DeformToon3D: Deformable 3D Toonification from Neural Radiance Fields

In this paper, we address the challenging problem of 3D toonification, which involves transferring the style of an artistic domain onto a target 3D face with stylized geometry and texture. Although fine-tuning a pre-trained 3D GAN on the artistic domain can produce reasonable performance, this strategy has limitations in the 3D domain. In particular, fine-tuning can deteriorate the original GAN latent space, which affects subsequent semantic editing, and requires independent optimization and storage for each new style, limiting flexibility and efficient deployment. To overcome these challenges, we propose DeformToon3D, an effective toonification framework tailored for hierarchical 3D GAN. Our approach decomposes 3D toonification into subproblems of geometry and texture stylization to better preserve the original latent space. Specifically, we devise a novel StyleField that predicts conditional 3D deformation to align a real-space NeRF to the style space for geometry stylization. Thanks to the StyleField formulation, which already handles geometry stylization well, texture stylization can be achieved conveniently via adaptive style mixing that injects information of the artistic domain into the decoder of the pre-trained 3D GAN. Due to the unique design, our method enables flexible style degree control and shape-texture-specific style swap. Furthermore, we achieve efficient training without any real-world 2D-3D training pairs but proxy samples synthesized from off-the-shelf 2D toonification models.

Hard superconducting gap in PbTe nanowires

Semiconductor nanowires coupled to a superconductor provide a powerful testbed for quantum device physics such as Majorana zero modes and gate-tunable hybrid qubits. The performance of these quantum devices heavily relies on the quality of the induced superconducting gap. A hard gap, evident as vanishing subgap conductance in tunneling spectroscopy, is both necessary and desired. Previously, a hard gap has been achieved and extensively studied in III-V semiconductor nanowires (InAs and InSb). In this study, we present the observation of a hard superconducting gap in PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor Pb. The gap size ($Δ$) is $\sim$ 1 meV (maximally 1.3 meV in one device). Additionally, subgap Andreev bound states can also be created and controlled through gate tuning. Tuning a device into the open regime can reveal Andreev enhancement of the subgap conductance, suggesting a remarkable transparent superconductor-semiconductor interface, with a transparency of $\sim$ 0.96. These results pave the way for diverse superconducting quantum devices based on PbTe nanowires.

Scenimefy: Learning to Craft Anime Scene via Semi-Supervised Image-to-Image Translation

Automatic high-quality rendering of anime scenes from complex real-world images is of significant practical value. The challenges of this task lie in the complexity of the scenes, the unique features of anime style, and the lack of high-quality datasets to bridge the domain gap. Despite promising attempts, previous efforts are still incompetent in achieving satisfactory results with consistent semantic preservation, evident stylization, and fine details. In this study, we propose Scenimefy, a novel semi-supervised image-to-image translation framework that addresses these challenges. Our approach guides the learning with structure-consistent pseudo paired data, simplifying the pure unsupervised setting. The pseudo data are derived uniquely from a semantic-constrained StyleGAN leveraging rich model priors like CLIP. We further apply segmentation-guided data selection to obtain high-quality pseudo supervision. A patch-wise contrastive style loss is introduced to improve stylization and fine details. Besides, we contribute a high-resolution anime scene dataset to facilitate future research. Our extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art baselines in terms of both perceptual quality and quantitative performance.

StyleGANEX: StyleGAN-Based Manipulation Beyond Cropped Aligned Faces

Recent advances in face manipulation using StyleGAN have produced impressive results. However, StyleGAN is inherently limited to cropped aligned faces at a fixed image resolution it is pre-trained on. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective solution to this limitation by using dilated convolutions to rescale the receptive fields of shallow layers in StyleGAN, without altering any model parameters. This allows fixed-size small features at shallow layers to be extended into larger ones that can accommodate variable resolutions, making them more robust in characterizing unaligned faces. To enable real face inversion and manipulation, we introduce a corresponding encoder that provides the first-layer feature of the extended StyleGAN in addition to the latent style code. We validate the effectiveness of our method using unaligned face inputs of various resolutions in a diverse set of face manipulation tasks, including facial attribute editing, super-resolution, sketch/mask-to-face translation, and face toonification.

Not All Steps are Created Equal: Selective Diffusion Distillation for Image Manipulation

Conditional diffusion models have demonstrated impressive performance in image manipulation tasks. The general pipeline involves adding noise to the image and then denoising it. However, this method faces a trade-off problem: adding too much noise affects the fidelity of the image while adding too little affects its editability. This largely limits their practical applicability. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, Selective Diffusion Distillation (SDD), that ensures both the fidelity and editability of images. Instead of directly editing images with a diffusion model, we train a feedforward image manipulation network under the guidance of the diffusion model. Besides, we propose an effective indicator to select the semantic-related timestep to obtain the correct semantic guidance from the diffusion model. This approach successfully avoids the dilemma caused by the diffusion process. Our extensive experiments demonstrate the advantages of our framework. Code is released at https://github.com/AndysonYs/Selective-Diffusion-Distillation.

GP-UNIT: Generative Prior for Versatile Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation

Recent advances in deep learning have witnessed many successful unsupervised image-to-image translation models that learn correspondences between two visual domains without paired data. However, it is still a great challenge to build robust mappings between various domains especially for those with drastic visual discrepancies. In this paper, we introduce a novel versatile framework, Generative Prior-guided UNsupervised Image-to-image Translation (GP-UNIT), that improves the quality, applicability and controllability of the existing translation models. The key idea of GP-UNIT is to distill the generative prior from pre-trained class-conditional GANs to build coarse-level cross-domain correspondences, and to apply the learned prior to adversarial translations to excavate fine-level correspondences. With the learned multi-level content correspondences, GP-UNIT is able to perform valid translations between both close domains and distant domains. For close domains, GP-UNIT can be conditioned on a parameter to determine the intensity of the content correspondences during translation, allowing users to balance between content and style consistency. For distant domains, semi-supervised learning is explored to guide GP-UNIT to discover accurate semantic correspondences that are hard to learn solely from the appearance. We validate the superiority of GP-UNIT over state-of-the-art translation models in robust, high-quality and diversified translations between various domains through extensive experiments.

Graph Exploration Matters: Improving both individual-level and system-level diversity in WeChat Feed Recommender

There are roughly three stages in real industrial recommendation systems, candidates generation (retrieval), ranking and reranking. Individual-level diversity and system-level diversity are both important for industrial recommender systems. The former focus on each single user's experience, while the latter focus on the difference among users. Graph-based retrieval strategies are inevitably hijacked by heavy users and popular items, leading to the convergence of candidates for users and the lack of system-level diversity. Meanwhile, in the reranking phase, Determinantal Point Process (DPP) is deployed to increase individual-level diverisity. Heavily relying on the semantic information of items, DPP suffers from clickbait and inaccurate attributes. Besides, most studies only focus on one of the two levels of diversity, and ignore the mutual influence among different stages in real recommender systems. We argue that individual-level diversity and system-level diversity should be viewed as an integrated problem, and we provide an efficient and deployable solution for web-scale recommenders. Generally, we propose to employ the retrieval graph information in diversity-based reranking, by which to weaken the hidden similarity of items exposed to users, and consequently gain more graph explorations to improve the system-level diveristy. Besides, we argue that users' propensity for diversity changes over time in content feed recommendation. Therefore, with the explored graph, we also propose to capture the user's real-time personalized propensity to the diversity. We implement and deploy the combined system in WeChat App's Top Stories used by hundreds of millions of users. Offline simulations and online A/B tests show our solution can effectively improve both user engagement and system revenue.

Conductance Quantization in PbTe Nanowires

PbTe nanowires coupled to a superconductor have recently been proposed as a potential Majorana platform. The hallmark of the one-dimensional nature of ballistic nanowires is their quantized conductance. Here, we report the observation of conductance plateaus at multiples of the quantized value $2e^2/h$ in PbTe nanowires at finite magnetic fields. The quantized plateaus, as a function of source-drain bias and magnetic field, allow for the extraction of the Landé $g$-factor, sub-band spacing and effective mass. The coefficient of 2 in the plateau conductance indicates the presence of valley degeneracy arising from the crystal orientation of the nanowires, which are grown on a (001) substrate. Occasionally, this degeneracy can be lifted by a gate voltage that breaks the mirror symmetry. Our results demonstrate the one-dimensionality of PbTe nanowires and fulfill one of the necessary conditions for the realization of Majorana zero modes.

Text2Performer: Text-Driven Human Video Generation

Text-driven content creation has evolved to be a transformative technique that revolutionizes creativity. Here we study the task of text-driven human video generation, where a video sequence is synthesized from texts describing the appearance and motions of a target performer. Compared to general text-driven video generation, human-centric video generation requires maintaining the appearance of synthesized human while performing complex motions. In this work, we present Text2Performer to generate vivid human videos with articulated motions from texts. Text2Performer has two novel designs: 1) decomposed human representation and 2) diffusion-based motion sampler. First, we decompose the VQVAE latent space into human appearance and pose representation in an unsupervised manner by utilizing the nature of human videos. In this way, the appearance is well maintained along the generated frames. Then, we propose continuous VQ-diffuser to sample a sequence of pose embeddings. Unlike existing VQ-based methods that operate in the discrete space, continuous VQ-diffuser directly outputs the continuous pose embeddings for better motion modeling. Finally, motion-aware masking strategy is designed to mask the pose embeddings spatial-temporally to enhance the temporal coherence. Moreover, to facilitate the task of text-driven human video generation, we contribute a Fashion-Text2Video dataset with manually annotated action labels and text descriptions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Text2Performer generates high-quality human videos (up to 512x256 resolution) with diverse appearances and flexible motions.

MGTAB: A Multi-Relational Graph-Based Twitter Account Detection Benchmark

The development of social media user stance detection and bot detection methods rely heavily on large-scale and high-quality benchmarks. However, in addition to low annotation quality, existing benchmarks generally have incomplete user relationships, suppressing graph-based account detection research. To address these issues, we propose a Multi-Relational Graph-Based Twitter Account Detection Benchmark (MGTAB), the first standardized graph-based benchmark for account detection. To our knowledge, MGTAB was built based on the largest original data in the field, with over 1.55 million users and 130 million tweets. MGTAB contains 10,199 expert-annotated users and 7 types of relationships, ensuring high-quality annotation and diversified relations. In MGTAB, we extracted the 20 user property features with the greatest information gain and user tweet features as the user features. In addition, we performed a thorough evaluation of MGTAB and other public datasets. Our experiments found that graph-based approaches are generally more effective than feature-based approaches and perform better when introducing multiple relations. By analyzing experiment results, we identify effective approaches for account detection and provide potential future research directions in this field. Our benchmark and standardized evaluation procedures are freely available at: https://github.com/GraphDetec/MGTAB.

An Evaluation System for DeFi Lending Protocols

With the development of decentralized finance (DeFi), lending protocols have been increasingly proposed in the market. A comprehensive and in-depth evaluation of lending protocol is essential to the DeFi market participants. Due to the short development time of DeFi, the current evaluation is limited to the single evaluation indicator, such as total locked value (TVL). To our knowledge, we are the first to study the evaluation model for DeFi lending protocol. In this paper, we build a four-layer lending protocol evaluation model based on Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The model contains three first-level indicators and ten second-level indicators, covering various aspects of the performance of lending protocol. We calculated these indicators by obtaining on-chain and off-chain data of lending protocol. Then we evaluated and ranked six mainstream lending protocols utilizing the proposed model during the period 2021/8/20-2022/11/10. Through comparative analysis of evaluation result, we found that the violent decline in the price of ETH increase the market share of stablecoin in the lending protocols. In addition, we also revealed the reasons for various fluctuations.

Asymptotically Optimal Circuit Depth for Quantum State Preparation and General Unitary Synthesis

The Quantum State Preparation problem aims to prepare an $n$-qubit quantum state $|ψ_v\rangle =\sum_{k=0}^{2^n-1}v_k|k\rangle$ from the initial state $|0\rangle^{\otimes n}$, for a given unit vector $v=(v_0,v_1,v_2,\ldots,v_{2^n-1})^T\in \mathbb{C}^{2^n}$ with $\|v\|_2 = 1$. The problem is of fundamental importance in quantum algorithm design, Hamiltonian simulation and quantum machine learning, yet its circuit depth and size complexity remain open when ancillary qubits are available. In this paper, we study efficient constructions of quantum circuits with $m$ ancillary qubits that can prepare $|ψ_v\rangle$ in depth $\tilde O\left(\frac{2^n}{m+n}+n\right)$and size $O(2^n)$, achieving the optimal value for both measures simultaneously. These results also imply a depth complexity of $Θ(4^n/(m+n))$ for quantum circuits implementing a general $n$-qubit unitary using $m = O(2^n/n)$ ancillary qubits. This resolves the depth complexity for circuits without ancillary qubits, and for circuits with exponentially many ancillary qubits, this gives a quadratic saving from $O(4^n)$ to $\tilde Θ(2^n)$. Our circuits are deterministic, prepare the state and carry out the unitary precisely, utilize the ancillary qubits tightly and the depths are optimal in a wide range of parameter regime. The results can be viewed as (optimal) time-space tradeoff bounds, which is not only theoretically interesting, but also practically relevant in the current trend that the number of qubits starts to take off, by showing a way to use a large number of qubits to compensate the short qubit lifetime.

Optimization of CNOT circuits on limited connectivity architecture

A CNOT circuit is the key gadget for entangling qubits in quantum computing systems. However, the qubit connectivity of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices is constrained by their {limited connectivity architecture}. To improve the performance of CNOT circuits on NISQ devices, we investigate the optimization of the size/depth of CNOT circuits under the limited connectivity architecture. We present a method that can optimize the size of any $n$-qubit CNOT circuit $O\left(\frac{n^2}{\log δ}\right)$ on any connected graph with minimum degree $δ$, and prove this bound is optimal for the regular graph. For the near-term sparsely connected structure, we additionally present a method that can optimize the size of any $n$-qubit CNOT circuit to below $2n^2$. The numerical experiment shows that our method performs better than state-of-the-art results. Specifically, we present an example to illustrate the applicability of our algorithm. For the grid structure, which is commonly used in current quantum devices, we demonstrate that the depth of any $n$-qubit CNOT circuit can be optimized to be linear in $n$ with certain ancillary qubits (ancillas). Experimental results indicate that this method has significant improvements compared with all of the existing methods. We additionally test our algorithms on the five-qubit IBMQ devices, and the experiments show that the measurement results of the optimized circuit with our algorithm are more robust to noise compared with the IBM mapping method.

Learning to Rank Normalized Entropy Curves with Differentiable Window Transformation

Recent automated machine learning systems often use learning curves ranking models to inform decisions about when to stop unpromising trials and identify better model configurations. In this paper, we present a novel learning curve ranking model specifically tailored for ranking normalized entropy (NE) learning curves, which are commonly used in online advertising and recommendation systems. Our proposed model, self-Adaptive Curve Transformation augmented Relative curve Ranking (ACTR2), features an adaptive curve transformation layer that transforms raw lifetime NE curves into composite window NE curves with the window sizes adaptively optimized based on both the position on the learning curve and the curve's dynamics. We also introduce a novel differentiable indexing method for the proposed adaptive curve transformation, which allows gradients with respect to the discrete indices to flow freely through the curve transformation layer, enabling the learned window sizes to be updated flexibly during training. Additionally, we propose a pairwise curve ranking architecture that directly models the difference between the two learning curves and is better at capturing subtle changes in relative performance that may not be evident when modeling each curve individually as the existing approaches did. Our extensive experiments on a real-world NE curve dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of each key component of ACTR2 and its improved performance over the state-of-the-art.

Self-Supervised Geometry-Aware Encoder for Style-Based 3D GAN Inversion

StyleGAN has achieved great progress in 2D face reconstruction and semantic editing via image inversion and latent editing. While studies over extending 2D StyleGAN to 3D faces have emerged, a corresponding generic 3D GAN inversion framework is still missing, limiting the applications of 3D face reconstruction and semantic editing. In this paper, we study the challenging problem of 3D GAN inversion where a latent code is predicted given a single face image to faithfully recover its 3D shapes and detailed textures. The problem is ill-posed: innumerable compositions of shape and texture could be rendered to the current image. Furthermore, with the limited capacity of a global latent code, 2D inversion methods cannot preserve faithful shape and texture at the same time when applied to 3D models. To solve this problem, we devise an effective self-training scheme to constrain the learning of inversion. The learning is done efficiently without any real-world 2D-3D training pairs but proxy samples generated from a 3D GAN. In addition, apart from a global latent code that captures the coarse shape and texture information, we augment the generation network with a local branch, where pixel-aligned features are added to faithfully reconstruct face details. We further consider a new pipeline to perform 3D view-consistent editing. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art inversion methods in both shape and texture reconstruction quality. Code and data will be released.

Proximity effect in PbTe-Pb hybrid nanowire Josephson junctions

Semiconductor-superconductor hybrid nanowires are a leading material platform for the realization of Majorana zero modes. The semiconductors in previous studies are dominantly InAs or InSb. In this work, we show the induced superconductivity in a PbTe nanowire epitaxially coupled to a superconductor Pb. The Josephson junction device based on this hybrid reveals a gate-tunable supercurrent in the open regime and a hard superconducting gap in the tunneling regime. By demonstrating the superconducting proximity effect, our result can enable Majorana searches and other applications like gate-tunable qubits in a new semiconductor system.

Electronic Origin of Half-metal to Semiconductor Transition and Colossal Magnetoresistance in Spinel HgCr2Se4

Half-metals are ferromagnets hosting spin-polarized conducting carriers and crucial for spintronics applications. The chromium spinel HgCr2Se4 represents a unique type of half-metal, which features a half-metal to semiconductor transition (HMST) and exhibits colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) across the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (FM-PM) transition. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we find that the Fermi surface of n-type HgCr2Se4 (n-HgCr2Se4) consists of a single electron pocket which moves above the Fermi level (EF) upon the FM-PM transition, leading to the HMST. Such a Lifshitz transition manifests a giant band splitting which originates from the exchange interaction unveiled with a specific chemical nonstoichiometry. The exchange band splitting and the chemical nonstoichiometry are two key ingredients to the HMST and CMR, consistent with our ab-initio calculation. Our findings provide spectroscopic evidences of the electronic origin of the anomalous properties of HgCr2Se4, which address the unique phase transition in half-metals.

Engineered Kondo screening and nonzero Berry phase in SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Controlling the interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons at the oxide interfaces can lead to exotic magnetic states. Here we devise SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures with varied thickness of the LaTiO3 layer (n monolayers) to investigate the magnetic interactions in the two-dimensional electron gas system. The heterostructures exhibit significant Kondo effect when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), manifesting the strong interaction between the itinerant electrons and the localized magnetic moments at the interfaces, while the Kondo effect is greatly inhibited when n = 20. Notably, distinct Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed and a nonzero Berry phase of π is extracted when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), which is absent in the heterostructure with thicker LaTiO3 layer (n = 20). The observed phenomena are consistently interpreted as a result of sub-band splitting and symmetry breaking due to the interplay between the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic orderings in the heterostructures. Our findings provide a route for exploring and manipulating nontrivial electronic band structures at complex oxide interfaces.
