Coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics in an ultracold spin-1 mixture

We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by inter-species spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on {\em both} the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts. Our finds are in agreement with theoretical simulations without any fitting parameters.

Evolution of Higgs mode in a Fermion Superfluid with Tunable Interactions

In this letter we present a coherent picture for the evolution of Higgs mode in both neutral and charged $s$-wave fermion superfluids, as the strength of attractive interaction between fermions increases from the BCS to the BEC regime. In the case of neutral fermionic superfluid, such as ultracold fermions, the Higgs mode is pushed to higher energy while at the same time, gradually loses its spectral weight as interaction strength increases toward the BEC regime, because the system is further tuned away from Lorentz invariance. On the other hand, when damping is taken into account, Higgs mode is significantly broadened due to coupling to phase mode in the whole BEC-BCS crossover. In the charged case of electron superconductor, the Anderson-Higgs mechanism gaps out the phase mode and suppresses the coupling between the Higgs and the phase modes, and consequently, stabilizes the Higgs mode.

Spin-orbit Coupling in Optical lattices

In this review, we discuss the physics of spin-orbit coupled quantum gases in optical lattices. After reviewing some relevant experimental techniques, we introduce the basic theoretical model and discuss some of its generic features. In particular, we concentrate on the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and strong interactions and show how it leads to various exotic quantum phases in both the Mott insulating and superfluid regimes. Phase transitions between the Mott and superfluid states are also discussed.

Fluctuation Effects on the Transport Properties of Unitary Fermi Gases

In this letter, we investigate the fluctuation effects on the transport properties of unitary Fermi gases in the vicinity of the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$. Based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism of the BEC-BCS crossover, we investigate both the residual resistivity below $T_c$ induced by phase slips and the paraconductivity above $T_c$ due to pair fluctuations. These two effects have been well studied in the weak coupling BCS superconductor, and here we generalize them to the unitary regime of ultracold Fermi gases. We find that while the residual resistivity below $T_c$ increases as one approaches the unitary limit, consistent with recent experiments, the paraconductivity exhibits non-monotonic behavior. Our results can be verified with the recently developed transport apparatus using mesoscopic channels.

Mott-Superfluid Transition for Spin-Orbit Coupled Bosons in One-Dimensional Optical Lattices

We study the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the Mott-superfluid transition of bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We determine the strong coupling magnetic phase diagram by a combination of exact analytic and numerical means. Smooth evolution of the magnetic structure into the superfluid phases are investigated with the density matrix renormalization group technique. Novel magnetic phases are uncovered and phase transitions between them within the superfluid regime are discussed. Possible experimental detection are discussed.

Quantum Phases and Collective Excitations in Bose-Hubbard Models with Staggered Magnetic Flux

We study the quantum phases of a Bose-Hubbard model with staggered magnetic flux in two dimensions, as has been realized recently [Aidelsburger {\it et al.}, PRL, {\bf 107}, 255301 (2011)]. Within mean field theory, we show how the structure of the condensates evolves from weak to strong coupling limit, exhibiting a tricritical point at the Mott-superfluid transition. Non-trivial topological structures (Dirac points) in the quasi-particle (hole) excitations in the Mott state are found within random phase approximation and we discuss how interaction modifies their structures. Excitation gap in the Mott state closes at different ${\bf k}$ points when approaching the superfluid states, which is consistent with the findings of mean field theory.

Spin-Orbit Coupling Induced Coherent Production of Feshbach Molecules in a Degenerate Fermi Gas

In this work we demonstrate a dynamic process in which SO coupling can coherently produce s-wave Feshbach molecules from a fully polarized Fermi gas, and can induce a coherent oscillation between Feshbach molecules and spin polarized gas. For comparison, we also show that such phenomena are absent if the inter-component coupling is momentum-independent. This demonstrates experimentally that SO coupling does provide finite matrix element between a singlet state and a triplet state, and therefore, implies the bound pairs of a system with SO coupling have triplet p-wave component, which can become topological superfluid by further cooling these pairs to condensation and confining them to lower dimension.

Quantum oscillations in a d-wave vortex liquid

The observation of quantum oscillations in underdoped cuprates has generated intense debate about the nature of the field-induced resistive state and its implications for the `normal state' of high T_c superconductors. Quantum oscillations suggest an underlying Fermi liquid state at high magnetic fields H and low temperatures, in contrast with the high-temperature, zero-field pseudogap state seen in spectroscopy. Recent heat capacity measurements show quantum oscillations together with a large and singular field-dependent suppression of the electronic density of states (DOS), which suggests a resistive state that is affected by the d-wave superconducting gap. We present a theoretical analysis of the electronic excitations in a vortex-liquid state, with short range pairing correlations in space and time, that is able to reconcile these seemingly contradictory observations. We show that phase fluctuations lead to large suppression of the DOS that goes like $\sqrt{H}$ at low fields, in addition to quantum oscillations with a period determined by a Fermi surface reconstructed by a competing order parameter.

Bose Hubbard Models with Synthetic Spin-Orbit Coupling: Mott Insulators, Spin Textures and Superfluidity

Motivated by the experimental realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atoms, we investigate the phase diagram of the Bose Hubbard model in a non-abelian gauge field in two dimensions. Using a strong coupling expansion in the combined presence of spin-orbit coupling and tunable interactions, we find a variety of interesting magnetic Hamiltonians in the Mott insulator (MI), which support magnetic textures such as spin spirals and vortex and Skyrmion crystals. An inhomogeneous mean field treatment shows that the superfluid (SF) phases inherit these exotic magnetic orders from the MI and display, in addition, unusual modulated current patterns. We present a slave boson theory which gives insight into such intertwined spin-charge orders in the SF, and discuss signatures of these orders in Bragg scattering, in situ microscopy, and dynamic quench experiments.

Nature of 3D Bose Gases near Resonance

In this paper, we explore the nature of three-dimensional Bose gases at large positive scattering lengths via resummation of dominating processes involving a minimum number of virtual atoms. We focus on the energetics of the nearly fermionized Bose gases beyond the usual dilute limit. We also find that an onset instability sets in at a critical scattering length, beyond which the near-resonance Bose gases become strongly coupled to molecules and lose the metastability. Near the point of instability, the chemical potential reaches a maximum, and the effect of the three-body forces can be estimated to be around a few percent.

Colliding clouds of strongly interacting spin-polarized fermions

Motivated by a recent experiment at MIT, we consider the collision of two clouds of spin-polarized atomic Fermi gases close to a Feshbach resonance. We explain why two dilute gas clouds, with underlying attractive interactions between their constituents, bounce off each other in the strongly interacting regime. Our hydrodynamic analysis, in excellent agreement with experiment, gives strong evidence for a metastable many-body state with effective repulsive interactions.

BCS-BEC crossover induced by a synthetic non-Abelian gauge field

We investigate the ground state of interacting spin-$\half$ fermions (3D) at a finite density ($ρ\sim \kf^3$) in the presence of a uniform non-Abelian gauge field. The gauge field configuration (GFC) described by a vector $\blam \equiv (λ_x, λ_y, λ_z)$, whose magnitude $λ$ determines the gauge coupling strength, generates a generalized Rashba spin-orbit interaction. For a weak attractive interaction in the singlet channel described by a small negative scattering length $(\kf |\as| \lesssim 1)$, the ground state in the absence of the gauge field ($λ=0$) is a BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) superfluid with large overlapping pairs. With increasing gauge coupling strength, a non-Abelian gauge field engenders a crossover of this BCS ground state to a BEC (Bose-Einstein condensate) ground state of bosons even with a weak attractive interaction that fails to produce a two-body bound state in free vacuum. For large gauge couplings $(λ/\kf \gg 1)$, the BEC attained is a condensate of bosons whose properties are solely determined by the gauge field (and not by the scattering length so long as it is non-zero) -- we call these bosons "rashbons". In the absence of interactions ($\as = 0^-$), the shape of the Fermi surface of the system undergoes a topological transition at a critical gauge coupling $λ_T$. For high symmetry gauge field configurations we show that the crossover from the BCS superfluid to the rashbon BEC occurs in the regime of $λ$ near $λ_T$. In the context of cold atomic systems, this work makes an interesting suggestion of obtaining BCS-BEC crossover through a route other than tuning the interaction between the fermions.

Stability Condition of a Strongly Interacting Boson-Fermion Mixture across an Inter-Species Feshbach Resonance

We study the properties of dilute bosons immersed in a single component Fermi sea across a broad boson-fermion Feshbach resonance. The stability of the mixture requires that the bare interaction between bosons exceeds a critical value, which is a universal function of the boson-fermion scattering length, and exhibits a maximum in the unitary region. We calculate the quantum depletion, momentum distribution and the boson contact parameter across the resonance. The transition from condensate to molecular Fermi gas is also discussed.

Atom Loss Maximum in Ultra-cold Fermi Gases

Recent experiments on atom loss in ultra-cold Fermi gases all show a maximum at a magnetic field below Feshbach resonance, where the s-wave scattering length is large (close to inter-particle distance) and positive. These experiments have been performed over a wide range of conditions, with temperatures and trap depths spanning over three decades. Different groups have come up with different explanations, among them the emergence of Stoner ferromagnetism. Here, we show that this maximum is a consequence of two major steps. The first is the establishment of a population of shallow dimers, which is the combined effect of dimer formation through three-body recombination, and the dissociation of shallow dimers back to atoms through collisions. The dissociation process will be temperature dependent, and is affected by Pauli blocking at low temperatures. The second is the relaxation of shallow dimers into tightly bound dimers through atom-dimer and dimer-dimer collisions. We have constructed a simple set of rate equations describing these processes. Remarkably, even with only a few parameters, these equations reproduce the loss rate observed in all recent experiments, despite their widely different experimental conditions. Our studies show that the location of the maximum loss rate depends crucially on experimental parameters such as trap depth and temperature. These extrinsic characters show that this maximum is not a reliable probe of the nature of the underlying quantum states. The physics of our equations also explains some general trends found in current experiments.

Proposed realization of itinerant ferromagnetism in optical lattices

We propose to realize the itinerant ferromagnetism of two-component cold fermionic atoms in the $p$-orbital bands in optical lattices. The band flatness in the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice dramatically amplifies the interaction effect driving the ferromagnetic transition even with a relatively weak repulsive interaction. This scheme has the advantage that the stability of the system can be maintained without suffering decaying to the molecular state as one approaches the Feshbach resonance from the side with positive scattering length. Experimental signatures and detections are also discussed.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in Non-abelian Gauge Fields

The recent success of the NIST group in generating abelian gauge field in cold atoms has created opportunities to simulate electronic transports in solids using atomic gases. Very recently, the NIST group has also announced in a DARPA Meeting the creation of non-abelian gauge fields in a pseudo spin-1/2 Bose gas. While there have been considerable theoretical activities in synthetic gauge fields, non-abelian fields have not been generated until now. Here, we show that in a non-abelian gauge field, a spinor condensate will develop a spontaneous stripe structure in each spin component, reflecting a ground state made up of two non-orthogonal dressed states with different momenta. Depending on interactions, this ground state can reduce back to a single dressed state. These momentum carrying stripes are the {\em macroscopic} bosonic counterpart of the spin-orbit phenomena in fermions that are being actively studied in electron physics today.

Universal Properties of the Ultra-Cold Fermi Gas

We present some general considerations on the properties of a two-component ultra-cold Fermi gas along the BEC-BCS crossover. It is shown that the interaction energy and the ground state energy can be written in terms of a single dimensionless function $h({ξ,τ})$, where $ξ=-(k_Fa_s)^{-1}$ and $τ=T/T_F$. The function $h(ξ,τ)$ incorporates all the many-body physics and naturally occurs in other physical quantities as well. In particular, we show that the RF-spectroscopy shift $\bar{\dø}(ξ,τ)$ and the molecular fraction $f_c(ξ,τ)$ in the closed channel can be expressed in terms of $h(ξ,τ)$ and thus have identical temperature dependence. The conclusions should have testable consequences in future experiments.
