Non-neutral theory of biodiversity

We present a non-neutral stochastic model for the dynamics taking place in a meta-community ecosystems in presence of migration. The model provides a framework for describing the emergence of multiple ecological scenarios and behaves in two extreme limits either as the unified neutral theory of biodiversity or as the Bak-Sneppen model. Interestingly, the model shows a condensation phase transition where one species becomes the dominant one, the diversity in the ecosystems is strongly reduced and the ecosystem is non-stationary. This phase transition extend the principle of competitive exclusion to open ecosystems and might be relevant for the study of the impact of invasive species in native ecologies.

Overlap Interfaces in Hierarchical Spin-Glass models

We discuss interfaces in spin glasses. We present new theoretical results and a numerical method to characterize overlap interfaces and the stability of the spin-glass phase in extended disordered systems. We use this definition to characterize the low temperature phase of hierarchical spin-glass models. We use the Replica Symmetry Breaking theory to evaluate the cost for an overlap interface, which in these models is particularly simple. A comparison of our results from numerical simulations with the theoretical predictions shows good agreement.

Ising model with memory: coarsening and persistence properties

We consider the coarsening properties of a kinetic Ising model with a memory field. The probability of a spin-flip depends on the persistence time of the spin in a state. The more a spin has been in a given state, the less the spin-flip probability is. We numerically studied the growth and persistence properties of such a system on a two dimensional square lattice. The memory introduces energy barriers which freeze the system at zero temperature. At finite temperature we can observe an apparent arrest of coarsening for low temperature and long memory length. However, since the energy barriers introduced by memory are due to local effects, there exists a timescale on which coarsening takes place as for the Ising model. Moreover the two point correlation functions of the Ising model with and without memory are the same, indicating that they belong to the same universality class.

Spin glass models with Kac interactions

In this paper I will review my work on disordered systems -spin glass model with two body and $p>2$ body interactions- with long but finite interaction range $R$. I will describe the relation of these model with Mean Field Theory in the Kac limit and some attempts to go beyond mean field.

Mosaic length and finite interaction-range effects in a one dimensional random energy model

In this paper we study finite interaction range corrections to the mosaic picture of the glass transition as emerges from the study of the Kac limit of large interaction range for disordered models. To this aim we consider point to set correlation functions, or overlaps, in a one dimensional random energy model as a function of the range of interaction. In the Kac limit, the mosaic length defines a sharp first order transition separating a high overlap phase from a low overlap one. Correspondingly we find that overlap curves as a function of the window size and different finite interaction ranges cross roughly at the mosaic lenght. Nonetheless we find very slow convergence to the Kac limit and we discuss why this could be a problem for measuring the mosaic lenght in realistic models.

Self-Averaging Identities for Random Spin Systems

We provide a systematic treatment of self-averaging identities for various spin systems. The method is quite general, basically not relying on the nature of the model, and as a special case recovers the Ghirlanda-Guerra and Aizenman-Contucci identities, which are therefore proven, together with their extension, to be valid in a vaste class of spin models. We use the dilute spin glass as a guiding example.

Analytic determination of dynamical and mosaic length scales in a Kac glass model

We consider a disordered spin model with multi-spin interactions undergoing a glass transition. We introduce a dynamic and a static length scales and compute them in the Kac limit (long--but--finite range interactions). They diverge at the dynamic and static phase transition with exponents (respectively) -1/4 and -1. The two length scales are approximately equal well above the mode coupling transition. Their discrepancy increases rapidly as this transition is approached. We argue that this signals a crossover from mode coupling to activated dynamics.

Local Spin Glass Order in 1D

We study the behavior of one dimensional Kac spin glasses as function of the interaction range. We verify by Montecarlo numerical simulations the crossover from local mean field behavior to global paramagnetism. We investigate the behavior of correlations and find that in the low temperature phase correlations grow at a faster rate then the interaction range. We completely characterize the growth of correlations in the vicinity of the mean-field critical region.

On the dynamics of Kac $p$-spin glasses

This paper discusses the dynamical properties of $p$-spin models with Kac kind interactions. For large but finite interaction range $R$ one finds two different time scales for relaxation. A first relaxation roughly independent of $R$ where the system is confined to limited regions of the configuration space and an $R$ dependent time scale where the system is able to escape the confining regions. I will argue that the $R$ independent time scales can be described through dynamical mean field theory, while non-perturbative new techniques have to be used to deal with the $R$ dependent scales.

A note on the Guerra and Talagrand theorems for Mean Field Spin Glasses: the simple case of spherical models

The aim of this paper is to discuss the main ideas of the Talagrand proof of the Parisi Ansatz for the free-energy of Mean Field Spin Glasses with a physicist's approach. We consider the case of the spherical $p$-spin model, which has the following advantages: 1) the Parisi Ansatz takes the simple ``one step replica symmetry breaking form'', 2) the replica free-energy as a function of the order parameters is simple enough to allow for numerical maximization with arbitrary precision. We present the essential ideas of the proof, we stress its connections with the theory of effective potentials for glassy systems, and we reduce the technically more difficult part of the Talagrand's analysis to an explicit evaluation of the solution of a variational problem.

A minimal stochastic model for influenza evolution

We introduce and discuss a minimal individual-based model for influenza dynamics. The model takes into account the effects of specific immunization against viral strains, but also infectivity randomness and the presence of a short-lived strain transcending immunity recently suggested in the literature. We show by simulations that the resulting model exhibits substitution of viral strains along the years, but that their divergence remains bounded. We also show that dropping any of these features results in a drastically different behavior, leading either to the extinction of the disease, to the proliferation of the viral strains, or to their divergence.

First steps of a nucleation theory in disordered systems

We devise a field theoretical formalism for a microscopic theory of nucleation processes and phase coexistence in finite dimensional glassy systems. We study disordered $p$-spin models with large but finite range of interaction. We work in the framework of glassy effective potential theory which in mean-field is a non-convex, two minima function of the overlap. We will associate metastability and phase coexistence with the existence of space inhomogeneous solution of suitable field equations and we will study the simplest of such solutions.

A field-theoretical approach to the spin glass transition: models with long but finite interaction range

We study spin glasses with Kac type interaction potential for small but finite inverse interaction range $γ$. Using the theoretical setup of coupled replicas, through the replica method we argue that the probability of overlap profiles can be expressed for small $γ$ through a large-deviation functional. This result is supported by rigorous arguments, showing that the large-deviation functional provides at least upper bounds for the probability. Finally we analyze the rate function, in the vicinity of the critical point $T_c=1$ of mean field theory, and we study the free energy cost of overlap interfaces, assuming the validity of a gradient expansion for the rate functional.

Finite-range spin glasses in the Kac limit: free energy and local observables

We study a finite range spin glass model in arbitrary dimension, where the intensity of the coupling between spins decays to zero over some distance $γ^{-1}$. We prove that, under a positivity condition for the interaction potential, the infinite-volume free energy of the system converges to that of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, in the Kac limit $γ\to0$. We study the implication of this convergence for the local order parameter, i.e., the local overlap distribution function and a family of susceptibilities to it associated, and we show that locally the system behaves like its mean field analogue. Similar results are obtained for models with $p$-spin interactions. Finally, we discuss a possible approach to the problem of the existence of long range order for finite $γ$, based on a large deviation functional for overlap profiles. This will be developed in future work.

Number partitioning as random energy model

Number partitioning is a classical problem from combinatorial optimisation. In physical terms it corresponds to a long range anti-ferromagnetic Ising spin glass. It has been rigorously proven that the low lying energies of number partitioning behave like uncorrelated random variables. We claim that neighbouring energy levels are uncorrelated almost everywhere on the energy axis, and that energetically adjacent configurations are uncorrelated, too. Apparently there is no relation between geometry (configuration) and energy that could be exploited by an optimization algorithm. This ``local random energy'' picture of number partitioning is corroborated by numerical simulations and heuristic arguments.

The Kac limit for finite-range spin glasses

We consider a finite range spin glass model in arbitrary dimension, where the strength of the two-body coupling decays to zero over some distance $γ^{-1}$. We show that, under mild assumptions on the interaction potential, the infinite-volume free energy of the system converges to that of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick one, in the Kac limit $γ\to0$. This could be a first step toward an expansion around mean field theory, for spin glass systems.

Replica bounds for diluted non-Poissonian spin systems

In this paper we extend replica bounds and free energy subadditivity arguments to diluted spin-glass models on graphs with arbitrary, non-Poissonian degree distribution. The new difficulties specific of this case are overcome introducing an interpolation procedure that stresses the relation between interpolation methods and the cavity method. As a byproduct we obtain self-averaging identities that generalize the Ghirlanda-Guerra ones to the multi-overlap case.
