Exponential convergence to equilibrium for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations

A class of linear kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with a non-trivial diffusion matrix and with periodic boundary conditions in the spatial variable is considered. After formulating the problem in a geometric setting, the question of the rate of convergence to equilibrium is studied within the formalism of differential calculus on Riemannian manifolds. Under explicit geometric assumptions on the velocity field, the energy function and the diffusion matrix, it is shown that global regular solutions converge in time to equilibrium with exponential rate. The result is proved by estimating the time derivative of a modified entropy functional, as recently proposed by Villani. For spatially homogeneous solutions the assumptions of the main theorem reduce to the curvature bound condition for the validity of logarithmic Sobolev inequalities discovered by Bakry and Emery. The result applies to the relativistic Fokker-Planck equation in the low temperature regime, for which exponential trend to equilibrium was previously unknown.

Cosmological models with fluid matter undergoing velocity diffusion

A new type of fluid matter model in general relativity is introduced, in which the fluid particles are subject to velocity diffusion without friction. In order to compensate for the energy gained by the fluid particles due to diffusion, a cosmological scalar field term is added to the left hand side of the Einstein equations. This hypothesis promotes diffusion to a new mechanism for accelerated expansion in cosmology. It is shown that diffusion alters not only quantitatively, but also qualitatively the global dynamical properties of the standard cosmological models.

A kinetic theory of diffusion in general relativity with cosmological scalar field

A new model to describe the dynamics of particles undergoing diffusion in general relativity is proposed. The evolution of the particle system is described by a Fokker-Planck equation without friction on the tangent bundle of spacetime. It is shown that the energy-momentum tensor for this matter model is not divergence-free, which makes it inconsistent to couple the Fokker-Planck equation to the Einstein equations. This problem can be solved by postulating the existence of additional matter fields in spacetime or by modifying the Einstein equations. The case of a cosmological scalar field term added to the left hand side of the Einstein equations is studied in some details. For the simplest cosmological model, namely the flat Robertson-Walker spacetime, it is shown that, depending on the initial value of the cosmological scalar field, which can be identified with the present observed value of the cosmological constant, either unlimited expansion or the formation of a singularity in finite time will occur in the future. Future collapse into a singularity also takes place for a suitable small but positive present value of the cosmological constant, in contrast to the standard diffusion-free scenario.

On a relativistic Fokker-Planck equation in kinetic theory

A relativistic kinetic Fokker-Planck equation that has been recently proposed in the physical literature is studied. It is shown that, in contrast to other existing relativistic models, the one considered in this paper is invariant under Lorentz transformations in the absence of friction. A similar property (invariance by Galilean transformations in the absence of friction) is verified in the non-relativistic case. In the first part of the paper some fundamental mathematical properties of the relativistic Fokker-Planck equation are established. In particular, it is proved that the model is compatible with the finite propagation speed of particles in relativity. In the second part of the paper, two non-linear relativistic mean-field models are introduced. One is obtained by coupling the relativistic Fokker-Planck equation to the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics, and is therefore of interest in plasma physics. The other mean-field model couples the Fokker-Planck dynamics to a relativistic scalar theory of gravity (the Nordström theory) and is therefore of interest in gravitational physics. In both cases the existence of steady states for all possible prescribed values of the mass is established. In the gravitational case this result is better than for the corresponding non-relativistic model, the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system, for which existence of steady states is known only for small mass.

Oscillations toward the singularity of LRS Bianchi type IX cosmological models with Vlasov matter

We analyze the dynamics of a class of cosmological solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov equations. These equations describe an ensemble of collisionless particles (which represent galaxies or clusters of galaxies) that interact gravitatively through Einstein's equations of general relativity. The cosmological models we consider are spatially homogeneous, of Bianchi type IX, and locally rotationally symmetric (LRS). We prove that generic solutions exhibit an oscillatory approach toward the singularities (the "big bang" in the past and the "big crunch" in the future); this is in contrast to the behavior of Einstein-vacuum or Einstein-Euler solutions. To establish this result we make use of dynamical systems theory; we introduce dimensionless dynamical variables that are defined on a compact state space; in this formulation the oscillatory behavior of generic solutions is represented by an approach to heteroclinic cycles.

Asymptotics of LRS Bianchi type I cosmological models with elastic matter

In this paper we report on results in the study of spatially homogeneous cosmological models with elastic matter. We show that the behavior of elastic solutions is fundamentally different from that of perfect fluid solutions already in the case of locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type I models; this is true even when the elastic material resembles a perfect fluid very closely. In particular, the approach to the initial singularity is characterized by an intricate oscillatory behavior of the scale factors, while the future asymptotic behavior is described by isotropization rates that differ significantly from those of perfect fluids.

Virial inequalities for steady states in relativistic galactic dynamics

It is well known that steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, a widely used model in non-relativistic galactic dynamics, have negative energy. In this paper we derive the analogous property for two relativistic generalizations of the Vlasov-Poisson system: The Nordström-Vlasov system and the Einstein-Vlasov system. In the first case we show that the energy of steady states is bounded by their total rest mass; in the second case, where we also assume spherical symmetry, we prove an inequality which involves not only the energy and the rest mass, but also the central redshift. In both cases the proof makes use of integral inequalities satisfied by time depedent solutions and which are derived using the vector fields multipliers method.

Bianchi Cosmologies with Anisotropic Matter: Locally Rotationally Symmetric Models

The dynamics of cosmological models with isotropic matter sources (perfect fluids) is extensively studied in the literature; in comparison, the dynamics of cosmological models with anisotropic matter sources is not. In this paper we consider spatially homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations with a large class of anisotropic matter models including collisionless matter (Vlasov), elastic matter, and magnetic fields. The dynamics of models of Bianchi types I, II, and IX are completely described; the two most striking results are the following: (i) There exist matter models, compatible with the standard energy conditions, such that solutions of Bianchi type IX (closed cosmologies) need not necessarily recollapse; there is an open set of forever expanding solutions. (ii) Generic type IX solutions associated with a matter model like Vlasov matter exhibit oscillatory behavior toward the initial singularity. This behavior differs significantly from that of vacuum/perfect fluid cosmologies; hence "matter matters". Finally, we indicate that our methods can probably be extended to treat a number of open problems, in particular, the dynamics of Bianchi type VIII and Kantowski-Sachs solutions.

Dispersive behavior in Galactic Dynamics

The purpose of this paper is to study the relations between different concepts of dispersive solution for the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. Moreover we give necessary conditions for the existence of partially and totally dispersive solutions and a sufficient condition for the occurence of statistical dispersion. These conditions take the form of inequalities involving the energy, the mass and the momentum of the solution. Examples of dispersive and non-dispersive solutions--steady states, periodic solutions and virialized solutions--are also considered.

Dynamics of Bianchi type I solutions of the Einstein equations with anisotropic matter

We analyze the global dynamics of Bianchi type I solutions of the Einstein equations with anisotropic matter. The matter model is not specified explicitly but only through a set of mild and physically motivated assumptions; thereby our analysis covers matter models as different from each other as, e.g., collisionless matter, elastic matter and magnetic fields. The main result we prove is the existence of an `anisotropy classification' for the asymptotic behaviour of Bianchi type I cosmologies. The type of asymptotic behaviour of generic solutions is determined by one single parameter that describes certain properties of the anisotropic matter model under extreme conditions. The anisotropy classification comprises the following types. The convergent type \Aplus: Each solution converges to a Kasner solution as the singularity is approached and each Kasner solution is a possible past asymptotic state. The convergent types \Bplus and \Cplus: Each solution converges to a Kasner solution as the singularity is approached; however, the set of Kasner solutions that are possible past asymptotic states is restricted. The oscillatory type \Dplus: Each solution oscillates between different Kasner solutions as the singularity is approached. Furthermore, we investigate non-generic asymptotic behaviour and the future asymptotic behaviour of solutions.

Asymptotic behavior and orbital stability of galactic dynamics in relativistic scalar gravity

The Nordström-Vlasov system is a relativistic Lorentz invariant generalization of the Vlasov-Poisson system in the gravitational case. The asymptotic behavior of solutions and the non-linear stability of steady states are investigated. It is shown that solutions of the Nordström-Vlasov system with energy grater or equal to the mass satisfy a dispersion estimate in terms of the conformal energy. When the energy is smaller than the mass, we prove existence and non-linear (orbital) stability of a class of static solutions (isotropic polytropes) against general perturbations. The proof of orbital stability is based on a variational problem associated to the minimization of the energy functional under suitable constraints.

Dynamics of Bianchi type I elastic spacetimes

We study the global dynamical behavior of spatially homogeneous solutions of the Einstein equations in Bianchi type I symmetry, where we use non-tilted elastic matter as an anisotropic matter model that naturally generalizes perfect fluids. Based on our dynamical systems formulation of the equations we are able to prove that (i) toward the future all solutions isotropize; (ii) toward the initial singularity all solutions display oscillatory behavior; solutions do not converge to Kasner solutions but oscillate between different Kasner states. This behavior is associated with energy condition violation as the singularity is approached.

A mathematical theory of isolated systems in relativistic plasma physics

The existence and the properties of isolated solutions to the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system with initial data on the backward hyperboloid $t=-\sqrt{1+|x|^2}$ are investigated. Isolated solutions of Vlasov-Maxwell can be defined by the condition that the particle density is compactly supported on the initial hyperboloid and by imposing the absence of incoming radiation on the electromagnetic field. Various consequences of the mass-energy conservation laws are derived by assuming the existence of smooth isolated solutions which match the inital data. In particular, it is shown that the mass-energy of isolated solutions on the backward hyperboloids and on the surfaces of constant proper time are preserved and equal, while the mass-energy on the forward hyperboloids is non-increasing and uniformly bounded by the mass-energy on the initial hyperboloid. Moreover the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions in the future of the initial surface is established for the one dimensional version of the system.

Global classical solutions to the 3D Nordström-Vlasov system

The Nordström-Vlasov system describes the evolution of self-gravitating collisionless matter in the framework of a relativistic scalar theory of gravitation. We prove global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the corresponding initial value problem in three dimensions when the initial data for the scalar field are smooth and the initial particle density is smooth with compact support.

On a characteristic initial value problem in Plasma physics

The relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system of plasma physics is considered with initial data on a past light cone. This characteristic initial value problem arises in a natural way as a mathematical framework to study the existence of solutions isolated from incoming radiation. Various consequences of the mass-energy conservation and of the absence of incoming radiation condition are first derived assuming the existence of global smooth solutions. In the spherically symmetric case, the existence of a unique classical solution in the future of the initial cone follows by arguments similar to the case of initial data at time $t=0$. The total mass-energy of spherically symmetric solutions equals the (properly defined) mass-energy on backward and forward light cones.

The Newtonian limit of the relativistic Boltzmann equation

The relativistic Boltzmann equation for a constant differential cross section and with periodic boundary conditions is considered. The speed of light appears as a parameter $c>c_0$ for a properly large and positive $c_0$. A local existence and uniqueness theorem is proved in an interval of time independent of $c>c_0$ and conditions are given such that in the limit $c\to +\infty$ the solutions converge, in a suitable norm, to the solutions of the non-relativistic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres.
