Relay Assisted OFDM with Subcarrier Number Modulation in Multi-Hop Cooperative Networks

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) manifests its superior nature of high spectral efficiency (SE) and low complexity for signal estimation. To exploit the spatial gain of OFDM-SNM, we propose a relay assisted OFDM-SNM scheme for multi-hop cooperative systems in this letter. It is stipulated that a relay operated by decode-and-forward (DF) and half-duplex (HD) protocols exists in each hop. We analyze the outage performance of the relay assisted OFDM-SNM system. The average outage probability is approximated in closed form. Moreover, to reveal the diversity and coding gains of relay assisted OFDM-SNM, we explore the asymptotic outage performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by power series expansion. To verify the improvement on outage performance and energy efficiency, we carry out the comparison among different multi-hops systems with traditional OFDM-SNM fixing a certain distance from source to destination. Simulation results corroborate the derived outage probabilities and provide insight into the proposed system in this letter.

Energy-Efficient Fixed-Gain AF Relay Assisted OFDM with Index Modulation

To broaden the application scenario and reduce energy consumption, we propose an energy-efficient fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay assisted orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) scheme in this letter. The proposed system needs neither instantaneous channel state information (CSI) nor complicated processing at the relay node. It operates based on the power allocation scheme that minimizes the sum of transmit power at both source and relay node, given an outage probability constraint. Through a series of problem transformation and simplification, we convert the original power allocation problem to its relaxed version and solve it using convex programming techniques. To reveal the computing efficiency of the proposed power allocation scheme, we analyze its computational complexity. Numerical simulations substantiate that the proposed optimization scheme has a neglectable loss compared with the brute force search, but the computational complexity can be considerably reduced.

Enhanced Huffman Coded OFDM with Index Modulation

In this paper, we propose an enhanced Huffman coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (EHC-OFDM-IM) scheme. The proposed scheme is capable of utilizing all legitimate subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and adapting the bijective mapping relation between SAPs and leaves on a given Huffman tree according to channel state information (CSI). As a result, a dynamic codebook update mechanism is obtained, which can provide more reliable transmissions. We take the average block error rate (BLER) as the performance evaluation metric and approximate it in closed form when the transmit power allocated to each subcarrier is independent of channel states. Also, we propose two CSI-based power allocation schemes with different requirements for computational complexity to further improve the error performance. Subsequently, we carry out numerical simulations to corroborate the error performance analysis and the proposed dynamic power allocation schemes. By studying the numerical results, we find that the depth of the Huffman tree has a significant impact on the error performance when the SAP-to-leaf mapping relation is optimized based on CSI. Meanwhile, through numerical results, we also discuss the trade-off between error performance and data transmission rate and investigate the impacts of imperfect CSI on the error performance of EHC-OFDM-IM.

Prospect Theory for Human-Centric Communications

Entering the 5G/6G era, the core concept of human-centric communications has intensified the search effort into analytical frameworks for integrating technological and non-technological domains. Among non-technological domains, human behavioral, psychological, and socio-economic contexts are widely considered as indispensable elements for characterizing user experience (UE). In this study, we introduce the prospect theory as a promising methodology for modeling UE and perceptual measurements for human-centric communications. As the founding pillar of behavioral economics, the prospect theory proposes the non-linear quantity and probability perception of human psychology, which extends to five fundamental behavioral attributes that have profound implications for diverse disciplines. By expatiating on the prospect theoretic framework, we aim to provide a guideline for developing human-centric communications and articulate a novel interdisciplinary research area for further investigation.

Privacy Preserving Location Data Publishing: A Machine Learning Approach

Publishing datasets plays an essential role in open data research and promoting transparency of government agencies. However, such data publication might reveal users' private information. One of the most sensitive sources of data is spatiotemporal trajectory datasets. Unfortunately, merely removing unique identifiers cannot preserve the privacy of users. Adversaries may know parts of the trajectories or be able to link the published dataset to other sources for the purpose of user identification. Therefore, it is crucial to apply privacy preserving techniques before the publication of spatiotemporal trajectory datasets. In this paper, we propose a robust framework for the anonymization of spatiotemporal trajectory datasets termed as machine learning based anonymization (MLA). By introducing a new formulation of the problem, we are able to apply machine learning algorithms for clustering the trajectories and propose to use $k$-means algorithm for this purpose. A variation of $k$-means algorithm is also proposed to preserve the privacy in overly sensitive datasets. Moreover, we improve the alignment process by considering multiple sequence alignment as part of the MLA. The framework and all the proposed algorithms are applied to TDrive and Geolife location datasets. The experimental results indicate a significantly higher utility of datasets by anonymization based on MLA framework.

Fast Channel Estimation and Beam Tracking for Millimeter Wave Vehicular Communications

Millimeter wave (mmWave) has been claimed to be the only viable solution for high-bandwidth vehicular communications. However, frequent channel estimation and beamforming required to provide a satisfactory quality of service limits mmWave for vehicular communications. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation and beam tracking framework for mmWave communications in a vehicular network setting. For channel estimation, we propose an algorithm termed robust adaptive multi-feedback (RAF) that achieves comparable estimation performance as existing channel estimation algorithms, with a significantly smaller number of feedback bits. We derive upper and lower bounds on the probability of estimation error (PEE) of the RAF algorithm, given a number of channel estimations, whose accuracy is verified through Monte Carlo simulations. For beam tracking, we propose a new practical model for mmWave vehicular communications. In contrast to the prior works, the model is based on position, velocity, and channel coefficient, which allows a significant improvement of the tracking performance. Focused on the new beam tracking model, we re-derive the equations for Jacobian matrices, reducing the complexity for vehicular communications. An extensive number of simulations is conducted to show the superiority of our proposed channel estimation method and beam tracking algorithm in comparison with the existing algorithms and models. Our simulations suggest that the RAF algorithm can achieve the desired PEE, while on average, reducing the feedback overhead by 75.5% and the total channel estimation time by 14%. The beam tracking algorithm is also shown to significantly improve beam tracking performance, allowing more room for data transmission.

PHY Research Is Sick but Curable: An Empirical Analysis

The controversy and argument on the usefulness of the physical layer (PHY) academic research for wireless communications are long-standing since the cellular communication paradigm gets to its maturity. In particular, researchers suspect that the performance improvement in cellular communications is primarily attributable to the increases in telecommunication infrastructure and radio spectrum instead of the PHY academic research, whereas concrete evidence is lacking. To respond to this controversy from an objective perspective, we employ econometric approaches to quantify the contributions of the PHY academic research and other performance determinants. Through empirical analysis and the quantitative evidence obtained, albeit preliminary, we shed light on the following issues: 1) what determines the cross-national differences in cellular network performance; 2) to what extent the PHY academic research and other factors affect cellular network performance; 3) what suggestions we can obtain from the data analysis for the stakeholders of the PHY research. To the best of our knowledge, this article is the first `empirical telecommunication research,' and the first effort to involve econometric methodologies to evaluate the usefulness of the PHY academic research.

Enhanced Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing with Subcarrier Number Modulation

A novel modulation scheme termed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proposed and regarded as one of the promising candidate modulation schemes for next generation networks. Although OFDM-SNM is capable of having a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) and plain OFDM under certain conditions, its reliability is relatively inferior to these existing schemes, because the number of active subcarriers varies. In this regard, we propose an enhanced OFDM-SNM scheme in this paper, which utilizes the flexibility of placing subcarriers to harvest a coding gain in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. In particular, we stipulate a methodology that optimizes the subcarrier activation pattern (SAP) by subcarrier assignment using instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and therefore the subcarriers with higher channel power gains will be granted the priority to be activated, given the number of subcarriers is fixed. We also analyze the proposed enhanced OFDM-SNM system in terms of outage and error performance. The average outage probability and block error rate (BLER) are derived and approximated in closed-form expressions, which are further verified by numerical results generated by Monte Carlo simulations. The high-reliability nature of the enhanced OFDM-SNM makes it a promising candidate for implementing in the Internet of Things (IoT) with stationary machine-type devices (MTDs), which are subject to slow fading and supported by proper power supply.

Toward Spectral and Energy Efficient 5G Networks Using Relayed OFDM with Index Modulation

Next generation wireless networks are expected to provide much higher data throughput and reliable connections for a far larger number of wireless service subscribers and machine-type nodes, which result in increasingly stringent requirements of spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) stands out as a promising solution to satisfy the SE requirement with a reasonable increase in system complexity. However, the EE of OFDM-IM is still required to be enhanced. Moreover, diversity gain is hardly harvested in OFDM-IM systems, which hinders further reliability enhancement. In this regard, relay assisted OFDM-IM, as a promising joint paradigm to achieve both high SE and EE, was proposed and has been studied since last year. The objectives of this article are to summarize the recent achievements of this joint paradigm, articulate its pros and cons, and reveal the corresponding challenges and future work.

A Novel Error Performance Analysis Methodology for OFDM-IM

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) has become a high-profile candidate for the modulation scheme in next generation networks, and many works have been published to analyze it in recent years. Error performance is one of the most important and interesting aspects of OFDM-IM, which has been analyzed in most works. However, most of them employ two key approximations to derive the closed-form expressions of block error rate (BLER) and/or average bit error rate (BER). The first one is to utilize the union bound assisted by the pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis, and the second one is to employ an exponential approximation of Q-function. In this letter, we apply Craig's formula to analyze the error performance for OFDM-IM in place of the exponential approximation. Because Craig's formula is the exact expression of Q-function, the accuracy of analytical results regarding error performance for OFDM-IM can be improved. We examine the proposed error performance analysis methodology based on Craig's formula by investigating both average BLER and BER.

Signal Shaping for Generalized Spatial Modulation and Generalized Quadrature Spatial Modulation

This paper investigates generic signal shaping methods for multiple-data-stream generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) and generalized quadrature spatial modulation (GenQSM) based on the maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MMED) criterion. Three cases with different channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) are considered, including no CSIT, statistical CSIT and perfect CSIT. A unified optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal transmit vector set under size, power and sparsity constraints. We propose an optimization-based signal shaping (OBSS) approach by solving the formulated problem directly and a codebook-based signal shaping (CBSS) approach by finding sub-optimal solutions in discrete space. In the OBSS approach, we reformulate the original problem to optimize the signal constellations used for each transmit antenna combination (TAC). Both the size and entry of all signal constellations are optimized. Specifically, we suggest the use of a recursive design for size optimization. The entry optimization is formulated as a non-convex large-scale quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem and can be solved by existing optimization techniques with rather high complexity. To reduce the complexity, we propose the CBSS approach using a codebook generated by quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols and a low-complexity selection algorithm to choose the optimal transmit vector set. Simulation results show that the OBSS approach exhibits the optimal performance in comparison with existing benchmarks. However, the OBSS approach is impractical for large-size signal shaping and adaptive signal shaping with instantaneous CSIT due to the demand of high computational complexity. As a low-complexity approach, CBSS shows comparable performance and can be easily implemented in large-size systems.

Binary-Tree Encoding for Uniform Binary Sources in Index Modulation Systems

The problem of designing bit-to-pattern mappings and power allocation schemes for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems that employ subcarrier index modulation (IM) is considered. We assume the binary source conveys a stream of independent, uniformly distributed bits to the pattern mapper, which introduces a constraint on the pattern transmission probability distribution that can be quantified using a binary tree formalism. Under this constraint, we undertake the task of maximizing the achievable rate subject to the availability of channel knowledge at the transmitter. The optimization variables are the pattern probability distribution (i.e., the bit-to-pattern mapping) and the transmit powers allocated to active subcarriers. To solve the problem, we first consider the relaxed problem where pattern probabilities are allowed to take any values in the interval [0,1] subject to a sum probability constraint. We develop (approximately) optimal solutions to the relaxed problem by using new bounds and asymptotic results, and then use a novel heuristic algorithm to project the relaxed solution onto a point in the feasible set of the constrained problem. Numerical analysis shows that this approach is capable of achieving the maximum mutual information for the relaxed problem in low and high-SNR regimes and offers noticeable benefits in terms of achievable rate relative to a conventional OFDM-IM benchmark.

Power Allocation for Adaptive OFDM Index Modulation in Cooperative Networks

In this paper, we propose a power allocation strategy for the adaptive orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) in cooperative networks. The allocation strategy is based on the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, and aims at maximizing the average network capacity according to the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). As the transmit power at source and relay is constrained separately, we can thus formulate an optimization problem by allocating power to active subcarriers. Compared to the conventional uniform power allocation strategy, the proposed dynamic strategy can lead to a higher average network capacity, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. The analysis is also verified by numerical results produced by Monte Carlo simulations. By applying the proposed power allocation strategy, the efficiency of adaptive OFDM IM can be enhanced in practice, which paves the way for its implementation in the future, especially for cell-edge communications.

Outage Performance Analysis of Multicarrier Relay Selection for Cooperative Networks

In this paper, we analyze the outage performance of two multicarrier relay selection schemes, i.e. bulk and per-subcarrier selections, for two-hop orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. To provide a comprehensive analysis, three forwarding protocols: decode-and-forward (DF), fixed-gain (FG) amplify-and-forward (AF) and variable-gain (VG) AF relay systems are considered. We obtain closed-form approximations for the outage probability and closed-form expressions for the asymptotic outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region for all cases. Our analysis is verified by Monte Carlo simulations, and provides an analytical framework for multicarrier systems with relay selection.

Multicarrier Relay Selection for Full-Duplex Relay-Assisted OFDM D2D Systems

In this paper, we propose a full-duplex orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) device-to-device (D2D) system in two-hop networks, where multiple full-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relays assist the transmission from D2D user equipment (DUE) transmitter to DUE receiver. By such a transmission mechanism, the signal transmitted by the DUE transmitter does not need to go through a base station (BS). Meanwhile, due to the adoption of underlay D2D communication protocol, power control mechanisms are thereby necessary to be applied to mitigate the interference to conventional cellular communications. Based on these considerations, we analyze the outage performance of the proposed system, and derive the exact expressions of outage probabilities when bulk and per-subcarrier relay selection criteria are applied. Furthermore, closed-form expressions of outage probabilities are also obtained for special cases when the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) between BS and cellular user equipments (CUEs) is not accessible, so that a static power control mechanism is applied. Subsequently, we also investigate the outage performance optimization problem by coordinating transmit power among DUE transmitter and relays, and provide a suboptimal solution, which is capable of improving the outage performance. All analysis is substantiated by numerical results provided by Monte Carlo simulations. The analytical and numerical results demonstrated in this paper can provide an insight into the full-duplex relay-assisted OFDM D2D systems, and serve as a guideline for its implementation in next generation networks.

Outage Performance of Two-Hop OFDM Systems with Spatially Random Decode-and-Forward Relays

In this paper, we analyze the outage performance of different multicarrier relay selection schemes for two-hop orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in a Poisson field of relays. In particular, special emphasis is placed on decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems, equipped with bulk and per-subcarrier selection schemes, respectively. The exact expressions for outage probability are derived in integrals for general cases. In addition, asymptotic expressions for outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region in the finite circle relay distribution region are determined in closed forms for both relay selection schemes. Also, the outage probabilities for free space in the infinite relay distribution region are derived in closed forms. Meanwhile, a series of important properties related to cooperative systems in random networks are investigated, including diversity, outage probability ratio of two selection schemes and optimization of the number of subcarriers in terms of system throughput. All analysis is numerically verified by simulations. Finally, a framework for analyzing the outage performance of OFDM systems with spatially random relays is constructed, which can be easily modified to analyze other similar cases with different forwarding protocols, location distributions and/or channel conditions.

Adaptive OFDM Index Modulation for Two-Hop Relay-Assisted Networks

In this paper, we propose an adaptive orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) scheme for two-hop relay networks. In contrast to the traditional OFDM IM scheme with a deterministic and fixed mapping scheme, in this proposed adaptive OFDM IM scheme, the mapping schemes between a bit stream and indices of active subcarriers for the first and second hops are adaptively selected by a certain criterion. As a result, the active subcarriers for the same bit stream in the first and second hops can be varied in order to combat slow frequency-selective fading. In this way, the system reliability can be enhanced. Additionally, considering the fact that a relay device is normally a simple node, which may not always be able to perform mapping scheme selection due to limited processing capability, we also propose an alternative adaptive methodology in which the mapping scheme selection is only performed at the source and the relay will simply utilize the selected mapping scheme without changing it. The analyses of average outage probability, network capacity and symbol error rate (SER) are given in closed form for decode-and-forward (DF) relaying networks and are substantiated by numerical results generated by Monte Carlo simulations.
