Melonic Dominance in Subchromatic Sextic Tensor Models

We study tensor models based on $O(N)^r$ symmetry groups constructed out of rank-$r$ tensors with order-$q$ interaction vertices. We refer to those tensor models for which $r<q-1$ as \textit{subchromatic}. We focus most of our attention on sextic ($q=6$) models with maximally-single-trace interactions. We show that only three subchromatic sextic maximally-single-trace interaction vertices exist: these are the $r=3$ prism, the $r=3$ wheel (or $K_{3,3}$) and the $r=4$ octahedron. For theories based on these interactions we demonstrate that the set of Feynman diagrams that contribute to the free energy in the large $N$ limit are melonic (or closely related to melonic diagrams, in the case of the prism) and thus can be explicitly summed.

Magic State Distillation with the Ternary Golay Code

The ternary Golay code -- one of the first and most beautiful classical error-correcting codes discovered -- naturally gives rise to an 11-qutrit quantum error correcting code. We apply this code to magic state distillation, a leading approach to fault-tolerant quantum computing. We find that the 11-qutrit Golay code can distill the "most magic" qutrit state -- an eigenstate of the qutrit Fourier transform known as the strange state -- with cubic error-suppression and a remarkably high threshold. It also distills the "second-most magic" qutrit state, the Norell state, with quadratic error-suppression and an equally high threshold to depolarizing noise.

Contextual bound states for qudit magic state distillation

Identifying necessary and sufficient conditions for universal quantum computing is a long-standing open problem for which contextuality is, perhaps, the only promising solution [Howard et al., Nature 510, 351 (2014)]. To justify this conjecture, Howard et al. showed that contextuality is equivalent to Wigner negativity for qudits, and is therefore necessary and possibly sufficient for qudit magic state distillation. Here, we reformulate magic state distillation in the language of discrete phase space, to show that any finite qudit magic state distillation routine contains bound states outside the Wigner polytope -- these states exhibit contextuality but are useless for magic state distillation.

Prismatic Large $N$ Models for Bosonic Tensors

We study the $O(N)^3$ symmetric quantum field theory of a bosonic tensor $ϕ^{abc}$ with sextic interactions. Its large $N$ limit is dominated by a positive-definite operator, whose index structure has the topology of a prism. We present a large $N$ solution of the model using Schwinger-Dyson equations to sum the leading diagrams, finding that for $2.81 < d < 3$ and for $d<1.68$ the spectrum of bilinear operators has no complex scaling dimensions. We also develop perturbation theory in $3-ε$ dimensions including eight $O(N)^3$ invariant operators necessary for the renormalizability. For sufficiently large $N$, we find a "prismatic" fixed point of the renormalization group, where all eight coupling constants are real. The large $N$ limit of the resulting $ε$ expansions of various operator dimensions agrees with the Schwinger-Dyson equations. Furthermore, the $ε$ expansion allows us to calculate the $1/N$ corrections to operator dimensions. The prismatic fixed point in $3-ε$ dimensions survives down to $N\approx 53.65$, where it merges with another fixed point and becomes complex. We also discuss the $d=1$ model where our approach gives a slightly negative scaling dimension for $ϕ$, while the spectrum of bilinear operators is free of complex dimensions.

Demonstration of the No-Hiding Theorem on the 5 Qubit IBM Quantum Computer in a Category Theoretic Framework

Quantum no-Hiding theorem, first proposed by Braunstein and Pati [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 080502 (2007)], was verified experimentally by Samal et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 186, 080401 (2011)] using NMR quantum processor. Till then, this fundamental test has not been explored in any of the experimental architecture. Here, we demonstrate the above no-hiding theorem using the IBM 5Q quantum processor. Categorical algebra developed by Coecke and Duncan [New J. Phys. 13, 043016 (2011)] has been used for better visualization of the no-hiding theorem by analyzing the quantum circuit using the ZX calculus. The experimental results confirm the recovery of missing information by the application of local unitary operations on the ancillary qubits.

Bootstrap and collider physics of parity violating conformal field theories in $d=3$

We study the crossing equations in $d=3$ for the four point function of two $U(1)$ currents and two scalars including the presence of a parity violating term for the $s$-channel stress tensor exchange. We show the existence of a new tower of double trace operators in the $t$-channel whose presence is necessary for the crossing equation to be satisfied and determine the corresponding large spin parity violating OPE coefficients. Contrary to the parity even situation, we find that the parity odd $s$-channel light cone stress tensor block do not have logarithmic singularities. This implies that the parity odd term does not contribute to anomalous dimensions in the crossed channel at this order in light cone expansion. We then study the constraints imposed by reflection positivity and crossing symmetry on such a four point function. We reproduce the previously known parity odd collider bounds through this analysis. The contribution of the parity violating term in the collider bound results from a square root branch cut present in the light cone block as opposed to a logarithmic cut in the parity even case, together with the application of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality.

Normal form for single-qutrit Clifford+T operators and synthesis of single-qutrit gates

We study single-qutrit gates composed of Clifford and $T$ gates, using the qutrit version of the $T$ gate proposed by Howard and Vala. We propose a normal form for single-qutrit gates analogous to the Matsumoto-Amano normal form for qubits. We prove that the normal form is optimal with respect to the number of $T$ gates used and that any string of qutrit Clifford+$T$ operators can be put into this normal form in polynomial time. We also prove that this form is unique and provide an algorithm for exact synthesis of any single qutrit Clifford+$T$ operator.

A Complex Fermionic Tensor Model in $d$ Dimensions

In this note, we study a melonic tensor model in $d$ dimensions based on three-index Dirac fermions with a four-fermion interaction. Summing the melonic diagrams at strong coupling allows one to define a formal large-$N$ saddle point in arbitrary $d$ and calculate the spectrum of scalar bilinear singlet operators. For $d=2-ε$ the theory is an infrared fixed point, which we find has a purely real spectrum that we determine numerically for arbitrary $d<2$, and analytically as a power series in $ε$. The theory appears to be weakly interacting when $ε$ is small, suggesting that fermionic tensor models in 1-dimension can be studied in an $ε$ expansion. For $d>2$, the spectrum can still be calculated using the saddle point equations, which may define a formal large-$N$ ultraviolet fixed point analogous to the Gross-Neveu model in $d>2$. For $2<d<6$, we find that the spectrum contains at least one complex scalar eigenvalue (similar to the complex eigenvalue present in the bosonic tensor model recently studied by Giombi, Klebanov and Tarnopolsky) which indicates that the theory is unstable. We also find that the fixed point is weakly-interacting when $d=6$ (or more generally $d=4n+2$) and has a real spectrum for $6<d<6.14$ which we present as a power series in $ε$ in $6+ε$ dimensions.

On the Higher Spin Spectrum of Chern-Simons Theory coupled to Fermions in the Large Flavour Limit

In this note, we compute the higher spin spectrum of $U(M)_k$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to $N$ flavours of fundamental fermions, in the limit $N\gg M$ with the 't Hooft coupling $λ_M =\frac{N}{k_m}$ held fixed, to order $M/N$. This theory possesses a slightly broken higher spin symmetry, and may be of interest from the perspective of higher-spin and non-supersymmetric holography. We find that anomalous dimensions of the higher spin currents achieve a finite value at strong coupling $λ_M \rightarrow \infty$, which grows with spin as $\log s$ for large $s$, as expected for gauge theories.

Anomalous Dimensions in Non-Supersymmetric Bifundamental Chern-Simons Theories

Non-abelian Chern-Simons theories coupled to fermions are known to provide an interesting class of non-supersymmetric conformal fixed points \cite{Giombi:2011kc}. These theories, particularly those based on bifundamental matter, are important because they may provide simple non-supersymmetric examples of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For instance, it seems natural to conjecture that $O(N)_{-k}\times O(N)_k$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to Majorana fermions transforming in a bi-vector representation may be dual to pure Einstein gravity with a small negative cosmological constant in the "M-theory" limit where $k=1$ and $N$ is large. While it is extremely difficult to directly study such bifundamental theories when $k=1$ or even at strong 't Hooft coupling $λ=\frac{N}{k}$, it is possible to calculate physical quantities to all orders in $λ$ in a $U(M)_{k_M} \times U(N)_{k_N}$ theory, in the limit $M \ll N$, in an $M/N$ expansion. To illustrate this, we calculate the anomalous dimension of the primary operator $\barψψ$, to first order in $M/N$, to all orders in $λ_M=\frac{N}{k_M}$, but with $λ_N=\frac{N}{k_N}=0$. We also comment on possible bosonization dualities for bifundamental Chern-Simons theories.

Constraints on parity violating conformal field theories in $d=3$

We derive constraints on three-point functions involving the stress tensor, $T$, and a conserved $U(1)$ current, $j$, in 2+1 dimensional conformal field theories that violate parity, using conformal collider bounds introduced by Hofman and Maldacena. Conformal invariance allows parity-odd tensor-structures for the $\langle T T T \rangle$ and $ \langle j j T \rangle$ correlation functions which are unique to three space-time dimensions. Let the parameters which determine the $\langle T T T \rangle$ correlation function be $t_4$ and $α_T$ , where $α_T$ is the parity-violating contribution. Similarly let the parameters which determine $ \langle j j T \rangle$ correlation function be $a_2$, and $α_J$ , where $α_J$ is the parity-violating contribution. We show that the parameters $(t_4, α_T)$ and $(a_2, α_J)$ are bounded to lie inside a disc at the origin of the $t_4$ - $α_T$ plane and the $a_2$ - $α_J$ plane respectively. We then show that large $N$ Chern-Simons theories coupled to a fundamental fermion/boson lie on the circle which bounds these discs. The `t Hooft coupling determines the location of these theories on the boundary circles.

Spectral sum rules for conformal field theories in arbitrary dimensions

We derive spectral sum rules in the shear channel for conformal field theories at finite temperature in general $d\geq 3$ dimensions. The sum rules result from the OPE of the stress tensor at high frequency as well as the hydrodynamic behaviour of the theory at low frequencies. The sum rule states that a weighted integral of the spectral density over frequencies is proportional to the energy density of the theory. We show that the proportionality constant can be written in terms the Hofman-Maldacena variables $t_2, t_4$ which determine the three point function of the stress tensor. For theories which admit a two derivative gravity dual this proportionality constant is given by $\frac{d}{2(d+1)}$. We then use causality constraints and obtain bounds on the sum rule which are valid in any conformal field theory. Finally we demonstrate that the high frequency behaviour of the spectral function in the vector and the tensor channel are also determined by the Hofman-Maldacena variables.

A test of bosonization at the level of four-point functions in Chern-Simons vector models

We study four-point functions in Chern-Simons vector models in the large $N$ limit. We compute the four-point function of the scalar primary to all orders in the `t Hooft coupling $λ=N/k$ in $U(N)_k$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to a fundamental fermion, in both the critical and non-critical theory, for a particular case of the external momenta. These theories cover the entire 3-parameter "quasi-boson" and 2-parameter "quasi-fermion" families of 3-dimensional quantum field theories with a slightly-broken higher spin symmetry. Our results are consistent with the celebrated bosonization duality, as we explicitly verify by calculating four-point functions in the free critical and non-critical bosonic theories.

A Note on CFT Correlators in Three Dimensions

In this note we present a simple method of constructing general conformally invariant three point functions of operators of various spins in three dimensions. Upon further imposing current conservation conditions, we find new parity violating structures for the three point functions involving either the stress-energy tensor, spin one currents, or higher spin currents. We find that all parity preserving structures for conformally invariant three point functions of higher spin conserved currents can be realized by free fields, whereas there is at most one parity violating structure for three point functions for each set of spins, which is not realized by free fields.

Chern-Simons Theory with Vector Fermion Matter

We study three dimensional conformal field theories described by U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k coupled to massless fermions in the fundamental representation. By solving a Schwinger-Dyson equation in lightcone gauge, we compute the exact planar free energy of the theory at finite temperature on R^2 as a function of the 't Hooft coupling lambda=N/k. Employing a dimensional reduction regularization scheme, we find that the free energy vanishes at |lambda|=1; the conformal theory does not exist for |lambda|>1. We analyze the operator spectrum via the anomalous conservation relation for higher spin currents, and in particular show that the higher spin currents do not develop anomalous dimensions at leading order in 1/N. We present an integral equation whose solution in principle determines all correlators of these currents at leading order in 1/N and present explicit perturbative results for all three point functions up to two loops. We also discuss a lightcone Hamiltonian formulation of this theory where a W-infinity algebra arises. The maximally supersymmetric version of our theory is ABJ model with one gauge group taken to be U(1), demonstrating that a pure higher spin gauge theory arises as a limit of string theory.

Holography of Dyonic Dilaton Black Branes

We study black branes carrying both electric and magnetic charges in Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton-axion in asymptotically anti de Sitter space. After reviewing and extending earlier results for the case of electrically charged branes, we characterise the thermodynamics of magnetically charged branes. We then focus on dyonic branes in theories which enjoy an $SL(2,R)$ electric-magnetic duality. Using $SL(2,R)$, we are able to generate solutions with arbitrary charges starting with the electrically charged solution, and also calculate transport coefficients. These solutions all exhibit a Lifshitz-like near-horizon geometry. The system behaves as expected for a charged fluid in a magnetic field, with non-vanishing Hall conductance and vanishing DC longitudinal conductivity at low temperatures. Its response is characterised by a cyclotron resonance at a frequency proportional to the magnetic field, for small magnetic fields. Interestingly, the DC Hall conductance is related to the attractor value of the axion. We also study the attractor flows of the dilaton-axion, both in cases with and without an additional modular-invariant scalar potential. The flows exhibit intricate behaviour related to the duality symmetry. Finally, we briefly discuss attractor flows in more general dilaton-axion theories which do not enjoy $SL(2,R)$ symmetry.

Holography of Charged Dilaton Black Holes

We study charged dilaton black branes in $AdS_4$. Our system involves a dilaton $ϕ$ coupled to a Maxwell field $F_{μν}$ with dilaton-dependent gauge coupling, ${1\over g^2} = f^2(ϕ)$. First, we find the solutions for extremal and near extremal branes through a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. The near horizon geometries in the simplest cases, where $f(ϕ) = e^{αϕ}$, are Lifshitz-like, with a dynamical exponent $z$ determined by $α$. The black hole thermodynamics varies in an interesting way with $α$, but in all cases the entropy is vanishing and the specific heat is positive for the near extremal solutions. We then compute conductivity in these backgrounds. We find that somewhat surprisingly, the AC conductivity vanishes like $ω^2$ at T=0 independent of $α$. We also explore the charged black brane physics of several other classes of gauge-coupling functions $f(ϕ)$. In addition to possible applications in AdS/CMT, the extremal black branes are of interest from the point of view of the attractor mechanism. The near horizon geometries for these branes are universal, independent of the asymptotic values of the moduli, and describe generic classes of endpoints for attractor flows which are different from $AdS_2\times R^2$.
