Manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics with microwave and vector light shift

We report the observation and manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics in a spin-1 mixture of ultracold $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na atoms. The dynamics is driven by the interspecies spin-dependent interaction and shows a pronounced dependence on magnetic fields with influences from both linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts. Similar to the well-studied homonuclear cases, the interspecies spin dynamics can be controlled by tuning the quadratic Zeeman shift with far-detuned microwave fields. In addition, we successfully realize spin dynamics control with vector light shifts which act as a species-selective effective magnetic field on $^{87}$Rb atoms. Both methods show negligible loss of atoms thus will be powerful techniques for investigating spin dynamics with fast temporal and high spatial resolutions.

The Role of the Effective Range in Resonantly Interacting Fermi Gases: How Breaking Scale Symmetry Affects the Bulk Viscosity

We investigate the role of the effective range on the bulk viscosity of $s$- and $p$-wave Fermi gases. At resonance, the presence of the effective range breaks the scale invariance of the system, and hence results in a non-zero bulk viscosity. However, we show that the effective range plays a very different role in the two cases. In the $s$-wave case, the role of the effective range is perturbative, and its contribution to the bulk viscosity vanishes in the limit of zero effective range. On the other hand, the effective range in $p$-wave Fermi gases leads to a non-zero bulk viscosity, even in the zero-range limit. We setup the general diagrammatic approach to compute the bulk viscosity spectral function that includes the effects of the effective range. We then compute the analytic expressions for the spectral function in the high temperature limit, at low- and high-frequencies. We also derive the sum rules for the bulk viscosity spectral function for both $s$- and $p$-wave gases.

Collective excitations in two-dimensional SU($N$) Fermi gases with tunable spin

We measure collective excitations of a harmonically trapped two-dimensional (2D) SU($N$) Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb confined to a stack of layers formed by a one-dimensional optical lattice. Quadrupole and breathing modes are excited and monitored in the collisionless regime $\lvert\ln(k_F a_{2D})\rvert\gg 1$ with tunable spin. We observe that the quadrupole mode frequency decreases with increasing number of spin components due to the amplification of the interaction effect by $N$ in agreement with a theoretical prediction based on 2D kinetic equations. The breathing mode frequency, however, is measured to be twice the dipole oscillation frequency regardless of $N$. We also follow the evolution of collective excitations in the dimensional crossover from two to three dimensions and characterize the damping rate of quadrupole and breathing modes for tunable SU($N$) fermions, both of which reveal the enhanced inter-particle collisions for larger spin. Our result paves the way to investigate the collective property of 2D SU($N$) Fermi liquid with enlarged spin.

Grüneisen Parameters: origin, identity and quantum refrigeration

In solid state physics, the Grüneisen parameter (GP), originally introduced in the study of the effect of changing the volume of a crystal lattice on its vibrational frequency, has been widely used to investigate the characteristic energy scales of systems with respect to the changes of external potentials. On the other hand, the GP is little investigated in a strongly interacting quantum gas systems. Here we report on our general results on the origin of GP, new identity and caloric effects in quantum gases of ultracold atoms. We prove that the symmetry of the dilute quantum gas systems leads to a simple identity among three different types of GPs, quantifying caloric effect induced respectively by variations of volume, magnetic field and interaction. Using exact Bethe ansatz solutions, we present a rigorous study of these different GPs and the quantum refrigeration in one-dimensional Bose and Femi gases. Based on the exact equations of states of these systems, we obtain analytic results for the singular behaviour of the GPs and the caloric effects at quantum criticality. We also predict the existence of the lowest temperature for cooling near a quantum phase transition. It turns out that the interaction ramp-up and -down in quantum gases provides a promising protocol of quantum refrigeration in addition to the usual adiabatic demagnetization cooling in solid state materials.

Quantum Spin Dynamics in a Normal Bose Gas with Spin-orbit Coupling

In this Letter, we investigate spin dynamics of a two-component Bose gas with spin-orbit coupling realised in cold atom experiments. We derive coupled hydrodynamic equations for number and spin densities as well as their associated currents. Specialising to quasi-one-dimensional situation, we obtain analytic solutions of the spin helix structure and its dynamics in both adiabatic and diabatic regimes. In the adiabatic regime, the transverse spin decays parabolically in the short-time limit and exponentially in the long time limit, depending on initial polarisation. In contrast, in the diabatic regime, transverse spin density and current oscillate in a way similar to the charge-current oscillation in an undamped LC circuit. The effects of Rabi coupling on the short-time spin dynamics is also discussed. Finally, using realistic experimental parameters for $^{87}$Rb, we show that the time scales for spin dynamics is of order of milliseconds to a few seconds and can be observed experimentally.

Momentum distribution and contacts of one-dimensional spinless Fermi gases with an attractive p-wave interaction

We present a rigorous study of momentum distribution and p-wave contacts of one dimensional (1D) spinless Fermi gases with an attractive p-wave interaction. Using the Bethe wave function, we analytically calculate the large-momentum tail of momentum distribution of the model. We show that the leading ($\sim 1/p^{2}$) and sub-leading terms ($\sim 1/p^{4}$) of the large-momentum tail are determined by two contacts $C_2$ and $C_4$, which we show, by explicit calculation, are related to the short-distance behaviour of the two-body correlation function and its derivatives. We show as one increases the 1D scattering length, the contact $C_2$ increases monotonically from zero while $C_4$ exhibits a peak for finite scattering length. In addition, we obtain analytic expressions for p-wave contacts at finite temperature from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations in both weakly and strongly attractive regimes.

Anomalous Conductance of a strongly interacting Fermi Gas through a Quantum Point Contact

In this work we study the particle conductance of a strongly interacting Fermi gas through a quantum point contact. With an atom-molecule two-channel model, we compute the contribution to particle conductance by both the fermionic atoms and the bosonic molecules using the Keldysh formalism. Focusing on the regime above the Fermi superfluid transition temperature, we find that the fermionic contribution to the conductance is reduced by interaction compared with the quantized value for the non-interacting case; while the bosonic contribution to the conductance exhibits a plateau with non-universal values that is larger than the quantized conductance. This feature is particularly profound at temperature close to the superfluid transition. We emphasize that the enhanced conductance arises because of the bosonic nature of closed channel molecules and the low-dimensionality of the quantum point contact.

Strongly Interacting p-wave Fermi Gas in Two-Dimensions: Universal Relations and Breathing Mode

The contact is an important concept that characterizes the universal properties of a strongly interacting quantum gas. It appears in both thermodynamic (energy, pressure, etc.) and dynamic quantities (radio-frequency and Bragg spectroscopies, etc.) of the system. Very recently, the concept of contact has been extended to higher partial waves, in particular, the p-wave contacts have been experimentally probed in recent experiment. So far discussions on p-wave contacts have been limited to three-dimensions. In this paper, we generalize the p-wave contacts to two-dimensions and derive a series of universal relations, including the adiabatic relations, high momentum distribution, virial theorem and pressure relation. At high temperature and low density limit, we calculated the p-wave contacts explicitly using virial expansion. A formula which directly connects the shift of the breathing mode frequency and the p-wave contacts are given in a harmonically trapped system. Finally, we also derive the relationships between interaction parameters in three and two dimensional Fermi gas and discuss possible experimental realization of two dimensional Fermi gas with p-wave interactions.

Effective theory and universal relations for Fermi gases near a $d$-wave interaction resonance

In this work, we present an effective field theory to describe a two-component Fermi gas near a $d$-wave interaction resonance. The effective field theory is renormalizable by matching with the low energy $d$-wave scattering phase shift. Based on the effective field theory, we derive universal properties of the Fermi gas by the operator product expansion method. We find that beyond the contacts defined by adiabatic theorems, the asymptotic expressions of the momentum distribution and the Raman spectroscopy involve two extra contacts which provide additional information of correlations of the system. Our formalism sets the stage for further explorations of many-body effects in a $d$-wave resonant Fermi gas. Finally we generalise our effective field theory for interaction resonances of arbitrary higher partial waves.

Normal State Properties of a resonantly interacting p-wave Fermi Gas

Motivated by the recent experimental progresses in the study of p-wave resonant Fermi gas, we investigate the normal state properties of such a gas close to a p-wave scattering resonance. We calculate the universal equation of state and the two p-wave contacts which characterise the universal properties of the system, in good agreement with experiments. Our calculation takes explicit account of the effective range correction and obtains the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ within Nozières-Schmitt-Rink (NSR) scheme, and shows that it lies within experimental reach. We derive analytic expression for $T_c$ in the weak coupling limit and show explicitly the non-perturbative nature of the effective range corrections.

Universal Properties of Fermi Gases in One-dimension

In this Rapid Communication, we investigate the universal properties of a spin-polarized two-component Fermi gas in one dimension (1D) using Bethe ansatz. We discuss the quantum phases and phase transitions by obtaining exact results for the equation of state, the contact, the magnetic susceptibility and the contact susceptibility, giving a precise understanding of the 1D analogue of the Bose-Einstein condensation and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer crossover in three dimension (3D) and the associated universal magnetic properties. In particular, we obtain the exact form of the magnetic susceptibility $χ\sim {1}/{\sqrt{T}}\exp(-Δ/T)$ at low temperatures, where $Δ$ is the energy gap and $T$ is the temperature. Moreover, we establish exact upper and lower bounds for the relation between polarization $P$ and the contact $C$ for both repulsive and attractive Fermi gases. Our findings emphasize the role of the pair fluctuations in strongly interacting 1D fermion systems that can shed light on higher dimensions.

The Realization and Dectection of Weyl Semimetals and Chiral Anomaly in Cold Atomic Systems

In this work, we describe a method to realize 3D Weyl semimetal by coupling multilayers of honeycomb optical lattice in the presence of a pair of Raman lasers. The Raman lasers render each isolated honeycomb layer a Chern insulator. With finite interlayer coupling, the bulk gap of the system closes at certain out-of-plane momenta due to Raman assisted tunnelling and result in the Weyl semimetal phase. Using experimentally relevant parameters, we show that both one and two pairs of Weyl points can be realized by tuning the interlayer coupling strength. We suggest that Landau-Zener tunnelling can be used to detect Weyl points and show that the transition probability increases dramatically when Weyl point emerges. The realization of chiral anomaly by using a magnetic field gradient is also discussed.

Collective Modes in a Two-band Superfluid of Ultracold Alkaline-earth Atoms Close to an Orbital Feshbach Resonance

We discuss the collective modes in an alkaline-earth Fermi gas close to an orbital Feshbach resonance. Unlike the usual Feshbach resonance, the orbital Feshbach resonance in alkaline-earth atoms realizes a two-band superfluid system where the fermionic nature of both the open and the closed channel has to be taken into account. We show that apart from the usual Anderson-Bogoliubov mode which corresponds to the oscillation of total density, there also appears the long-sought Leggett mode corresponding to the oscillation of relative density between the two channels. The existence of the phonon and the Leggett modes and their evolution are discussed in detail. We show how these collective modes are reflected in the density response of the system.

Universal Properties of a Strongly Interacting Fermi Gas at a $p$-wave Resonance

In this letter, we investigate the properties of a strongly interacting spinless Fermi gas close to a $p$-wave resonance. We show that the universal properties at a $p$-wave resonance are captured by two contacts, which are related respectively to the variation of energy with the $p$-wave scattering volume $v$ and with the effective range $R$ in the two adiabatic theorems derived. We show how the two contacts determine the leading and sub-leading asymptotic behavior of the momentum distribution ($\sim 1/k^2$ and $\sim 1/k^4$) and how they can be measured experimentally by radio-frequency, Bragg, and photo-association spectroscopies. Finally, we evaluate the two contacts at high temperature via the virial expansion.

Superfluid Density of a Spin-orbit Coupled Bose Gas

We discuss the superfluid properties of a Bose-Einstein condensed gas with spin-orbit coupling, recently realized in experiments. We find a finite normal fluid density $ρ_n$ at zero temperature which turns out to be a function of the Raman coupling. In particular, the entire fluid becomes normal at the transition point from the zero momentum to the plane wave phase, even though the condensate fraction remains finite. We emphasize the crucial role played by the gapped branch of the elementary excitations and discuss its contributions to various sum rules. Finally, we prove that an independent definition of superfluid density $ρ_s$, using the phase twist method, satisfies the equality $ρ_n+ρ_s=ρ$, the total density, despite the breaking of Galilean invariance.

Evidence for universal relations describing a gas with $p$-wave interactions

Thermodynamics provides powerful constraints on physical and chemical systems in equilibrium. However, non-equilibrium dynamics depends explicitly on microscopic properties, requiring an understanding beyond thermodynamics. Remarkably, in dilute gases, a set of universal relations is known to connect thermodynamics directly with microscopic properties. So far, these "contact" relations have been established only for interactions with $s$-wave symmetry, i.e., without relative angular momentum. We report measurements of two new physical quantities, the "$p$-wave contacts", and present evidence that they encode the universal aspects of $p$-wave interactions through recently proposed relations. Our experiments use an ultracold Fermi gas of $^{40}$K, in which $s$-wave interactions are suppressed by polarising the sample, while $p$-wave interactions are enhanced by working near a scattering resonance. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, we study how correlations in the system develop after "quenching" the atoms into an interacting state. Combining quasi-steady-state measurements with new contact relations, we infer an attractive $p$-wave interaction energy as large as half the Fermi energy. Our results reveal new ways to understand and characterise the properties of a resonant $p$-wave quantum gas.

Evidence for correlated states in a cluster of bosons with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We study the ground state properties of spin-half bosons subjected to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in two dimensions. Due to the enhancement of the low energy density of states, it is expected that the effect of interaction becomes more important. After reviewing several possible ideal condensed states, we carry out an exact diagonalization calculation for a cluster of the bosons in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling on a two-dimensional disk and reveal strong correlations in its ground state. We derive a low-energy effective Hamiltonian to understand how states with strong correlations become energetically more favorable than the ideal condensed states.

Topological Superfluids and BEC-BCS Crossover in Attractive Haldane-Hubbard Model

Motivated by the recent realization of the Haldane model in shaking optical lattice, we investigate the effects of attractive interaction and BEC-BCS crossover in this model at and away from half filling. We show that, contrary to the usual s-wave BEC-BCS crossover in the lattice, a topological superfluid with Chern number C=2 appears in an extended region of phase space for intermediate strength of the attractive interaction in the interaction-density plane. When inversion symmetry is broken, a new gapless topological state is realized. We also investigate the fluctuations in these superfluid phases and show that the Anderson-Bogoliubov mode is quadratic due to time-reversal symmetry breaking and the existence of an undamped Leggett mode in the strong coupling limit.
