On the Tail of the Overlap Probability Distribution in the Sherrington--Kirkpatrick Model

We investigate the large deviation behavior of the overlap probability density in the Sherrington--Kirkpatrick model from several analytical perspectives. First we analyze the spin glass phase using the coupled replica scheme. Here generically $\frac1N \log P_N(q)$ $\approx$ $- {\cal A}$ $((|q|-q_{EA})^3$, and we compute the first correction to the expansion of $\A$ in powers of $T_c-T$. We study also the $q=1$ case, where $P(q)$ is know exactly. Finally we study the paramagnetic phase, where exact results valid for all $q$'s are obtained. The overall agreement between the various points of view is very satisfactory. Data from large scale numerical simulations show that the predicted behavior can be detected already on moderate lattice sizes.

How glasses explore configuration space

We review a statistical picture of the glassy state derived from the analysis of the off-equilibrium fluctuation-dissipation relations. We define an ultra-long time limit where ``one time quantities'' are close to equilibrium while response and correlation can still display aging. In this limit it is possible to relate the fluctuation-response relation to static breaking of ergodicity. The resulting picture suggests that even far from that limit, the fluctuation-dissipation ratio relates to the rate of growth of the configurational entropy with free-energy density.

Replica bounds for optimization problems and diluted spin systems

In this paper we generalize to the case of diluted spin models and random combinatorial optimization problems a technique recently introduced by Guerra (cond-mat/0205123) to prove that the replica method generates variational bounds for disordered systems. We analyze a family of models that includes the Viana-Bray model, the diluted p-spin model or random XOR-SAT problem, and the random K-SAT problem, showing that the replica method provides an improvable scheme to obtain lower bounds of the free-energy at all temperatures and of the ground state energy. In the case of K-SAT the replica method thus gives upper bounds of the satisfiability threshold.

The Dynamic Phase Transition for Decoding Algorithms

The state-of-the-art error correcting codes are based on large random constructions (random graphs, random permutations, ...) and are decoded by linear-time iterative algorithms. Because of these features, they are remarkable examples of diluted mean-field spin glasses, both from the static and from the dynamic points of view. We analyze the behavior of decoding algorithms using the mapping onto statistical-physics models. This allows to understand the intrinsic (i.e. algorithm independent) features of this behavior.

Testing the Edwards hypothesis in spin systems under tapping dynamics

The Edwards hypothesis of ergodicity of blocked configurations for gently tapped granular materials is tested for abstract models of spin systems on random graphs and spin chains with kinetic constraints. The tapping dynamics is modeled by considering two distinct mechanisms of energy injection: thermal and random tapping. We find that ergodicity depends upon the tapping procedure (i.e. the way the blocked configurations are dynamically accessed): for thermal tapping ergodicity is a good approximation, while it fails to describe the asymptotic stationary state reached by the random tapping dynamics.

Random Heteropolymer Dynamics

We study the Langevin dynamics of the standard random heteropolymer model by mapping the problem to a supersymmetric field theory using the Martin-Siggia-Rose formalism. The resulting model is solved non-perturbatively employing a Gaussian variational approach. In constructing the solution, we assume that the chain is very long and impose the translational invariance which is expected to be present in the bulk of the globule by averaging over the center the of mass coordinate. In this way we derive equations of motion for the correlation and response functions C(t,t') and R(t,t'). The order parameters are extracted from the asymptotic behavior of these functions. We find a dynamical phase diagram with frozen (glassy) and melted (ergodic) phases. In the glassy phase the system fails to reach equilibrium and exhibits aging of the type found in p-spin glasses. Within the approximations used in this study, the random heteropolymer model can be mapped to the problem of a manifold in a random potential with power law correlations.

Spectral Statistics of Instantaneous Normal Modes in Liquids and Random Matrices

We study the statistical properties of eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix ${\cal H}$ (matrix of second derivatives of the potential energy) for a classical atomic liquid, and compare these properties with predictions for random matrix models (RMM). The eigenvalue spectra (the Instantaneous Normal Mode or INM spectra) are evaluated numerically for configurations generated by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that distribution of spacings between nearest neighbor eigenvalues, s, obeys quite well the Wigner prediction $s exp(-s^2)$, with the agreement being better for higher densities at fixed temperature. The deviations display a correlation with the number of localized eigenstates (normal modes) in the liquid; there are fewer localized states at higher densities which we quantify by calculating the participation ratios of the normal modes. We confirm this observation by calculating the spacing distribution for parts of the INM spectra with high participation ratios, obtaining greater conformity with the Wigner form. We also calculate the spectral rigidity and find a substantial dependence on the density of the liquid.

Non trivial overlap distributions at zero temperature

We explore the consequences of Replica Symmetry Breaking at zero temperature. We introduce a repulsive coupling between a system and its unperturbed ground state. In the Replica Symmetry Breaking scenario a finite coupling induces a non trivial overlap probability distribution among the unperturbed ground state and the one in presence of the coupling. We find a closed formula for this probability for arbitrary ultrametric trees, in terms of the parameters defining the tree. The same probability is computed in numerical simulations of a simple model with many ground states, but no ultrametricity: polymers in random media in 1+1 dimension. This gives us an idea of what violation of our formula can be expected in cases when ultrametricity does not hold.

On nonlinear susceptibility in supercooled liquids

In this paper, we discuss theoretically the behavior of the four point nonlinear susceptibility and its associated correlation length for supercooled liquids close to the Mode Coupling instability temperature $T_c$. We work in the theoretical framework of the glass transition as described by mean field theory of disordered systems, and the hypernetted chain approximation. Our results give an interpretation framework for recent numerical findings on heterogeneities in supercooled liquid dynamics.

Ultrametricity in 3D Edwards-Anderson spin glasses

We perform an accurate test of Ultrametricity in the aging dynamics of the three dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass. Our method consists in considering the evolution in parallel of two identical systems constrained to have fixed overlap. This turns out to be a particularly efficient way to study the geometrical relations between configurations at distant large times. Our findings strongly hint towards dynamical ultrametricity in spin glasses, while this is absent in simpler aging systems with domain growth dynamics. A recently developed theory of linear response in glassy systems allows to infer that dynamical ultrametricity implies the same property at the level of equilibrium states.

Theory of Non-linear Susceptibility and Correlation Length in Glasses and Liquids

Within the framework of the effective potential theory of the structural glass transition, we calculate for the p-spin model a static nonlinear susceptibility related to a four-point density correlation function, and show that it grows and diverges in mean field with exponent $γ=1/2$ as the mode coupling critical temperature T_c is approached from below. When T_c is approached from above, we calculate within the mode coupling framework a dynamic nonlinear susceptibility and show that there is a characteristic time where the susceptibility is a maximum, and that this time grows with decreasing T. We find that this susceptibility diverges as T_c is approached from above, and has key features in common with the ``displacement-displacement susceptibility'' recently introduced to measure correlated particle motion in simulations of glass-forming liquids.

Measuring equilibrium properties in aging systems

We corroborate the idea of a close connection between replica symmetry breaking and aging in the linear response function for a large class of finite-dimensional systems with short-range interactions. In these system, characterized by a continuity condition with respect to weak random perturbations of the Hamiltonian, the ``fluctuation dissipation ratio'' in off-equilibrium dynamics should be equal to the static cumulative distribution function of the overlaps. This allows for an experimental measurement of the equilibrium order parameter function.

Critical properties of a three dimensional p-spin model

In this paper we study the critical properties of a finite dimensional generalization of the p-spin model. We find evidence that in dimension three, contrary to its mean field limit, the glass transition is associated to a diverging susceptibility (and correlation length).

Crossover behaviour of a one dimensional Random Energy Model

In this note we formulate a finite dimensional generalization of the Random Energy Model (REM) where we introduce a geometry and spatial correlations between energies. We study the model in dimension one by transfer matrix techniques and we look at the crossover from one dimensional to mean-field behaviour. In a first version of the model the mean field limit reproduces the behaviour of the original REM, while a second version of the model exhibits a first order phase transition with a finite latent heat.

Constrained Boltzmann-Gibbs measures and effective potential for glasses in hypernetted chain approximation and numerical simulations

By means of an effective potential associated to a constrained equilibrium measure and apt to study frozen systems, we investigate glassy freezing in simple liquids in the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation. Differently from other classical approximations of liquid theory, freezing is naturally embedded in the HNC approximation. We get a detailed description of the freezing transition that is analogous to the one got in a large class of mean-field long range spin glass. We compare our findings with Monte Carlo simulations of the same system and conclude that many of the qualitative features of the transition are captured by the approximated theory.

Glass transition and effective potential in the hypernetted chain approximation

We study the glassy transition for simple liquids in the hypernetted chain (HNC) approximation by means of an effective potential recently introduced. Integrating the HNC equations for hard spheres, we find a transition scenario analogous to that of the long range disordered systems with ``one step replica symmetry breaking''. Our result agree qualitatively with Monte Carlo simulations of three dimensional hard spheres.

Effective potential in glassy systems: theory and simulations

We study the phase diagram of glassy systems in presence of an attractive coupling among real replicas. We find competition among a localized and a delocalized phase, that are separated by a coexistence line as in ordinary first order phase transitions. The coexistence line terminates in a critical point. We present numerical simulations for binary glasses in which show that this scenario is realized.

Phase diagram of glassy systems in an external field

We study the mean-field phase diagram of glassy systems in a field pointing in the direction of a metastable state. We find competition among a ``magnetized'' and a ``disordered'' phase, that are separated by a coexistence line as in ordinary first order phase transitions. The coexistence line terminates in a critical point, which in principle can be observed in numerical simulations of glassy models.
