Stringy $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ holography for AdS${_3}$

We propose a class of ${\rm AdS}_3/{\rm CFT}_2$ dualities with $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry. These dualities relate string theory on ${\rm AdS}_3 \times ({\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4)/{\rm G}$ to marginal deformations of the symmetric product orbifold of $\mathbb{T}^4/{\rm G}$, where ${\rm G}$ is a dihedral group. We demonstrate that the BPS spectrum calculated from supergravity and string theory agrees with that of the dual CFT. Moreover, the supergravity elliptic genus is shown to reproduce the CFT answer, thus providing further non-trivial evidence in favour of the proposal.

Sphere partition functions and cut-off AdS

We consider sphere partition functions of TT deformed large N conformal field theories in d=2,3,4,5 and 6 dimensions, computed using the flow equation. These are shown to non-perturbatively match with bulk computations of $AdS_{d+1}$ with a finite radial cut-off. We then demonstrate how the flow equation can be independently derived from a regularization procedure in defining TT operators through a local Callan-Symanzik equation. Finally, we show that the sphere partition functions, modulo bulk-counterterm contributions, can be reproduced from Wheeler-DeWitt wave functions.

Modular covariance and uniqueness of $J\bar{T}$ deformed CFTs

We study families of two dimensional quantum field theories, labeled by a dimensionful parameter $μ$, that contain a holomorphic conserved $U(1)$ current $J(z)$. We assume that these theories can be consistently defined on a torus, so their partition sum, with a chemical potential for the charge that couples to $J$, is modular covariant. We further require that in these theories, the energy of a state at finite $μ$ is a function only of $μ$, and of the energy, momentum and charge of the corresponding state at $μ=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under these conditions, the torus partition sum of the theory at $μ=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to all orders in $μ$, to be that of a $μJ\bar T$ deformed conformal field theory (CFT). We derive a flow equation for the $J\bar{T}$ deformed partition sum, and use it to study non-perturbative effects. We find non-perturbative ambiguities for any non-zero value of $μ$, and comment on their possible relations to holography.

Modular invariance and uniqueness of $T\bar{T}$ deformed CFT

Any two dimensional quantum field theory that can be consistently defined on a torus is invariant under modular transformations. In this paper we study families of quantum field theories labeled by a dimensionful parameter $t$, that have the additional property that the energy of a state at finite $t$ is a function only of $t$ and of the energy and momentum of the corresponding state at $t=0$, where the theory becomes conformal. We show that under this requirement, the partition sum of the theory at $t=0$ uniquely determines the partition sum (and thus the spectrum) of the perturbed theory, to all orders in $t$, to be that of a $T\bar T$ deformed CFT. Non-perturbatively, we find that for one sign of $t$ (for which the energies are real) the partition sum is uniquely determined, while for the other sign we find non-perturbative ambiguities. We characterize these ambiguities and comment on their possible relations to holography.

Modular crossings, OPE coefficients and black holes

In (1+1)-d CFTs, the 4-point function on the plane can be mapped to the pillow geometry and thereby crossing symmetry gets translated into a modular property. We use these modular features to derive a universal asymptotic formula for OPE coefficients in which one of the operators is averaged over heavy primaries. The coarse-grained heavy channel then reproduces features of the gravitational 2-to-2 S-matrix which has black holes as their intermediate states.

$T\bar{T}$ deformed partition functions

We demonstrate the presence of modular properties in partition functions of $T\bar{T}$ deformed conformal field theories. These properties are verified explicitly for the deformed free boson. The modular features facilitate a derivation of the asymptotic density of states in these theories, which turns out to interpolate between Cardy and Hagedorn behaviours. We also point out a sub-sector of the spectrum that remains undeformed under the $T\bar{T}$ flow. Finally, we comment on the deformation of the CFT vacuum character and its implications for the holographic dual.

Nature of magnetism and transport in BxCyNz thin films: The intriguing role of nitrogen defects in the electronic structure

Boron carbonitride (BxCyNz) represents an interesting family of materials containing all light elements and two dimensional graphene like hybrid layers. Although rich literature exists on this peculiar material in chemically processed form, there are relatively fewer reports on device application-worthy thin film form. This form also offers a natural platform for basic studies on important aspects such as magnetism and transport, which have attracted attention in the context of ferromagnetism in doped and defect carbon systems. Thus, in this work we have grown thin films of this compound using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) method, and investigated their magnetic and transport properties in their entirety along with the detailed electronic structure using various spectroscopic techniques like X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Valence Band Spectroscopy (VBS) and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES). In depth analysis of the typical role of dopants and defects, especially the prevalent nitrogen defects, is elucidated using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to understand the experimental observations. A dramatic crossover in the transport mechanism of charge carriers is observed in this system with the change in doping level of specific nitrogen defects. A robust and high saturation magnetization is achieved in BCN films which is higher by almost hundred times as compared to that in similarly grown undoped carbon film. An anomalous transition and increase in coercive field is also observed at low temperature. A careful analysis brings out the intriguing role of specific nitrogen defects in defining the peculiar nature and concentration dependence of the physical properties of this system.

Probing thermality beyond the diagonal

We investigate the off-diagonal sector of eigenstate thermalization using both local and non-local probes in 2-dimensional conformal field theories. A novel analysis of the asymptotics of OPE coefficients via the modular bootstrap is performed to extract the behaviour of the off-diagonal matrix elements. We also probe this sector using semi-classical heavy-light Virasoro blocks. The results demonstrate signatures of thermality and confirms the entropic suppression of the off-diagonal elements as necessitated by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.

Experimental evidences of trions and Fermi edge singularity in single barrier GaAs/AlAs/GaAs heterostructure using photocapacitance spectroscopy

In this paper, we show how photocapacitance spectra can probe two dimensional excitonic complexes and Fermi edge singularity as a function of applied bias around 100 K. In lower density regimes (<1x1011cm^-2), the appearance of two distinct peaks in the spectra are identified as a signature of coexistence of both excitons and positively charged trions. We estimate the binding energy of these trions as ~2.0 meV. In the higher density regimes (>1x10^11 cm^-2), we observe a sharp spectral transition from trions to asymmetric shaped Fermi edge singularity in the photocapacitance spectra around a particular reverse bias. However, these signatures are absent from the photoluminescence spectra measured under identical circumstances. Such dissimilarities clearly point out that different many body physics govern these two spectral measurements. We also argue why such quantum confined dipoles of spatially indirect trions can have thermodynamically finite probability to survive even around 100 K. Finally, our observations demonstrate that photocapacitance technique, which was seldom used to detect trions in the past, can also be useful to detect the traces of these spatially indirect excitonic complexes as well as Fermi edge singularity even at 100 K. This is mainly due to enhanced sensitivity of such dielectric measurements to dipolar changes within such heterojunction.

Experimental evidences of quantum confined 2D indirect excitons in single barrier GaAs/AlAs/GaAs heterostructure using photocapacitance at room temperature

We investigated excitonic absorptions in GaAs/AlAs/GaAs single barrier heterostructure using both photocapacitance and photocurrent spectroscopies at room temperature. Photocapacitance spectra show well defined resonance peak of indirect excitons formed around the Gamma-AlAs barrier. Unlike DC-photocurrent spectra, frequency dependent photocapacitance spectra interestingly red shift, sharpen up and then decrease with increasing tunneling at higher biases. Such dissimilarities clearly point out that different exciton dynamics govern these two spectral measurements. We also argue why such quantum confined dipoles of indirect excitons can have thermodynamically finite probabilities to survive even at room temperature. Finally, our observations demonstrate that photocapacitance technique, which was seldom used to detect excitons in the past, is useful for selective detection and experimental tuning of relatively small numbers (~10^11/cm2) of photo-generated indirect excitons having large effective dipole moments in this type of quasi-two dimensional heterostructures.

Charged structure constants from modularity

We derive a universal formula for the average heavy-heavy-light structure constants for 2d CFTs with non-vanishing u(1) charge. The derivation utilizes the modular properties of one-point functions on the torus. Refinements in N=2 SCFTs, show that the resulting Cardy-like formula for the structure constants has precisely the same shifts in the central charge as that of the thermodynamic entropy found earlier. This analysis generalizes the recent results by Kraus and Maloney for CFTs with an additional global u(1) symmetry. Our results at large central charge are also shown to match with computations from the holographic dual, which suggest that the averaged CFT three-point coefficient also serves as an useful probe of detecting black hole hair.

Monstrous entanglement

The Monster CFT plays an important role in moonshine and is also conjectured to be the holographic dual to pure gravity in AdS3. We investigate the entanglement and Renyi entropies of this theory along with other extremal CFTs. The Renyi entropies of a single interval on the torus are evaluated using the short interval expansion. Each order in the expansion contains closed form expressions of the modular parameter. The leading terms in the q-series are shown to precisely agree with the universal corrections to Renyi entropies at low temperatures. Furthermore, these results are shown to match with bulk computations of Renyi entropy using the one-loop partition function on handlebodies. We also explore some features of Renyi entropies of two intervals on the plane.

On thermality of CFT eigenstates

The Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) provides a way to understand how an isolated quantum mechanical system can be approximated by a thermal density matrix. We find a class of operators in (1+1)-$d$ conformal field theories, consisting of quasi-primaries of the identity module, which satisfy the hypothesis only at the leading order in large central charge. In the context of subsystem ETH, this plays a role in the deviation of the reduced density matrices, corresponding to a finite energy density eigenstate from its hypothesized thermal approximation. The universal deviation in terms of the square of the trace-square distance goes as the 8th power of the subsystem fraction and is suppressed by powers of inverse central charge ($c$). Furthermore, the non-universal deviations from subsystem ETH are found to be proportional to the heavy-light-heavy structure constants which are typically exponentially suppressed in $\sqrt{h/c}$, where $h$ is the conformal scaling dimension of the finite energy density state. We also examine the effects of the leading finite size corrections.

Negative activation energy and dielectric signatures of excitons and excitonic Mott transitions in quantum confined laser structures

Mostly, optical spectroscopies are used to investigate the physics of excitons, whereas their electrical evidences are hardly explored. Here, we examined a forward bias activated differential capacitance response of GaInP-AlGaInP based multi-quantum well laser diodes to trace the presence of excitons using electrical measurements. Occurrence of negative activation energy after light emission is understood as thermodynamical signature of steady state excitonic population under intermediate range of carrier injections. Similar corroborative results are also observed in an InGaAs-GaAs quantum dot laser structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. With increasing biases, the measured differential capacitance response slowly vanishes. This represents gradual Mott transition of an excitonic phase into an electron-hole plasma in a GaInP-AlGaInP laser diode. This is further substantiated by more and more exponentially looking shapes of high energy tails in electroluminescence spectra with increasing forward bias, which originates from a growing non-degenerate population of free electrons and holes. Such an experimental correlation between electrical and optical properties of excitons can be used to advance the next generation excitonic devices.

Twisted sectors from plane partitions

Twisted sectors arise naturally in the bosonic higher spin CFTs at their free points, as well as in the associated symmetric orbifolds. We identify the coset representations of the twisted sector states using the description of W_\infty representations in terms of plane partitions. We confirm these proposals by a microscopic null-vector analysis, and by matching the excitation spectrum of these representations with the orbifold prediction.

Higher-point conformal blocks and entanglement entropy in heavy states

We consider conformal blocks of two heavy operators and an arbitrary number of light operators in a (1+1)-d CFT with large central charge. Using the monodromy method, these higher-point conformal blocks are shown to factorize into products of 4-point conformal blocks in the heavy-light limit for a class of OPE channels. This result is reproduced by considering suitable worldline configurations in the bulk conical defect geometry. We apply the CFT results to calculate the entanglement entropy of an arbitrary number of disjoint intervals for heavy states. The corresponding holographic entanglement entropy calculated via the minimal area prescription precisely matches these results from CFT. Along the way, we briefly illustrate the relation of these conformal blocks to Riemann surfaces and their associated moduli space.

Heterotic string on the CHL orbifold of K3

We study ${\cal N}=2$ compactifications of heterotic string theory on the CHL orbifold $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ with $N= 2, 3, 5, 7$. $\mathbb{Z}_N$ acts as an involution on $K3$ together with a shift of $1/N$ along one of the circles of $T^2$. These compactifications generalize the example of the heterotic string on $K3\times T^2$ studied in the context of dualities in ${\cal N}=2$ string theories. We evaluate the new supersymmetric index for these theories and show that their expansion can written in terms of the McKay-Thompson series associated with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ involution embedded in the Mathieu group $M_{24}$. We then evaluate the difference in one-loop threshold corrections to the non-Abelian gauge couplings with Wilson lines and show that their moduli dependence is captured by Siegel modular forms related to dyon partition functions of ${\cal N}=4$ string theories.

Universal features of left-right entanglement entropy

We show the presence of universal features in the entanglement entropy of regularized boundary states for (1+1)-d conformal field theories on a circle when the reduced density matrix is obtained by tracing over right/left-moving modes. We derive a general formula for the left-right entanglement entropy in terms of the central charge and the modular S matrix of the theory. When the state is chosen to be an Ishibashi state, this measure of entanglement is shown to reproduce the spatial entanglement entropy of a (2+1)-d topological quantum field theory. We explicitly evaluate the left-right entanglement entropies for the Ising model, the tricritical Ising model and the su(2)_k WZW model as examples.
