Control of Circularly Polarized THz Wave from Intrinsic Josephson Junctions by Local Heating

This paper reports a practical method of generating circularly polarized terahertz (THz) waves from intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) and controlling their polarization states by external local heating. We theoretically find that a mesa-structure IJJ whose geometry is almost square can emit circularly polarized THz waves by local heating of the mesa. Moreover, we demonstrate that the polarization states of the THz waves change dramatically with the local heating position. Our results indicate that the use of local heating can provide a high level of controllability of the THz emissions and significantly extend the range of applications of IJJ-based THz emitters.

Interplay of the inverse proximity effect and magnetic field in out-of-equilibrium single-electron devices

The magnetic field is shown to affect significantly non-equilibrium quasiparticle (QP) distributions under conditions of inverse proximity effect on the remarkable example of a single-electron hybrid turnstile. This effect suppresses the gap in the superconducting leads in the vicinity of turnstile junctions with a Coulomb blockaded island, thus, trapping hot QPs in this region. Applied magnetic field creates additional QP traps in the form of vortices or regions with reduced superconducting gap in the leads resulting in release of QPs away from junctions. We present clear experimental evidence of such interplay of the inverse proximity effect and a magnetic field revealing itself in the superconducting gap enhancement in a magnetic field as well as in significant improvement of the turnstile characteristics. The observed interplay of the inverse proximity effect and external magnetic field, and its theoretical explanation in the context of QP overheating are important for various superconducting and hybrid nanoelectronic devices, which find applications in quantum computation, photon detection and quantum metrology.

Possibility to enhance teraherz emission from intrinsic Josephson junction by external local heating

We theoretically propose a practical method for realizing intense terahertz (THz) emission from intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) using an external heat source. An artificial inhomogeneous temperature distribution by the local heating strongly excites the Josephson plasma wave inside IJJs and enhances THz emission power. We show optimum heating conditions for achieving high power THz emission. Our result indicates that local heat control is a powerful method to realize practical solid-state THz-emitters utilizing IJJs.

Two-dimensional macroscopic quantum tunneling in multi-gap superconductor Josephson junctions

Low-temperature characters of superconducting devices yield definite probes for different superconducting phenomena. We study the macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a Josephson junction, composed of a single-gap superconductor and a two-gap superconductor. Since this junction has two kinds to the superconducting phase differences, calculating the MQT escape rate requires the analysis of quantum tunneling in a multi-dimensional configuration space. Our approach is the semi-classical approximation along a 1D curve in a 2D potential- energy landscape, connecting two adjacent potential (local) minimums through a saddle point. We find that this system has two plausible tunneling paths; an in-phase path and an out-of-phase path. The former is characterized by the Josephson-plasma frequency, whereas the latter is by the frequency of the characteristic collective mode in a two-band superconductor, Josephson- Leggett mode. Depending on external bias current and inter-band Josephson-coupling energy, one of them mainly contributes to the MQT. Our numerical calculations show that the difference between the in-phase path and the out-of-phase path is manifest, with respect to the bias- current-dependence of the MQT escape rate. This result suggests that our MQT setting be an indicator of the Josephson-Leggett mode.

Effects of lasing in a one-dimensional quantum metamaterial

Electromagnetic pulse propagation in a quantum metamaterial - artificial, globally quantum coherent optical medium - is numerically simulated. We show that for the quantum metamaterials based on superconducting quantum bits, initialized in an easily reachable factorized state, lasing in microwave range is triggered, accompanied by the chaotization of qubit states and generation of higher harmonics. These effects may provide a tool for characterization and optimization of quantum metamaterial prototypes.

Heat transport and electron cooling in ballistic normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junctions

We investigate electron cooling based on a clean normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junction. Due to the suppression of the Andreev reflection by the spin-filter effect, the cooling power of the system is found to be extremely higher than that for conventional normal-metal/nonmagnetic-insulator/superconductor coolers. Therefore we can extract large amount of heat from normal metals. Our results strongly indicate the practical usefulness of the spin-filter effect for cooling detectors, sensors, and quantum bits.

Theory of macroscopic quantum tunneling with Josephson-Leggett collective excitations in multi-band superconducting Josephson junctions

Collective excitations reveal fundamental properties and potential applications of superconducting states. We theoretically study macroscopic quantum tunneling (MQT) in a Josephson junction composed of multi-band superconductors, focusing on a phase mode induced by inter-band fluctuations: the Josephson-Leggett (JL) collective excitation mode. Using the imaginary-time path-integral method, we derive a formula for the MQT escape rate for low-temperature switching events. We clarify that the JL mode has two major effects on the MQT: (i) the zero-point fluctuations enhance the escape rate, and (ii) the quantum dissipation induced by the couplings to the gauge-invariant phase difference suppresses the quantum tunneling. We show that the enhancement exceeds the suppression for a wide range of junction parameters. This enhancement originates from the single-mode interaction between the tunneling variable and the inter-band fluctuations.

Intense terahertz emission from intrinsic Josephson junctions by external heat control

A practical method for realizing intense terahertz (THz) emission from intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) by utilizing external local-heating is proposed and demonstrated theoretically. An artificial temperature distribution induced by local heating strongly excites Josephson plasma waves inside IJJs. Accordingly, the emission power of the THz wave is enhanced drastically, and it can reach the order of mW. Our result indicates that the use of local heat control is a powerful method to realize practical solid-state THz-emitters based on IJJs.

Robustness of Spin-Triplet Pairing and Singlet-Triplet Pairing Crossover in Superconductor/Ferromagnet Hybrids

We have investigated the proximity effect in superconductor/ferromagnet junctions in a systematic manner to discuss the relationship between the zero-energy peak (ZEP) of the local density of states (LDOS) and spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing. By exactly solving the nonlinear Usadel equations, we have found that the ZEP is realized in a wide range of geometrical and material parameters in the case of the noncollinear magnetization. This strongly suggests the robustness of the ZEP induced by spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing in such systems. We also found that the crossover from singlet pairing to triplet pairing can be detected by measuring the F layer thickness dependence of the ZEP height. Furthermore, we show how to observe signatures of spin-triplet odd-frequency pairing and the pairing crossover by LDOS measurement. Our results provide a direct way to experimentally detect signatures of the odd-frequency pairing state.

Efficient electron refrigeration using superconductor/spin-filter devices

Efficient electron-refrigeration based on a normal-metal/spin-filter/superconductor junction is proposed and demonstrated theoretically. The spin-filtering effect leads to values of the cooling power much higher than in conventional normal-metal/nonmagnetic-insulator/superconductor coolers and allows for an efficient extraction of heat from the normal metal. We demonstrate that highly efficient cooling can be realized in both ballistic and diffusive multi-channel junctions in which the reduction of the electron temperature from 300 mK to around 50 mK can be achieved. Our results indicate the practical usefulness of spin-filters for efficiently cooling detectors, sensors, and quantum devices.

Spectrum of Andreev bound states in Josepshon junctions with a ferromagnetic insulator

Ferromagnetic-insulator (FI) based Josephson junctions are promising candidates for a coherent superconducting quantum bit as well as a classical superconducting logic circuit. Recently the appearance of an intriguing atomic-scale 0-pi transition has been theoretically predicted. In order to uncover the mechanism of this phenomena, we numerically calculate the spectrum of Andreev bound states in a FI barrier by diagonalizing the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. We show that Andreev spectrum drastically depends on the parity of the FI-layer number L and accordingly the pi (0) state is always more stable than the 0 (pi) state if L is odd (even).

Atomic scale 0-pi transition in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator/high-T superconductor Josephson junction

We study the Josephson transport in a high-Tc superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator(FI)/high-Tc superconductor numerically. We found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. More remarkably the ground state of such junction alternates between 0- and pi-states when thickness of FI is increasing by a single atomic layer. We propose an experimental setup for observing the atomic-scale 0-pi transition. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent quantum bits.

Tunneling Hamiltonian description of the atomic-scale 0-pi transition in superconductor/ferromagnetic-insulator junctions

We show a perturbation theory of the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs). Recently we have found that the appearance of the atomic scale 0-pi transition in such junctions based on numerical calculations. In order to explore the mechanism of this anomalous transition, we have analytically calculated the Josephson current using the tunneling Hamiltonian theory and found that the spin dependent pi-phase shift in the FI barrier gives the atomic scale 0-pi transition.

Such ferromagnetic-oxide based Josephson junctions may become an element in the architecture of future quantum computers.

Theory of quantum transport in Josephson junctions with a ferromagnetic insulator

We investigate the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs) by taking into account the band structure of FIs explicitly. Using the recursive Green's function method, we found the formation of a pi-junction in such systems. Moreover the atomic-scale 0-pi oscillation is induced by increasing the thickness of FI and its oscillation period is universal, i.e., just single atomic layer. Based on these results, we show that stable pi-state can be realized in junctions based on high-Tc superconductors with La$_2$BaCuO$_5$ barrier. Such FI-based Josephson junctions may become an element in the architecture of future quantum computers.

Numerical study of pi-junction using spin filtering barriers

We numerically investigate the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs) by taking into account its band structure. By use of the recursive Green's function method, we found the formation of the pi junction in the case of the fully spin-polarized FI (FPFI), e.g., La$_2$BaCuO$_5$. Moreover, the 0-pi transition is induced by increasing the thickness of FPFI. On the other hand, Josephson current through the Eu chalcogenides shows the pi junction behavior in the case of the strong d-f hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electrons of Eu. Such FI-based Josephson junctions may become a element in the architecture of future quantum information devices.

Multi-Junction Switching in Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ Intrinsic Josephson Junctions

We study the dynamics of multi-junction switching (MJS): several intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) in an array switch to the finite voltage state simultaneously. The number of multi-switching junctions ($N$) was successfully tuned by changing the load resistance serially connected to an Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ IJJ array. The independence of the escape rates of $N$ in the macroscopic quantum tunneling regime indicates that MJS is a $successive$ switching process rather than a $collective$ process. The origin of MJS is explained by the gradient of a load curve and the relative magnitudes of the switching currents of quasiparticle branches in the current-voltage plane.

Theory of Josephson transport through spintronics nano-structure

We study the Josephson transport through ferromagnetic insulators (FIs) by taking into account its band structure explicitly. In the case of the fully polarized FIs (FPFIs), we found the formation of a pi-junction and an atomic-scale 0-pi transition induced by increasing the FI thickness. More remarkably, in the Josephson junction through spin-filter materials such as Eu chalcogenides, the orbital hybridization between the conduction d and the localized f electron gives rise to the pi-junction behavior. Such FI-based pi-junctions can be used to implement highly-coherent solid-state quantum bits.
