Magnetic quantum phase transition in Cr-doped Bi2(SexTe1-x)3 driven by the Stark effect

The interplay between magnetism and topology, as exemplified in the magnetic skyrmion systems, has emerged as a rich playground for finding novel quantum phenomena and applications in future information technology. Magnetic topological insulators (TI) have attracted much recent attention, especially after the experimental realization of quantum anomalous Hall effect. Future applications of magnetic TI hinge on the accurate manipulation of magnetism and topology by external perturbations, preferably with a gate electric field. In this work, we investigate the magneto transport properties of Cr doped Bi2(SexTe1-x)3 TI across the topological quantum critical point (QCP). We find that the external gate voltage has negligible effect on the magnetic order for samples far away from the topological QCP. But for the sample near the QCP, we observe a ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition driven by the gate electric field. Theoretical calculations show that a perpendicular electric field causes a shift of electronic energy levels due to the Stark effect, which induces a topological quantum phase transition and consequently a magnetic phase transition. The in situ electrical control of the topological and magnetic properties of TI shed important new lights on future topological electronic or spintronic device applications.

Multiple types of topological fermions in transition metal silicides

Exotic massless fermionic excitations with non-zero Berry flux, other than Dirac and Weyl fermions, could exist in condensed matter systems under the protection of crystalline symmetries, such as spin-1 excitations with 3-fold degeneracy and spin-3/2 Rarita-Schwinger-Weyl fermions. Herein, by using ab initio density functional theory, we show that these unconventional quasiparticles coexist with type-I and type-II Weyl fermions in a family of transition metal silicides, including CoSi, RhSi, RhGe and CoGe, when the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered. Their non-trivial topology results in a series of extensive Fermi arcs connecting projections of these bulk excitations on side surface, which is confirmed by (010) surface electronic spectra of CoSi. In addition, these stable arc states exist within a wide energy window around the Fermi level, which makes them readily accessible in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements.

Weyl Semimetal and Topological Phase Transition in Five Dimensions

We study two Weyl semimetal generalizations in five dimensions (5d) which have Yang monopoles and linked Weyl surfaces in the Brillouin zone, respectively, and carry the second Chern number as a topological number. In particular, we show a Yang monopole naturally reduces to a Hopf link of two Weyl surfaces when the $\mathbf{TP}$ (time-reversal combined with space-inversion) symmetry is broken. We then examine the phase transition between insulators with different topological numbers in 5d. In analogy to the 3d case, 5d Weyl semimetals emerge as intermediate phases during the topological phase transition.

Topological semimetal in honeycomb lattice LnSI

Recognized as elementary particles in the standard model,Weyl fermions in condensed matter have received growing attention. However, most of the previously reportedWeyl semimetals exhibit rather complicated electronic structures that, in turn, may have raised questions regarding the underlying physics. Here, we report for the first time promising topological phases that can be realized in specific honeycomb lattices, including ideal Weyl semimetal structures, 3D strong topological insulators, and nodal-line semimetal configurations. In particular, we highlight a novel semimetal featuring both Weyl nodes and nodal lines. Guided by this model, we demonstrated that GdSI the long perceived ideal Weyl semimetal has two pairs ofWeyl nodes residing at the Fermi level, and that LuSI (YSI) is a 3D strong topological insulator with the right-handed helical surface states. Our work provides a new mechanism to study topological semimetals, and proposes a platform towards exploring the physics of Weyl semimetals as well as related device designs.

Chern-Simons Theory and Wilson Loops in the Brillouin Zone

Berry connection is conventionally defined as a static gauge field in the Brillouin zone. Here we show that for three-dimensional (3d) time-reversal invariant superconductors, a generalized Berry gauge field behaves as a fluctuating field of a Chern-Simons gauge theory. The gapless nodal lines in the momentum space play the role of Wilson loop observables, while their linking and knot invariants modify the gravitational theta angle. This angle induces a topological gravitomagnetoelectric effect where a temperature gradient induces a rotational energy flow. We also show how topological strings may be realized in the 6 dimensional phase space, where the physical space defects play the role of topological D-branes.

Topological superconductivity on the surface of Fe-based superconductors

As one of the simplest systems for realizing Majorana fermions, topological superconductor plays an important role in both condensed matter physics and quantum computations. Based on \emph{ab~initio} calculations and the analysis of an effective 8-band model with the superconducting pairing, we demonstrate that the three dimensional extended $s$-wave Fe-based superconductors such as Fe$_{1+\text{y}}$Se$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ have a metallic topologically nontrivial band structure, and exhibit a normal-topological-normal superconductivity phase transition on the ($001$) surface by tuning the bulk carrier doping level. In the topological superconductivity (TSC) phase, a Majorana zero mode is trapped at the end of a magnetic vortex line. We further show that, the surface TSC phase only exists up to a certain bulk pairing gap, and there is a normal-topological phase transition driven by the temperature, which has not been discussed before. These results pave an effective way to realize the TSC and Majorana fermions in a large class of superconductors.

Generation of Spin Currents by Magnetic Field in $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{P}$-Broken Materials

Pure spin currents carry information in quantum spintronics and could play an essential role in the next generation low-energy-consumption electronics. Here we theoretically predict that the magnetic field can induce a quantum spin current without a concomitant charge current in metals without time reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ but respect the combined $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. It is governed by the magnetic moment of the Bloch states on the Fermi surface, and can be regarded as a spinful generalization of the gyrotropic magnetic effect in $\mathcal{P}$-broken metals. The effect is explicitly studied for a minimal model of an antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetal, where the experimental signature is proposed. We further propose candidate materials, including topological antiferromagnetic Dirac semimetals, Weyl semimetals, and tenary Heusler compounds.

Chiral Majorana edge state in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor structure

After the recognition of the possibility to implement Majorana fermions using the building blocks of solid-state matters, the detection of this peculiar particle has been an intense focus of research. Here we experimentally demonstrate a collection of Majorana fermions living in a one-dimensional transport channel at the boundary of a superconducting quantum anomalous Hall insulator thin film. A series of topological phase changes are controlled by the reversal of the magnetization, where a half-integer quantized conductance plateau (0.5e2/h) is observed as a clear signature of the Majorana phase. This transport signature can be well repeated during many magnetic reversal sweeps, and can be tracked at different temperatures, providing a promising evidence of the chiral Majorana edge modes in the system.

A Five Dimensional Generalization of the Topological Weyl Semimetal

We generalize the concept of three-dimensional topological Weyl semimetal to a class of five dimensional (5D) gapless solids, where Weyl points are generalized to Weyl surfaces which are two-dimensional closed manifolds in the momentum space. Each Weyl surface is characterized by a U(1) second Chern number $C_2$ defined on a four-dimensional manifold enclosing the Weyl surface, which is equal to its topological linking number with other Weyl surfaces in 5D. In analogy to the Weyl semimetals, the surface states of the 5D metal take the form of topologically protected Weyl fermion arcs, which connect the projections of the bulk Weyl surfaces. The further generalization of topological metal in $2n+1$ dimensions carrying the $n$-th Chern number $C_n$ is also discussed.

Experimental Observation of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in a Magnetic Topological Insulator

The quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect has been predicted to occur in magnetic topological insulators, but the experimental realization has been challenging. Here, we report the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3, a magnetic topological insulator. At zero magnetic field, the gate-tuned anomalous Hall resistance reaches the predicted quantized value of h/e^2,accompanied by a considerable drop of the longitudinal resistance. Under a strong magnetic field, the longitudinal resistance vanishes whereas the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. The realization of the QAH effect may lead to the development of low-power-consumption electronics.

Ideal Weyl semimetals in the chalcopyrites CuTlSe2, AgTlTe2, AuTlTe2 and ZnPbAs2

Weyl semimetals are new states of matter which feature novel Fermi arcs and exotic transport phenomena. Based on first-principles calculations, we report that the chalcopyrites CuTlSe2, AgTlTe2, AuTlTe2 and ZnPbAs2 are ideal Weyl semimetals, having largely separated Weyl points (~ 0.05/A) and uncovered Fermi arcs that are amenable to experimental detections. We also construct a minimal effective model to capture the low-energy physics of this class of Weyl semimetals. Our discovery is a major step toward a perfect playground of intriguing Weyl semimetals and potential applications for low-power and high-speed electronics.

Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic Semimetal

The analogues of elementary particles have been extensively searched for in condensed matter systems because of both scientific interests and technological applications. Recently massless Dirac fermions were found to emerge as low energy excitations in the materials named Dirac semimetals. All the currently known Dirac semimetals are nonmagnetic with both time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$. Here we show that Dirac fermions can exist in one type of antiferromagnetic systems, where $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{P}$ are broken but their combination $\mathcal{PT}$ is respected. We propose orthorhombic antiferromagnet CuMnAs as a candidate, analyze the robustness of the Dirac points with symmetry protections, and demonstrate its distinctive bulk dispersions as well as the corresponding surface states by \emph{ab initio} calculations. Our results give a new route towards the realization of Dirac materials, and provide a possible platform to study the interplay of Dirac fermion physics and magnetism.

Edge State Induced Andreev Oscillation in Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator-Superconductor Junctions

We study the quantum Andreev oscillation induced by interference of the edge chiral Majorana fermions in junctions made of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and superconductors (SCs). We show two chiral Majorana fermions on a QAH edge with SC proximity generically have a momentum difference $Δk$, which depends on the chemical potentials of both the QAH insulator and the SC. Due to the spatial interference induced by $Δk$, the longitudinal conductance of QAH-SC junctions oscillates with respect to the edge lengths and the chemical potentials, which can be probed via charge transport. Furthermore, we show the dynamical SC phase fluctuation will give rise to a geometrical correction to the longitudinal conductance of the junctions.

Symmetry-protected ideal Weyl semimetal in HgTe-class materials

Ideal Weyl semimetals with all Weyl nodes exactly at the Fermi level and no coexisting trivial Fermi surfaces in the bulk, similar to graphene, could feature deep physics such as exotic transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly. Here, we show that HgTe and half-Heusler compounds, under a broad range of in-plane compressive strain, could be materials in nature realizing ideal Weyl semimetals with four pairs of Weyl nodes and topological surface Fermi arcs. Generically, we find that the HgTe-class materials with nontrivial band inversion and noncentrosymmetry provide a promising arena to realize ideal Weyl semimetals. Such ideal Weyl semimetals could further provide a unique platform to study emergent phenomena such as the interplay between ideal Weyl fermions and superconductivity in the half-Heusler compound LaPtBi.

Stable Dirac semi-metal in the allotrope of IV elements

Three dimensional topological Dirac semi-metals represent a novel state of quantum matter with exotic electronic properties, in which a pair of Dirac points with the linear dispersion along all momentum directions exist in the bulk. Herein, by using the first principles calculations, we discover a new metastable allotrope of Ge and Sn in the staggered layered dumbbell structure, named as germancite and stancite, to be Dirac semi-metals with a pair of Dirac points on its rotation axis. On the surface parallel to the rotation axis, a pair of topologically non-trivial Fermi arcs are observed and a Lifshitz transition is found by tuning the Fermi level. Furthermore, the quantum thin film of germancite is found to be an intrinsic quantum spin Hall insulator. These discoveries suggest novel physical properties and future applications of the new metastable allotrope of Ge and Sn.

Resonant magneto-optic Kerr effect in the magnetic topological insulator Cr:(Sb$_x$,Bi$_{1-x}$)$_2$Te$_3$

We report measurements of the polar Kerr effect, proportional to the out-of-plane component of the magnetization, in thin films of the magnetically doped topological insulator $(\text{Cr}_{0.12}\text{Bi}_{0.26}\text{Sb}_{0.62})_2\text{Te}_3$. Measurements of the complex Kerr angle, $Θ_K$, were performed as a function of photon energy in the range $0.8\text{ eV}<\hbarω<3.0\text{ eV}$. We observed a peak in the real part of $Θ_K(ω)$ and zero crossing in the imaginary part that we attribute to resonant interaction with a spin-orbit avoided crossing located $\approx$ 1.6 eV above the Fermi energy. The resonant enhancement allows measurement of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of $Θ_K$ in the ultrathin film limit, $d\geq2$ quintuple layers. We find a sharp transition to zero remanent magnetization at 6 K for $d<8$~QL, consistent with theories of the dependence of impurity spin interactions on film thickness and their location relative to topological insulator surfaces.

Dynamical Axion Field in a Magnetic Topological Insulator Superlattice

We propose that the dynamical axion field can be realized in a magnetic topological insulator superlattice or a topological paramagnetic insulator. The magnetic fluctuations of these systems produce a pseudoscalar field which has an axionic coupling to the electromagnetic field, and thus it gives a condensed-matter realization of the axion electrodynamics. Compared to the previously proposed dynamical axion materials where a long range antiferromagnetic order is required, the systems proposed here have the advantage that only a uniform magnetization or a paramagnetic state is needed for the dynamic axion. We further propose several experiments to detect such a dynamical axion field.

Intrinsic Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in the Kagome Lattice Cs2LiMn3F12

In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight binding model based on the in-plane ddσantibonding states is constructed to understand the topological band structures of the system.
