Josephson pi-state in a ferromagnetic insulator

We predict anomalous atomic-scale 0-pi transitions in a Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic-insulator (FI) barrier. The ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We find that the mechanism of the 0-pi transition can be attributed to thickness-dependent phase-shifts between the wave numbers of electrons and holes in FI. Based on these results, we show that stable pi-state can be realized in junctions based on high-Tc superconductors with La$_2$BaCuO$_5$ barrier.

Effect of d-f hybridization on the Josephson current through Eu-chalcogenides

A superconducting ring with a pi junction made from superconductor/ferromagnetic-metal/superconductor (S-FM-S) exhibits a spontaneous current without an external magnetic field in the ground state. Such pi ring provides so-called quiet qubit that can be efficiently decoupled from the fluctuation of the external field. However, the usage of the FM gives rise to strong Ohmic dissipation. Therefore, the realization of pi junctions without FM is expected for qubit applications. We theoretically consider the possibility of the pi coupling for S/Eu-chalcogenides/S junctions based on the d-f Hamiltonian. By use of the Green's function method we found that pi junction can be formed in the case of the finite d-f hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electrons.

Theory of Macroscopic Quantum Dynamics in High-Tc Josephson Junctions

We have theoretically investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) and the influence of nodal quasiparticles and zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT in s-wave/d-wave hybrid Josephson junctions. In contrast to d-wave/d-wave junctions, the low-energy quasiparticle dissipation resulting from nodal quasiparticles and ZES is suppressed due to a quasiparticle-tunneling blockade effect in an isotropic s-wave superconductor. Therefore, the inherent dissipation in these junctions is found to be weak. This result suggests high potential of s-wave/d-wave hybrid junctions for applications in quantum information devices.

Theory of two-dimensional macroscopic quantum tunneling in a Josephson junction coupled with an LC circuit

We investigate classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a Josephson junction coupled with an LC circuit theoretically. The TA and MQT escape rate are calculated analytically by taking into account the two-dimensional nature of the classical and quantum phase dynamics. We find that the MQT escape rate is largely suppressed by the coupling to the LC circuit. On the other hand, this coupling gives rise to slight reduction of the TA escape rate. These results are relevant for the interpretation of a recent experiment on the MQT and TA phenomena in grain boundary YBCO Josephson junctions.

Two-dimensional macroscopic quantum dynamics in YBCO Josephson junctions

We find that the MQT escape rate is largely suppressed by the coupling to the LC circuit. On the other hand, this coupling leads to the slight reduction of the TA escape rate. These results are relevant for the interpretation of a recent experiment on the MQT and TA phenomena in YBCO bi-epitaxial Josephson junctions.

Theory of two-dimensional macroscopic quantum tunneling in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-δ}$ Josephson junctions coupled to an LC circuit

We investigate classical thermal activation (TA) and macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) for a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) Josephson junction coupled to an LC circuit theoretically. Due to the coupling between the junction and the LC circuit, the macroscopic phase dynamics can be described as the escape process of a fictitious particle with an anisotropic mass moving in a two-dimensional potential. We analytically calculate the escape rate including both the TA and MQT regime by taking into account the peculiar dynamical nature of the system. In addtion to large suppression of the MQT rate at zero temperature, we study details of the temperature dependece of the escape rate across a crossover region. These results are in an excellent agreement with recent experimental data for the MQT and TA rate in a YBCO biepitaxial Josephson junction. Therefore the coupling to the LC circuit is essential in understanding the macroscopic quantum dynamics and the qubit operation based on the YBCO biepitaxial Josephson junctions.

Theory of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in High-T_c c-Axis Josephson Junctions

We study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in c-axis twist Josephson junctions made of high-T_c superconductors in order to clarify the influence of the anisotropic order parameter symmetry (OPS) on MQT. The dependence of the MQT rate on the twist angle $γ$ about the c-axis is calculated by using the functional integral and the bounce method. Due to the d-wave OPS, the $γ$ dependence of standard deviation of the switching current distribution and the crossover temperature from thermal activation to MQT are found to be given by $\cos2γ$ and $\sqrt{\cos2γ}$, respectively. We also show that a dissipative effect resulting from the nodal quasiparticle excitation on MQT is negligibly small, which is consistent with recent MQT experiments using Bi${}_2$Sr${}_2$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8 + δ}$ intrinsic junctions. These results indicate that MQT in c-axis twist junctions becomes a useful experimental tool for testing the OPS of high-T_c materials at low temperature, and suggest high potential of such junctions for qubit applications.

Theory of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and Dissipation in High-Tc Josephson Junctions

We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in in-plane high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions and the influence of the nodal-quasiparticle and the zero energy bound states (ZES) on MQT. We have shown that the presence of the ZES at the interface between the insulator and the superconductor leads to strong Ohmic quasiparticle dissipation. Therefore, the MQT rate is noticeably suppressed in comparison with the c-axis junctions in which ZES are completely absent.

Macroscopic quantum dynamics of pi-junctions with ferromagnetic insulators

We theoretically investigate the macroscopic quantum dynamics of a pi junction with a superconductor (S) and a multiferroic material or a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). By deriving the effective action from a microscopic Hamiltonian, a pi-junction qubit (a S-FI-S superconducting quantum interference device ring) is proposed. In this qubit, a quantum two-level system is spontaneously generated and the effect of the quasiparticle dissipation is found to be very weak. These features make it possible to realize a quiet qubit with high coherency. We also investigate macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in current-biased S-FI-S pi junctions and show that the influence of the quasiparticle dissipation on MQT is negligibly small.

Decoherence of Phase Qubit using High-Tc Superconductor

We discuss how to make use of high-Tc d-wave Josephson junctions in the construction of a phase qubit. We especially focus on the effect of the quasiparticle dissipation and the zero energy bound state on the macroscopic quantum tunneling which corresponds to the final measurement process of the d-wave phase qubit.

Effect of zero energy bound states on macroscopic quantum tunneling in high-Tc superconductor junctions

The macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in the current biased high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions and the effect of the zero energy bound states (ZES) on the MQT are theoretically investigated. We obtained the analytical formula of the MQT rate and showed that the presence of the ZES at the normal/superconductor interface leads to a strong Ohmic quasiparticle dissipation. Therefore, the MQT rate is noticeably inhibited in compared with the c-axis junctions in which the ZES are completely absent.

Recent phase sensitive experiments on high Tc superconductors, e.g., YBa_2Cu_3O_7 single crystals, have established the d-wave nature of the cuprate materials. Here we discuss how to make use of d-wave Josephson junctions in the construction of a phase qubit. We especially focus on the effect of quasiparticle dissipation on the macroscopic quantum tunneling which corresponds to the measurement process for the d-wave phase qubit.

Quantum Information Processing and Entanglement in Solid State Devices

Control over electron-spin states, such as coherent manipulation, filtering and measurement promises access to new technologies in conventional as well as in quantum computation and quantum communication. In this paper, we review recent theoretical proposal of using electron spins in quantum confined structures as qubits. We also present a theoretical proposal for testing Bell's inequality in nano-electronics devices. We show that the entanglement of two electron spins can be detected in the spin filter effect in the nanostructure semiconductor / ferromagnetic semiconductor / semiconductor junction. In particular, we show how to test Bell's inequality via the measurement of the current-current correlation function in this setup.

Information Theoretical Approach to Control of Quantum Mechanical Systems

Fundamental limits on the controllability of quantum mechanical systems are discussed in the light of quantum information theory. It is shown that the amount of entropy-reduction that can be extracted from a quantum system by feedback controller is upper bounded by a sum of the decrease of entropy achievable in open-loop control and the mutual information between the quantum system and the controller. This upper bound sets a fundamental limit on the performance of any quantum controllers whose designs are based on the possibilities to attain low entropy states. An application of this approach pertaining to quantum error correction is also discussed.

Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and Quasiparticle Dissipation in d-wave Superconductor Josephson Junctions

We examine the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in high-Tc superconductor Josephson junctions with a d-wave order parameter. Using microscopic Hamiltonian and the functional integral method, we analytically obtain the MQT rate (the inverse lifetime of the metastable state) for the c-axis twist Josephson junctions. In the case of the zero twist angle, the system shows the super-Ohmic dissipation due to the presence of the nodal quasiparticle tunneling. Therefore, the MQT rate is strongly suppressed in compared with the finite twist angle cases.

Anomalous Diffusion and Quantum Interference Effect in Nano-scale Periodic Lorentz Gas

Recent advances in submicrometer technology have made it possible to confine the two-dimensional electron gas into high-mobility semi-conductor heterostructures. Such structure with a lattice of electron-depleted circular obstacles are called quantum antidot lattices, or quantum Lorentz gas systems. By using the semiclassical scattering theory, we show that quantum interference in finite-size open Lorentz gas systems is expected to reflect the difference between normal and anomalous diffusions, i.e., Lévy flights.

Test of Bell's Inequality using the Spin Filter Effect in Ferromagnetic Semiconductor Micro-structures

A theoretical proposal for testing Bell's inequality in mesoscopic systems is presented. We show that the entanglement of two electron spins can be detected in the spin filter effect in the mesoscopic semiconductor / ferromagnetic semiconductor / semiconductor junction. The current-current correlation function is calculated by use of the quantum scattering theory and we compare it with the local hidden variable theory. We also discuss the influence of an imperfect spin filter and derive the condition to see the violation of Bell's inequality experimentally.

Quantum Interleaver: Quantum Error Correction for Burst Error

The concept of quantum interleaver and a simple method of quantum burst-error correction is proposed. By using the quantum interleaver, any quantum burst-errors that have occurred spread over the interleaved code word, so that we can construct good quantum burst-error correcting codes without increasing the redundancy of the code. We also discuss the general method of constructing the quantum circuit for the quantum interleaver and the quantum network.
