Extreme Ultraviolet High-Harmonic Interferometry of Excitation-Induced Bandgap Dynamics in Solids

Interferometry is a fundamental technique in physics, enabling precise measurements through the interference of waves. High-harmonic generation (HHG) in solids has emerged as a powerful method for probing ultrafast electronic dynamics within crystalline structures. In this study, we employed extreme ultraviolet (XUV) high-harmonic interferometry with phase-locked XUV pulse pairs to investigate excitation-induced bandgap dynamics in solids. Our experiments on amorphous SiO2 and crystalline MgO, complemented by analytical modeling and semiconductor Bloch equation simulations, reveal a correlation between transient bandgap modifications and variations in the phase of harmonic emission. These findings suggest a potential pathway for sub-cycle, all-optical control of band structure modifications, advancing prospects for petahertz-scale electronic applications and attosecond diagnostics of carrier dynamics.

Beyond Electric-Dipole Treatment of Light-Matter Interactions in Materials: Nondipole Harmonic Generation in Bulk Si

A beyond electric-dipole light-matter theory is needed to describe emerging X-ray and THz applications for characterization and control of quantum materials but inaccessible as nondipole lattice-aperiodic terms impede on the use of Bloch's theorem. To circumvent this, we derive a formalism that captures dominant nondipole effects in intense electromagnetic fields while conserving lattice translational symmetry. Our approach enables the first accurate nondipole first-principles microscopic simulation of nonperturbative harmonic generation in Si. We reveal nondipole-induced transverse currents generating perturbative even-ordered harmonics and display the onset of nondipole high harmonic generation near the laser damage threshold.

Intra- and intercycle analysis of intraband high-order harmonic generation

We study intraband high-order harmonic generation arising from a band-gap material driven by a linearly polarized laser field. We factorize the intraband high-order harmonic-generation signal into intracycle and intercycle terms. The intracycle term uniquely determines the spectral characteristics whereas the intercycle term merely modulates the spectral features by imposing energy conservation in the long-pulse limit. Through analysis of the intracycle interference, the cutoff is identified, and the origin of the harmonic selection rules is revealed. Further, it is outlined how different components of the bandstructure contribute to different regions of the harmonic spectrum, giving rise to non-trivial intensity scaling of individual harmonics in the plateau region.

High-harmonic spectroscopy of strongly bound excitons in solids

We explore the nonlinear response of ultrafast strong-field driven excitons in a one-dimensional solid with ab initio simulations. We demonstrate from our simulations and analytical model that a finite population of excitons imprints unique signatures to the high-harmonic spectra of materials. We show the exciton population can be retrieved from the spectra. We further demonstrate signatures of exciton recombination and that a shift of the exciton level is imprinted into the harmonic signal. The results open the door to high-harmonic spectroscopy of excitons in condensed-matter systems.

Correlation effects in high-harmonic generation from finite systems

Using the Hubbard model we study how the process of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) is modified by beyond mean-field electron-electron correlation for both finite and bulk systems. A finite-size enhancement of the HHG signal is found and attributed to electrons backscattering off the lattice edges. Additionally, with increasing strength of the electron-electron correlation an enhancement of the high-frequency regime of the HHG spectrum is found. This is attributed to the on-site Coulomb repulsion between electrons giving rise to a localized quiver motion of the electrons. The finite-lattice enhancement dominates the HHG spectra from a few harmonic orders until a threshold from which the correlational enhancement dominates. This threshold is determined by the degree of correlation and decreases into the low-frequency regime for increasing electron-electron correlation. This infers that as the Mott insulator limit of high electron-electron correlation is approached, the finite-size effect on the electron dynamics becomes negligible.

Propagation time and nondipole contributions to intraband high-harmonic generation

Applying the semiclassical model, we identify two connected effects in intraband high-harmonic generation (HHG): (1) propagation time from the point of emission at the source to the point of detection, (2) beyond-electric-dipole corrections to the light-matter interaction. These effects inherit information regarding the dispersion and cause specific features in the spectra including even-ordered harmonics in systems with space- and time-inversion symmetry. They can for certain experimental geometries be measured free of the dipole background.

Edge-state and bulk-like laser-induced correlation effects in high-harmonic generation from a linear chain

We explore the significance of laser-induced correlation effects for high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in a linear chain model of a generic band gap material for both single-IR-pulse and VUV-pump--IR-probe HHG schemes. We examine various pump-pulse excitations, and catagorize signatures of laser-induced correlation effects into two classes related to edge-state and bulk-like effects. The relative importance of the edge-state effects decrease with increasing system-size, while the bulk-like effects remain. We identify regimes where these effects may alter the harmonic yield by an order of magnitude, but also regions where they may be neglected. We characterize the underlying laser-induced dynamics of the correlational mechanisms, using both an electronic population-description in a static field-free basis, and comparing to a bandstructure-picture with laser-induced time-dependent energy shifts. From this we provide a guideline on when to account for laser-induced electron correlations and give an estimate of the time-scale in which the laser-induced electron-electron interactions can cause correlational changes in the harmonic spectra. We find this timescale to be a few tens of femtoseconds.

Edge-state-induced correlation effects in two-color high-harmonic generation

We show that two-color high-harmonic spectroscopy can reveal finite-size and edge-state-induced dynamic electron correlation effects in a generic nanostructured band-gap material. Compared to the response of a bulk sample, we demonstrate a significant correlation-induced increase in the efficiency of the generated signal over a wide range of frequencies by harnessing the power of these ultrafast many-electron dynamics.
