Categorical primitive forms and Gromov-Witten invariants of $A_n$ singularities

We introduce a categorical analogue of Saito's notion of primitive forms. Let $W$ denote the potential $\frac{1}{n+1} x^{n+1}$. For the category $MF(W)$ of matrix factorizations of $W$ we prove that there exists a unique, up to non-zero constant, categorical primitive form. The corresponding genus zero categorical Gromov-Witten invariants of $MF(W)$ are shown to match with the invariants defined through unfolding of singularities of $W$.

Weyl-loop half metal in Li$_3$(FeO$_3$)$_2$

Nodal-line metals and semimetals, as interesting topological states of matter, have been mostly studied in nonmagnetic materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we predict that fully spin-polarized Weyl loops can be realized in the half metal state for the three-dimensional material Li$_3$(FeO$_3$)$_2$. We show that this material has a ferromagnetic ground state, and it is a half metal with only a single spin channel present near the Fermi level. The spin-up bands form two separate Weyl loops close to the Fermi level, which arise from band inversions and are protected by the glide mirror symmetry. One loop is of type-I, whereas the other loop is of hybrid type. Corresponding to these two loops in the bulk, on the (100) surface, there exist two fully spin-polarized drumheads of surface states within the surface projections of the loops. The effects of the electron correlation and the spin-orbit coupling, as well as the possible hourglass Weyl chains in the nonmagnetic state have been discussed. The realization of fully spin-polarized Weyl-loop fermions in the bulk and drumhead fermions on the surface for a half metal may generate promising applications in spintronics.

From Random to Supervised: A Novel Dropout Mechanism Integrated with Global Information

Dropout is used to avoid overfitting by randomly dropping units from the neural networks during training. Inspired by dropout, this paper presents GI-Dropout, a novel dropout method integrating with global information to improve neural networks for text classification. Unlike the traditional dropout method in which the units are dropped randomly according to the same probability, we aim to use explicit instructions based on global information of the dataset to guide the training process. With GI-Dropout, the model is supposed to pay more attention to inapparent features or patterns. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the dropout with global information on seven text classification tasks, including sentiment analysis and topic classification.

Almost ideal nodal-loop semimetal in monoclinic CuTeO$_3$ material

Nodal-loop semimetals are materials in which the conduction and valence bands cross on a one-dimensional loop in the reciprocal space. For the nodal-loop character to manifest in physical properties, it is desired that the loop is close to the Fermi level, relatively flat in energy, simple in its shape, and not coexisting with other extraneous bands. Here, based on the first-principles calculations, we show that the monoclinic CuTeO$_3$ is a realistic nodal-loop semimetal that satisfies all these requirements. The material features only a single nodal loop around the Fermi level, protected by either of the two independent symmetries: the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and the glide mirror symmetry. The size of the loop can be effectively tuned by strain, and the loop can even be annihilated under stain, making a topological phase transition to a trivial insulator phase. Including the spin-orbit coupling opens a tiny gap at the loop, and the system becomes a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological semimetal with a nontrivial bulk $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant but no global bandgap. The corresponding topological surface states have been identified. We also construct a low-energy effective model to describe the nodal loop and the effect of spin-orbit coupling.

Floquet High Chern Insulators in Periodically Driven Chirally Stacked Multilayer Graphene

Chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene is a semimetal with $\pm p^N$ band-touching at two nonequivalent corners in its Brillioun zone. We predict that an off-resonant circularly polarized light (CPL) drives chirally stacked $N$-layer graphene into a Floquet Chern Insulators (FCIs), a.k.a. quantum anomalous Hall insulators, with tunable high Chern number $C_F=\pm N$ and large gaps. A topological phase transition between such a FCI and a valley Hall (VH) insulator with high valley Chern number $C_v=\pm N$ induced by a voltage gate can be engineered by the parameters of the CPL and voltage gate. We propose a topological domain wall between the FCI and VH phases, along which perfectly valley-polarized $N$-channel edge states propagate unidirectionally without backscattering.

Nodal surface semimetals: Theory and material realization

We theoretically study the three-dimensional topological semimetals with nodal surfaces protected by crystalline symmetries. Different from the well-known nodal-point and nodal-line semimetals, in these materials, the conduction and valence bands cross on closed nodal surfaces in the Brillouin zone. We propose different classes of nodal surfaces, both in the absence and in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In the absence of SOC, a class of nodal surfaces can be protected by spacetime inversion symmetry and sublattice symmetry and characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ index, while another class of nodal surfaces are guaranteed by a combination of nonsymmorphic two-fold screw-rotational symmetry and time-reversal symmetry. We show that the inclusion of SOC will destroy the former class of nodal surfaces but may preserve the latter provided that the inversion symmetry is broken. We further generalize the result to magnetically ordered systems and show that protected nodal surfaces can also exist in magnetic materials without and with SOC, given that certain magnetic group symmetry requirements are satisfied. Several concrete nodal-surface material examples are predicted via the first-principles calculations. The possibility of multi-nodal-surface materials is discussed.

Seiberg-Witten differential via primitive forms

Three-fold quasi-homogeneous isolated rational singularity is argued to define a four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT. The Seiberg-Witten geometry is built on the mini-versal deformation of the singularity. We argue in this paper that the corresponding Seiberg-Witten differential is given by the Gelfand-Leray form of K. Saito's primitive form. Our result also extends the Seiberg-Witten solution to include irrelevant deformations.

Critical behaviors of half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2

We have investigated the critical behavior of a shandite-type half-metal ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2. It exhibits a second-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition with TC = 174 K. To investigate the nature of the magnetic phase transition, a detailed critical exponent study has been performed. The critical components beta, gamma, and delta determined using the modified Arrott plot, the Kouvel-Fisher method as well as the critical isotherm analysis are match reasonably well and follow the scaling equation, confirming that the exponents are unambiguous and intrinsic to the material. The determined exponents of Co3Sn2S2 deviates from theoretical estimated short-range universal models. Instead, Co3Sn2S2 exhibits long-range order in the nature of magnetic interaction with the spin decay as J(r) ~ 1/r^[-(d + sigma)] with sigma = 1.28.

Nonsymmorphic-symmetry-protected hourglass Dirac loop, nodal line, and Dirac point in bulk and monolayer $X_3$SiTe$_6$ ($X=$ Ta, Nb)

Nonsymmorphic space group symmetries can generate exotic band-crossings in topological metals and semimetals. Here, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we reveal rich band-crossing features in the existing layered compounds Ta$_3$SiTe$_6$ and Nb$_3$SiTe$_6$, enabled by nonsymmorphic symmetries. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), these three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials possess accidental Dirac loops and essential fourfold nodal lines. In the presence of SOC, there emerges an hourglass Dirac loop---a fourfold degenerate nodal loop, on which each point is a neck-point of an hourglass-type dispersion. We show that this interesting type of band-crossing is protected and dictated by the nonsymmorphic space group symmetries, and it gives rise to drumhead-like surface states. Furthermore, we also investigate these materials in the monolayer form. We show that these two-dimensional (2D) monolayers host nodal lines in the absence of SOC, and the nodal lines transform to essential spin-orbit Dirac points when SOC is included. Our work suggests a realistic material platform for exploring the fascinating physics associated with nonsymmorphic band-crossings in both 3D and 2D systems.

Effective Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization and geometric applications

We explain the effective renormalization method of quantum field theory in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and illustrate its mathematical applications by three geometric examples: (1) Topological quantum mechanics and algebraic index, (2) Elliptic curve and higher genus mirror symmetry, (3) Calabi-Yau geometry and integrable hierarchy. This note is an expansion of author's talk at ICCM 2016.

Type-II nodal loops: theory and material realization

Nodal loop appears when two bands, typically one electron-like and one hole-like, are crossing each other linearly along a one-dimensional manifold in the reciprocal space. Here we propose a new type of nodal loop which emerges from crossing between two bands which are both electron-like (or hole-like) along certain direction. Close to any point on such loop (dubbed as a type-II nodal loop), the linear spectrum is strongly tilted and tipped over along one transverse direction, leading to marked differences in magnetic, optical, and transport responses compared with the conventional (type-I) nodal loops. We show that the compound K4P3 is an example that hosts a pair of type-II nodal loops close to the Fermi level. Each loop traverses the whole Brillouin zone, hence can only be annihilated in pair when symmetry is preserved. The symmetry and topological protections of the loops as well as the associated surface states are discussed.

An Inter-Node Interference Suppression Approach in Full-Duplex Wireless Communications

Considering that a full-duplex network is comprised of a full-duplex (FD) base station (BS) and two half-duplex (HD) users, one user transmits on the uplink channel and the other receives through the downlink channel on the same frequency. The uplink user will generate inter-user interference (IUI) on the downlink user through the interference channel. In this paper, we propose a novel IUI suppression approach when the BS knows the full channel station information. The main idea of the approach is to retransmit the weighted uplink signal as soon as it has been received at the BS. For the narrowband case, we first derive the closed-form expression of the optimum weighted coefficient when the SI is perfectly cancelled at the BS and then analyze the performance of the proposed IUI suppression approach in practical considerations. Furthermore, the proposed IUI suppression approach can be extended to the broadband case using a time-domain weighted filter. Simulation results shows the advantage over existing IUI suppression schemes.

Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization and the algebraic index

Into a geometric setting, we import the physical interpretation of index theorems via semi-classical analysis in topological quantum field theory. We develop a direct relationship between Fedosov's deformation quantization of a symplectic manifold X and the BV quantization of a one-dimensional sigma model with target X. This model is a quantum field theory of AKSZ type and is quantized rigorously using Costello's homotopic theory of effective renormalization. We show that Fedosov's Abelian connections on the Weyl bundle produce solutions to the effective quantum master equation. Moreover, BV integration produces a natural trace map on the deformation quantized algebra. This formulation allows us to exploit a (rigorous) localization argument in quantum field theory to deduce the algebraic index theorem via semi-classical analysis, i.e., one-loop Feynman diagram computations.

Towards Accurate Word Segmentation for Chinese Patents

A patent is a property right for an invention granted by the government to the inventor. An invention is a solution to a specific technological problem. So patents often have a high concentration of scientific and technical terms that are rare in everyday language. The Chinese word segmentation model trained on currently available everyday language data sets performs poorly because it cannot effectively recognize these scientific and technical terms. In this paper we describe a pragmatic approach to Chinese word segmentation on patents where we train a character-based semi-supervised sequence labeling model by extracting features from a manually segmented corpus of 142 patents, enhanced with information extracted from the Chinese TreeBank. Experiments show that the accuracy of our model reached 95.08% (F1 score) on a held-out test set and 96.59% on development set, compared with an F1 score of 91.48% on development set if the model is trained on the Chinese TreeBank. We also experimented with some existing domain adaptation techniques, the results show that the amount of target domain data and the selected features impact the performance of the domain adaptation techniques.

Twisted supergravity and its quantization

Twisted supergravity is supergravity in a background where the bosonic ghost field takes a non-zero value. This is the supergravity counterpart of the familiar concept of twisting supersymmetric field theories. In this paper, we give conjectural descriptions of type IIA and IIB supergravity in $10$ dimensions. Our conjectural descriptions are in terms of the closed-string field theories associated to certain topological string theories, and we conjecture that these topological string theories are twists of the physical string theories. For type IIB, the results of arXiv:1505.6703 show that our candidate twisted supergravity theory admits a unique quantization in perturbation theory. This is despite the fact that the theories, like the original physical theories, are non-renormalizable. Although we do not prove our conjectures, we amass considerable evidence. We find that our candidates for the twisted supergravity theories contain the residual supersymmetry one would expect. We also prove (using heavily a result of Baulieu arXiv:1009.3893) the open string version of our conjecture: the theory living on a brane in the topological string theory is a twist of the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory living on the brane in the physical string theory.

Quantization of open-closed BCOV theory, I

This is the first in a series of papers which analyze the problem of quantizing the theory coupling Kodaira-Spencer gravity (or BCOV theory) on Calabi-Yau manifolds using the formalism for perturbative QFT developed by the first author. In this paper, we focus on flat space $\mathbb{C}^d$ for $d$ odd. We prove that there exists a unique quantization of the theory coupling BCOV theory and holomorphic Chern-Simons theory with gauge group the supergroup $GL(N \mid N)$. We deduce a canonically defined quantization of BCOV theory on its own. We also discuss some conjectural links between BCOV theory in various dimensions and twists of physical theories: in complex dimension $3$ we conjecture a relationship to twists of $(1,0)$ supersymmetric theories and in complex dimension $5$ to a twist of type IIB supergravity.
