Analysis on Energy Efficiency of RIS-Assisted Multiuser Downlink Near-Field Communications

In this paper, we focus on the energy efficiency (EE) optimization and analysis of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiuser downlink near-field communications. Specifically, we conduct a comprehensive study on several key factors affecting EE performance, including the number of RIS elements, the types of reconfigurable elements, reconfiguration resolutions, and the maximum transmit power. To accurately capture the power characteristics of RISs, we adopt more practical power consumption models for three commonly used reconfigurable elements in RISs: PIN diodes, varactor diodes, and radio frequency (RF) switches. These different elements may result in RIS systems exhibiting significantly different energy efficiencies (EEs), even when their spectral efficiencies (SEs) are similar. Considering discrete phases implemented at most RISs in practice, which makes their optimization NP-hard, we develop a nested alternating optimization framework to maximize EE, consisting of an outer integer-based optimization for discrete RIS phase reconfigurations and a nested non-convex optimization for continuous transmit power allocation within each iteration. Extensive comparisons with multiple benchmark schemes validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed framework. Furthermore, based on the proposed optimization method, we analyze the EE performance of RISs across different key factors and identify the optimal RIS architecture yielding the highest EE.

Gradient Compression and Correlation Driven Federated Learning for Wireless Traffic Prediction

Wireless traffic prediction plays an indispensable role in cellular networks to achieve proactive adaptation for communication systems. Along this line, Federated Learning (FL)-based wireless traffic prediction at the edge attracts enormous attention because of the exemption from raw data transmission and enhanced privacy protection. However FL-based wireless traffic prediction methods still rely on heavy data transmissions between local clients and the server for local model updates. Besides, how to model the spatial dependencies of local clients under the framework of FL remains uncertain. To tackle this, we propose an innovative FL algorithm that employs gradient compression and correlation-driven techniques, effectively minimizing data transmission load while preserving prediction accuracy. Our approach begins with the introduction of gradient sparsification in wireless traffic prediction, allowing for significant data compression during model training. We then implement error feedback and gradient tracking methods to mitigate any performance degradation resulting from this compression. Moreover, we develop three tailored model aggregation strategies anchored in gradient correlation, enabling the capture of spatial dependencies across diverse clients. Experiments have been done with two real-world datasets and the results demonstrate that by capturing the spatio-temporal characteristics and correlation among local clients, the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms and can increase the communication efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude without losing prediction accuracy. Unleashing the Potential of Beamspace Modulation in Near-Field MIMO: Opportunities and Challenges

The principal distinction in transitioning from far-field multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to near-field MIMO configurations lies in the notable augmentation of spatial degrees of freedom (DoF). This increase is not static;rather, it dynamically fluctuates in response to user mobility. A critical challenge emerges in effectively leveraging this significantly enhanced and continuously evolving spatial DoF, particularly when constrained by a limited and energy-intensive array of radio frequency (RF) chains. This article presents an exhaustive review of the current methodologies for exploring spatial DoF in MIMO systems, with a particular emphasis on the near-field context. Central to this review is the exploration of beamspace modulation, a technique that ingeniously capitalizes on the increased and dynamic spatial DoFs inherent in near-field MIMO systems. This strategic exploitation is demonstrated to yield significant enhancements in both spectral efficiency and system reliability. Furthermore, the article delves into a detailed analysis of the multifaceted challenges associated with implementing this technology. Through this comprehensive evaluation, the work provides crucial insights into ongoing efforts to navigate these challenges and suggests potential pathways for future research in this rapidly evolving field.

Joint User Scheduling, Power Allocation, and Rate Control for MC-RSMA in URLLC Services

This paper investigates the resource management problem in multi-carrier rate-splitting multiple access (MC-RSMA) systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) applications. To explore the trade-off between the decoding error probability and achievable rate, effective throughput (ET) is adopted as the utility function in this study. Then, a mixed-integer non-convex problem is formulated, where power allocation, rate control, and user grouping are jointly taken into consideration. To tackle this problem, we approximate the achievable ET using a lower bound and then develop a decomposition method to decouple optimization variables. Specifically, for a given user grouping scheme, an iteration-based concave-convex programming (CCCP) method and an iteration-free lower-bound approximation (LBA) method are proposed for power allocation and rate control. Next, a greedy search-based scheme and a heuristic grouping scheme are developed for the user-grouping problem. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the CCCP and LBA methods in power allocation and rate control and the greedy search-based and heuristic grouping methods in user grouping. Besides, the superiority of RSMA for URLLC services is demonstrated when compared to spatial division multiple access.

Blockage-Aware Robust Beamforming in RIS-Aided Mobile Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are sensitive to blockage over radio propagation paths. The emerging paradigm of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has the potential to overcome this issue by its ability to arbitrarily reflect the incident signals toward desired directions. This paper proposes a Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion-based blockage-aware algorithm to improve communication resilience against blockage in mobile mmWave multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. By virtue of this pragmatic blockage-aware technique, we further propose an outage-constrained beamforming design for downlink mmWave MIMO transmission to achieve outage probability minimization and achievable rate maximization. To minimize the outage probability, a robust RIS beamformer with variant beamwidth is designed to combat uncertain channel state information (CSI). For the rate maximization problem, an accelerated projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithm is developed to solve the computational challenge of high-dimensional RIS phase-shift matrix (PSM) optimization. Particularly, we leverage a subspace constraint to reduce the scope of the projection operation and formulate a new Nesterov momentum acceleration scheme to speed up the convergence process of PGD. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed blockage-aware approach, and the proposed accelerated PGD algorithm outperforms a number of representative baseline algorithms in terms of the achievable rate.

Green Holographic MIMO Communications With A Few Transmit Radio Frequency Chains

Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications are widely recognized as a promising candidate for the next-generation air interface. With holographic MIMO surface, the number of the spatial degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) considerably increases and also significantly varies as the user moves. To fully employ the large and varying number of spatial DoFs, the number of equipped RF chains has to be larger than or equal to the largest number of spatial DoFs. However, this causes much waste as radio frequency (RF) chains (especially the transmit RF chains) are costly and power-hungry. To avoid the heavy burden, this paper investigates green holographic MIMO communications with a few transmit RF chains under an electromagnetic-based communication model. We not only look at the fundamental capacity limits but also propose an effective transmission, namely non-uniform holographic pattern modulation (NUHPM), to achieve the capacity limit in the high signal-to-noise (SNR) regime. The analytical result sheds light on the green evaluation of MIMO communications, which can be realized by increasing the size of the antenna aperture without increasing the number of transmit RF chains. Numerical results are provided to verify our analysis and to show the great performance gain by employing the additional spatial DoFs as modulation resources.

Vehicular Behavior-Aware Beamforming Design for Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Communication and sensing are two important features of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In traditional vehicle-mounted devices, communication and sensing modules exist but in an isolated way, resulting in a waste of hardware resources and wireless spectrum. In this paper, to cope with the above inefficiency, we propose a vehicular behavior-aware integrated sensing and communication (VBA-ISAC) beamforming design for the vehicle-mounted transmitter with multiple antennas. In this work, beams are steered based on vehicular behaviors to assist driving and meanwhile provide spectral-efficient uplink data services with the help of a roadside unit (RSU). Specifically, we first predict the area of interest (AoI) to be sensed based on the vehicles' trajectories. Then, we formulate a VBA-ISAC beamforming design problem to sense the AoI while maximizing the spectral efficiency of uplink communications, where a trade-off factor is introduced to balance the communication and sensing performance. A semi-definite relaxation-based beampattern mismatch minimization (SDR-BMM) algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem. To reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, we further improve the proposed VBA-ISAC beamforming design by introducing the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) structure. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of VBA-ISAC scheme and show that the proposed beamforming design outperforms the benchmarks in both spectral efficiency and radar beampattern.

Federated Radio Frequency Fingerprinting with Model Transfer and Adaptation

The Radio frequency (RF) fingerprinting technique makes highly secure device authentication possible for future networks by exploiting hardware imperfections introduced during manufacturing. Although this technique has received considerable attention over the past few years, RF fingerprinting still faces great challenges of channel-variation-induced data distribution drifts between the training phase and the test phase. To address this fundamental challenge and support model training and testing at the edge, we propose a federated RF fingerprinting algorithm with a novel strategy called model transfer and adaptation (MTA). The proposed algorithm introduces dense connectivity among convolutional layers into RF fingerprinting to enhance learning accuracy and reduce model complexity. Besides, we implement the proposed algorithm in the context of federated learning, making our algorithm communication efficient and privacy-preserved. To further conquer the data mismatch challenge, we transfer the learned model from one channel condition and adapt it to other channel conditions with only a limited amount of information, leading to highly accurate predictions under environmental drifts. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is model-agnostic and also signal-irrelevant. Compared with state-of-the-art RF fingerprinting algorithms, our algorithm can improve prediction performance considerably with a performance gain of up to 15\%.

Paving the Way for Distributed Artificial Intelligence over the Air

Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) is regarded as one of the most promising techniques to provide intelligent services under strict privacy protection regulations for multiple clients. By applying DAI, training on raw data is carried out locally, while the trained outputs, e.g., model parameters, from multiple local clients, are sent back to a central server for aggregation. Recently, for achieving better practicality, DAI is studied in conjunction with wireless communication networks, incorporating various random effects brought by wireless channels. However, because of the complex and case-dependent nature of wireless channels, a generic simulator for applying DAI in wireless communication networks is still lacking. To accelerate the development of DAI applied in wireless communication networks, we propose a generic system design in this paper as well as an associated simulator that can be set according to wireless channels and system-level configurations. Details of the system design and analysis of the impacts of wireless environments are provided to facilitate further implementations and updates. We employ a series of experiments to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system design and reveal its superior scalability.

Data Privacy and Utility Trade-Off Based on Mutual Information Neural Estimator

In the era of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), data owners need to share a large amount of data with the intended receivers in an insecure environment, posing a trade-off issue between user privacy and data utility. The privacy utility trade-off was facilitated through a privacy funnel based on mutual information. Nevertheless, it is challenging to characterize the mutual information accurately with small sample size or unknown distribution functions. In this article, we propose a privacy funnel based on mutual information neural estimator (MINE) to optimize the privacy utility trade-off by estimating mutual information. Instead of computing mutual information in traditional way, we estimate it using an MINE, which obtains the estimated mutual information in a trained way, ensuring that the estimation results are as precise as possible. We employ estimated mutual information as a measure of privacy and utility, and then form a problem to optimize data utility by training a neural network while the estimator's privacy discourse is less than a threshold. The simulation results also demonstrated that the estimated mutual information from MINE works very well to approximate the mutual information even with a limited number of samples to quantify privacy leakage and data utility retention, as well as optimize the privacy utility trade-off.

Dual Attention-Based Federated Learning for Wireless Traffic Prediction

Wireless traffic prediction is essential for cellular networks to realize intelligent network operations, such as load-aware resource management and predictive control. Existing prediction approaches usually adopt centralized training architectures and require the transferring of huge amounts of traffic data, which may raise delay and privacy concerns for certain scenarios. In this work, we propose a novel wireless traffic prediction framework named \textit{Dual Attention-Based Federated Learning} (FedDA), by which a high-quality prediction model is trained collaboratively by multiple edge clients. To simultaneously capture the various wireless traffic patterns and keep raw data locally, FedDA first groups the clients into different clusters by using a small augmentation dataset. Then, a quasi-global model is trained and shared among clients as prior knowledge, aiming to solve the statistical heterogeneity challenge confronted with federated learning. To construct the global model, a dual attention scheme is further proposed by aggregating the intra- and inter-cluster models, instead of simply averaging the weights of local models. We conduct extensive experiments on two real-world wireless traffic datasets and results show that FedDA outperforms state-of-the-art methods. The average mean squared error performance gains on the two datasets are up to 10\% and 30\%, respectively.

On Telecommunication Service Imbalance and Infrastructure Resource Deployment

The digital divide restricting the access of people living in developing areas to the benefits of modern information and communications technologies has become a major challenge and research focus. To well understand and finally bridge the digital divide, we first need to discover a proper measure to characterize and quantify the telecommunication service imbalance. In this regard, we propose a fine-grained and easy-to-compute imbalance index, aiming to quantitatively link the relation among telecommunication service imbalance, telecommunication infrastructure, and demographic distribution. The mathematically elegant and generic form of the imbalance index allows consistent analyses for heterogeneous scenarios and can be easily tailored to incorporate different telecommunication policies and application scenarios. Based on this index, we also propose an infrastructure resource deployment strategy by minimizing the average imbalance index of any geographical segment. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed imbalance index by showing a high degree of correlation to existing congeneric but coarse-grained measures and the superiority of the infrastructure resource deployment strategy.

Sparse Code Multiple Access for 6G Wireless Communication Networks: Recent Advances and Future Directions

As 5G networks rolling out in many different countries nowadays, the time has come to investigate how to upgrade and expand them towards 6G, where the latter is expected to realize the interconnection of everything as well as the development of a ubiquitous intelligent mobile world for intelligent life. To enable this epic leap in communications, this article provides an overview and outlook on the application of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) for 6G wireless communication systems, which is an emerging disruptive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for the enabling of massive connectivity. We propose to apply SCMA to a massively distributed access system (MDAS), whose architecture is based on fiber-based visible light communication (FVLC), ultra-dense network (UDN), and NOMA. Under this framework, we consider the interactions between optical front-hauls and wireless access links. In order to stimulate more upcoming research in this area, we outline a number of promising directions associated with SCMA for faster, more reliable, and more efficient multiple access in future 6G communication networks.

Smart Buildings Enabled by 6G Communications

Smart building (SB), a promising solution to fast-paced and continuous urbanization around the world, includes the integration of a wide range of systems and services and involves the construction of multiple layers. SB is capable of sensing, acquiring, and processing a very large amount of data as well as performing appropriate actions and adaptation. Rapid increases in the number of connected nodes and thereby the data transmission demand of SB have led to conventional transmission and processing techniques becoming insufficient to provide satisfactory services. In order to enhance the intelligence of SBs and achieve efficient monitoring and control, sixth generation (6G) communication technologies, particularly indoor visible light communications (VLC) and machine learning (ML), are required to be incorporated in SBs. Herein, we envision a novel SB framework featuring a reliable data transmission network, powerful data processing, and reasoning abilities, all of which are enabled by 6G communications. Primary simulation results support the promising visions of the proposed SB framework.

Power Allocation for Relayed OFDM with Index Modulation Assisted by Artificial Neural Network

In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution parameters. The relay node adopts the fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (FG AF) relaying protocol. We employ the adaptive moment estimation method (Adam) to implement back-propagation learning and simulate the proposed power allocation scheme. The analytical and simulation results show that the proposed power allocation scheme is able to provide comparable performance as the optimal solution but with lower complexity.

What should 6G be?

The standardization of fifth generation (5G) communications has been completed, and the 5G network should be commercially launched in 2020. As a result, the visioning and planning of sixth generation (6G) communications has begun, with an aim to provide communication services for the future demands of the 2030s. Here we provide a vision for 6G that could serve a research guide in the post-5G era. We suggest that human-centric mobile communications will still be the most important application of 6G and the 6G network should be human centric. Thus, high security, secrecy, and privacy should be key features of 6G and should be given particular attention by the wireless research community. To support this vision, we provide a systematic framework in which potential application scenarios of 6G are anticipated and subdivided. We subsequently define key potential features of 6G and discuss the required communication technologies. We also explore the issues beyond communication technologies that could hamper research and deployment of 6G.

Relay Assisted OFDM with Subcarrier Number Modulation in Multi-Hop Cooperative Networks

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) manifests its superior nature of high spectral efficiency (SE) and low complexity for signal estimation. To exploit the spatial gain of OFDM-SNM, we propose a relay assisted OFDM-SNM scheme for multi-hop cooperative systems in this letter. It is stipulated that a relay operated by decode-and-forward (DF) and half-duplex (HD) protocols exists in each hop. We analyze the outage performance of the relay assisted OFDM-SNM system. The average outage probability is approximated in closed form. Moreover, to reveal the diversity and coding gains of relay assisted OFDM-SNM, we explore the asymptotic outage performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by power series expansion. To verify the improvement on outage performance and energy efficiency, we carry out the comparison among different multi-hops systems with traditional OFDM-SNM fixing a certain distance from source to destination. Simulation results corroborate the derived outage probabilities and provide insight into the proposed system in this letter.
