probe of the superconducting pairing symmetry in BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors.

Stable knots in the trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

The knot of spin texture is studied within the two-component Bose-Einstein condensates which are described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations. We start from the non-interacting equations including an axisymmetric harmonic trap to obtain an exact solution, which exhibits a non-trivial topological structure. The spin-texture is a knot with an integral Hopf invariant. The stability of the knot is verified by numerically evolving the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations along imaginary time.

Pseudogap-induced asymmetric tunneling in cuprate superconductors

The asymmetric tunneling in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By taking into account the interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap, the essential feature of the evolution of the asymmetric tunneling with doping and temperature is qualitatively reproduced. In particular, the asymmetry of the tunneling spectrum in the underdoped regime weakens with increasing doping, and then the symmetric tunneling spectrum recovers in the heavily overdoped regime. The theory also shows that the asymmetric tunneling is a natural consequence due to the presence of the normal-state pseudogap.

Effect of the pseudogap on the infrared response in cuprate superconductors

One of the most essential aspects of cuprate superconductors is a large pseudogap coexisting with a superconducting gap, then some anomalous properties can be understood in terms of the formation of the pseudogap. Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the pseudogap on the infrared response of cuprate superconductors in the superconducting-state is studied. By considering the interplay between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, the electron current-current correlation function is evaluated based on the linear response approach and it then is employed to calculate finite-frequency conductivity. It is shown that in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes, the transfer of the part of the low-energy spectral weight of the conductivity spectrum to the higher energy region to form a midinfrared band is intrinsically associated with the presence of the pseudogap.

Pseudogap and charge dynamics in doped cuprates

Within the microscopic theory of the normal-state pseudogap state, the doping and temperature dependence of the charge dynamics in doped cuprates is studied in the whole doping range from the underdoped to heavily overdoped. The conductivity spectrum in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes contains the low-energy non-Drude peak and unusual midinfrared band. However, the position of the midinfrared band shifts towards to the low-energy non-Drude peak with increasing doping. In particular, the low-energy non-Drude peak incorporates with the midinfrared band in the heavily overdoped regime, and then the low-energy Drude behavior recovers. It is shown that the striking behavior of the low-energy non-Drude peak and unusual midinfrared band in the underdoped and optimally doped regimes is closely related to the emergence of the doping and temperature dependence of the normal-state pseudogap.

Interplay between superconductivity and pseudogap state in bilayer cuprate superconductors

The interplay between the superconducting gap and normal-state pseudogap in the bilayer cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. It is shown that the charge carrier interaction directly from the interlayer coherent hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations does not provide the contribution to the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle-particle channel, while only the charge carrier interaction directly from the intralayer hopping in the kinetic energy by exchanging spin excitations induces the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel and superconducting gap in the particle-particle channel, and then the two-gap behavior is a universal feature for the single layer and bilayer cuprate superconductors.

Interaction effect in two-dimensional Dirac fermions

Based on the Dirac equations in the two-dimensional $π-$ flux model, we study the interaction effects both in nontrivial gapped and gapless Dirac equations with numerical exact diagonalization method. In the presence of the nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions: for nontrivial gapped Dirac equation, the topological phase is robust and persists in a finite region of the phase diagram; while for gapless Dirac equation, charge-density-wave and stripe phases are identified and the phase diagram in $(V_1, V_2)$ plane is obtained. When the next-next-nearest neighbor interaction is further included to gapless Dirac equation, the topological phase expected in the mean-field theory is absent. Our results are related to the possibility of dynamically generating topological phase from the electronic correlations.

Dynamical revivals of the paired superfluidity and counterflow superfluidity

The quantum dynamics of two-species bosons in an optical lattice is studied within the mean-field theory. The quantum coherence experiences periodical collapses and revivals, which depends on the relative strength of the inter-and intra-species interactions. The paired superfluidity and the counterflow superfluidity are identified and are verified by exact diagonaliztion in the two-site Hubbard model. We suggest a dynamical method of implementation and detection for the paired superfluid and the counterflow superfluidity in the optical lattices.

Skyrmion crystals in the pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates

Exact two-dimensional solutions are constructed for the pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose-Einstein condensates which are described by the coupled nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equations where the intraspecies and interspecies coupling constants are assumed to be equal. The equations are decoupled by means of re-combinations of the nonlinear terms of the hyperfine states according to the spatial dimensions. These stationary solutions form various spin textures which are identified as skyrmion crystals. In a special case, the crystal of skyrmion-antiskyrmion pairs is formed in the soliton limit.

Why there is a difference between optimal doping for maximal Tc and critical doping for highest ρ_s in cuprate superconductors?

A long-standing puzzle is why there is a difference between the optimal doping δ_{optimal}=0.15 for the maximal superconducting (SC) transition temperature Tc and the critical doping δ_{critical}=0.19 for the highest superfluid density ρ_s in cuprate superconductors? This puzzle is calling for an explanation. Within the kinetic energy driven SC mechanism, it is shown that except the quasiparticle coherence, ρ_s is dominated by the bare pair gap, while Tc is set by the effective pair gap. By calculation of the ratio of the effective and the bare pair gaps, it is shown that the coupling strength decreases with increasing doping. This doping dependence of the coupling strength induces a shift from the critical doping for the maximal value of the bare pair gap parameter to the optimal doping for the maximal value of the effective pair gap parameter, which leads to a difference between the optimal doping for the maximal Tc and the critical doping for the highest ρ_s.

Impurity effects on the quantum coherence of a few-boson system

The impurity effects on the quantum coherence of a few-boson system are studied within the two-site Hubbard model. Periodical collapses and revivals of coherence occur in the presence of either polarized or unpolarized fermionic impurities. The relative strength $U_{BF}/U_{BB}$ of the boson-fermion versus the boson-boson interactions plays a key role in the coherence revivals. As the average filling of the impurity increases, the coherence revivals remain nearly unaffected for $U_{BF}/U_{BB}=z$ ($z\in Z$ is an integer) while the odd revival peaks are damped for $U_{BF}/U_{BB}=z+1/2$, in agreement with the experimental observations. For unpolarized fermionic impurities, the coherence revivals are irrelevant to the strength of the fermion-fermion interactions.

Fractional topological phase in one-dimensional flatbands with nontrivial topology

We show the existence of the fractional topological phase (FTP) in a one-dimensional interacting fermion model using exact diagonalization, in which the non-interacting part has flatbands with nontrivial topology. In the presence of the nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{1}$, the FTP at filling factor $ν=1/3$ appears. It is characterized by the three-fold degeneracy and the quantized total Berry phase of the ground-states. The FTP is destroyed by a next-nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{2}$ and the phase diagrams in the $(V_{1},V_{2})$ plane is determined. We also present a physical picture of the phase and discuss its existence in the nearly flatband. Within the picture, we argue that the FTP at other filling factors can be generated by introducing proper interactions. The present study contributes to a systematic understanding of the FTPs and can be realized in cold-atom experiments.

Analytical solutions to the spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We analytically solve the one-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations which govern the motion of F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. The nonlinear density-density interactions are decoupled by making use of the unique properties of the Jacobian elliptical functions. Several types of complex stationary solutions are deduced. Furthermore, exact non-stationary solutions to the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equations are constructed by making use of the spin-rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The spin-polarizations exhibit kinked configurations. Our method is applicable to other coupled nonlinear systems.

Pseudogap and its connection to particle-hole asymmetry electronic state and Fermi arcs in cuprate superconductors

The particle-hole asymmetry electronic state of cuprate superconductors and the related doping and temperature dependence of the Fermi arc length are studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. By taking into account the interplay between the SC gap and normal-state pseudogap, the essential feature of the evolution of the Fermi arc length with doping and temperature is qualitatively reproduced. It is shown that the particle-hole asymmetry electronic state is a natural consequence due to the presence the normal-state pseudogap in the particle-hole channel. The Fermi arc length increases with increasing temperatures below the normal-state pseudogap crossover temperature $T^{*}$, and it covers the full length of the Fermi surface for $T>T^{*}$. In particular, in analogy to the temperature dependence of the Fermi arc length, the low-temperature Fermi arc length in the underdoped regime increases with increasing doping, and then it evolves into a continuous contour in momentum space near the end of the superconducting dome. The theory also predicts an almost linear doping dependence of the Fermi arc length.

Doping dependence of electromagnetic response in electron-doped cuprate superconductors

Within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the doping dependence of the electromagnetic response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is studied. It is shown that although there is an electron-hole asymmetry in the phase diagram, the electromagnetic response in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors is similar to that observed in the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. The superfluid density depends linearly on temperature, except for the strong deviation from the linear characteristics at the extremely low temperatures.
